Disclaimer: I don't own How To Train Your Dragon, and knowing my luck, I probably never will. All rights go to the author of the books, Cressida Cowell, and the company that made the much-loved films and series, Dreamworks. However, I do own Brenna Bloodsword and Starlight the Night Fury, as they are my OCs. This disclaimer will change over time, as I may add more OCs to this story.
A/N: Here's a code I made up for you so this is easier to read.
Bold: Dragons are talking
Italics: Humans are thinking
Bold italics: Dragons are thinking
Underlined: Any language being spoken that isn't either Norse or Dragonese by bilingual/multilingual characters. It will be written like this for humans:
*Language goes here "Insert speech here."
And like this for dragons:
*Language goes here "Insert speech here."
If a dragon and human say the same thing at the same time in the same language (e.g. Brenna and Starlight both speaking Norse/Dragonese), every other word is both bold and underlined. If it's only one word, then it is every other letter.
If there isn't a language in front of the speech, assume that they are speaking Norse if they're human and Dragonese if they're dragons. Sorry about giving such a long A/N, but I felt I had to explain this for you.
Odin and Magni Bloodsword were worried sick. It had been weeks and Brenna had barely written to them; what if that meant something horrible had happened to her and Starlight? Awful scenarios swirled in their heads.
Imprisoned?
Gotten severely ill?
Been stranded on an island without food, water, or a means of communicating?
Gods forbid it, what if they had died?
"She'll write soon, boys," their father, Baldr Bloodsword, promised, although he was clearly just as worried as they were. They could tell from the pacing he was doing.
"I know she wasn't happy here, but did she really have to go so far away?" Magni sobbed.
"Magni, hold it together!" Baldr snapped. "Brenna and Starlight will be fine."
"They've always been persecuted, even here!" Odin wailed. "A lady tried to take her up that awful mountain when she was eight years old! Eight! Years! OLD! We can't just ignore something like that!"
"And we were gone for so long doing business with you!" Magni added. "We should have protected her more! We were terrible older brothers!"
"Don't remind me!" Odin bawled.
"Both of you, shut up!" their father ordered. "There'll be a sign soon. There always is."
In her new home, Brenna was attempting to steal her writing supplies back from Starlight. "Give that back!" she snapped.
"No," Starlight said. "What else could you need to make notes on?"
"This isn't for notes. This is for a letter to Dad," Brenna snapped. "We haven't written in ages. He'll think something happened to us!"
Starlight scoffed. "What could possibly happen to us? A mighty Night Fury and her terrifying witch companion?"
"We've been run out of multiple towns due to said witchcraft and general draconic nature," Brenna reminded her.
"Other than those . . . trivial details," Starlight said, waving a clawed paw in the same dismissive way an apathetic member of royalty would wave their hand. Brenna rolled her eyes.
"You are just so ridiculous," Brenna sighed.
"Thank you!" Starlight threw the writing supplies at Brenna. "You can have these back now, for being so good."
"Finally," Brenna said, continuing on with her letter.
Dear Mom, Dad, Odin and Magni,
Sorry I haven't written to you in such a long time, but that's because so much stuff happened to me and Starlight. We have finally settled down in a small village named Berk, and it is perfect. They have dragons, and one of them is a Night Fury like Starlight. People are accepting of me being a witch and nobody mocks my leg or my hair. By the way, my hair is incredibly long now because it has not been cut since I left.
With all my love,
Brenna Freya Bloodsword and Starlight.
P.S.: The other Night Fury is male, and Starlight is nursing a big crush. Try not to freak out too much about it.
The letter was shoved through the portal that was directed towards the kitchen table of her childhood home. It floated through the portal and slowly landed next to an empty bowl of porridge. Odin was still wailing as he tripped over the table. Yes, the table. The men in Brenna's family became very clumsy when upset.
"Odin!" Magni rushed to his twin brother's aid and spotted the letter. "Brenna sent a letter! SHE SENT A LETTER! THERE'S A LETTER!" They rushed into the kitchen to read through the letter together. "She's living in a village called Berk!" Magni celebrated. Odin smacked him around the head.
"Don't speak too loud, people will hear you. We don't want them knowing where Brenna really is," Odin pointed out.
"Oh, yeah," Magni replied.
My girls are safe, the Bloodsword family patriarch thought.
