Betrayal
Earth, Fire, Air, Water; the four elements that make up the world. Throughout my whole life, I have heard stories of Avatar Aang and how he took down the 100-year tyrannical reign that was the Fire Nation. Now it's been over 40 years since Ozai's rule and now a new threat emerges and a new generation is there to solve the threat. This is a story of how I met Avatar Korra and her friends as well as the adventures we went on.
On a rooftop of Republic City, Kang stood on a rooftop in his robes as he received some intel from people he hired that the Cabbage Corporation was involved in suspicious activities. He soon jumped from rooftop to rooftop and then landed on the warehouse building. He soon did a quick breaking and entering and searched the warehouse. He soon uncovered some sheets and saw that there were posters that were Equalist propaganda and saw a box. He used his hidden blade to pop the lid off and saw a bunch of electric gloves. Kang couldn't help, but smirk at the sight he was seeing.
"The police are gonna love the intel I'm going to give them," Kang said as he closed the box, "not to mention the informant will receive a large bonus."
As he started to leave the warehouse, he remembered what his father had told him about the cabbages. It was first a small business that was established in Omashu over 40 years ago. He was told of the times his grandpa Aang had destroyed the stands. But now, it is a massive corporation and Kang couldn't help but chuckle.
"A business that was trashed by Grandpa Aang in Omashu is now a multi-million yuan company in Republic City," Kang said, "well I'll be forever damned."
He lightly chuckled as he escaped the warehouse and arrived at the Metalbending Police station on a rooftop to tip them.
…
Some time had passed since the breaking and entering and Kang hasn't had to change into his robes for a while. He was reading a book and was lying down on his bed. But heard a knock on his door, making him get up and walk to the door. He opened the door and saw Korra who stood in front of his door.
"Yeah?"
"I'm going to get Mako and Bolin," Korra said as she let herself into his room. Kang was taken aback by it and was a bit annoyed as the girl didn't understand boundaries. The White Lotus could've at least taught her etiquette.
"I'm gonna try to see if they can move here," Korra said, "And before you say anything, your Dad said yes, they can live here."
"Where do they live currently?" Kang asked.
"In the attic of the Pro-Bending arena," Korra said.
Kang mouthed "oh" as he inferred that the two boys must've been alone for most of their lives.
"I was wondering if you wanna come with me?" Korra asked.
"Uh sure," Kang said as he exited his room, but he stopped at the door to open it and let Korra go through first, "after you, Miss 'Let herself into a man's bedroom.'"
Korra glared at Kang, annoyed at his remark, "What?" Kang said, "you barged into my room. Didn't the White Lotus teach you about how to not cross peoples' boundaries?"
Korra huffed in annoyance as she left his room first and he exited the room shortly after her.
The two were going towards the Pro-Bending arena and Korra was walking beside Kang. Korra felt a bit awkward as the towering sickly-pale man had a frightening presence and kept looking forward with a face of annoyance.
As Kang and Korra walked inside the building and to Mako and Bolin, she decided to ask a question, "So uhh, you're older than me, right?"
"Uh yeah," Kang said, "I was born a little less than 2 years before Grandpa Aang passed. Apparently he was there when I was born and obviously I was the only grandchild he actually spent a lot of time with. But I have no memory of him, I was just a baby when all this happened."
"Well…" Korra said, "if he were to be alive, what would you wanna ask him?"
Kang looked up as he thought of something, 'Good question, kid.' He thought to himself and it took him a little less than two seconds in real time, but in his headspace, it took him over 30. He wanted his guidance more than anything, but a part of him wanted to know if his Grandfather would love him for the path and choices he made, albeit some of them were morally questionable.
"A lot…" Kang said, "I would ask if he were to accept me for who I am. Out of the many things I would ask him, that would be the first and most important question I would ask him."
Korra saw Kang's sunken and baggy eyes could tell that something was weighing heavy on Kang's mind, could it be the fact that he thinks he tainted his legacy, could it be the amount of people he could have possibly killed, or could it be both? She didn't want to pry as they arrived at Mako and Bolin's room.
"Guys, we have good news!" Korra said.
"She does, I don't," Kang said, pointing at Korra, "I'm just here to tag along."
"Tenzin said you guys can live on Air Temple Island," Korra said excitedly, "you don't have to live on the streets anymore!"
"Oh…" Mako had a hand on the back of his head and Kang knew there was arrangements in place for where they will be staying, "we'd love to, but—"
"Asami already invited us over to live at her Dad's giant mansion!" Bolin said with giddiness.
"Well that's better than living on a secluded island that my father calls home," Kang muttered after sneaking in a scoff.
Korra glared at Kang as he made a jab towards his own Father. Kang paid no mind as Bolin stood up and walked towards his brother.
"From now on, it's gonna be a lap of luxury for the rest of us," Bolin said as he hugged his older brother, "no more living in poverty and no more working shady jobs."
"Hey you two!"
Korra started to cringe while Kang looked back as they heard the familiar voice. Kang saw Asami holding a Fire Ferret.
"I was hoping you would stop by Korra," Asami said as she let the Fire Ferret go, "but Kang~ you're a different story."
"I'm just tagging along," Kang said.
"And we're now leaving," Korra said as she grabbed Kang's wrists, "we'll see you guys around… sometime."
Kang saw Korra's dejected face and could tell that something was going on between her and Asami. But he didn't want to pry as he simply went along with Korra.
"Why not tomorrow," Asami said, "I would love to have you come visit the estate. You too Kang, you haven't stopped by to visit the house in years ever since you came back home."
"I can probably come," Kang said.
"I don't know…" Korra said, "I have some Avatar stuff to do."
"Come on Korra," Bolin said in a high-pitched tone. He held the Fire Ferret as if they were the one talking, "We all deserve a break after all this craziness. We can swim in Asami's pool, it'll be fun!"
She laughed as she said, "Alright, Pabu."
"Great, we'll see you two tomorrow," Asami said as Kang and Korra left the attic. As the Non-Bender and the Avatar left the building, Kang decided to ask, "What's next on our adventure for the day?"
"I am going to the Police Station," Korra said, "I have to talk to your parents."
"Ah~" Kang said, "I guess I can come."
"Are you sure?" Korra asked.
Kang nodded, "I'll be fine. My parents behave a lot better when they need to work together, especially my mother."
The two arrived at the Police Station and saw Tahno from the Pro-Bending tournament. He looked downtrodden and depressed. Korra approached him as Kang decided to stay standing, it didn't take long as he saw his Mother and Father talking to a man that Kang knew to be Asami's Father, Hiroshi Sato. After they were talking, the said man saw Kang and was surprised.
"Kang…" the man said with a mix of surprise and happiness, "it's been a while."
"It has, Hiroshi…" Kang said back, "hope you've been doing well."
"I have…" Hiroshi said, "I've been meaning to give you something whenever you're available."
"Actually I'm available now," Kang said.
"Perfect," Hiroshi said, "you could come with me."
The two men walked out of the police station and they started to walk towards Hiroshi's Satomobile. Hiroshi sat in the driver's seat and Kang sat in the passenger's seat. As the two drove off, Hiroshi decided to spark up a conversation.
"So what have you been doing for the last four years?" Hiroshi asked.
"I traveled around the world for two of those years," Kang said, "then I stayed with my Aunt in Zaofu for another two and then I came back home."
"Well during your travels, did you find what you were looking for?" Hiroshi asked.
"I thought I did…" Kang said as he looked out the window, "but I realized that what I'm finding is way harder than I thought."
Hiroshi understood what Kang was referring to, his own purpose. Hiroshi has known Kang since he was a young boy due to him and Asami being friends and in the same class. As Kang grew older, Hiroshi started to notice a weight that was on the boy's shoulders; it was especially prominent when his daughter, Asami and Kang were boyfriend and girlfriend. Now this weight was heavier than before Kang left the city and Hiroshi didn't know how to give him the right advice. Kang was the grandson of not only Avatar Aang and Katara, but also Toph so it would make sense for him to have a lot of weight on his shoulders. More so the fact that he thought to be an Airbender, but instead an ordinary Non-Bender. Not only that, Kang was paler than usual and his eyes looked as if he'd been through something traumatic.
"I'm sorry," was all Hiroshi could muster for the boy.
"It's not your fault," Kang said, "but enough about me, how has the company been doing?"
"It's been good," Hiroshi said, "we've been the pioneers of Republic City that I've always dreamed we would be."
"That's good," Kang said, "though I've always thought that Future Industries were going to be the pioneers of my Grandparents' city."
The two continued to talk as they arrived at Future Industries. They exited the Satomobile and entered the building. They walked to a secluded garage with Hiroshi and Kang entering. Kang was surprised at what he saw, a sport touring bike that was white and red.
"Think of this as a gift," Hiroshi said, "and I will not take no for an answer."
"Thank you," Kang said, "I'll take care of it."
"You better," Hiroshi jokes as he gives Kang the keys, "it was the most expensive motorcycle I have ever manufactured."
Kang nodded as he got on the motorcycle and the garage door opened. He started the motorcycle and started to drive off.
A new day arrived with Kang, going to the docks as he was waiting for Korra to get ready for the Mansion. Kang stood there for a good 30 minutes as she came running to the docks.
"Sorry I'm late," Korra said. Kang gave her an annoyed stare as she knew she did something wrong.
"How long did I make you wait?" Korra asked.
"Care to take a guess?" Kang asked.
"5?"
"No."
"15?"
"Not even close…" Kang said.
"Well how long?" Korra asked. She figured that he didn't have to wait that long.
"30…" Kang said as he crossed his arms.
Korra's mouth was agape as she felt bad for making him wait for that long, "I'm sorry for making you late."
"Well, you're here now, so let's go," Kang said as they left the island and sailed to Republic City. As they arrived at the dock, Kang walked to a storage garage and had Korra follow him. The door opened and his motorcycle was displayed. Kang got on and he started the engine.
"Get on, kid," Kang said, "we'll get to Asami's sooner."
She later hopped on and wrapped her arms around Kang's waist and he drove off at high speeds to Asami's Mansion. Kang drove up along the hills and into a secluded area of land that led to a massive estate. Korra saw this and was breath taken by the home.
"She lives here?" Korra asked.
"Yep," Kang said, "I haven't been here for years."
"You've been here?" Korra asked.
"Yeah, many times," Kang said, "Asami and I dated before I left the city."
Korra's eyes widened, "You and Asami were a thing?!"
"Yeah," Kang said nonchalantly, "she also has been to the island to hangout with me. Not to mention she and I…"
Kang stopped himself from speaking further and Korra realized what he was insinuating, "Wait you and her had—"
"Yes, Korra, we did it!" Kang said in annoyance, "Now be quiet and I trust you to not tell my father of my past nightly escapades!"
The two got off his motorcycle as they walked up the series of stairs. Korra followed Kang as he was the one who has been to this massive piece of land that Asami calls a home.
"So who visited who first?" Korra asked.
"She visited first," Kang said, "my Father and Pema loved having her around the island. When she and I were teenagers, we would play with Jinora and Ikki. I visited her place as well and her parents loved having me around. Hiroshi treated me as if I was a son-in-law."
"She has a Mom," Korra asked.
"HAD," Kang said.
Korra stopped as she heard that, but Kang kept walking forward as she knew something was going on. There must've been something that happened. Soon, as they arrived at the main door a butler arrived and was surprised to see Kang.
"Kang, it's been a while," the butler said.
"Indeed it has," Kang said, "I brought a friend, Avatar Korra."
"Perfect," the butler said, "Ms. Sato has been waiting for you two."
They followed the butler into the pool area. Inside it was where Asami, Mako, and Bolin were in the pool. Asami and Mako were sitting and relaxing by the pool while Bolin was swimming there.
"Ms. Sato," the butler said, "Avatar Korra and Kang Beifong are now here."
"Hey guys," Mako waved at the two.
"Glad you made it," Asami said.
"Welcome to paradise," Bolin said.
Kang gave a lighthearted laugh, "No need for a welcome, I've been here a lot before."
"Looks like you guys settled right in," Korra said slightly sarcastically.
"Pretty much, except SOMEONE forgot to ask her father if we could stay here."
Mako said, swimming over to Korra.
"Yeah, but I smoothed it over with him. It's easier to ask for his forgiveness than permission." Asami said.
"This is the greatest place in the world!" Bolin said, getting out of the pool with Pabu on his shoulder. "Watch this, watch this. Fetch me my towel, good sir."
Bolin said in a formal voice.
"Yes, Master… Bolin," The butler said, taking a folded towel and walking to Bolin.
"Master Bolin! Ha! I love this guy," Bolin said, holding his arms out.
"Now, pat me dry," Bolin said.
"Don't forget Master Pabu," Bolin said.
"Wouldn't dream of it, sir," The butler said, putting the towel over Pabu and rubbing him dry making the Fire Ferret's fur become bushy and as the butler turns around Bolin jumps back into the pool much to the butler's annoyance.
Kang couldn't help but feel bad for the butler. He was doing his job and Bolin was kind of giving him a hard time.
"So… what do you have planned for us today?" Korra asked, "Let me guess, shopping, makeovers…"
I have something a little more exciting in mind," Asami said. She looked at Kang who widened his eyes at what she was insinuating.
"We're gonna go to the tracks, huh?" Kang asked.
…
Later at a racetrack two Satomobiles are driving down the track.
"Pretty cool, huh?" Asami asked.
"Way cooler than a makeover," Korra said.
"This is where Future Industries test-drives their Satomobiles. Ever been behind the wheel?" Asami asked.
Korra shook her head.
"You want me to take you for a spin?" Asami asked.
"Let's do it!" Korra said.
Asami looked at Kang, "Wanna race like old times?"
"I'm going to win like usual," Kang said.
"You haven't been behind the wheel for four years," Asami said, with a smirk, "but I have."
"Oh it's on!" Kang said.
Two Satomobiles stand next to each other and Korra puts on goggles while sitting behind Asami while Kang is sitting in the other car and the race starts as a man in blue waves a white flag and Asami falls behind first but keeps up fast as Mako and Bolin heer from the sidelines. Asami overtakes the other mobile while her back wheel is grazing the wall and Kang did a crazy maneuver that ended up blowing past Asami as he won the race and stopped the car.
Kang got out with the biggest shit-eating grin on his face as Asami and Korra got out.
"Hey ladies~" Kang said.
"Ha ha, very funny," Asami said sarcastically.
"C'mon!" Kang said, "I was able to back up my talk."
"That wasn't the only thing you were able to back up~," Asami said, matching the grin that Kang had. Mako soon had a look on his face and Kang saw it.
"You may wanna be careful," Kang said, "your boyfriend is not liking the way we're talking to each other."
"I gotta admit, I had you all wrong. I thought you were kind of… prissy," Korra said.
"It's all right, people usually assume that I'm daddy's helpless little girl, but I can handle myself. I mean, I've been in self-defense classes since I was this high," Asami said, indicating her height with her hand next to her waist.
"Dad made sure that I would always be able to protect myself," Asami said.
…
The whole crew returned to the Mansion as Bolin came running in, "Emergency, emergency coming through, beep beep!" Bolin said, running for the bathroom with his hands covering his groin.
"Is there another bathroom I can use?" Korra asked.
"We have a lady's powder room upstairs, first door on your right. You can freshen up there," Asami said.
"Thanks," Korra said.
As Korra went upstairs, Kang looked at Mako.
"So how is it like living in a large place like this?" Kang asked.
"It's not bad," Mako said, "though it is a massive leap from where I used to live."
"Take it from me," Kang said, "when I was traveling, all I did was live on the streets for a year and then I stayed with a family member who lived in a similar place like this."
"What made you want to leave Republic City," Mako said, "you Grandfather and Firelord Zuko built this city."
"That may be true," Kang said, "but I didn't want to stay in a city where people viewed me as a failure."
Mako figured that Kang would be popular in schools and throughout town as he is the son of Lin Beifong and Councilman Tenzin.
"Sorry," Mako said.
"Not your fault," Kang said.
Soon Bolin came back and asked the question, "How did you and Asami meet?"
"We've known each other since we were little," Asami said, "we went to the same school together and met each other at Gala's."
"Though as we got older, we snuck out of the galas to go hangout at the parks," Kang said.
Before Kang could say anything else, Korra ran past them while grabbing Kang by the wrist.
"You're both leaving? But I thought..." Asami was cut off.
"Uh, sorry! I forgot, we're supposed to airsit, I mean, babybend, I-I mean babysit the Airbender kids," Korra said.
Kang looked at Korra and knew something was going on so he decided to play along with it.
"Yeah," Kang said, "Father is gonna be busy and Pema is not feeling great so Korra and I have to watch my brother and sisters. See you guys later."
When they left the Mansion and were a good distance away, Kang looked at Korra.
"What happened," Kang asked.
—Flashback—
Korra is washing and drying herself and then she picks up a powder sponge while looking at it intensely and then smashes it onto her face and starts choking and then she leaves the room but then she hears something.
"No, no! No, I assure you, everything is going exactly as planned. Uh… uh, yes… luckily, the Cabbage Corp investigation has brought us enough time. Trust me, but at the end of the week… we'll be ready to strike!" A voice said Korra sneaks toward the room and looks into the room through the keyhole and sees someone sitting at a desk and it's revealed to be Hiroshi who is talking on the phone and then he hangs up the phone making Korra shocked.
—Present—
Kang was in disbelief for a minute, but then saw Korra's expression and knew she was telling the truth. Kang kind of figured that she sucked at lying anyways.
"Alright," Kang said, "we will tell our parents."
"So, you two think Mr. Sato manufactured those gloves for the Equalists, then framed Cabbage Corp?" Tenzin asked.
"Those are bold accusations, but what proof do you have?" Lin asked.
"Well, we don't exactly have proof, but I know what I heard from Mr. Sato," Korra said.
"He does have the means," Lin said, "and he has a motive."
The Avatar blinked. "A motive?"
"Four years ago, the Agni Kai Triad broke into the Sato Estate with the intention of committing robbery," Tenzin replied with a sad look on his face, one that his son shared, "The situation got out of control, and their robbery attempt ended with the death of Sato's wife. That tragic incident left the Sato family devastated."
Lin growled remembering the event, "Our son was there on that day too with Asami." She said
Korra's eyes widened, "Wh-what happened?" she asked.
Kang sighed, "It all started when…"
—Flashback—
A 15 year-old Kang was riding on Oogi as Tenzin was dropping his son to see Asami. The two noticed the door wide open and Kang knew something suspicious was going on. Kang got off and looked to his father.
"Dad, I need you to stay out here," Kang said, "I'm gonna go in to see what's going on?"
Tenzin nodded as he jumped off of Oogi and guarded the front door as Kang entered. His eyes widened and heart started to sink as he saw the place being trashed.
"Asami!" Kang shouted as he started to search for her, hoping he was okay.
He ran around and it took him some time as he ran in and out of every room of the mansion, by the time he found Asami. She was crying beside the body of the now dead mother of her's.
"No…" was all Kang could muster up.
He approached Asami as he put a hand on her shoulder.
Asami saw Kang and tackled him in a hug as he held her tight in his arms.
…
The two teens were now at Air Temple Island as Kang didn't want to keep Asami at the Mansion. She was in Kang's room as he sat by Asami, holding her hand and Tenzin standing in front of them.
Tenzin asked her, "What happened?"
"Some people from the Agni Kai Triad came to the Mansion," Asami said, "Mom was protecting me as she was…"
Asami stopped talking as it was starting to make her cry again. Kang on the other hand had a silent rage in him as he started to keep Asami in his arms. Tenzin said nothing as he went straight to the Police Station to talk to Lin about what had happened.
After quite some time, Kang sat by the bed as he was letting Asami sleep in it. He stayed by her side for quite a while and as soon as she was asleep, he left the bedroom, going to the Agni Kai Triad HQ.
…
It was nighttime in Republic City as the Agni Kai Traid's HQ was lively. They were cashing in some of the goods that they stole from the Sato Mansion.
The leader at the time, Dirty Dao was amazed at the expensive stuff his boys took and how much yuans they were going to make.
"Boys," Dao said, "you really outdid yourselves."
The triad members who stole from the mansion were glad that their boss was happy and started to talk about their compensation.
Meanwhile outside, a guard was standing there, but soon a man in black clothing and a black katana attached on their back, popped out of the shadows and grabbed the guard. The man in black brought the guard into the shadows and took him out.
Out came the same hooded man as he saw the other guard so he was quick by throwing a shuriken, killing the one. The dark figure soon kicked the door open as he saw a bunch of Agni Kai Triad members, some were playing Pai Sho, some were smoking, and some were enjoying themselves with some prostitutes. The dark figure took off their hood and it was revealed to be the teenage Kang.
"I'm only gonna say this once," Kang said, "get out…"
He took out his katana as the women started to run out of the building, leaving the Agni Kai triad to fight Kang.
"Look what we have here," a Triad member said, "we got the Councilman's and Chief's brat rolling up, playing ninja."
Kang said nothing as he closed the door and soon held his katana and got into a stone stance. He simply said nothing as the Triad started to attack him.
…
Dirty Dao after quite some time started to hear screaming and sounds of shanks and things being broken as the door opened, a decapitated head was rolling towards Dao's feet. Dao started to shake in fear as he looked to the door and saw Kang who had blood all over his face and outfit as he started to approach Dao.
Kang sheathed his Katana as Dao used Firebending to hit Kang, but he dodged it and dashed to Chi-block the Triad.
Dao was soon stunned as he started to look at Kang with fear.
"Please, let me live!" Dao said.
Kang said nothing as he picked up Dao by the collar and punched him in the face.
"You're not worth a quick death," Kang said, "you deserve a slow and painful death."
Kang soon started to punch Dao across the face in repeated fashion. He continued to punch Dao's face as it started to bleed and bruises were visible and he slowly died due to the injuries he sustained from Kang's assault.
…
Tenzin and Lin arrived at the Agni Kai Triad HQ only for them to find a bloody and gory mess. There were triad members that were beheaded, some had missing arms and legs, and some had organs hanging out of their bodies. They soon ran inside to Dirty Dao's office and as they did, the only look on their face was horror.
The two covered their mouths as they witnessed their teenage son who was covered in blood, mauling on the dead Dao. Kang soon stopped as he looked back and saw his parents looking at him with shock and horror. He soon came back to his senses and saw the blood all over his body that didn't belong to him and looked back to see the corpse of Dao whose skull was caving in. Kang soon started to shake as he looked at his parents. He said nothing as he stood up and walked past them.
—Present—
Korra was shocked to hear the gruesome story of Kang's murdering spree and started to feel a bit sick herself.
"That killing spree was known as the Agni Triad Massacre," Lin said, "Kang had killed over 20 Triad members."
"It was gonna not be long before the police found out it was me," Kang said, "so I decided to leave the city to travel and find clarity."
"Even after the whole incident," Tenzin said, changing the subject "it's possible that he's been harboring Anti-Bending sentiment all this time."
"Maybe we should look at Sato a little more closely," Lin said, and she later looked at Kang.
"And start wearing your robes," Lin ordered Kang, "it seems like we will need your 'expertise' for this investigation."
Korra, Kang (who was wearing his robes), and his parents were in front of the mansion. As they started to search, Kang decided to stay outside to keep watch as more Metalbenders arrived.
As the Metalbenders were searching, he stood outside and leaned on the wall of one of the buildings. He took out a photo which showed a baby Kang with his Grandpa Aang, Grandmas Katara and Toph.
"Am I doing the right thing guys?"
"Kang!" he heard as he turned to see her and quickly put the photo back in his leather jacket.
"Yeah?" he asked.
"Check this out," she said as she handed him the letter.
He read it and raised an eyebrow, "Are we sure about this?" he asked as it could be a trap or something.
"We have nothing else to look at," She said
He nodded at her, "Let's go then."
As Kang, who was still in his robes with a hood on, was underneath the Silk Road Bridge he was thinking to himself, 'Why do I have a bad feeling about this?' This was the place where they were supposed to meet someone who could tell them the 'truth' about Hiroshi Sato, whatever that meant. Korra, Tenzin, Lin, and a small squad of four metalbenders were waiting for him, and had it not been for the uniqueness of the situation, Kang would've gone home to enjoy a hot bath and go to bed. This conspiracy was really getting out of hand, and Kang just wanted to put an end to it.
With a weary face and heavy shoulders, Kang walked under the Silk Road Bridge, where he met Korra, Tenzin, Lin, and two agents of the Metalbending Police Force. "The meeting is about to start. Is everyone ready?" Lin asked, receiving a nod from everyone.
"May I ask what are these two doing here, Mother?" Kang asked, jerking his chin up at the two other metalbenders.
"I told them to come with us in case we're walking straight into an ambush. We can't be careless right now," Lin replied, to which Kang nodded in understanding. The group started moving, keeping their eyes wide open. Whoever had delivered that note hadn't specified in which exact place of the Silk Road Bridge he was going to be waiting for them and this location was rather ideal for a setup, which made Kang feel tense. Kang and Korra were walking next to each other, but they weren't exchanging words or even glances as they had yet to smoke the pipe of peace together after their brief discussion earlier that night.
Besides, this was hardly the time or the place to talk about that.
After fifteen minutes of walking, they were stopped by the sound of a loud whisper, "Pssst, over here."
A figure slowly appeared from behind a column, wearing a trench coat, a flat cap, and fingerless wool gloves. The collars of his long coat were raised, making it difficult for Kang to get a clear view of his face due to how dark the night was. Whoever this guy was, it was obvious that he didn't want people to recognize him, and Kang felt the urge to get his hidden blade out just in case.
"You have nothing to worry about. There's no one else here except for us," the man said.
Lin took a step forward, retracted the sole of her boot and stomped her foot on the ground, making use of her seismic abilities to detect any other presences nearby. After half a minute later, she went back to her previous posture and slid her boot sole back out. "The area is clear. I'm assuming you're the one who wrote that note and gave it to Avatar Korra here."
The man nodded. "That's right. I generally don't like acting with such secrecy, but there was no other way to arrange this meeting. My name is Teru. I work at one of the warehouses you guys raided."
"What do you have on Hiroshi Sato?" Korra immediately asked, but Teru raised his hand at her.
"Not so fast. Before I speak, I want something from Chief Beifong and Avatar Korra. I want the two of you to promise me that I will not be sent to jail over the hypothetical activities I may or may not have taken part in regarding this conversation."
Kang didn't like where this was going. The way Teru spoke suggested that he had indeed engaged in at least one crime in the past, but he wasn't admitting to it, not from a legal perspective anyway. "That's a bit too much to ask considering we don't know how important or reliable your information is. We can discuss reducing jail time if it comes to that, but-"
"But nothing. These are my terms, and whether this conversation continues or not depends entirely on you. If you do agree to these conditions, you will understand why I placed them on the table. Do you agree, or should we go home and pretend this never happened?"
Lin looked at Kang and nodded as he walked towards Teru. He extended his Hidden Blade and had the tip of the blade pushed against his neck, "You will tell us everything or your throat will be slit."
Teru looked at the police as if they were going to intervene, but they did nothing. So he gulped as he started to talk, "Okay, okay. I joined the Equalists about a year ago. I thought Amon could make life better for us non-benders, but not like this. His war against the city has gotten way out of hand."
"And what does that have to do with Hiroshi Sato?" Tenzin asked while his son stared at the man intently.
"It has everything to do with him. He's the one who's been manufacturing the equipment used by the Equalists all along, the same equipment that was found during the raid on Cabbage Corps. Amon and Hiroshi are allies, close allies!"
"I knew it! I knew Hiroshi had been up to something all this time!" Korra exclaimed, smacking her open palm with the side of her fist.
"What else," Kang said as he pushed the blade a bit further into Teru's neck.
"And there's more. Hiroshi has been working on a new invention, a weapon that will give the Equalists a huge advantage. It has yet to be tested, but once it's ready, only the Spirits know what kind of destruction will Amon and his followers unleash upon Republic City," Teru said in a panicked manner.
"Where exactly is this new weapon being developed? We checked all of Future Industries' warehouses and found no evidence whatsoever," Lin said.
"That's because there's a secret factory where Hiroshi manufactures the devices used by the Equalist movement," Teru said, "I've been there myself, and I've seen what kind of stuff is being developed inside that factory."
"Where?" Kang asked.
"Right underneath the Sato Estate."
Except for Kang, everyone in the group exchanged surprised glances. No one had considered the possibility of a secret factory built underground. The Sato estate was located high up in the hills, and the terrain was big enough to hide a factory below the earth's surface, which would allow Hiroshi to design and produce technological objects in favor of the Equalist cause while offering his cooperation to the Police Department without getting caught. Of course, it would've been foolish to believe a complete stranger based on his word alone, which was why Kang used his sixth(eagle) sense to detect any abnormal change in Teru's heartbeat pattern in case he lied.
"Kang, is this man telling the truth or not?" Lin asked while Tenzin, Korra, and the two agents of the Metalbending Police Force were holding their breath.
Kang's hooded face was down as his eyes were not visible to the shadow. A small knot formed in Korra's throat when she saw Kang's face. His eyebrows furrowed with shock, anger, and betrayal. He retracted his hidden blade and let the man go.
"He told the truth," Kang said in a low voice.
Raiding the Sato mansion is a risky move with Tarrlok breathing down your neck," Tenzin commented to Lin, "If you're wrong…" he trailed off.
"I know, I can kiss my job goodbye, but protecting Republic City is all I care about… even if I have to go against someone whom our son is close to," Lin said with sadness, "We can't let Amon get his hands on this new weapon," She finished.
Korra was sitting and looked to the other side to see Kang who crossed his arms and his hood was one, it covered his eyes as it narrowed with determination to take down Amon and this anti-bending terrorist organization. When he came back to Republic City, he swore to protect what his Grandpa Aang and Grandma Toph created, even if it meant killing people along the way.
He soon heard Korra approach him.
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," Kang said dismissively, they were now above the Sato Mansion, "let's just get this over with."
When they arrived at the front door, Kang kicked the door open.
"What are you doing here?" Asami asked in surprise.
"We have reason to believe that there is a factory hidden below the mansion," Lin stated
Asami got up in anger and yelled at Tenzin and Lin, "I think I would have noticed if there was a factory under my house. My dad isn't an Equalist, you three have known him for years!" she exclaimed and she turned to Kang and threw her hand as she slapped him right across the face, hard.
Kang didn't react as he simply walked past her with his eyes hidden in his hood.
"Where is your father?" Tenzin asked, wishing to get her attention away from Kang.
"In his workshop behind the house," She answered in a calmer tone.
They group walked to the workshop with the other kids in tow as the metal bending officers secured the perimeter.
They entered the shop and did a quick sweep of the shop.
"Dad? Hello?" Asami called out as she entered the workshop.
"Chief, the estate has been secured. No one has left the workshop since we've arrived," An officer said.
"Perhaps we just couldn't see him leaving," Lin said as she walked to the center of the room.
She raised her foot and the slot under it shot open, exposing her foot and she slammed it down and used her seismic sensing.
"There's a tunnel beneath the workshop running deep into the mountain side," Lin said
"What? There's no tunnel," Asami stated
Lin lifted her arms and the metal floor crinkled and she lifted it and threw it to the side.
They stared down the tunnel and saw how deep it went and a trolley that went down it.
"Whoa, do you think your dad knows about this tunnel?" Bolin asked in a loud whisper.
"I don't understand, there must be an explanation," Asami argued weakly.
"Maybe… you don't know everything about your father. I'm sorry," Korra said to her.
"Officers, into the tunnel. Be careful," Lin ordered, "Kang, you come with us."
Asami, Mako, and Bolin were about to follow, but Lin stopped them, "Uh-uh, you three stay up here. Officer Song, keep an eye on them," Lin ordered despite their protest.
Asami now feeling guilty for slapping Kang tried to reach out for him, but he ignored her as he joined Korra and the others down the tunnel.
"Sato truly likes to go for extravagance," Lin commented.
They continued walking and they saw some kind of humanoid robot or something.
"And I'm guessing those are the new weapons," Korra said as she looked at them.
"Sato was lying alright, but where is he?" Tenzin questioned
Suddenly a giant wall of metal blocked the exit for them, taking away the light.
Lin ran up to the wall of metal and tried to bend it, but realized she couldn't.
"I'm afraid you won't be able to Metalbend that wall, Lin," said the voice of Hiroshi as suddenly rows of green lights lit up the room.
"It's solid platinum!" he said as the mecha tanks came to life and surrounded them.
"My mecha tanks are also made of platinum as well. Not even your renowned mother could bend a metal so pure," He said from the mecha tank.
Kang took out his sword and dagger as he slowly approached Hiroshi with anger.
"Hiroshi!" Kang screamed, "Why the hell are you doing this?!"
"I am doing what I believe in Kang. Nothing more and nothing less," He answered.
Kang soon started to shake in fury as he started to scream, "So you're telling me that me killing the Agni Kai triad members meant nothing to you!? You know what I did with these fucking hands?!"
Kang's hand was shaking as he was starting to lose his rationality and started to attack, "If me killing those triads meant nothing, then me killing you will not as well!"
Kang soon jumped as he stabbed his sword through the glass of the mecha tank where Hiroshi was. A claw soon grabbed Kang and shocked the hooded man, rendering him unconscious. Soon the other's tried to attack, but they all were knocked out as two chi-blocked approached Hiroshi who was out of his mecha tank.
"Drop him by his mother and father," Hiroshi said and the chi blockers nodded as they dumped Kang next to his mother and father.
What they didn't see was Mako and Bolin sneak in and pick up Korra and Tenzin and drag Kang and Lin.
"Not so fast boys," Hiroshi said as he wore two electro gloves and the Lieutenant had his electrified kali sticks ready to strike the brothers.
Bolin dropped Lin and used Tenzin's arm to wave at Hiroshi, "Hello, wow what really… swell… scary factory you have here under your giant mansion," He said.
"Sponsoring our team, supporting the Avatar, it was all just a big cover," Mako stated in understanding.
"Yes and the most difficult part was watching my daughter traipse around with a fire bending street rat like you, Kang was a better choice for her than you, boy!" Hiroshi responded in anger.
"Dad, stop!" said the voice of Asami.
Hiroshi turned to face his daughter in shock.
Asami's face held nothing but betrayal, "Why?" she pleaded
Hiroshi lowered his head, "Sweetie, I wanted to keep you out of this for as long as I could, but now that you know the truth please, forgive me," he asked.
Asami just continued to look at her father, unsure of what to do.
"These people… these benders… they've been the cause of people's suffering for ages. All the bending rulers like Chin the Conqueror, Fire Lord Sozin, Fire Lord Ozai, Yakone, and every other bender who craved control over all nations have been responsible for countless deaths and wars that resolved nothing towards peace. They took your mother, the love of my life from me and they almost took you too. Don't you see that Amon can be the one to do what even the Avatar can't do; he'll create a peace that'll last forever by eliminating bending. Without Bending there would be no one who could rise to power to try and rule all nations like the previous benders have tried to do, there'd be no gangs and no thugs to threaten innocent people. Without benders we could live in a world where everyone would be treated as equals and no one would have the power to kill anyone else with bending or technology once we create the new world!" Hiroshi paused for a moment.
"Kang," Hiroshi said, "he avenged your Mother and I am grateful for that, but I still cannot be on the side of benders as his parents are benders. They've ruined the world, but with Amon we can fix it and build a perfect world together! We can help people like us everywhere," He took off one of his electro gloves and handed it to Asami, "Join me Asami," He requested.
Asami just stood there, shocked, afraid, and confused, but after a moment she gained a determined look in her eyes and she walked forward and took the glove and placed it on.
"No…" Mako whispered in sadness.
"I love you dad," Asami said as she shocked him.
The Lieutenant went to attack her, but she kicked his first kali stick out of his hand and caught his other arm and shocked him with the glove.
"Let's get out of here!" Mako as he grabbed Kang and headed to the hole they came from just as the other mecha tanks came to life.
"My metalbenders are on their way to Amon and it's all my fault. Tarrlok's right, I failed as Chief. First thing in the morning I'm handing in my resignation," She said in sadness.
"No! You can't give up like this," Tenzin argued.
"I'm not giving up," Lin said with a grunt as she sat up from the bench she was laying on, "I'm going to find my officers and take Amon down, but I'm going to do it my way... outside the law." She said with determination, now she understood why Kang did things his way. The law was simply inefficient for people like Amon.
Korra and Mako were talking as the two made amends to their friendship.
"So what did Hiroshi mean when he said Kang avenged Asami's Mom," Mako asked.
"You heard of the Agni Kai Massacre, right?" Korra asked.
Mako nodded as he said, "They said that the killer was some hooded ninja—" his eyes widened as he realized who the hooded ninja was those years ago. He looked past Korra at Kang who was talking to Asami and realized that Kang was the one who caused the Agni Kai Massacre.
Meanwhile, Asami and Kang were talking.
"So you're the one who killed those Agni Kai Triads years ago," Asami said.
Kang looked ahead, ashamed of what he did years ago.
"Killing is like a drug," Kang said, "once you're regularly used to it, it gets hard to withdraw from it."
Soon Kang felt Asami hugging him as she held onto his white robes, tightly while crying into his chest. Kang said nothing as he held her close to him. He didn't know why she was crying, but she did. She was crying because her best-friend and now ex-boyfriend became someone different from the Kang she once knew. The Kang she knew was always carefree and was looking for trouble. The man she was holding onto was now a man who had pent up rage and aggression from those years ago. She couldn't save her Dad, but she hoped that she could save Kang, her best friend and the one she once loved.
A/N: Thank you for reading! So Kang has a sense that assassins do which is called Eagle Sense in the AC fandom, but in LOK, it's just a rare sixth sense.
