Chapter One: Hyūga's Savior
Hyūga Minato was the pride of the Hyūga clan. He was the first Hyūga to become the Hokage, the first Hyūga to be the deemed the strongest man in the village. Though he had married outside of his own clan, Minato was and would always be the strongest, most likable, and most appreciated Hyūga to live. However, such a strong man lie in the grave in front of Hyūga Hiashi as he sheds tears of grief. How could this have happened? One moment, Minato was inside of a hospital to look over the birth of his long-awaited son. The next moment, a ginormous nine tailed demon was in the heart of Konoha. A mighty battle it had been between the demon, the third Hokage, and Minato - The Fourth. Now, his brother had been officially put to rest with a hole through the middle of his chest. Hiashi shed yet another tear with a young boy in his arms. Hyūga Naruto. That was the name Minato had given his baby boy before passing on from the land of the living. The infant had jet black hair, three whisker marks on each side of his cheek and the pale white eyes that every Hyūga had. The boy, as if reacting to the death of his father, began crying hysterically, ignoring the cooing of Hiashi. "It's okay, Naruto. It'll all be okay." Hiashi would repeat in a desperate attempt to stop the crying of the tiny boy.
Hiashi felt a tug on the back of his robes and saw his three-year-old nephew looking up at him with wide and curious eyes. This was the child of his younger brother and twin - Hizashi Hyūga. Out of the three siblings that was himself, Hizashi, and Minato, Hizashi was always the one looked down upon. Not only by his family, but by his village as well. Hiashi himself was not weak by any means of any standard and Hizashi was just as strong as he was; yet, because he bears the symbol of the branch family, he was looked down upon as such. As merely a protector of the main branch family. Hiashi hated this and had made it known time and time again that he'd change the ways of his family, of his clan, for the better.
He was going to stand good on his promise, finally convincing Minato to use his power as Hokage to change the Hyūga clan. It was too late now, however. Minato mustered up a smile and directed it towards his nephew, Hyūga Neji. The young boy smiled back, seemingly releasing the tension that'd built in his posture. Behind him walked Hizashi, the splitting image of Hiashi himself, tears streaming down his own face. Wiping said tears, Hizashi looked down at his newborn nephew and grew a small smile of his own. For the first time during the encounter, someone spoke. "Boy, does he look just like his father." Said Hizashi sounding almost startled at the revelation. "The splitting image of our big brother. Maybe he'll be just as sharp as he was, too."
Hizashi said no more, taking Neji but his hand and walking towards his soon to be buried brother. Rain started to fall from the sky in light proportions whilst the sky became darker and darker by the second. Hizashi approached the casket that held his brother. Only his head was clearly seen by the public, hiding the wound that had been in his chest. Minato had long, jet black hair that was silky smooth in texture and straight just like Hizashi's own hair. He had sharp facial features and pale skin. "Uncle Minato's not coming back, is he father?" Asked Neji in what Hizashi assumed to be confusion. "No, Neji, Uncle Minato won't be coming back." He said, his voice breaking in the middle of the sentence. "I see." Said Neji, a sad expression growing on his face. He loved his Uncle Minato. He was fun to play with and to be around. "Go with your mother, Neji. I've got things to speak with Uncle Hiashi with. Be a good boy, now."
"Okay father. I'll see you when you're home." Said little Neji as he ran off to a woman who'd looked like the typical Hyūga woman. Dressed in brown and burgundy robes with long black hair that ran the length of her back. He walked towards his twin brother once more with a hard look of determination marking his visage. "What's with that look, brother?" Asked Hiashi as Hizashi approached him. "We have to do it now, brother. There wouldn't be a better time and if we wait even another year, Neji will be cursed with the seal!"
"But brother, Minato just died. Who's going to back this decision. We can't just kill half the clan and not be deemed traitors at the least."
"We'll call for a meeting with the elders of the village. If we can get them to agree with our decision, we can follow through with the plan."
Hiashi looked down at the peacefully sleeping child in his arms. "And what of the children, Hizashi? We don't have nearly enough shinobi to take on the entirety of the main branch and that's not even considering the fact that everyone that would participate would have a cursed seal mark."
Hizashi sighed, wiping his eyes of the ever falling ran that pitter pattered against the ground. "The children will be saved and so will our clan members. Hiashi, I know you know how to release the caged bird seal. If you release mines, I can take on the responsibility of doing the deed. You know how strong I am. There's not a main branch member that could defeat me besides yourself. So let me take on this burden, Hiashi."
Hiashi contemplated his brother's words before frowning deeply, "And what of Neji and your wife?" Hizashi smiled a bitter smile and looked down at the oh so interesting now muddied ground. "I'm leaving them in your care. Let them grow up to be great ninja and even greeted people. I need you to do this for me, Hiashi."
"Hizashi what will you do when you follow through with the plan? You won't just be able to stay here."
"I know. I'll leave and allow for my name to be tarnished as a traitor. I'll carry this burden alone, Hiashi. I promise that."
Hiashi hardened his gaze at his brother who'd still been smiling, but now it was a smile of acceptance. "Hizashi, you'd better not die. We've lost one, and we can't lose another. We have things to do. So, let's go." Hizashi nodded and fell in step behind his brother who'd be walking towards the Hyūga clan compound.
Upon entrance of the compound, many members greeted Hiashi, bowing deeply in respect and giving their condolences though it was their lost just as it was his. Hiashi more times than not returned the respect and continued to walk with his brother on his tail. Finally, he came across the person he'd been initially looking for. Hyūga Akemi, his beautiful wife. "Hello, my love." She said at his sudden appearance and ran up to him. Hizashi bowed in respect and Akemi frowned at him. "Now you know that's completely unnecessary, Hizashi."
Hizashi scratched his head embarrassedly and responded with, "That's right, I'm sorry Akemi-San." He straightened his posture and watched as Akemi cooed at the appearance of Naruto, pinching his cheeks and yelling shouts of "so cute" and "aww."
"I need you to hold on to him for a while. Hizashi and I have business to take care of with the Hokage. I'm sorry for the sudden leaving but I won't be gone for too long. I'll be back soon!" Said Hiashi in a rushed tone of voice before kissing his wife on the forehead. "Be safe, Hiashi, Hizashi." The twins nodded before leaving with matching strides. "Are you sure about this, Hizashi?"
Hizashi looked at his brother and smiled once more, "Of course, brother."
Sarutobi Hiruzen was devastated at the loss of his successor. He had been Hokage for 20 plus years and now had to take up the mantle once more. Not that he was too old, of course. He was still in his early 40's and had more than enough strength to defend his weakened village. He had, however, retired for a reason. To spend time with his family, to forget the responsibility that came with the Kage title and to finally read his porn books in peace.
"Damn you, Minato, for leaving me once again. I couldn't even attend your funeral." He said before standing up once more to look outside the window. It was raining on such a dreadful day for the village as if the sky itself were crying in turmoil. 3 precise knocks came from the entrance of the Hokage office before a spoke a tired "Come in."
A surprise it was to see the twin brothers that was Hiashi and Hizashi Hyūga, the younger brothers of Minato. "What brings you young men here during such a dreadful time?"
Hiashi and Hizashi looked at each other before nodding. This was it, there was no going back once one of them had spoken the words they both were thinking. Deciding to speak before his mind had changed, Hizashi opened his mouth, words flowing easily enough. "Hokage, there's something that needs to be done and needs to be done soon." Hizashi said.
20 minutes. 20 minutes was the amount of time it took Hizashi to explain the massacre of one of the greatest clans in Konoha second only to the Uchiha and even then, neither proved to be truly greater than the other. "I see." Is all Hiruzen could muster as he stared in bafflement. Hizashi Hyūga wanted to massacre his own clan and wanted it to be deemed as a missing nin. He had said that the Hokage could tell the public that it was overwhelming depression and sorrow that'd made him go AWOL. It was a plan that needed to be discussed with his trusted elders. Thus, 10 minutes of walking and 20 minutes of another explanation later, and the 3 elders of Konoha, the Hokage's personal advisors, stood just as baffled as the Hokage himself.
"Don't you realize how horribly this could affect the village as a whole?" Asked Shimura Danzo, the head of the root division of Anbu. "We're already weakened. Many good Jonin, Anbu, and clan members died in the nine tailed attack and you're asking to murder half of the Hyūga clan?"
"With all due respect, Shimura San, if we risk a civil war within your own village. Then, there'll be more than just half the clan dead. Not only that, but you'll risk other clans joining in the war if not other whole shinobi villages. Though half of the clan will be gone, there are still many warriors inside of the branch family. Many of which are approaching the age of reproduction. Therefore, new Hyūga will be born and good shinobi with the next decade or so. On the contrary, if we allow our clan to fall into a civil war, it'd take multiple generations for the clan to recuperate and that would undoubtedly weaken the village more so than it would otherwise. I'm asking you to put yourselves in our shoes and understand that this is the most logical course of action."
Danzo did truly understand the plight of the Hyūga, however, killing half of them would force his plan of the Uchiha massacre out of the window. He needed the Uchiha to disappear in order to gain the necessary strength to finally achieve his lifelong goal of becoming the leader of Konoha. "Your request is ridicu-"
"His request is logical and worthy of consideration." Spoke Homura, another of the elder council. "I agree. Though the Hyūga clan is irreplaceable, there's no better way to save them to destroy them. And I mean that in no disrespect, Hyūga San."
"No, no, you're right in your statement." Replied Hizashi. The Hokage glanced towards the last member of the council, Koharu. "I agree with Homura San. It's completely reasonable."
"Wait a minute, now. Aren't we forgetting of the Jinchuriki and what clan he resides in? He'll need proper mentors to grow into a capable shinobi." Said Danzo in exasperation that was on the brink of desperation."
"He will be left with my brother, Hiashi." Said Hizashi with no hesitation. "Hiruzen, you must see the foolishness in this boy's request to destroy the Hyūga clan off mere speculation of what could and couldn't happen."
"It's not mere speculation, elder Shimura. It has been spoken of in countless meetings. The destruction of the branch family I mean. They see them as inferior and therefore decide that it's not worth keeping them around. It's not just something we've created and decided to run with. No, a civil war will happen, and it will destroy the entire Hyūga clan if not the very village we all reside in."
"He's right, old friend. We need to listen to these young men before we regret it in the future. This will be an S Rank Mission, Hizashi. To massacre the main branch of your family, to right the wrongs of the Hyūga will rest solely on your shoulders." Hizashi gained a glint of determination and bowed deeply. "Thank you, Hokage Sama. You won't regret this decision."
Hizashi wiped sweat from his face that'd gathered in one of his many intense training sessions. Since the meeting with the Hokage and elders, it had been nearly a month. In preparation for his mission, Hizashi trained in techniques he never thought he'd need. Techniques that included fuinjutsu, ninjutsu, and even some genjutsu. This wouldn't be an easy task but a necessary one all the same. In order to protect the legacy his elder brother had left behind; he'd do as he was told. Because he loved his clan so much, he'd do what was necessary to save them, even if that means saving them from themselves. He made his way from the training ground a little ways away from the village gates to get home. When he was inside of his home, he decided to use a simple Body Flicker to appear outside of the room his wife had been laying inside of. Hizashi walked into the room smiled at the peaceful and beautiful look on her face. "Hello, Mariya Chan."
"Hizashi, you're back!" She said, jumping up to hug him and by way of greeting. "Father, you're home!" Yelled an excited Neji. Suddenly, Hizashi was hit with the weight of his responsibility. Tonight was the night. He'd do for his clan what Minato would have done himself. "I am indeed home, little Neji. I hope you've had a good day with momma!" Hizashi said, his heart pained but his expression light and easy going. "I did! She helped me read again today, father. I like reading!"
"Well, since you like reading so much, let's all read a book together." Said Hizashi whilst smiling down at his wife and son. This would be the last chance he'd be able to do this, and he'd cherish it with every being of his mind, body and soul."
"Let's read this one, father!" Shouted Neji, pulling up a book about a great hero named Tokiro Matsubara. "Alright, Neji, Mariya, shall we all read this book together?"
Mariya smiled up at her husband, the father of her child, and the man she'd fallen in love with over the young years of marriage. "How about I get cookies and green tea to make it even better."
"That'd be nice, Mariya Chan." Replied Hizashi, setting Neji atop his lap and grabbing the book Neji had been holding inside of his hands. "Let's see what we have here." Said Hizashi as his wife appeared with 3 cups of tea and around 10 cookies to share between the three of them. "Tokiro Matsubara had been a great warrior in the land of rice paddies..."
Hizashi looked at his peacefully sleeping baby boy. He'd said what he knew to be his final goodbyes to the toddler and had held his wife in his arms. The bliss of ignorance was nearly a relief for the man. He'd been stressed out about what he was to do just an hour from now. The massacre of half of his clan would no doubt take a toll on him, but he'd do it without fail and with quick precision. "I must go meet with my brother, Mariya. Don't wait up too long for me, though. I wouldn't want bags under your beautiful face." Mariya smiled and blushed simultaneously as she stared back into her husband's deep pale eyes. "Okay, I'll be sure I don't stay up too late. I love you, Hizashi."
"I love you too, Mariya." Said Hizashi before leaving his home for what would be the last time.
"You've come, brother." Said Hiashi with a stern look on his visage. "I have. I hope you've finished the necessary preparations." The two had met in an undisclosed area not known by many of the Hyūga themselves. This is the place where Minato planned to remove Hizashi's burden himself. The removal of the caged bird seal was pertinent to the plans that the 3 brothers developed. Now, this same plan would finally be put into action just with one less brother. Hiashi was still conflicted about the situation. He had just recently lost his eldest brother to a demon that had the sole intention of destroying the village. Now, he'd lose his baby brother who'd protect the very same village Minato died for. Even if that meant he'd have to kill his own clan."
"I have, do not worry. Please sit on your knees prepare for a little pain. Or maybe a lot, I'm not exactly sure."
Hizashi sweat dropped at his brother's honesty. "Just get it over with."
Hiashi went through several hand signs before stopping on the half ram seal, his other arm pointed towards his brother with his fingers touching his forehead. "Caged Bird Seal: Release." He said, chakra glowing dangerously on the tip of his fingers. Hiashi dripped sweat from his forehead in concentration attempting not to hurt his brother through the tedious process of releasing the sealing technique of the Hyūga. Suddenly, Hizashi was hit with a wave of overwhelming pain but forced himself to keep his cries of pain to himself and instead settled for gritting his teeth. After a minute or so, Hiashi's fingers stopped glowing and when he removed them from the forehead of his twin brother, there was no longer a seal that'd cause Hizashi pain.
After gathering his bearings, Hizashi stood up and hugged his brother tightly. "Thank you, Hiashi, for everything. Take care of my family for me. Make sure Neji grows up to be a fine shinobi. Make sure your daughter grows to be a great person just like your wife. I love you, brother. Take care." He said, releasing his crushing hug. "I will, brother." Spoke Hiashi, a few tears streaming down his pale face, "I love you, brother. Now go before it becomes too late." Hizashi looked his brother in his pale eyes once more before throwing on the cloak that'd hide his appearance.
Hizashi approached the entrance to the main branch side of the compound, entering into the building that housed many main branch families. He entered the first apartment-like structure before encountering one of the many elders he'd seen along the compound. "Who are you!" Yelled the elder before Hizashi body flickered behind the old man, sticking two chakra covered fingers straight in the middle of his head. It truly was too late. Now, there was truly no turning back or denying his own insanity. He'd see this through. Seeing the man's wife and children, he followed him his strike with two more to the forehead of both the woman and child. The strikes made the brains of his targets to simply explode within their own head. A truly brutal way to die. He moved onto the next home, killing those within. After doing so, he activated his byakugan to see most of the people in the compound preparing for bed or at the very least, for dinner. He went through a few hand signs before ending on the dragon hand sign. "Art of Genjutsu: Demonic Illusion." He'd said in barely above a whisper. Usually, this simple D rank genjutsu would be useless against most if not all shinobi save those completely talentless in the art of genjutsu. However, against civilians, it'd been like taking candy from a little child. Truth be told, the main house family was filled with half civilians and half shinobi. Therefore, his goal of completely destroying the main branch family was nearly too easy as he exploded the brain of yet another woman who'd eyes had been filled with terror; seemingly from what she witnessed in the terrifying images the genjutsu undoubtedly showed her.
Hizashi began to sweat, climbing further and further into the main branch compound, killing more and more fellow Hyūga. When he began running in the hall towards the next home, he heard approaching footsteps. Though it had been released, the seal on his forehead was still very much visible and because of that, there was no mistaking his identity when he ripped off his cloak to reveal to his clan who it had been to betray them. "Hizashi! How could you do this to your fellow clansmen?" Asked a Hyūga who looked as old as the first man he'd killed. This was who he presumed to be another Hyūga. "You'll die for this!" He said before putting his hands into the half ram seal. The seal that had caused himself and his fellow branch clansmen so much terror and pain. The elder have a vicious smile of glee whilst making the hand sign. That was until he saw that his hand sign did little and less to the man in front of himself. Hizashi smiled at the confusion in the man's eye. He attempted to use his families curse against him and that to Hizashi was unforgiveable. The younger twin body flickered behind the men that'd been facing towards him and went through hand signs that ended on the snake hand sign. "Earth Style: Earth Flow Spears." He yelled out and earth spears as sharp as any sword or kunai protruded from the ground and stabbed through every man standing in front of him.
During the month of time that he'd been training for this day, he spent most of time learning jutsu that'd kill quickly and in large quantities. Quickly moving on, Hizashi continued to slaughter each and every member of the main house whether it be man, child or woman save his brother's family that'd been evacuated before the massacre even began.
It was done. It was finally done. Hizashi stared hips brother who'd been yelling fabricated curses and hate filled words as he ran off towards the Hokage's office. He had done the mission he was assigned and thought about all of the lives he'd taken. All the blood he had shed. All the children who hadn't lived longer than 10 years of age that he had murdered. He cried his final tears before knocking on the door of the Hokage. "Come in." He heard and he did as was told.
"It is done." Hizashi said with an exhausted look upon his seemingly old face. "I am sorry that it had to be like this, Hizashi. However, you did well. You completed you mission within the hour and escaped nearly untouched. Be proud of your prowess as a shinobi."
"Thank you for such kind words, Hokage Sama. It was necessary in order to protect Minato's legacy. I simply did what was going to be done anyway." Said Hizashi with a hard look on his face.
The Hokage smiled a smile of pity and packed his cigar with premium tobacco. He lit the pipe and stuck it in his mouth, taking a long drag of it. "There's one last mission that you'll receive. There has recently been an organization by the name of the Akatsuki. We're not sure what their goal is, however, we know that there are around 3 members. They are accepting strictly S rank shinobi which is why you'll be receiving an S rank bounty on your head. I want you to be a spy for Konoha. I know this is a lot to ask of you, but if you are to truly protect Minato's legacy, show your loyalty for the last time by completing this mission."
Hizashi looked at the Hokage with determination. "It will be done within 4 years' time. I must train to live to my S rank bounty. Then and only then will I infiltrate the Akatsuki. I will take a messenger hawk with me inside of a sealing scroll for when I notify you of my infiltration success."
The Hokage looked up at the Hyūga with an approving gaze. "Thank you, Hizashi. Now, take this headband. It was Minato's and I think if anyone deserves it, it is the one who allowed for his legacy to be continued. Now, be on your way." Said the Hokage as he extended the black hand band Minato had worn so proudly. He grabbed a kunai from a pouch hidden behind his clock and scratched the symbol out of it. "I will be on my way. Goodbye, Hokage Sama." Said Hizashi as he body flickered and appeared atop the village gates. He turned to stare at the image of his eldest brother in silent appreciation. "For you, Minato, I will become the savior of our clan. Goodbye." He said, disappearing into the forest without turning back. It would be a long journey; one he was sure would be exhausting and hard. One that would lead him to walk upon thin ice and yet he couldn't help but be filled to the brim with anticipation for the future.
A/N: Thank you for reading thus far if you've gotten this far. To be honest, I like this story a bit more than I do my other, but I will definitely continue the other one as well. Now before you ask, yes this will replace the Uchiha Massacre. You'll see why in the next chapter as well as some of the results of the replaced massacre.
It was kind of hard writing Hizashi as a character, but he seemed to be the type to do anything for his clan. He died for his brother not because it was his responsibility, but because he knew his brother would be a better leader of the Hyūga. If he'd die for his clan, I could definitely see him making the same, or nearly the same, sacrifice as Itachi. Not to mention his brother is Hyūga Minato, the hero of the Hyūga clan. That's another thing, I feel as if Minato just fits within the dynamics of Hizashi and Hiashi so I put him there. Yes, Naruto still has the nine tails. Last but not least, I DO NOT own Naruto or any of its characters.
Review, favorite, and follow the story and I'll try and update as often as possible. Jsbored, out.
