Chapter 1: Lost in Time
I blinked. That was all I did. I just blinked. In that moment it felt like I was placed on fast forward. I saw the Sun and the Moon chase each other, and I heard the sound of the waves crashing into the shore. I felt every second hit me in the chest like a freight train as I crashed into the soft sand below me. It felt like I had been holding my breath for years and I was finally able to breathe. Euphoric. Yet I couldn't stop the burning sensation in my chest or the pit in my stomach from growing. Something was wrong.
"What happened?" I thought to myself taking in my surroundings. All around me where there was once peace and unparalleled happiness, there was now destruction and an overbearing atmosphere of death and despair.
"One second ago I was standing on the beach in Montauk with my mom- WAIT MOM" Stumbling to my feet with an overwhelming sense of urgency, followed by a wave of nausea I look around for my mom but she is nowhere to be found.
"MOM! WHERE ARE YOU" I shouted as I ran towards the cabin where we were staying. Slamming open the door I ran inside shouting for my mom but no one answered. Frantically searching the entire cabin I can't help but think of the worst.
"Just breathe Percy, just breathe" Trying my best to calm myself down.
Finally able to catch my breath and think a little more clearly. I take a look around and started to come up with a plan, which unfortunately I'm not very good at. First things first, try the phone. Stumbling over to the landline on the wall in the kitchen, I pick it up and start dialing my mom's cell phone. Nothing but a dial tone. Dialing 911 just like my mom taught me to, I pray they pick up the phone. They didn't.
Putting the phone back, I sit down on the couch and try to suppress the rising panic in my gut. Don't get me wrong I'm used to being alone sometimes, with my mom working and Gabe occasionally going to play poker at his buddies house, I sometimes had the apartment to myself. But this was different, I'm not used to my mom disappearing from right beside me.
"I need to calm down, I can't find my mom if I'm freaking out" Heading towards the bathroom, I decide to splash some cold water on my face, it always helped me when Gabe had one of his "bad" days. Stepping into the bathroom I turn on the light- and nothing. Great. On top of missing my mom I also have no electricity. Fortunately (or unfortunately) there was enough light coming through the small window that allowed me to see myself and the mirror. I didn't recognize what was staring back at me. It was definitely me, but it wasn't me. I was older, if I had to guess I would say about 16-17. Inspecting the man in the mirror closer I could see that my hair had gotten long. Too long. As well as the more pronounced jawline and very slight stubble on my chin. It was as if I was transported years into the future. I wasn't the twelve year old boy I remember being 20 minutes ago.
"Child of the Sea, where are you?" A faint feminine voice sounded from outside. Startled out of my inspection of myself, I was so happy to see another human being that the wording went over my head.
"Please child, I mean no harm. I can help you!" Seeing a womanly figure outside through the window in the living room, I was filled with relief, I swing open the door and begin to run out to my mom. Only once I got within eyesight of her did I realize that she was most definitely NOT my mom.
"Stranger danger" My moms voice sung in my head, but it was too late. She was already walking over to me. As she got closer I took a few steps back and observed her up and down. She was about the same height as me, around 5'10'' with black hair, with what looked like literal waves moving around her body as clothes.
"Thank the gods, it's true. We are not alone." She covered her mouth and her eyes looked like they were tearing up.
Deciding not to trust the strange crying lady, I take a few more steps back towards the cabin, never taking my eyes off of her.
"Please child, let me help you. You are too precious to lose. I promise I do not wish to harm you" she said, almost pleadingly to me and taking a step forward.
"I don't know who you are, and I don't need your help. I need to find my mom." I don't trust this, she looked at me like she's never seen a kid before.
"My name is Eurydice, I am a Nereid in service to my father. I felt your presence and rushed to see if it was true." She explained gently
"To see if what was true? And what do you mean by presence? Do you know where my mom is?" I knew I was asking too many questions but I didn't care I was getting tired of this game.
Staring at me as if I was a kicked puppy she kneeled down and said
"Peace child, I will explain your questions one at a time. Firstly I must ask, how much do you know of our world?"
"Our world? Uhh it's a big round ball of dirt and water?" What was she talking about
She laughed softly, "No child, the Greek world. Our world of gods and monsters."
This lady was out of her mind.
"Will you please stop calling me child? My name is Percy. Are you talking about the Greek myths? Like Theseus and Orion and stuff?"
She nodded her head "Yes Percy" she stressed my name. "Though they aren't so much as myths. They are all true events. Well most of them." She said matter of factly.
"Alright lady, what are you-" she cut me off by raising a hand and turning her head as if she was listening for something
"Come Percy, we can't stay here. We have to leave." She stood up hurriedly and reached forward. Instinctively I took a step back.
"I'm not going anywhere with you lady, get away from me!" I turned around and started running back towards the cabin.
"Percy no!" She screamed from behind me as an entire TREE flew past me, inches from my face.
Too shocked to speak, I turn to see where the tree came from to see something that shocked me to my core. An eight foot tall man with one eye was sprinting at me from the other side of the beach. Before I could react something snatched me from behind and was hauling me to the ocean
"I'm sorry Percy, but we must leave NOW!" She had me by the waist and was hauling me towards the waves. The only thing I could think about was how strong this seemingly normal lady was. That was until my head hit the water and we shot out further into the ocean.
Trying to collect my bearings I tried to find a way out, but her grip wasn't loosening. That was when I started freaking out again. I started to pound on her arm as she dragged me further into the depths, my vision slowly starting to turn to black.
"Breathe Percy." She looked at me expectantly
Was this lady insane? We are 30 feet under the water and she wants me to breathe?
"Just do it Percy, breathe. We are in your domain."
The burning sensation in my lungs beat out whatever willpower I had and I opened my mouth, expecting the rush of water to drown me. But there was nothing. It was as if I was still standing on that beach.
"This isn't real right? I'm dreaming?" I thought to myself as she nodded approvingly though still not loosening the grip she held on my shirt.
Accepting the fact that she was not letting go of me, I decided to wait it out and do my best to escape when she drops her guard.
Eventually we starting rising towards the surface, until we broke through and flew up onto what seemed to be a.. fishing dock? Coughing and sputtering the water out of my lungs and mouth, I eventually look up to see Eurydice walking towards me with what seemed to be a homeless fisherman.
"Here he is father." She gestured towards me as the ugly fisherman walked towards me and kneeled down in front of me. "His name is Percy."
Slowly a toothy grin formed on his face as the smell of his breath hit me like a truck. "Well hello there little demigod."
