De-escalation
Ayane located Hayate and approached him with a grave countenance, immediately capturing the attention of the Mugen Tenshin leader. He sensed that this pertained to an unusual adversary.
"Hayate, we're facing a grave issue. Grim Eagle has essentially declared war against you and the entire Mugen Tenshin clan." she reported.
Hayate responded in disbelief, "Why? What triggered this?"
Ayane sighed, recounting the sequence of events, "It all began when some of our ninjas kidnapped a close friend of his, a woman named Dunnan, attempting to use her as bait. Grim Eagle and I managed to rescue her, but he's incensed over the incident."
Hayate acknowledged the severity of the situation, "I understand. Grim Eagle is indeed formidable, and there's the unsettling possibility that he might be a fiend as well, given his dark flames and aura."
Ryu, the Dragon ninja, chimed in, "Indeed, he's no ordinary adversary. We need to approach this cautiously."
Hayate concurred, "Agreed. We should initiate a dialogue with Grim Eagle to seek a peaceful resolution, while also ensuring our defenses are prepared for any contingency."
Ryu added, "A prudent approach, Hayate."
…
Grim had insisted on Dunnan staying in his hotel room after the recent altercation with the Mugen Tenshin, an incident that had not only infuriated him but also left him deeply concerned for her safety. Dunnan, however, was growing uneasy with Grim's overprotective nature, and Samara wasn't about to let him off the hook.
"Grim, I truly appreciate your concern, but you don't have to be so overprotective. I'm more than capable of taking care of myself." Dunnan expressed with genuine concern.
Grim, visibly frustrated, replied, "Dunnan, you don't understand. Those Mugen Tenshin ninjas are dangerous, reckless individuals. I can't risk anything happening to you."
Sighing, Dunnan responded, "I know you're worried, but I can't stay cooped up in this hotel room forever. I need to live my life too."
Samara couldn't resist teasing, "You're turning into a worrywart, Grim. You've got to give her some space."
Frustrated and not in the mood for jokes, Grim retorted, "This is no time for jokes, Samara. I just can't shake the feeling that something terrible is going to happen."
"Grim, I promise I'll be cautious. But I can't live in fear, and neither should you," Dunnan gently reassured him.
Reluctantly, Grim Eagle agreed, "Alright, Dunnan. I'll try to ease up a bit and not be so overbearing. But I still can't shake the feeling that I need to do something about those Mugen Tenshin ninjas."
"Thank you, Grim. I know it's not easy for you, but it means a lot to me," Dunnan expressed her gratitude.
A knock interrupted their conversation, prompting Grim to discreetly reach for his Glock 17, motioning for Dunnan to stay out of sight. He cautiously checked through the peephole and recognized Ron. After letting Ron in, Grim inquired, "Are reinforcements with you?"
"Yes, my squad is here, and we're in the adjacent room. Another UNWOP squad is posted nearby, blending in and ready to act as needed," Ron confirmed.
"Good. Please watch over Dunnan. I'm going hunting." Grim declared before concealing his weapon and departing.
…
Walking down the street Grim was irritated and barely hiding it. Hitomi noticed Grim's irritation and decided to try and lift his spirits. Approaching him with a warm smile, she asked, "Hey, Grim, what's bothering you so much?"
Grim, clearly annoyed, glanced at her and replied, "Hitomi, I'm really not in the mood right now."
Undaunted, Hitomi continued, trying to inject some cheer into the situation, "Come on, Grim! You know what they say, a smile can make even the darkest days a bit brighter."
Grim Eagle sighed deeply and retorted, "Hitomi, this isn't the time for cheesy quotes or optimism."
Hitomi's enthusiasm waned, and she pouted slightly at his response. "Alright, fine. But you can't stay like this forever, you know? Whatever happened, I'm here for you."
"I appreciate that, Hitomi, but right now, I just need some time to deal with this on my own." Grim Eagle reluctantly admitted.
Hitomi nodded in understanding. "Alright, Grim. I won't push you. But remember, when you're ready to talk or if you change your mind, I'll be here."
As Grim walked away, still visibly affected by recent events, Hitomi watched him go, concerned but respecting his need for space.
…
Soon after, Grim Eagle came across a gathering of Mugen Tenshin ninjas, their whispered conversations catching his attention. Stealthily, he closed the distance, listening in on their heated discussion, which revolved around him and his recent confrontations with their comrades. Without hesitation, Grim sprang into action, his movements as swift and precise as a shadow, swiftly eliminating each opponent to ensure no trace of their bodies remained.
In the aftermath of the skirmish, Grim stood with an empty expression on his face. His voice, laced with unwavering determination, pierced the silence as he uttered, "On sight."
With those words, he departed the scene, leaving behind nothing but scattered ashes that the wind carried away, resuming his relentless pursuit.
Unbeknownst to Grim, someone had witnessed his onslaught and was far from pleased.
Later, Hayate received reports of the Mugen Tenshin ninjas being systematically eliminated, growing increasingly anxious about Grim Eagle's vow to attack them "on sight." He fully comprehended the seriousness of the situation and hoped that Ryu Hayabusa could locate Grim Eagle and mediate a peaceful resolution before the situation spiraled into an all-out conflict.
…
Kasumi found herself in a complex situation. While it could benefit her, she was unwilling to let Grim continue his relentless attacks on her clan, fearing that he might eventually target her brother due to the incident involving Dunnan Vela. Determined to protect her brother and the clan from Grim's vengeance, she confronted Grim Eagle who was on top of a roof stalking another group of Mugen Tenshin ninjas.
"Grim Eagle, we need to talk." She asserted.
Grim Eagle, clearly in a foul mood, grimaced at the kunoichi. "Not now, Kasumi. I'm not in the mood."
Unfazed, Kasumi pressed on, "I don't care if you're in the mood or not. I've heard about what happened with the Mugen Tenshin ninjas and your friend Dunnan Vela. You can't just go around attacking them like that."
Glaring back, Grim responded, "They kidnapped Dunnan. What was I supposed to do? Let her die?!"
Kasumi remained resolute, "I understand your anger, but you need to realize that there are better ways to resolve this. Attacking the Mugen Tenshin won't bring a peaceful solution."
"Peaceful?! After what they did?" Grim Eagle's frustration grew.
Kasumi's voice softened as she said, "Look, I care about my brother and my clan. I won't let you bring harm to them. But I also don't want more violence. Let's find a way to settle this without bloodshed."
"Even though that same brother and clan want you dead?" Grim countered.
Kasumi affirmed, "Even if they want me dead. But I do know that revenge won't heal it. Try talking to Hayate instead, find a way to make amends or at least avoid further conflict."
This suggestion did not sit well with Grim. "Are you serious?! You want me to talk?! With the same man who couldn't keep his ninjas in line?! Screw that! Mugen Tenshin messed around, and now they're finding out!"
Kasumi sighed, disappointed with his response. "Then I'll have to stop you right now before things get worse." She assumed her combat stance, which made Grim raise an eyebrow as he took his own southpaw combat stance.
"Oh? You want to stop me even when the situation benefits you? Then be my guest."
Grim moved in aggressively, closing the distance on Kasumi. She attempted to keep him at bay with side kicks, but Grim continued his advance. Kasumi executed a step-in knee that narrowly missed Grim's chin, while Grim's hooks narrowly failed to connect on her. He feinted a straight punch and then swiftly followed up with a leg kick to Kasumi's lead leg. Despite the pain, she concealed it well. Grim effortlessly avoided Kasumi's high kicks.
Kasumi managed to land a body kick, but Grim still found a way inside, launching a 1-2 combo that sent her stumbling backwards. He seized the opportunity and pressed his advantage. Kasumi, attempting a kick, slipped due to Grim's quick back dash before he rushed back in allowing him to gain the upper hand as Kasumi regained her stance. He delivered a punishing switch kick to her body, prompting Kasumi to mount a swift blitz. Grim pivoted out of harm's way, causing Kasumi's attacks to miss.
Kasumi tried to outmaneuver Grim with lateral movement and even incorporated teleports, but Grim countered with a mix of dashes and his own dark-flamed teleport. He took her by surprise with a blazing overhead kick that sent her sprawling to the ground, although she quickly sprang back to her feet. Grim wasted no time and closed the gap, attempting to grapple with her, but Kasumi managed to slip out.
Desperate to create some distance, Kasumi found herself relentlessly pursued by Grim. He cornered her and began a ferocious assault, delivering hooks to her body, uppercuts and straight punches through her guard. Grim then landed a lead leg kick and launched a powerful haymaker, but Kasumi teleported behind him just in time to witness the blow demolish the wall where she had been cornered moments before. She stepped back, a fearful expression on her face.
Grim advanced, a sinister smirk playing on his lips as he sensed Kasumi's fear. He executed a feint, suggesting a low kick, which Kasumi rashly lunged toward to counter, falling into Grim's trap, and was met with two punishing hooks to her body. She countered with a flurry of punches, but Grim deftly leaned away and retaliated with a pull counter to her head, followed by a lead hook to the body and a powerful leg kick.
In response, Kasumi fired off a high kick, but Grim swiftly caught her leg and followed it up with a knee to her body, then throwing her to the ground. She, however, displayed remarkable resilience, immediately regaining her footing. Grim closed in, launching a one-two combination that was barely blocked. He followed with a body straight, a lead hook, and a straight punch to the head, all of which connected. Next a fiery flurry of punches and kicks shattered her defense, and a finishing cross sent her crashing to the ground.
Grim pounced on her, relentlessly assaulting her with elbows and punches. Kasumi attempted to free herself, but Grim showed no mercy, gaining back control and delivering a knee that struck her liver, causing her intense agony as she curled up and shielded her head. Grim's ferocity continued as he secured full mount, continuing to pound away at the defenseless kunoichi.
Through the excruciating pain, Kasumi's thoughts revealed her regret: 'Not good! Not good!. I can't let it end here.'
"Next time, stay the hell out of my way!" Grim shouted as he prepared to deliver the finishing blow. However, a black blur suddenly appeared, knocking him away. Grim rolled and sprang to his feet, finding Ryu Hayabusa standing protectively between Kasumi and himself.
"That's enough," Ryu calmly declared.
Grim, his anger still palpable, directed his frustration at Ryu Hayabusa, demanding, "Ryu Hayabusa. Trying to get in my way, just like she did?"
Ryu, maintaining his calm and persuasive tone, responded, "Grim, I understand your anger and frustration, but resorting to violence will only exacerbate the situation. We must prevent further escalation."
Grim retorted with irritation, "We wouldn't be in this situation if Hayate had better control over his own subordinates!"
Ryu countered, "Even if that's the case, do you believe your current rampage will truly resolve matters? Will it make the situation better?"
Grim Eagle, still visibly angry, challenged, "Well, if you have a better solution, speak up now, or this conversation ends."
Ryu continued, resolute, "Indeed, I do have one: Let's settle this dispute through a match, either within the Dead or Alive tournament or outside of it if necessary. This way, there's a chance for resolution without unnecessary bloodshed."
Grim inquired, "Would Hayate agree to this?"
"I'll ensure he agrees, but I trust he'll favor this option over further escalation," Ryu responded with confidence.
After a moment of contemplation, Grim nodded in agreement, saying, "Fine, Ryu, but only because I respect you enough. However, I want to speak with Hayate and hear his agreement to your proposal."
Ryu suggested a neutral meeting place, "We can arrange a meeting at the shopping center."
Grim concurred, "The shopping center it is. But be aware, if anyone tries anything underhanded, I won't hesitate to take drastic action."
Ryu reassured him, "I guarantee that nothing underhanded will happen. You have my word."
"Alright, we'll meet in two hours," Grim announced before turning his gaze to Kasumi, adding, "Lucky you, you got what you wanted." With that, he vanished in a flame torrent.
"Kasumi, it's best that you leave and recover. You nearly pushed things to the brink," Ryu advised, not turning to look at her.
Kasumi offered her defense, saying, "I know, but I didn't want Hayate to be harmed."
Ryu acknowledged her intentions, replying, "I understand, but we'll manage the situation from here. So, for now, keep a low profile." With that, he teleported away, and Kasumi followed suit.
…
At the neutral ground of the shopping center, Grim, Hayate, Ryu, and Ayane gathered, all dressed in civilian clothing. Despite the truce, Grim remained cautious, ever mindful of the ninja nature of the Mugen Tenshin. He kept his guard up, even in the presence of Ryu, whom he respected deeply.
"Grim, thank you for coming here. We need to find a way to resolve this peacefully," Hayate began.
"Let's get this over with, Hayate," Grim replied, his guard still firmly in place.
Ayane chimed in sincerely, "Grim, we can't change what happened, but we can choose how to move forward."
Grim Eagle went straight to the point, stating, "Hayate, this all started when your ninjas kidnapped my friend, Dunnan, and attacked another friend as well. Then those same ninjas tried to use Dunnan as bait to get to me, so I retaliated appropriately."
Hayate calmly explained, "Grim, we didn't intend for Dunnan to get involved. In fact, it shouldn't have happened at all. But we can't overlook the fact that you attacked our clan members."
"Also, Grim, you also attacked our ninjas who were on a mission to deal with a runaway clan member, whom you know is Kasumi," Ayane added.
Grim defended himself vehemently, "Excuse me?! They started that by throwing a kunai at my head for no reason! Then after I dodged that and asked about who and why the hell they did so, they tried to take my head off! I just defended myself! I had no intention of interfering with their mission to begin with."
Hayate and Ayane exchanged incredulous glances, unable to believe the sequence of events that had led to their current situation. Ryu, however, found it all rather ridiculous. Despite the absurdity, they were relieved that they were able to at least have a conversation.
"Anyways, Hayate, Ryu mentioned how we can resolve this," Grim continued.
Hayate acknowledged, "Yes, he did, and I'm more than open to settling this either in the DOA tournament or outside of it, with Ryu and Ayane as witnesses. We fight there, winner takes all, and we put an end to this bad blood once and for all."
"Fair enough." Grim agreed, "But let me make one thing clear, Hayate. If any of your subordinates try to mess with me before or after the match, I won't hold back. They'll get what they deserve."
Hayate accepted, saying, "I understand, Grim. We'll do our best to ensure there are no further incidents."
Grim sighed, briefly relaxing his stance. "Good to hear. We'll find out soon enough when we'll settle this. Catch you later," he said, before teleporting away with his signature flaming shunshin.
Hayate turned to Ayane and issued clear instructions, his tone stern. "Inform the others that they are not to engage with Grim Eagle unless it's a matter of self-defence. Anyone who foolishly provokes him is entirely responsible for their own actions. If, by some chance, they manage to survive him, I will personally take care of them for their stupidity."
…
Grim stood with an unexpected sense of anticipation, a departure from his usual nonchalant attitude towards match-ups. The shift in behavior hinted at an event that had piqued his interest. Disregarding the deafening noise of the arena, he patiently awaited the announcer's next proclamation as the anticipation in the air grew. The screen above them flickered to life, unveiling the identity of his upcoming opponent: Grim Eagle vs. Hitomi.
Hayate, despite his efforts to conceal it, couldn't hide his concern for Hitomi at the revelation of the match-up. However, he recognized that this offered him an extended opportunity to study Grim's fighting style and brace for the impending battle.
Lei Fang, haunted by her own defeat at Grim's hands, harbored deep concern for her friend's well-being. The ruthlessness, power, and precision of Grim's offense were qualities she feared, and she worried about how Hitomi would contend against such a formidable fighting style.
Tina, having witnessed Grim's overwhelming power in clashes with her father Bass Armstrong and personally experienced his formidable grappling skills, was apprehensive about potential excessive force or collateral damage during the match. Aware of Grim's destructive capability, she feared unintended consequences in a face-off against someone like Hitomi.
Hitomi, on the other hand, felt a mix of excitement and anxiety about the impending match. A skilled and competitive fighter, she viewed it as a thrilling opportunity to test her abilities against Grim's formidable prowess, relishing the challenge and aiming to showcase her skills in the tournament. The emotional layer added by her growing feelings for Grim heightened her anxiety, grappling with the desire to win and the fear of potentially straining their relationship.
For Grim, the match presented an intriguing challenge. Recognizing Hitomi as a skilled martial artist who had earned her place in the tournament, he looked forward to testing his abilities against someone of her caliber. Yet, the recent developments with other women expressing interest in him added a new dimension to the match, injecting an unpredictable element that further fueled his curiosity about how the confrontation with Hitomi would unfold.
