Chapter 1

The bustling streets of Tokyo faded into a hazy blur as 26-year-old "Mai Taniyama" made her way through the crowded sidewalks. Her heart raced with a mixture of excitement and trepidation as she approached the address scribbled on a crumpled piece of paper. For weeks, rumors had circulated about a haunted building nestled in the heart of the city, drawing the attention of paranormal investigators and thrill-seekers alike. And now, Mai found herself standing before its imposing facade, her curiosity piqued and her senses tingling with anticipation.

Inside the dimly lit interior of the building, Mai's footsteps echoed hollowly against the walls as she made her way through the labyrinthine corridors. She had chosen to make this place her temporary home, renting a small apartment on one of the upper floors. It was a decision born out of necessity, driven by her insatiable thirst for knowledge and her desire to unravel the mysteries that lay hidden within its walls.

Beside her, a small figure clung to her hand, his wide eyes filled with a mixture of fear and curiosity. Hiro, Mai's 5-year-old adopted son, had insisted on accompanying her on this journey into the unknown, his youthful curiosity outweighing any trepidation he may have felt. Despite his tender age, there was a spark of intelligence in his eyes that belied his years, a hint of cleverness that hinted at a mind far beyond his age.

"Mama, why are we here?" Hiro whispered, his voice barely audible above the eerie silence that surrounded them.

Mai squeezed his hand reassuringly, her gaze sweeping over the shadowy interior of the building.

"We're here to investigate, Hiro," she replied, her tone calm but firm. "There are things in this world that most people can't see, things that go bump in the night. It's our job to find out what's causing the disturbances and put a stop to it."

As they ventured further into the building, Mai's senses tingled with the presence of something otherworldly lurking in the shadows. She knew they were not alone, could sense the faint traces of psychic energy that lingered in the air like a haunting melody. But Mai was undeterred, her determination unwavering as she pressed forward into the unknown.

Little did she know, the Shibuya Psychic Research (SPR) team was also investigating the same case, their paths on a collision course with her own. And as the mysteries of the haunted building began to unravel, Mai's journey into the heart of darkness had only just begun.
