Jamie pulled up a stool next to Eddie's bed and ran a hand over her cheek.

"I'll have Danny find whoever did this to you. I want them locked up."

He let his eyes rove over all the machine's she was hooked up to. Which was a total of three. Letting his fingers of his right hand rove over the bandage on Eddie's head, he swallowed a lump in his throat, but it stayed. It had been a while. He wondered why she was still unconscious. The wood splinters that were taken from Eddie's head wound were sent off with someone who worked in the NYPD crime lab.

He was hoping they would find out who did this to Eddie and quickly. Sighing, he placed a gentle kiss to her forehead. His eyes found the heart monitor and watched as the lines went up and down, tracking her heart rate. It was steady and strong. She was breathing on her own. That was a good thing. Although Doctor Harrison had given her a green bill of health so to speak, he didn't trust what his gut was telling him. Walking to the end of the bed, Jamie picked up Eddie's chart and began flipping through the pages. The third page alerted him.

"MRI performed. Results pending. Needs comparison with previous MRI."

Flipping the chart closed, Jamie placed it back on the end of the bed and sighed. Reaching for a pair of gloves, he put them on and went back towards Eddie. Leaning over her, he gently leaned her forward and lifted the dressings around her wound.

"Looks like Doctor Harrison did a really good job with your stitches babe. The only thing that concerns me is the blow to the head you took is near where the bullet was lodged 2 years ago."

Placing the gauze back over the stitched-up wound, Jamie leaned her head back against the pillow. His gut was now telling him something else. Pulling his light from his pocket, he turned it on. Pushing back her left eyelid he nodded.

"Ok, you left eye is equal and reactive to light. Let's just check your right one. Hmm. Nothing wrong with your eyes."

Sticking his penlight back into his pocket, Jamie went to the phone by the door and picked it up.

"Yes, Doctor Hastens. Jamie Reagan. I would like you to check on something for me. My wife's pupil responses are equal and reactive. But she hasn't woken up. Could you come and take a look? 5 minutes ok. See you soon."

Hanging up the phone, Jamie went and took his place next to Eddie and squeezed her hand.

"Don't worry Ed, we'll figure out what's going on."

He ran a hand over her cheek again and heard a knock on the door and heard it open. Turning, he saw that it was Danny.

"Hey kid. How's she doin'?"

Jamie looked up at Danny and kept a straight face.

"The ER docs gave her a clean bill of health, but there's something more going on here that I can't quite put my finger on. I called for a neurologist to come down here. She hasn't woken up yet."

Danny put a hand on Jamie's shoulder.

"She'll get through this kid. She's strong. I came to update you on the case. No leads as to the suspects yet, but, we did get the results back from the lab. Those splinters of wood from Eddie's head wound were from a baseball bat. We didn't get any usable prints from it though. There were however prints on your back door that weren't yours or Eddie's. We're running it through the system now."

Jamie nodded and kept stroking Eddie's cheek.

"I wish I'd been home with her. None of this would've happened."

Danny gave Jamie's shoulder a squeeze.

"This isn't your fault kid. It was probably some stupid junkies looking for a fix."

Jamie looked up at Danny with tired eyes.

"There were two sets of prints?"

Danny nodded and was about to say more when Doctor Hastens entered the room. He took that as his queue to leave the room.

"I'll come back later Jamie. I'll give you some privacy."

Jamie nodded and watched his brother go out the door. As it closed Doctor Hastens spoke.

"Jamie. You sounded concerned over the phone. What did you want me to take a look at for you?"

Jamie motioned for Doctor Hastens to follow him over towards Eddie's bed. Taking his penlight out, he repeated the process of checking Eddie's pupil response.

"Both her pupils of her left and right eyes are equal and reactive. But she hasn't woken up yet."

Doctor Hastens took Jamie's penlight and clicked it off. Handing it to him.

"We'll need to run further tests. I'll go see what's taking so long to get those MRI results back. Sit tight."

Jamie put his hands on his knees and rubbed them.

"Can you tell me? In confidence? Is she in a coma?"

The lump returned to Jamie's throat as he waited with bated breath for Doctor Hastens to answer.

"We need to run one more test to be sure."

Jamie wasn't one to wait though.

"She should've been awake at least an hour ago."

Doctor Hastens was about to answer when a nurse came into the room holding a manila folder in her hand. Handing it to Doctor Hastens, he nodded and thanked her.

"Thank you. Ok, let's see what we've got here."

Doctor Hastens turned a light box on by the door and placed the scan against it. Jamie vacated his seat and started looking at the results. He gave Doctor Hastens his opinion.

"This scan is consistent with swelling from a concussion. That's expected when taking a hard blow to the head. Where's her other scan?"

Doctor Hastens removed the current scan and placed the other on the light box.

"This was her original one from a couple of years ago after the bullet was removed from her brain. Significant swelling due to trauma from the bullet. Let's compare these side by side. Damn. I didn't see that before. Her blood vessels are constricted. Could be due to the swelling from the concussion. I'll have Doctor Peterson consult and see what his observations are."

Jamie nodded and watched as Doctor Hastens reached for the phone on the wall.

"Hi Bob, it's Mike. I'd like you to consult with me on a patient's MRI's scan. 5 minutes. Ok. I'll see you soon."

Hanging up the phone Doctor Hastens gave Jamie a confident look.

"He's on his way."

Jamie looked over at Eddie and shook his head.

"I wish I knew what was going on."

Sighing, Jamie squeezed Eddie's hand again and ran a hand over her cheek. Another 5 minutes went by and Doctor Peterson entered the room.

"Jamie. Mike. What do you got?"

Doctor Hastens pointed towards the light box holding both of Eddie's scans. Jamie sat back quietly and watched the other two men examine the scans. Then Doctor Peterson gave his clinical opinion.

"Swelling due to a concussion from a blow to the back of the head. Her blood vessels are constricted. I think it's best if we put her in a medically induced coma for a few days, to help the swelling go down."

Jamie took a moment to digest the information given to him. Nodding, he spoke up so softly, Doctor Peterson had to lean towards Jamie to hear him.

"How long are we talking Bob? 3 days? A week?"

Doctor Peterson looked to Eddie and gave a quiet sigh.

"A week. She got a pretty bad blow to the head. She'll be given nutritional supplements until we bring her out of the coma."

Jamie nodded and shook hands with Doctor Peterson.

"Thanks Bob."

Doctor Peterson could tell Jamie had a question on his lips.

"Yes, we'll make sure she's comfortable."

"Eddie, I'm Doctor Peterson. Can you open your eyes for me?"

It had been a week and Jamie had been on pins and needles everyday count down the hours until Doctor Peterson brought Eddie out of her medically induced coma. Finally, the day was here. He felt like he was holding his breath and watched as Eddie slowly opened her eyes and squinted for a second. Then shutting her eyes. Jamie gave her encouraging words.

"It's ok honey. You can do it. Try again."

Again, Jamie watched as Eddie opened her eyes and she tried to focus on the light in front of her eyes. Doctor Peterson was speaking to her.

"Keep looking at the light Eddie. Good. Do you know where you are?"

Eddie didn't dare move her head. She was trying to get her bearings for a moment.

"The h-hospital?"

Doctor Peterson nodded.

"Good. Do you know who this man is sitting next to your bed?"

Eddie smiled at Jamie, and he squeezed her hand.

"My husband Jamie."

Both Doctor Peterson and Jamie had to strain to hear Eddie speak, it was so soft. Doctor Peterson nodded.

"Good. That's very good Eddie. Now that your awake, we'll get another MRI scan and then something to eat."

Eddie didn't realize her stomach was growling until she felt it rumble. Her eyes lit up. Jamie squeezed her hand.

"I'm so glad you're ok babe. You scared me for a little bit there. Just know I'm here for you. Now and always."
