Then, it shifted to the moment when both Thomas Newton and Gabriel Arepo met, back at April 2018.
The atmosphere at the New Haven PD crackled with tension. Arepo's arrival had stirred up whispers and rumors among the other officers, his demeanor and unconventional methods earning him no shortage of detractors.
But Thomas, ever the curious soul, saw something in Arepo that piqued his interest—a spark of something beneath the stoic façade that others failed to see. Ignoring the skepticism of his colleagues, he made the bold decision to partner up with Arepo, much to the confusion of Captain Freeman.
As they embarked on their first case together, Captain Freeman couldn't help but voice his concerns to Thomas. "Are you sure about this, Newton?" he asked, his brow furrowed with doubt. "Arepo's methods may be…unorthodox, to say the least."
Thomas met the captain's gaze with a determined expression, his conviction unwavering. "I want to give him a chance, sir," he replied firmly. "There's more to Arepo than meets the eye, and I intend to find out what makes him tick."
With a sigh, Captain Freeman reluctantly conceded, knowing that Thomas was not one to be swayed once his mind was made up. And so, Thomas and Arepo set out on their journey together, their partnership forged in the crucible of uncertainty and distrust, but bound by a shared determination to seek out the truth, no matter the cost.
As they drove through the city streets, Thomas glanced over at Gabriel, the weight of their shared silence pressing down upon them. With a sigh, he decided to broach the subject that had been weighing on his mind since they first met.
"Hey, Arepo," Thomas began, his voice tentative. Gabriel responded by saying "Gabriel". ", Right, Gabriel. So I've been meaning to ask you...where are you from originally?"
Gabriel's gaze remained fixed on the road ahead, his expression unreadable. "Mexicali," he replied simply, his voice tinged with a hint of reluctance.
"Ah, Mexicali," Thomas nodded, sensing the significance of the revelation. "That must have been quite a change, coming all the way to Connecticut."
Gabriel shrugged nonchalantly, but Thomas could sense there was more to the story than Gabriel was letting on. "And what about you, Thomas?" Gabriel asked, deflecting the attention away from himself. "Where do you come from?"
Thomas hesitated for a moment, pondering how much to reveal. "I'm from New Haven originally," he said finally. "Grew up here, went to school here...it's home, I guess."
Their conversation drifted into a comfortable lull, but Thomas couldn't shake the feeling that there was still so much left unsaid between them. "You know, Gabriel," he ventured, breaking the silence once more. "I couldn't help but notice...you seem to have a bit of a...stoic streak."
Gabriel glanced at him sidelong, a hint of surprise flickering in his eyes. "Yeah, I guess you could say that I am what they call a nihilist," he replied, his tone guarded.
Thomas nodded thoughtfully, mulling over Gabriel's response. "I've always been more of a believer in...well, something greater, I suppose," he admitted, choosing his words carefully.
As Thomas drove through the dimly lit streets of New Haven, his mind raced with thoughts of the case ahead. The autumn chill seeped through the car window, casting a somber mood over the city. Glancing at his new partner in the passenger seat, Thomas cleared his throat, breaking the silence that hung between them.
"So, Gabriel," Thomas began, his voice calm but curious. "You're a new guy in town, huh? What made you want to join the force here in New Haven?"
Gabriel shifted in his seat, his gaze fixed on the passing scenery outside. "Honestly, I could say to move away from trouble from my hometown," he replied, his tone tinged with a hint of melancholy. "I needed to get away from Mexicali, start fresh somewhere new."
Thomas nodded, understanding the sentiment all too well. "I hear you," he said, his eyes flicking briefly to the rearview mirror. "Sometimes, a change of scenery is just what the doctor ordered."
There was a brief pause before Gabriel spoke again, his voice low and contemplative. "Yeah, well, I'm not exactly a stranger to change," he admitted, his words carrying a weight of past experiences. "Lost some people a while back. Ever since then, it's been one upheaval after another."
Thomas's expression softened, sympathy etched in his features. "I'm sorry to hear that," he said sincerely, offering a comforting smile. "Must have been rough."
Gabriel shrugged, a bitter edge creeping into his voice. "You get used to it," he muttered, his gaze drifting back to the window. "Life's a rollercoaster, right? Full of ups and downs."
Thomas nodded in agreement, a sense of camaraderie forming between them. "That it is," he agreed, his grip tightening on the steering wheel. "But hey, at least we're in it together now, right? Partners in crime, so to speak."
A ghost of a smile flickered across Gabriel's face, the first genuine one Thomas had seen since they'd met. "Yeah," he said softly, meeting Thomas's gaze with newfound resolve. "Partners in crime."
As Thomas's radio rang with the urgent call from the station, his heart sank at the news of a missing teenager. Without hesitation, he relayed the information to Gabriel, who sat beside him in the car, their shared sense of duty propelling them into action.
"We need to find her," Thomas declared, his voice firm with determination as he navigated the streets towards the location of the girl's last known whereabouts. "Every second counts."
With a nod of agreement, Gabriel scanned the surroundings, his eyes sharp and alert as they prepared to unravel the mystery of her disappearance.
Arriving at the scene, they found themselves plunged into a whirlwind of frantic activity, as officers combed the area for any sign of the missing girl. Thomas and Gabriel wasted no time in joining the search, their determination driving them forward as they questioned witnesses and pieced together the timeline of events.
