A/N: I wouldn't normally put an author's note here but I will anyway because this is super important ( or just kind of important ), in the original baseball scene the song supermassive black hole plays, and since this is fanfiction and I can't put music here I just want everyone to know while I wrote the story ( to give it a little twist ) I envisioned the song, Personal Jesus by Depeche mode to be playing instead. Just so you guys can see my vision a little, and while the last chapter borrowed from the Alien movie this one borrows from the mini-series and doll line Novi Stars. Thank you for the love and all the wonderful messages and reviews. Also excuse the fact that, like Bella, I know basically nothing about baseball.
Chapter 2.
"So, Aliens like baseball?
A lot of things happened this month, I found out my boyfriend was an alien and that his father came from a whole other planet, I met said alien boyfriend's family, and I found out, after a lot of teasing that alien was in fact an okay thing to say and I also found out that telling Edward Cullen you didn't want to come to his magical family baseball game was impossible and something that could only be described as the ultimate form of betrayal
"Of course, it's the American pastime," Edward's mother Esme said with a wink
For a group that should seemingly not know anything about baseball or any human pastimes for that matter, they seemed to know what they were doing. While Esme and I had been talking, the others had been putting the different bases and the pitcher's plate out across what looked to be very long distances and prepping themselves to no doubt give me a show I'd soon forget.
"Do you like baseball, Bella? Esme said sweetly
"Um, honestly I don't really know much about it but from what I've seen on TV it seems… hectic" I admitted
"It is, and I guess our games are more exciting than normal baseball games, that's why I like to stay on the sidelines and referee, you'll see what I mean in a minute… and speak of the devil it looks like they are about ready to start"
On the other side of the field on the pitcher's plate stood Alice, Edward's sister dressed in a dark blue shirt, white vest, and a baseball cap that complemented her dark spiky hair perfectly, even though her outfit was probably way too fancy to be at a simple family sports game she didn't look out of place, she never did.
A loud crack was heard across the sky
"It's time," Alice said bending her leg back and winding up to throw
"Watch this it's gonna get fast," Esme said, softly elbowing me in the side.
And fast it was. Not a second had passed before Alice threw the ball back with all her might, the ball was fast but Rosalie was faster, hitting the ball with a deafening crack, causing it to move supersonically toward the woods. This was probably a personal best for Rosalie as along with a proud grin came an almost blinding luminescent glow that radiated from every non-clothed part of her body.
Unbothered, Edward and Emmett whipped their heads to watch the ball and Edward began lunging for it. The thrill of the whole game was sending shivers down my spine and almost making me jump up and down with excitement, a sport had never been this riveting before. While I was busy watching Edward I hadn't noticed that Rosalie was almost on fourth base now and she was bound to make a home run
"That's gotta be a home run, right?" I asked turning to Esme
"Hmm, I don't know, Edward's very fast"
And right on cue, my personal Jesus was there, finding the ball and throwing it for Esme to catch. It happened in a matter of seconds, the ball was flying at god-like speeds and Rosalie was merely a step away from doing a home run when out of nowhere Esme's suspicion had been answered.
Edward was faster.
"Out!" The matriarch suddenly yelled
And then without a trace, they disappeared
"It's just a game, babe" An invisible Emmett yelled from somewhere
"Play nice, kitten" a concealed Carlisle quipped sounding like perhaps he was close to me
Was this one of those Alien things? Just vanishing into thin air?
Then in the blink of an eye, they were back again, like they hadn't moved an inch.
"It's one of the perks of our kind, we can vanish at a moment's notice. It was originally a safety mechanism used to disguise us from predators but some of us kind of, abuse it" Esme said in an answer to my confused expression.
"Okay…"
Esme just laughed at my awkward response, putting an arm around me and turning her head back to the baseball game that apparently had been there the entire time.
This time Carlisle was the one stepping up to the plate and readying himself to swing, and just like last time Alice nodded toward the person with the bat and raised her graceful leg once again winding up and throwing the ball as far as she could. And just like Rosalie, he hit the ball and started sprinting
But unlike last time, Edward and Emmett weren't running. As Carlisle was trying to make a home run the two boys started levitating toward each other
"What are they doing? How are they doing that?"
The boys were now toe to toe ramming and clashing with each other to prevent the opposite from getting the ball
"Don't worry about that, hon. Look, Carlisle is about to get a home run"
And as Esme said, because the brothers were busy playing they didn't notice Carlisle sprinting with all his might eventually securing the second Cullen team a point.
"Sometimes I think he made us just to have enough people to play baseball with" Alice quipped from the pitcher's plate, earning a playful glare from the aforementioned baseball-crazy-patriarch.
Speaking of the second Cullen team, it was now Jasper's turn. He squinted his eyes and stood, completely focused on the ball his wife was about to throw. And not unlike the others he hit the ball on the first try
Could they even miss? I thought to myself. Well, they probably had a lot of practice.
"Woah!" I exclaimed
Dissimilar to the other hits though, this one had been lodged far out into the branches of the nearby trees.
"Don't worry dear, Emmett's got it" Esme assured me with a grin
Indeed he did, Jasper's rogue shot seemed to act as the bruin's' personal challenge because he flew up into the trees as fast as he could, much to his wife's amusement.
"Out!"
"Is it over?" I asked
"Yup, what did you think huh Bella? Wasn't I good?" Emmett questioned causing Edward to elbow him in the stomach
"You don't have to answer that idiot"
"You were good, you all were" I assured, blushing as I did.
Baseball playing Edward, good now I know what will plague all my waking hours for the next 40 years.
"Bella, come on"
"No, you promised that after the baseball game, you would tell me something about…your kind," I said deciding to tread lightly around the subject
"What do you want to know"
Yes! Bella 1 - Edward 0
"What's your purpose?"
He immediately nodded his head no. Too big, okay.
"Do you have any culture? Texts? Holy scriptures?"
"Bella…"
Too much again?
"Okay, what do your rulers do?
"I'll tell you all of this in due time. I can't put you in unnecessary danger. You're too precious"
"Fine. What can you tell me?" I pouted a little
He sighed in response
"My planet's name… It's Twilight"
"Twilight? Like the evening"
"No. Maybe a little bit like that but it got its name based on what you humans call twilight existence. Something dark, immoral, on the edge of human society. That's what we are. But some people, people of our kind in denial use another name"
I cupped his face gently
"They call it Stephanie, meaning crown, it symbolizes victory and achievement it is kind of a battle cry or slang I guess." He looked down while speaking as if he had just told me something he was deeply ashamed of
"Thank you for telling me, for deciding I was special enough" I whispered.
As the dark, twilight began falling over the woods he held me in his arms and I cherished every second of it because after every nightfall, every kiss goodnight
I was one step closer to figuring out Edward Cullen.
