Sue gasped, "A bomb?"
Myles nodded reluctantly. "Please, just take Levi, your evidence and go."
Sue begged to differ, "Myles I can't just leave you here alone!"
Myles went back to the bomb and gently lifted the paper wrapping to see what complex contraption was going to explode in his face. It was definitely a bomb, but for a small bomb, it was complex. Even if he had knowledge of how to defuse bombs, he would have no idea what colored wire he'd need to cut; he had no schematics. He went back to Sue and said, "Please, you have to go. I'll be fine. While you're on your way back, tell everyone you come across to leave the building."
"Myles…"
Myles said more aggressively, "Sue, unless you want Jack and Bobby to break my neck, then you can stay, but you have to go. As they say, 'one man down is better than two.'"
Sue just stared at him. She was adamant on staying.
Myles then assured her in a serious tone of voice, "For real, Sue. I'll be fine. Now, go tell as many as you can to get out of the building."
"O-okay." Reluctantly, Sue took Levi and excited the vicinity.
Then, Bobby's voice arrived through his earpiece, sounding somewhat confident; although it was for Myles' benefit. "Hey Myles, I heard you tell Sue and Levi to get out of there. Good call, mate. Now you get out of there too. Grab your stuff and we'll get a bomb technician down there asap."
Then Myles said, "Bobby, I can't leave."
"Myles, tell me you're joking."
"I'm not joking. I…I cannot leave."
Bobby shouted, "Why?"
Myles continued to look at the bomb before him. "We won't have time for a bomb tech to aid us…or you. There's just not enough time on this clock."
Bobby then asked, "Why? How much time do we have to work with?"
Myles took a deep breath. He exhaled loudly and said, "Less than thirteen minutes."
Suddenly, everyone felt as if they had been punched in the stomach.
Jack muttered, "Thirteen minutes?" Then, "Hey, team! All units here! Let's get civilians out of the building!"
Bobby turned to Jack, "That's enough time, Jack. I can go down there and defuse it. I'm the most qualified out of everyone to do so."
Myles' voice quickly intercepted the channel, "Guys, I don't recommend that. Bobby, it'll take you five to seven minutes alone to get the suit on, five minutes to get down to the basement which you have no blueprints for, so that'll give you less than three minutes to investigate and diffuse it." He sighed, "I think it's best you spend that time getting everyone out of the building before this thing goes off. I'll have to defuse it myself."
Bobby and Jack thought for a moment. As Myles' superiors, they didn't know what to call. If they left Myles alone down there to try and defuse it himself, he would be blown to bits, but if he got out of there, and they didn't do anything, the detonation of the first few floors of the building could cost more civilian lives, and destroy valuable evidence.
Bobby shook his head, "I can't let you do that, Myles. Don't play the hero; it's not worth it."
"Bobby, I can do this…" He took another deep breath to keep himself calm. "But I will need your help. I can send you a picture, and you can lead me through the process."
Bobby and Jack could work with that. "Alright, mate. I'll help you out. Send me a picture."
Without a moment's notice, Myles took out his phone and took a picture of the device. He sent it to Bobby, Jack and Tara. Bobby recognized the device, but before he could say anything, Tara burst from the truck with a roll of paper in hand. She gave it to Bobby, "Here's the schematic. It's an exact match."
After looking at the schematics once, Bobby was ready to aid Myles. "Alright, bud. How much time is on the clock?"
"Nine minutes."
Jack, and the rest of the FBI teams on site hurried as they aided civilians out from the building.
Bobby started, "Okay Myles, the first thing you need to do is remain calm."
"I am calm!"
"Hardly. Just take a couple of deep breaths. Now, just move the packaging out of the way, but whatever you do, don't let that bomb fall out from the trash."
"Wouldn't dream of it," Myles retorted. After controlling his breathing, he did as he was told and was successful. "Alright, now what?"
"Got some wire cutters with you?"
Myles went to the tackle box by his feet, and opened it. There was a side compartment with tools, and he had no trouble finding the wire cutters in the tangled mess of wrenches and tweezers. "Got em."
Bobby looked at the schematics, then back at the picture of the bomb Myles had sent. Tara, at Bobby's shoulder, pointed to the blue wires. Bobby said, "See that cluster of blue wires?"
"The tangled rats nest? Of course."
"There's a yellow wire behind it. It's got red stripes on it too. Just spread open the blue wires so you can reach that yellow wire. Cut it as close to the box as possible. Then, the bomb should be defused."
Myles scoffed, "I-it should?"
Bobby reiterated, "No, no, I mean it will be defused."
Trusting his teammate, Myles did as he was told and cut the yellow wire. He was pleased with himself until he looked at the LED display and saw that both the bomb and the clock were still ticking. "Uhh, Bobby?"
"Yes, Myles."
"So, I cut the wire, but the countdown is still going. Is there another fuse? Are there two access points, or was that just a dummy wire?"
Bobby and Tara looked at each other. They wanted to panic, but refrained from doing so. If they weren't confident, then Myles wouldn't be confident, and he would be blown sky high. "Myles, with one hand, I need you to carefully lift the bomb. Look underneath and tell me what colored wires you see." Tara showed Bobby the schematics again.
Myles said. There's a bunch of blue ones again, and there's a green and red one…how festive."
Tara intercepted, "Myles, focus."
"Tara," Bobby said, "I need Myles to focus on me only. Okay, do you see a yellow wire like the last one?"
"There isn't one, Bobby. Just the little wires and the thick Christmas themed ones. My guess is it's either the red or green one."
"Okay, let me think." He cross referenced the schematics and the picture of the bomb front was right, but the back was all wrong; they missed a blueprint somewhere. He knew the answer, but the pressure was too much. "Which one is it?"
Jack and Sue then met up with Bobby and Tara. Them and the remainder of the teams - along with the local police - were able to get as many out of the building as they could before they took a step back.
Bobby grew frustrated, "Let me think…"
Myles chimed, "That's not very good to hear, Bobby, because it looks like I've got…" he looked at the countdown clock, "...three minutes. I'm going to have to cut something soon."
"No," Bobby said, "For Christ's sake, don't cut anything!"
Jack said, "We got everybody out, Sue and Levi are with us, just get him out of there."
Bobby then said, "Myles, get out of there now."
"What? There's got to be a solution."
"I said get out, Myles. Don't make this difficult on me."
Myles then continued to argue, "Bobby, there are still people in the building."
Jack shouted instead, "Civilians, and the teams are out. Building be damned. Get out of there now! That's an order from Bobby and I!"
Myles shook his head. He knew it would take him at least five minutes to exit the building. He was done for if he ran now. "Bobby, I can do this."
Bobby hadn't yelled so hard in his life, "I said get out!"
At the thirty second mark, Myles took a 50/50 chance at life, and cut the green wire.
"Bomb defused," said Myles over the radio.
Everybody took a deep breath. Sue and Tara hugged each other, whilst Bobby slowly sat on the pavement. Jack was hunched over, feeling as if he were going to throw up and then faint. On the ground, Bobby was taking shallow breaths; he was beginning to get riled up. He said to Jack, "Did he just cut a wire, Jack? He blatantly disregarded our orders, and took a chance at his own life. Y'know, I know he's an idiot sometimes, but this…this is something else."
Jack said, "Okay, just calm down…"
"No, I won't calm down, Jack! Myles could have died just now."
Jack understood; he would deal with Myles later. When he was feeling better, Jack stood up straight and saw Sue looking at him, concerned. "Are you alright," she started.
A little tense, Jack answered, "Not really." He took his earpiece off. "It was just Myles being an idiot and giving me another heart attack."
Sue asked, "So is Myles okay? Should someone check up on him? It must've been stressful down there for him."
Good idea; he never did ask Myles how he was fairing after such an ordeal. After placing his earpiece back in its original position, he said to Myles, "Hey Myles are you alright?"
"Yeah, I'm good. I'm gathering some evidence to take back to the lab. I couldn't find any drugs, but I'm sure some of this science equipment will have residue of some sort on it. I'll be up there in ten minutes."
Jack shrugged. He said to Sue, "He says he's good."
Sue then went to Bobby. She asked if he was okay, but she could tell by his responses that he was fuming. He was angry at Myles, and he didn't want to hear or see that guy for the remainder of the week. Bobby ripped off his earpiece and threw it over his shoulder. "Sue, we could have lost a teammate today, so I'm not okay. I just…really need to be left alone right now."
Jack then grabbed her arm and pulled her away with him. He was going to give her a job to do while Bobby and Jack figured out what they were going to do with their troubled teammate.
