"Welcome class!" The teacher, Miss Norris, was surprisingly excited for her personality. "As you know, today is the day you recieve your Pokemon pals."

In front of her stood a large desk with Pokeballs lining it up and down. Miss Norris motioned towards the table.

"As you can see, there is a variety of Pokemon here. I'll call you up by name, and you get to choose which one will accompany you during your field test." She sat down at her desk and picked up the attendance sheet.

She began calling them in alphabetical order. Once Dawn was finally able to come to the front, Sasha gave her an excited thumbs-up. Dawn grabbed the one closest to her.

"Okay...So you're going to be my new partner."

They weren't allowed to release the Pokemons inside the school, but they could see who they got outside when school released. When school was finally over, the field test would begin.

After school, she hid behind the building-where she was sure nobody would bother her-and released the Pokemon. It was a red turtle-like Pokemon, with a small snout and big blue eyes. It smiled at her, revealing two small fangs on the top and bottom of its jaw. The shell had warmth coming from it.

"Zirraa!"

"Oh! You're cute! I'll name you uh...Hm...What name should I give you?" She examined him again. "You're a fire type, and you're a turtle...What about Shelly?"

He nuzzled her leg.

She pat his head. "Aww, I love you too!"

"What are you doing back here?"

"Huh?" She looked up from Shelly.

There was a blond male, around twelve, standing next to her. He wore a purple, sleeveless, overshirt with a white long sleeved shirt under it. The undershirt was clearly too long, as the sleeves were rolled up at the ends. His boots and pants matched in a mauve color. His bangs blocked his left eye, but his right was yellow, and the pupil was purple.

"This is my hiding place. What do you think you're doing here?"

"This is...my school?"

His expression went from anger to shock. "O-oh...I didn't realize you went here." His gaze went to Shelly. "So, you have a Pokemon. That's a newly-discovered species named a Phloglintle. You're lucky you got your hands on one. Move."

"Oh, uh...!" She slid aside a bit and he sat down. "I'm Dawn. What's your name?"

"Why would I tell you? I just met you. Learn to be patient, Dawn."

"S-sorry..."

He held up a Pokeball. "You know how to do a Pokemon battle, right?"

"I know you have to give them commands and things, but I've never done one before."

"Then fight me. Right now. You only have one Pokemon, so I'll only use one of mine." He stood. "You and me, right now."

"Are you sure you should run into things like this?" She stared at the Pokeball. "You're holding it upside down..."

"No I'm not! And if you're going to criticize me, then I guess you'll have to wait for your first battle to be with a wild Pokemon!"

"I'll battle you, yeesh!" She stood. "Alright, Shelly, are you ready for this?"

"Zirraa!"

"Come on out, Jean-Pierre!" He tossed the Pokeball.

Jean-Pierre was a Smeargle, the tip of his tail red. It also wore a red suit, a small white cloth tucked into the collar.

"Smear!"

"Alright, Shelly! Hit them with an ember!"

"Zirra!" He inhaled deeply, then shot a small ball of fire at the Smeargle.

When hit, Jean-Pierre quickly patted the flames out.

"Alright, Jean-Pierre. Return the favor with the Iron Tail you learned."

"Right!" The Pokemon answered.

"Huh? Did that Smeargle just-"

"Zirraa!" Shelly was hit right in the face with the attack, and acted pretty damaged besides the fact it didn't do much.

"Shelly, are you okay there?"

Shelly hopped back to his feet, determined. A few more embers, and Jean-Pierre was beaten.

"Oh no...Looks like I need to train you a bit more, Jean-Pierre..." He picked up the injured Smeargle. "I admit, you're pretty good for a first-timer."

"That was all Shelly. He's a strong little fella!"

"You have a strange bond with your Pokemon. Almost...psychic."

"Can you understand your Smeargle?"

"Jean-Pierre? Not really...He mostly wants to do his own thing. But why do you even care? If you have questions, you should go bother somebody else with them! Like, I don't know, the Professor?"

"Oh! That's actually a good idea! Thank you for the advice."

"Get out of here before I tell an adult you're back here."

"Come on, Shelly! Off to our first adventure together!"

"Zirra!"
