Chapter Four: Washington

Buffy and Wesley woke up the next day. The two of them got ready to leave in the morning. The morning was quiet. Wesley was ready to leave everything behind. As they left the apartment, Wesley took one last look at his L.A home. He shook his head and closed the door. Wesley was leaving that part of him behind. For good.

Wesley escorted Buffy to the bus station. They got on the first bus and traveled all the way to Washington. It was a long ride. Buffy fell asleep on the bus next to Wesley. Wesley nudged her gently when they arrived in Seattle. Rain poured down hard. They did not pack for this weather.

Buffy suggested that they go shopping for the proper attire. They found a couple of shops and bought two umbrellas and two raincoats. Wesley and Buffy went to a hotel and settled in. Wesley pulled out his laptop and found an unread message. He clicked on the message and it said:

782 W. Palm Terrace.

8:30pm.

Come Alone.

Wesley shook his head and closed his laptop. He ignored the message. Buffy turned to him and asked,

"Something wrong?"

"Someone is trying to reach me." Wesley replied. "It doesn't matter anymore. I left L.A. I'm never going back."

"Never?" Buffy repeated.

Wesley nodded. "Never."

Wesley's phone rang and he looked at the caller i.d. Fred was calling him. He let it go to voicemail. He was done with L.A. Wesley sighed heavily and placed his phone on the nightstand. Wesley unpacked his things in the available dresser and Buffy claimed another dresser. It was quiet while they got settled. Wesley sighed heavily and looked at Buffy.

"I need to go out for a few hours. Can you stay here?" Wesley asked and Buffy nodded.

Wesley walked around the neighborhood and found a local demon bar. He stepped inside and ordered a regular beer. He opened his cellphone and played the voicemail from Fred.

"Wesley?" Fred asked. "Wesley, it's me, Fred." She paused. "I just wanted to let you know that Connor is back. He's safe and back."

Wesley's eyes widened. Connor was back? He was sent to a Hell dimension. How in the world was he back? Wesley closed his phone and rolled his eyes. He didn't want to go back to L.A. He was finished with Angel's group.

Wesley ordered another beer and then paid his bill. He finished his drink and walked back to the hotel. Buffy was asleep when he got there. Buffy saw Wesley and immediately woke up. She sat up in bed and said,

"You were gone awhile." She paused. "Is everything okay?"

"I just needed to clear my head." Wesley replied. "Everything alright here?"

Buffy nodded. "Yeah, nothing going on here." She said, "It's pretty quiet."

"Come on, let's go for a walk." Wesley suggested.

Buffy got up and put her shoes on. She grabbed her jacket and headed outside with Wesley. They got familiar with the area. Wesley had never been to Washington before so he wanted to get to know the town.

Plus, Buffy had been cooped up all day so it was a good time to get up and stretch. They went to a local restaurant and got something to eat. Wesley checked in with Elena and let her know that they got to Washington safely. Buffy looked at Wesley and asked,

"Was that Elena?"

Wesley nodded. "She wanted to know when we got to Washington."

"She took this rather well for a parent." Buffy said. "I'm glad we were able to convince her that I'm not her daughter."

"Me too," Wesley agreed. "It would be a hell of a mess if she didn't believe us. I do believe that she wants to be kept in your life though."

"I can understand that." Buffy said and finished her meal. "Ready to go on patrol?"

Wesley nodded and finished his meal. He paid the bill and they went back to the hotel. They grabbed weapons and started a mini patrol in their new area. Once that perimeter was deemed safe, Wesley took Buffy to the bar area that he had found. As they entered the perimeter, a bunch of demons were at the front of the bar.

They had someone in their hands. They swung him twice and then threw him to the ground. The guy moaned in pain and put his head down. Buffy recognized him immediately. Bleach blonde hair, trench coat, black outfit. To her surprise, it was Spike.

"Spike?" Buffy called and the guy looked up, confused.

"You know him?" Wesley asked.

"Yes, of course I know him," Buffy said. "This is Spike."

"Who the hell are you?" Spike asked the two strangers.

Of course, Buffy thought. Spike wasn't going to recognize her in this body. She was Ella Wright to him, not Buffy Summers. Buffy walked in front of him and said,

"You're not going to believe this Spike," Buffy paused. "But it's me, Buffy."

"Funny," Spike said. "You don't look like a self righteous blonde girl." He stood up and brushed himself off. Buffy put her hands on her hips.

"Trust me, it's me." Buffy said.

"It's true Spike," Wesley stepped in. "What are you doing in Washington?"

"I was hoping to gather reinforcements." Spike explained. "Sunnydale is under attack." He paused. "Who the hell are you?"

"Wesley Wyndam-Pryce." Wes said. "I used to be a Watcher."

"What do you mean Sunnydale is under attack?" Buffy interrupted.

"I mean, there is a horde of demons taking over Sunnydale." Spike explained further. "I thought I had friends here, but apparently not."

"Oh God," Buffy thought out loud. "Dawn and the gang, are they okay?"

Spike shook his head. "No, they need help. Now."

Buffy turned to Wesley and said, "I know we just got here, but they need our help. Ready for another road trip?"

Wesley sighed heavily and then nodded. "I'll go back with you."

Buffy turned to Spike and said, "We're in."

"I guess we could use the help." Spike said. "Let's go now."

"Did you drive?" Buffy asked.

Spike nodded. "I parked the car somewhere close by."

"Okay, we need to go to the hotel." Wesley told them.

"Lead the way." Spike said.

Wesley, Buffy, and Spike walked to the hotel. Buffy and Wes packed their things and Spike sat on the bed while he waited. They were ready and they walked to the car. Wesley sat in the back seat and Buffy sat up front with Spike. It was a long drive. Spike turned on some music and looked at Buffy.

"So you're really Buffy Summers huh?" Spike asked.

Buffy nodded. "I somehow got put into another body."

"Hm I wonder how that happened." Spike stated.

"Your guess is as good as mine." Buffy said.

"It had to be a witch with great power." Wesley interrupted.

Buffy and Spike looked at each other and said, "Willow."

"Willow?" Wesley repeated.

Buffy nodded. "I didn't know she could do this though."

"We'll talk about it when we get there." Spike told her. "We'll confront Willow." He paused. "I just don't understand why they didn't tell me about it."

"Perhaps they wanted to keep you in the dark." Wesley suggested.

Spike rolled his eyes. "I can't believe they brought you back and didn't tell me."

Spike was angry. He worked beside them all summer. Spike watched Dawn. He patrolled the graveyards with them. Why didn't the Scoobies tell him about this? He gripped the steering wheel as he drove. Buffy noticed this and remained silent. She could tell he was upset.

For a few hours, the drive was quiet. Spike was still processing that Buffy was back and that the Scoobies kept it a secret from him. Once they got to Sunnydale, Buffy was in shock. The town was in ruins. The demons really did a number on Sunnydale. The town was dirty, on fire, and trashed. People ran in the streets, screaming. Spike drove to the Magic Shop and parked.

There was a magical barrier around the shop. Spike knocked on it and Willow opened a window. Wesley, Spike, and Buffy walked into the Magic Shop. There were books scattered everywhere. The gang was at the circular table that they all usually sat at. Xander was the first to notice.

"Oh great, Wesley," Xander spat. "The useless one is here."

Wesley turned around and Buffy grabbed his arm. She shook her head. "We need you here."

Spike sighed. "They are here to help. So you can drop your comments."

"And who is that?" Anya asked and pointed at Ella.

"This is going to be hard to explain to you guys," Spike said. "But this is Buffy."

"What?" Willow chimed in.

Buffy whirled around. "Yes, it's me."

"That's not possible." Tara said. "Will, is that possible?"

Willow shook her head. "The spell that I had was supposed to bring her back in her own body."

Dawn stepped up and looked at Ella. Buffy remained still while her sister processed everything. Dawn smiled and asked,

"Buffy?"

"It's really me Dawn." Buffy reassured her.

Dawn smiled again and wrapped her arms around her sister. "I don't care what body you came in, you're home!"

Buffy smiled and wrapped her arms around Dawn. "Yes, I came back."

"Okay whoa, this is happening all a little too fast." Xander said and stood up. "Let's all talk about this."
