Third chapter of the day.

When I started writing this, I wasn't planning on going this far... The story got a little serious all of sudden.

~~~Day of the Gu Jie Raid, close to a certain military base~~~
"The day has finally arrived." said Ayako in her disguise as 'Yoru'.
"Are you nervous, Nee-san?" said Fumiya, crossdressing as 'Yami'.
"Not really? Yami-chan, we got one of the easiest parts of the operation."
"I-I know that. But we are doing it without informing some of the others…"
"It can't be helped, can it? It's not like we can trust everyone after all."
"Man, you sure look cute, Yami-chan. I almost lost some confidence as a girl here."
"P-Please don't say that, Chiba-san!"
Ayako and Fumiya were both accompanied by a few subordinates from the Kuroba branch plus Erika. They were now a few dozen meters away from a military base that's been confirmed to be in cahoots with Gu Jie. Similar to the Zhou Gongjin case, some soldiers were foolishly baited into cooperating with the Surgery of Perpetual Youth. While Gu Jie was most likely not inside the base anymore, they still had to check and take these soldiers into custody or eliminate them.
The problem lies in the fact that only some of the parties involved in the raid were informed of the Kuroba's participation. The Juumonji, the Ichijou and the Saegusa to be more specific. The Chiba, aside from Erika, were unaware of the Kuroba. Kyouko even lied to Toshikazu, saying that only Tatsuya, among the Yotsuba, was participating. This was mostly done to avoid interference from the authorities of any kind, be it the police or the military. If any of them came to know about a raid on a military base, there was a chance that Saeki was going to use this as an excuse to interfere. By the way, Erika was also disguised, though she was just wearing a black wig and sunglasses.
"Is everything ready?"
"Yes, young master!" said subordinate number one.
"Idiot! It's young lady now!" said subordinate number two, elbowing number one.
"M-My deepest apologies, young lady!"
"S-Shut it, idiots!" screamed Fumiya, with tears in his eyes.
"This is kinda fun to watch." said Erika smirking.
"Are you all done now? We are about to start. And remember to address Erika-san as 'Kiri' for the duration of this operation." Ayako spoke with a flat tone.
"S-Sorry, Nee-san."
"My bad, my bad."
"*sigh* Anyway, prepare the jamming device. We have to handle this perfectly, without allowing anyone in the base to escape or call for help."
"Yes, young lady!"
"As soon as we received the signal, we move."
~~~Near an old warehouse~~~

"Are you sure you can do this, Masaki?" asked Shinkurou in a worried tone.

"Don't worry, Jouji. It's my duty as a member of the TMC. I can't sit around depressed while there are lives at risk." reassured Masaki.

Until yesterday night, Masaki was still a little depressed. Even so, Gouki never said anything to other clans about Masaki withdrawing from the operation. Gouki knew his son after all, Masaki would never fail his duty over a broken heart. In a way, a distraction was exactly what Masaki needed. Perhaps, if it turned into a fight, as coldblooded as it might sound, it would be a perfect stress reliever for him as well. Among Gouki's subordinates, no one thought Masaki was unprepared for this job. They all did their jobs and awaited the beginning of the operation.

"Besides, I got my strategist as well, don't I?"

"...Right, you trusted me with this role. So there's no way I will disappoint you, Masaki."

This operation should be handled by the TMC and the Chiba alone, but since Shinkurou was pretty much an Ichijou in anything but name, he was also included.

This warehouse was supposed to be abandoned but it was confirmed there were traditionalists working inside. As the traditionalists were working alongside Zhou Gongjin before, it was safe to assume they would also work with Gu Jie given the chance, if they weren't already.

"Don't let your guard down. They use Ancient Magic so we can assume they possess a lot of weird techniques alien to us."

"Yes, Masaki. But shouldn't we ask for their surrender first?"

"According to intel provided by the Yotsuba, ancient magic is full of techniques useful for detection and espionage. We should assume they are already aware of our presence and they know we have the warehouse surrounded and yet they are not coming out or making a move."

"So they are preparing an ambush…" Shinkuro deduced.

"If they surrender mid-fight, we can accept but otherwise..."

"Understood." Shinkuro nodded.

~~~In another traditionalist hideout~~~
"Listen, you two. Remember to focus and avoid overdoing it, okay?"
"We got it already, Onee-chan. You don't need to keep repeating it."
"We will do our best, Onee-sama."
The Saegusa had this hideout surrounded as well, they already announced their intentions over the megaphone but no response came from within the building. That in itself was an answer. Now, with Mayumi in the lead, they were preparing to raid the building. She was just finishing lecturing Kasumi and Izumi.
"Even if you say, you almost never listen to what I say, do you Kasumi-chan?" Mayumi raised an eyebrow.
"Co-Come on! I do listen! It's just that sometimes I get a little too worked up…" Kasumi protested.
"Do not worry, Onee-sama. I will take care of Kasumi-chan." Izumi assured.
"I-Izumi! You should back me up at times like this!" Kasumi once again protested.
"We will execute this job perfectly… and then I will ask Miyuki-oneesama to praise me!" Izumi suddenly exclaimed.
"...What am I going to do with you two?" Mayumi sighed.
They were the main force of the Saegusa Clan. Mayumi was the strongest magician in the clan as her father and her brothers weren't suited for battle. Even with Kasumi and Izumi working together, they couldn't beat Mayumi. When they enter the building, there's no guarantee that they won't split up so Mayumi had to make sure her sisters could handle themselves.
"Listen, this is an important job. Neither of you have participated in as many operations as I have but I didn't object to your participation this time because I believe you can do well. So please live up to mine and to our fellow countrymen's expectations."
""Yes!"" They both said in unison.
"Then, as soon as Kyouko-san gives the ok, let's show them what we got!"
~~~Yet another possible Gu Jie hideout~~~

"I-Is this really fine, Toushu-sama?!"

"There are no problems. And I'm not yet the Clan Head." Katsuto curtly said.

Each clan sent a portion of their forces but that was mostly to surround the locations and avoid letting any suspects escape. The key players were the ones in charge of actually raiding the locations and taking down the enemy. Tatsuya, Ayako and Fumiya for the Yotsuba; Masaki and Shinkuro for the Ichijou; Mayumi , Kasumi and Izumi for the Saegusa; Katsuto for the Juumonji; Erika, Toshikazu and Inagaki {I know Inagaki is not part of the clan, just highlighting his name} for the Chiba.

Though Katsuto's father, Kazuki, had already lost his abilities as magician and Katsuto was the Clan Head in all but name, Katsuto believed it was better to not get ahead of himself. Until Kazuki made the official announcement in the incoming Ten Master Clan Conference, Katsto would accept being called Clan Head.

"Do you not trust our clan's defenses?" Katsuto asked.

"N-Never! I was just worried." Katsuto's subordinates explained.

"The enemies are Ancient Magic users so they likely have abilities unknown to us." another subordinate added.

"It won't be an issue. I have some experience with Ancient Magic users myself." Katsuto recalled Mikihiko.

Katsuto planned on entering the hideout alone. It wasn't baseless confidence, with his Phalanx, there were hardly any enemies he couldn't beat in Japan. Surely the world was wide and the number of adversaries that could prove to be a challenge for him were many but those individuals were not here. Katsuto would fulfill his duty as a member of the TMC and crush the terrorists plot head on.

"It should be almost time to begin. I wish to conclude this business as soon as possible."

~~~Oumi Kazukiyo's mansion~~~
"So it's here." Toshikazu said, looking up at the mansion.
"Inspector, this is no time to daydream." Inagaki complained.
"Come on, Inagaki. I wasn't daydreaming, I was just thinking a bit." Toshikazu defended.
Toshikazu, Tatsuya and Inagaki were standing directly in front of the main entrance. So far, no moves were made. Tatsuya also couldn't probe inside the mansion with his Elemental Sight because there was a barrier surrounding it. He could force his way through and decompose it but that would probably stir the hornet's nest before the right time.
However, it's not like they were just idling around. Toshikazu had already knocked on the door, rang the doorbell and no one answered. Surprisingly, no attacks came. If they had, Tatsuya and co would have already rushed in. It was unknown if the enemy was hoping for them to leave or if they were preparing an ambush, based on Tatsuya's experience it was the latter.
But for now, they were just giving the enemy a chance to surrender, not like they believed it was going to happen. If it weren't for the police officers surrounding the mansion and the Inspector duo accompanying Tatsuya, he would have already infiltrated the mansion without caring about "invasion of property" and "property damage".
"Still, you are so young but you look very dependable, Shiba-kun." Inagaki commented.
"Thank you very much, Inspector Inagaki."
"Dependable? According to what I heard from Erika and Naotsugu, he could very well raid this place alone." Toshikazu said.
"..."
It was a common joke among Tatsuya's friends that he was omnipotent. Things like "if it's Tatsuya he can do it" or "if nobody knows about this, Tatsuya definitely does". And in Naotsugu's case, he mentioned how skilled Tatsuya was when fended off a few of the USNA forces before {refer to Visitor Arc, as I mentioned previously, Naotsugu was removed from the second season of the anime but he was supposed to appear and help Tatsuya fight off some USNA soldiers.}.
(Am I some kind of monster? What exactly did Erika say about me?)
Tatsuya decided to keep silent but Toshikazu noticed that Tatsuya never denied his claim.
"Ok, so reviewing one last time, if we encounter any 'puppets' along the way, we should attack without mercy." Toshikazu reviewed.
"Yes, from my understanding, the ones controlled by Gu Jie are already dead and cannot be saved. If you let pity slow your judgment, it may result in your death." Tatsuya explained.
Though Gu Jie's magic can control corpses, it wasn't something as simple as reanimating a body to make it stand again. These "corpses" still had life force in them which was used as fuel, allowing the corpses to wield magic even in their undead state.
"I guess so. But man, does it leave a bad taste in my mouth." Toshikazu lamented.
"You can think of it as mercy to the victims."
"Ahaha… Shiba-kun, what exactly did you go through to be able to think like this? And so young as well." Toshikazu looked at Tatsuya curiously.
"Inspector Chiba is also young." Tatsuya lightly evaded the question.
"Thanks. You don't need to answer if you don't want to." said Toshikazu, understanding Tatsuya.
"Sorry."
"Don't mind it. Oh, and after we are done with this, you can call me Toshikazu or Aniue like Erika does."
"Hm?"
"Like it or not, you are going to be my brother-in-law, after all. And I'm thankful to you as well."
"I don't recall doing anything to earn your thanks…"
"Erika, you see, that girl is good at making friends but she is also good at losing them. She used to make friends and then neglect them right after. But then she met you and she hasn't neglected a single friendship ever since. That girl changed after she got to know you."
"... I haven't done anything though."
"Come on, just accept my thanks, will ya?" Toshikazu scratched the back of his head.
"...If you say that much, I won't refuse." Tatsuya let out a small smile.
Toshikazu conveyed his thoughts but there was one other thing he wanted to thank Tatsuya for. He wished to become more used to women so that next time he met a good woman, he wouldn't be so passive. Tatsuya helped him realize that he needed to change too.
"My god, Inspector Chiba has never acted so grown up." Inagaki gaped.
"That was unnecessary of you, Inagaki. Way to ruin the moment."
"Oh, it seems everyone else is ready." Tatsuya received the notification on his device.
~~~Inside Kyouko's car~~~

"All right, seems like everyone is in position." Kyouko said to no one in particular.

Her car was parked in a secured parking lot with no other people around. Though Kyouko wasn't really alone, Pixie was sitting beside her. Kyouko had previously taught some of her hacking techniques to Pixie on Tatsuya's request. Now, Pixi was here as back up in case anything happened.

"Master sighted." Pixie suddenly said.

She was referring to the screen that showed Tatsuya together with Toshikazu and Inagaki. Likely, Pixie just felt like pointing out Tatsuya's appearance just because. Like many before her, Kyouko also felt a little weirded out by Pixie. Kyouko knew about Pixie's ego but had a hard time drawing the line between Pixie's robotic and human behavior. Of course, she also wasn't expecting to be suddenly called out.

"Fujibayashi-sama."

"Eh? Ah, yes?"

"Please teach me more techniques after the mission is over."

"Huh?" Kyouko's head blanked out for a moment.

"I wish to be more useful to my Master so an upgrade is required."

"I-I see. I will think about it later. For now, we have to focus on the task at hand."

"Acknowledged."

(If I'm not mistaken, her ego, rather, her feelings were based on Honoka-san's. It's no wonder she's so devoted and submissive to Tatsuya-kun. If I recall correctly, the Yotsuba were doing a few experiments on the parasite they captured before {refer to Visitor Arc}... Surely there's no danger of any more Pixies appearing, right?)

Kyouko dismissed her own thoughts. Having a loyal servant was good but having one so devoted and so… in love could be quite burdening. But it's not like the Yotsuba were trying to create an army of robotic parasite maids for Tatsuya so Kyouko could rest assured. She shook her head left and right to get rid of these stupid thoughts and proceded to open the channel to speak to everybody.

"It seems everybody is ready. We will now begin the mission!" Kyouko announced to all units.

~~~At the same time, in a small coffee shop~~~
"Haah…" Lina sighed for the nth time.
"Lina, I know how you feel but…" Honoka tried to console her.
"You are still better at combat than us." said Shizuku in a monotone.
"That's right! We can't even fight properly, so you are still better than us." Honoka piggybacked on Shizuku's argument.
"I know but… I still feel a little bitter. My country is partially responsible for this mess and all I can do is just sit around…"
Due to Edward Clark's suspicious behavior, it was decided that Lina should remain on standby this time. Sylvie also said that Edward was not the only worry, there were members of the STARS that presented trouble. Most were jealous of Lina, she had looks, youth and was the number one magician of the USNA. There were many that disliked her because their pride couldn't put up with her. Lina never paid them much attention but after seeing how Edward was conspiring against an allied country, she felt that maybe those small sparks of jealousy could turn into something actually bad.
"I just hope everything goes well." said Shizuku.
"It will be fine Shizuku! They have Tatsuya-san, Mayumi-san, Juumonji-senpai and Ichijou-san. There's no way they can lose!"
"That's right, Honoka." a new voice joined in.
"Oh? Miyuki and Minami, you've finally arrived."
"Pardon my tardiness Lina."
"My deepest apologies for making you wait, Lina-sama."
"Ah, I wasn't really complaining…"
"Fufu, I know."
Miyuki and Minami sat on their seats reserved for them. They had just received a message from Kyouko. The operation had just started.
"But aren't you frustrated too, Miyuki? About not helping Tatsuya I mean."
"So that was why Lina. Rather than settling your country's problems, you just wanted to help Tatsuya-sama."
"W-What?! I never said that!" Lina got hit by a surprise attack.
"I understand. In truth you wished to fight side by side with Tatsuya-sama."
"Yes, that's ri-! Wait, that's not it either!" Lina corrected herself quickly but not quickly enough.
"Lina, your reactions…" Honoka started.
"...are pretty amusing to watch." Shizuku finished.
"Geez, stop bullying me!" Lina shouted while holding her head in her hands.
Honoka felt a little avenged since she was the one who suffered during the "pixie confession incident". Not like it was Lina's fault though.
"But for real, Lina. Let's have faith in them." Miyuki said, looking out the window.
~~~Kuroba (and Erika) side~~~

"Oh, this is pretty handy." Erika said.

"Are you surprised? This is my Mock Teleportation." Ayako declared.

"Seems like no one noticed us." Fumiya looked around.

Ayako had just used her Mock Teleportation to transport the three of them inside the base. The room was empty and they were now going to attack while the enemy's guard was down. They saw four soldiers walking down the hallway, Fumiya went after two and Erika went after the other two.

"What the–"

"Huh?!"

In an instant, two were downed by Fumiya's Direct Pain while the remaining two were hit in the back of their necks by Erika's sword. Since they had some leeway at the moment, Erika avoided using lethal force and hit them with her sword still sheathed.

"And that's four down. Let's keep this up."

"Should we split up and save some time?" Fumiya suggested.

"It could work. It's not like this base has any noteworthy soldiers." Ayako agreed.

"Then it's decided. Oh, could you send me to another floor then, Yoru?" Erika asked.

"It's not like I can't but it's probably safer for you to go on foot…" Ayako said while looking downwards.

"There are soldiers in every room and the hallway seems like it will get you noticed right away too. Worst case, they will surround you and shoot from every direction simultaneously." Ayako continued.

"Ehh… That sounds like a pain to deal with." Erika stuck her tongue out.

"Mock Teleportation does sound very practical but it's surprisingly better to retreat than to attack." Ayako explained.

"I guess it's the stairs for me then." Erika sighed.

"Good luck, Kiri-san." Fumiya and Ayako departed to the upper floor.

As they split, Erika was hit with a bad feeling. Somehow, it was going too smoothly. It didn't feel like the enemy had discovered them but Erika couldn't shake that feeling that something bad was coming. She hoped it was just a feeling but decided to double her precautions.

~~~Ichijou side~~~
"Attacking right off the bat, huh?" Masaki lightly commented.
As soon as the door opened, an onslaught of projectiles flew towards Masaki. His Interference Armor protected him but he was still a little surprised at how the other side didn't spare a single word and went straight for the offensive. He then calmly raised his gun-shaped CAD and pressed the trigger.
"Guah!"
One of the traditionalists exploded, his blood splashing everywhere, even on his allies. He was an unfortunate victim of Masaki's Rupture. Rupture also had an unintended effect of lowering enemy morale. Most couldn't quite keep their cool seeing one of their own exploding and turning into a pool of blood. Shinkuro used their momentary distraction to rush in and activate his Invisible Bullet on another traditionalist forehead, taking him out.
"D-Don't falter! Keep attacking!" one of them screamed.
"You should have just surrendered." Masaki said without a hint of pity.
Their bullets and magic couldn't get through Masaki's defense. At this point, the ones that attacked him did so out of sheer despair. Their attacks were useless and Masaki could kill them in a single attack. Still, a few more collected ones decided to change targets and tried their luck at Shinkuro. Of course, Masaki wasn't just about to let that happen to his strategist, he showered them with Air Bullets the moment they took their eyes off him. Shinkuro as well, he used movement type magic to dodge incoming attacks and countered with his Invisible Bullet.
At this rate, the battle (massacre) was going to end in less than ten minutes.
~~~Saegusa side~~~

"Wait just a moment, you two." Mayumi instructed.

They had just entered the building but couldn't see anyone. They went through a door and reached a hallway that split at the end, leading to right and left. Just as they were about to reach that intersection, Mayumi halted and focused her eyes. She was activating her Multi-Scope, which allowed her to see through walls and observe from different angles.

"There are enemies armed with guns on the left and magicians on the right. I will take care of the ones on the left. Kasumi-chan and Izumi-chan, you take care of the right."

""Yes!"" the twin assented.

The next moment, Mayumi activated her Dry Meteor, releasing small blocks of dry ice towards the armed enemies. They were seemingly all taken out but Mayumi was through and vaporized her projectiles soon after, making it rush into the enemies lungs. Even if they endured the first hit, the vaporized dry ice was going to render them unconscious now.

Kasumi and Izumi used Suffocating Turbulence, creating a storm of air with a high concentration of nitrogen and moving it around the magicians on the right. Some of them were caught off guard and were instantly knocked out but some managed to defend themselves. It was evident though, that they couldn't keep that up and the twins combined attack was going to take them out soon.

Mayumi used her Multi-Scope to ascertain the enemies' conditions and confirmed they were all on the ground. She also used the chance to decide which path they should take.

"Let's go towards the left."

"Yes, Onee-sama."

"Let's go–... *clank* What was that?"

Just as Kasumi was about to follow them, she thought she heard something behind, coming from the place where the unconscious magicians were. She turned around and immediately turned speechless at what she saw.

.

~~~Juumonji side~~~
"..."
Katsuto kept his silence as he walked with slow but steady steps. Though he seemed like he was taking a walk, his Phalanx was stopping a barrage of attacks coming from all directions. It was similar to what was happening with Masaki, the enemies were unable to break through his defenses while he just took them out one by one. Sometimes one enemy was smashed against the wall, sometimes against the floor but all who got hit Katsuto's Phalanx didn't get up again.
After he cleaned the room and moved to the hallway, he saw the enemies change their strategy. They numbered ten, five standing side by side and the other five crouching directly in front of the five standing. The ones crouching started firing their machine guns while the ones standing released their magic. It seems they planned on focusing their attacks in a single direction and hoped that would be enough. Certainly concentrating their power in a single point is better than spreading out to cover every place, but that not was not necessarily effective against Phalanx.
"This is convenient." Katsuto murmured.
Seeing as they were all in a straight path, Katsuto saw an opportunity to take them all out in a single move. He activated his move type magic and self-accelerated while keeping his Phalanx.
"Uwaaah!" one of the magicians screamed as he watched the incoming truck (Katsuto).
They realized their mistake a little too late. Their attacks not even slowing Katsuto down, he sent them all flying backwards with the power of a heavy truck. It was akin to a bowling ball making a strike against a group of pins. Their injuries were not fatal but they were not going to stand up again for quite some time.
Suddenly, the ceiling opened, revealing a hatch and something dropped on top of Katsuto, the next moment, an explosion occurred…
~~~Tatsuya side~~~

"What the hell. Could this be a miss?" Toshikazu complained.

They broke in, walked around the ground floor but couldn't find anyone. Not even a single clue about Gu Jie or Oumi Kazukiyo.

"No, I can feel a few presences on the floor above but they are faint." Tatsuya denied.

"Are they trying to hide?" Inagaki asked.

"...No, if anything, they don't feel alive at all." Tatsuya said.

"Gu Jie's puppets, huh?" Toshikazu guessed in displeasure.

"There are also a few more to the east of the mansion, Gu Jie is probably there. Let's move— Watch out!" Tatsuya warned in a hurry.

"Tch!" Toshikazu noticed a moment later.

"Urg!" Inagaki's reaction was a little slower.

The ceiling suddenly collapsed, Tatsuya and Toshikazu managed to jump away in time but Inagaki's left arm got hit by some of the falling debris. It was not a big deal but he should not count on using that arm for now. Together with the ceiling, some of the puppets also came down, with bombs attached to their bodies. Wasting no time, they charged, two at Tatsuya, two at Toshikazu and four at Inagaki. Given that Inagaki was the most vulnerable, it was a logical decision.

(I have no choice…!)

Tatsuya cursed in his mind as he activated his Decomposition. He could target more than ten targets simultaneously even under enemy fire so decomposing the eight puppets' chests was no trouble. With enough damage, the corpses would stop working. What Tatsuya really cursed was his late decision, he did not use Elemental Sight to avoid revealing all of his cards as Gu Jie would definitely notice that there was someone who could track him easily. Instead, he was forced to use his Decomposition to save Inagaki who was not going to escape the attack.

"Gu Jie is escaping through a window in the back but Oumi Kazukiyo is still in the east side of the mansion with some corpses!" Tatsuya warned.

"Go after him! We will handle Oumi Kazukiyo!" Toshikazu said.

"Roger that!" Tatsuya said as he ran and jumped through a window.

"Hope you are not too tired Inagaki." Toshikazu readied his sword.

"Please Inspector. I only need one hand for this." Inagaki also readied his weapon.

Tatsuya ran towards his bike while still keeping an eye on Gu Jie who was hijacking a police car.

At the same time as the puppets exploded inside the mansion, other puppets also suicide bombed the policemen surrounding the mansion. That was how Gu Jie managed to break through the encirclement. He was now sitting in the passenger seat of the police car, driven by a recently zombified policeman. Gu Jie hoped to take care of the pursuers with the bombs but failed. He was now going to use more desperate measures, he still had three puppets sitting in the backseats to use.

Tatsuya's mind raced, he couldn't forgive Gu Jie who treated magicians in the way Tatsuya abhorred the most, as disposable tools. If the order had been to apprehend Gu Jie, Tatsuya would still have killed him, if not during the operation then later as an assassination.

~~~Kyouko side~~~
"T-This is…!" Kyouko gasped.
The reports from all locations, aside from the Ichijou, said the same thing. The bodies were coming back to life and performing suicide attacks. As far as they were informed, Gu Jie and Oumi Kazukiyo were the only ones who could use magic to control corpses but his range was unknown. Given his skill, it should be a few kilometers at best. But, if by some chance, one or two of the traditionalists could use a similar magic… All the hideouts were close to each other, there wasn't a single base that was more than nine kilometers away from another and Oumi Kazukiyo's mansion was at the center. They thought this was supposed to be a distraction, keeping bases close so that if one got raided, Gu Jie could notice the disturbance right away and escape but, in truth, it was to keep all locations inside Gu Jie's range.
"Damn! He got us…!" Kyouko cursed under her breath.
She started calling paramedics and firefighters as some of the explosions affected the surrounding houses. Luckily, most explosions occurred inside the hideouts, but not all of them. Some enemies managed to run outside and then self-destruct.
"Tatsuya-kun, please don't let him escape." Kyouko prayed.
