Kairi had never been to an amusement park before so was delighted at seeing one appear before her. There were rides, games and food as far as the eye could see and according to the announcer nearby, it was all free! "Oh, wow! A real amusement park! I hope Sora and Riku are here in their versions of this world too!"
"Oh, where is that boy? His father's probably worried sick, out looking for him!" A sudden voice huffed.
Kairi looked down then to see a familiar little bug, Jiminy Cricket. She bent down excitedly since she hadn't seen him since her first journey. "Jiminy! It's so good to see you!"
"Huh? Oh!" He turned in surprise, staring up. "You've heard of me? …Gee, I got promoted to a conscious and now people know my name! What a world!"
"Oh, um, yeah." Kairi smiled, remembering what Yen Sid had told them: this Jiminy was dreamed up by the Sleeping World while her friend Jiminy was safe back in Traverse Town with Pinnochio and his father. "My name's Kairi."
"Well, it's nice to meet you, Kairi, but you ought to run along home now." Jiminy muttered in worry, glancing out at the amusement park. "Pleasure Islands not for young ladies like yourself."
"What do you mean?" Kairi asked in confusion, pouting slightly. She then took a look around and realized there really were no girls here, only boys. "Girls aren't allowed to have fun here? That's not fair."
"Oh, you should be grateful no girls are allowed!" The cricket chirped, hopping onto her hand. "This place is cursed! The boys here are allowed to loaf about and destroy things, giving into their worst impulses! And once they do, they make jakamules out of themselves!"
"This place is… horrible." Kairi softly agreed now that she looked around. Kids drinking and smoking, unaware what it could do to their brains at such tender ages. She didn't know how it was cursed, seeing as seemingly nothing bad had happened to the boys because of their behavior but knew they shouldn't be here either way. She bent down. "You're looking for Pi- er, someone, aren't you? Maybe I could help you find him!"
"Would ya'? Oh, that'd be swell!"
Kairi offered him a seat in her pocket before they looked around and saw a familiar silhouette.
"There he is!" Kairi smiled, running down the steps and into the park.
Just then, Nightmares appeared, blocking her from the boy.
She quickly took them out with Saki's help, sliding along and jumping across the rides to still keep her eyes on Pinocchio. "Pinocchio, wait up!"
The girl dropped down from a fun house before catching up to Pinocchio.
"There you are!" Jiminy exclaimed, popping out of her pocket.
The boy stopped running suddenly before giving a distorted-sounding laugh.
Kairi tensed while Saki suddenly appeared, flying in front of her face. "Saki, I'm in the middle of something!"
She tried brushing her away but her Spirit insisted on staying put before flying over to Pinnochio.
"Saki, stop it!" Kairi gasped, seeing her flutter around the boy.
Pinocchio didn't seem to mind however, giggling like it was some game as he tried to swipe down the spirit.
As he did, Kairi saw a dark blue glow come from the boy's chest and gasped in surprise. She'd seen this glow everytime Saki had fought Nightmares!
She quickly summoned her keyblade.
"Kairi, what're you…?!" Jiminy trailed off, seeing Pinocchio suddenly turn into a giggling ghost Dream Eater. "My stars!"
Before Kairi could put an end to the game, Nightmares surrounded them once more, allowing the imposter to escape.
Jiminy hopped back in her pocket as she quickly took them out.
"Thanks for the warning, Saki." Kairi smiled weakly. "Sorry I didn't listen to you."
Saki made a motion as if to say it was alright before noticing a figure on a nearby tower. She quickly pointed it out.
"You think that's him? Or the imposter?" Jiminy asked skeptically, staring up at the boy.
Kairi shrugged, looking down the tower to find it connected to a nearby roller coaster. "Only one way to find out!"
The girl plopped down on a seat in slight excitement, she'd never been on a rollercoaster before! "I wonder if it goes even faster than the gummi ship?"
"Just make sure to strap in tightly!" Jiminy moaned in worry.
The coaster roared to life, shooting forward.
Kairi laughed in delight as she felt the wind in her hair, holding on tightly as it rose and lurched. "Whoo! This is amazing!"
"Let's not miss our stop!" Jiminy reminded her as they approached the tower
"Right!"
Kairi leapt out onto the tower, landing behind Pinnochio. She let Jiminy hop out onto her hand. "Pinocchio?"
The boy gave an unsettling laugh, causing Kairi and Saki to go into fighting form.
Jiminy hid in her pocket until the danger had passed, the imposter had finally been defeated. He peeked out to see another Pinnochio running into a nearby circus tent and behind him… "Look! They're after Pinnochio!"
Kairi turned to see he was pointing and saw Pinnochio with newly-acquired donkey ears being chased by Nightmares. "Oh no!"
Kairi ran into the tent to find it housed a giant trampoline surrounded by netting.
The Dream Eaters bounced in taunting while Pinnochio clung to one of the nets. He met Kairi's eyes and yelled for help.
"Hold on, I'm coming!" Kairi called, jumping onto a trampoline and trying to avoid the Dream Eaters. She grabbed the net before offering Pinnochio her hand. "Let's go!"
The boy wrapped his arms around her neck, holding on tight as she leapt him to safety.
"Thank you!" Pinnochio sighed in relief.
Jiminy hopped out of her pocket and landed on the boy's shoulder, finally back with his friend. "Are you hurt, Pinnoc'? No splinters or anything, right? Oh, look at your ears!"
"I got a tail too!" Pinnochio exclaimed, making Jiminy look even more worried.
"You two get out of here." Kairi ordered, summoning her keyblade to take on the Nightmares.
Jiminy and Pinnochio did as they were told, fleeing the scene while Kairi took down mischievous Nightmares. She and Saki had some fun performing flips and tricks together as they took out the Nightmares, even swing like trapeze artists when they got high enough to reach the swing that hung near the tightrope.
Once it was all over, she ran off to find Pinnochio and Jiminy, but not before a dark corridor opened in front of her.
Out of it stepped the young man that had been following her and more surprisingly:
"Xemnas!" Kairi gasped in shock, she could feel her own sense of surprise was increased given Naminé probably felt it with her. She gritted her teeth, reminding herself this was the Realm of Sleep, meaning it wasn't unusual for Xemnas to be here. "Go away! You're just a figment of my imagination, you don't have any power here!"
"Don't I?" Xemnas whispered, clenching his hand.
A familiar feeling encased her, the same feeling she'd had trapped in Xemnas' thorns during their final battle. She could even feel Naminé was in slight pain as well. But this was just a dream, it had to be. She shook herself out of the feeling before glaring at the two. "Why are you here?"
"We just wanted to see your progress and to let you know: you're doing so well…" The young man from before answered.
Kairi frowned. How'd they know about the Mark of Mastery Exam, let alone how she was doing on it.
"That hollow puppet you called a friend..." Xemnas suddenly said, catching her attention. "It managed to grow a heart of its very own. Are you surprised, Kairi?"
Does he mean Pinnochio? Kairi wondered, unsure what other puppet he'd be referring to. She shook her head. "Not at all, Xemnas. Because Naminé's shown me anyone can have a heart, including Nobodies like you."
"Oh, how sweet..." Xemnas laughed softly. "You really think Naminé still exists after she gave up her life to complete you? That she has a heart?"
"I… She does!" Kairi insisted angrily, placing a hand to her chest. She could feel Naminé's own anger welling up inside her as she glared at Xemnas. "She left me with a question I need to answer.."
"Yes, the one she'd never let go: If Nobodies have hearts." Xemnas muttered. He turned away before smiling back at her, a dark corridor appearing. "If you want the answer, all you must do is dive deeper into this sleep…"
Dive deeper into sleep…? Is it really that simple? Kairi wondered as the two disappeared.
Kairi stepped out of the circus tent to find Pinnochio and Jiminy weren't there. "Where'd they run off to?"
As if to answer her question, a star shot across the sky before becoming brighter and brighter, to the point Kairi had to block her eyes.
When she looked back, standing before her was a beautiful woman in a sparkling blue dress. "Hello, you must be Kairi."
"Yes, ma'am." Kairi blushed with a small nod, surprised she knew her name. Was this woman a fairy godmother like the one she knew?
"I'm afraid I have grave news." The Blue Fairy announced softly. "Good Geppeto went out looking for Pinnochio and as a result, was swallowed by the whale, Monstero."
"Oh…!" Kairi gasped. She remembered Geppetto's captive situation, of course, but figured she wouldn't see it again as she thought he'd been swallowed in The Realms Between, not here in his world. "Then Pinocchio and Jiminy must have gone after him!"
"That's right." The fairy nodded. "They ran off the moment I told them, determined to find Monstro who rests at the bottom of the sea."
"They could be in big trouble, I have to go after them!" Kairi cried in worry.
Kairi ran to the cape of the island, staring out at the dark, stormy ocean. She was a great swimmer after having grown up on the islands but she'd never had to do it in this kind of weather.
"Wish I had my tail…" Kairi sighed to herself, thinking of Atlantica and how it'd be much easier if an experienced mermaid like Ariel was with her. She then made a fist. "But I have to do it no matter what, my friends need me!"
She dove into the choppy water and swam towards the ocean floor before seeing Pinnochio and Jiminy swim past her. There they are!
Just as she was about to join them, Monstro shot past her, sending her hurtling back.
She regained her balance just in time to see the monster whale swallow Pinocchio and Jiminy in one big gulp.
"Stop! Give my friends back!" Kairi demanded, swimming after it. But Monstro didn't listen, it seemed he was just as scared as Pinnochio and Jiminy had been. What's he so afraid of?
Her question was answered when she saw a giant crab Nightmare swim up and freeze the whale in a giant island of ice. Kairi followed it as it floated up to the surface, determined to face the beast and free her friends.
The nightmare had many propellers including on its back and two that served as claws. Kairi and Saki fought against the wind sent their way till Kairi was able to take a crack at it. The shell was hard as rock, sending painful vibrations through Kairi's body the moment she struck it.
Saki gave a chirp after a quick Heal, motioning to the crab's soft underbelly.
"Good idea, Saki!"
The girl slid under the nightmare but it quickly dodged, making it impossible to hit.
"We're going to need something stronger to break through that shell…" Kairi thought, tapping her foot in thought. This led her to glance down and see Monstro's giant form staring back up at her. "That'll work!"
The Nightmare saw its prey melt the ice a second too late, getting a giant spray of water that cracked its shell.
Kairi leaped up, slamming the crab down in the water where Monstro swallowed it. Alright!
Monstro suddenly let out a huge sneeze, the Nightmare was a bit too spicy for his tastes.
Kairi and Saki were flung out of the water.
Kairi felt a soft something messing with her nose and giggled slightly as she woke. "That tickles!"
Saki stopped tickling her with her leaves now that she was awake, landing in Kairi's hands.
Kairi was about to run right back into the sea when she stopped herself. She'd let her fear for her friends take over the logical reason she shouldn't jump in and save them: this was a dream. It wouldn't matter if she didn't save them because it wasn't even possible. Jiminy and Pinnochio were destined to be swallowed by the whale again after the darkness separated them from Gepetto, this dream was just show what had happened.
"I hope you all make it home once I wake this place up." Kairi said, thinking of her friends that were trapped inside.
The keyhole appeared in the world's moon, causing Kairi to summon her keyblade and unlock the keyhole.
