AN: Two more chapters after this one! And then I'll be doing another Sue Thomas story that'll proceed this storyline. This chapter is what the new story will play off of. Thanks for reading! Enjoy this chapter.
Monday 11:00 am…
In the filing room on the first floor, Myles was continuing project 'blue folders,' in which he had to gather intelligence for small cases, then have them distributed to specific units throughout the building. He had a keen eye for finding things that others would gloss over, but project 'blue folders' was just a job that kept him busy while he was on desk duty.
Fortunately, Myles was now cleared by his doctor to work in the field, but before he could continue with his fentanyl case by interrogating members of lys rouge, he had to finish with these files and have them mailed to the other departments by the end of the day. He only had three folders left, but he was barely functioning.
Ever since Myles had been discharged from the hospital after his overdose, he hadn't been sleeping well, and the consequences of that were finally catching up to him. He'd been having terrible night terrors that consisted of him either getting shot, getting drugged, shooting someone else, or watching others get killed. No matter what the situation, his nightmares always ended in death. He had nightmares often in the last five years, but they seemed to be getting more frequent, more detailed, and more real. And if that weren't enough to think about, he couldn't stop worrying about the current well-being of his work friends.
Earlier, before Myles had a chance to start working, Garrett had pulled him into his office, and explained everything that had occurred at the warehouse on Sunday night; everything from the fire, to the van running over emergency crews. There were serious injuries, but no reported casualties, and luckily, Myles' squad were relatively unharmed. However, he told Myles that his team wasn't expected to come into work today….and that worried him. They'd gotten injured, but the severity of their 'minor' injuries were unbeknownst to him, because Garrett was being too vague for Myles' taste. When he finally left Garrett's office, he'd sent out text messages to Jack, Sue and Bobby, hoping that at least one of them would answer and give him a breakdown of everyone's situation to relieve his heart and mind. No one answered him yet.
Myles tried concentrating on his work, but again, his friends entered his thoughts. They still weren't answering his texts, but that's maybe because they were still recovering from the events of yesterday, and wanted nothing to do with work. They watched people burn, get shot, and get run over by a van, so of course they would take a personal day, and milk it for all its worth.
Then, his eyelids started to droop, and he could feel himself falling asleep like a toddler on a full stomach. He couldn't sleep now of all times! He needed to finish project 'blue folders.' He couldn't rest until his friends replied to his text messages. What if something serious happened, and his friends were trying to get a hold of him? Unfortunately, it was all in vain. After fighting sleep for another two minutes, Myles finally lowered his head onto the table in front of him, and drifted off into a (much needed) deep slumber.
Fifteen minutes later, Bobby (with his jacket on) rolled into the filing room. He had some stitches on his forehead, and both of his hands were bandaged. His shoulder still ached, but luckily, the ache was going to be from a bruise rather than a dislocation.
Ten minutes ago, Garrett informed Bobby that Myles was working in this area, so he thought he'd surprise his co-worker with his presence and some coffee…obviously, the man was in dire need of it. Presently, Myles was sound asleep at 11:30am. Had Myles not slept at all since they went to Wilmington? Bobby quickly scanned the table, and noticed piles of paper strewn across the desk and floor. There was a lot to go through, but at least he was down to three folders instead of thirty.
While Bobby removed his suit jacket, he placed a hand on Myles' back to make sure that the man was still breathing. He'd been on edge with his co-worker ever since Myles accidentally overdosed. Every time Bobby found Myles asleep anywhere, he had to check if he was breathing or not. It would take some time for the scare factor to leave Bobby, but for now, it was better to probe than not to. He wouldn't tell Myles though.
Satisfied that his friend was still alive and well, Bobby proceeded to place his jacket over Myles' shoulders before grabbing a blue folder at the bottom of the pile, and making himself comfortable in a chair. He opened the folder, and started reading.
Then, Lucy knocked on the filing room door before entering with a glass of water and some tablets in hand. She saw Bobby sitting at the giant table, shuffling through some loose papers; it looked like he was helping Myles with his endless stack of folders. Lucy said with a surprised tone in her voice, "Oh - Bobby! You're here. Garrett told us that none of you were planning to come in today."
Bobby raised a brow, "Oh really? Well, he may be right with Sue, Jack and D', but for me, I've got some stuff to catch up on."
Lucy said, "Myles and I were told what happened out in Wilmington. How're you feeling? Judging that you're here, I know you're alive."
Bobby replied with a reassuring smile. "My shoulder is sore, and I've got some cuts on my hands and face, but I'm alright. No doubt Tara will be taking a couple of days off since she has a broken hand, and Jack and Sue might come in this afternoon…hard to say. Dimitrius also took holidays for the remainder of the week to have some fun with his family. I came in because I was bored and wanted to." He gawked at the tablets in Lucy's left hand; it was probably Tylenol. He asked, "Are those for me?"
Lucy joked, "Do you want them to be? They're supposed to be for sleeping beauty over here." Then, she placed the glass of water and tablets by Myles' sleeping figure. After, she crossed her arms and continued, "While you guys were on the road, Sue and Jack asked nicely for me to check up on Myles every now and then while he was here on the weekend living next to that stupid phone. He was more irritable and sassy than usual. Then, he let it slip that he wasn't sleeping."
Bobby looked back at Myles who was fast asleep and unmoving; even while they were talking at a normal volume, he didn't stir. He looked peaceful though. He should check if he was breathing again. "And the Tylenol?"
Lucy rolled her eyes, then sighed, "Myles started having migraines. He's been having them since Sunday afternoon. They got worse this morning when Garrett told him exactly what happened at that warehouse. This is to relieve that migraine. It's good to see that he's asleep now, but as a warning, he might be a little cantankerous when he wakes up. Anyway, I've got to get back to work. I'll check up on you both later."
Bobby watched Myles as Lucy left the room. The poor guy was exhausted. He looked more exhausted than himself, and he had been running away from bullets, building fires and moving vans.
At 12:30pm, Sue came into the filing room, and saw Bobby reading through folders and secluded papers, and Myles asleep at the table. At this point, Myles had moved his head a little bit, but was still in a hunched-over position; his back would be killing him later. Sue had lunch in her hands for everyone, and boy did it smell good! "Hey Sue," Bobby started as soon as he saw her walk in.
Sue took a quick glance at Myles before approaching Bobby with four hamburgers from a burger joint down the street. She even bought them drinks. "These are for both you and Myles."
Bobby stopped what he was doing and said, "Ah - thank you. I didn't think you would be coming into the office today."
Sue shrugged. "We have members of lys rouge in custody. I thought I'd see if Myles was up to any interrogations today, but judging by what he's doing now, I think it's best I ask tomorrow. Wow…it looks like he's almost done with those folders."
Bobby replied, "Yep. I'm helping him out with the rest though. According to Lucy, he told her that he hasn't been sleeping well, and he's been having a lot of migraines and nightmares. I think it's best that he can get all the rest he can at whatever chance he can get…even if it's during working hours."
Sue looked at Myles with sad eyes. She accidentally said aloud, "It's getting worse, huh?"
Bobby raised two brows at that statement. He asked, shocked, "What did you say?"
Realizing her mistake, Sue said, "N-nothing. I-I said nothing."
But Bobby wouldn't let it go. "Nu-uh, you said 'it's getting worse.' What's getting worse?"
Panicking, Sue left the room, but Bobby was quick to follow her into the hallway. She hurried to the elevators as fast she could, but Bobby ran in front of her, and stopped her. He said more sternly, "What's getting worse, Sue? Is there something you know?"
Sue shook her head. "It's not my place, Bobby. I made a promise. I've kept it for a very long time, and it's going to stay that way." She brushed past him.
Bobby watched her and Levi proceed to the elevator. Maybe, before he approached Myles about his nightmares and migraines, he would talk to a few more people to see if they knew anything he didn't. They were a team, a family. They couldn't be keeping secrets from each other…could they? To be fair, only Jack knew about Bobby's gambling problem, so was it really his place to talk about not keeping secrets? Still, if there was something Myles was hiding, why would he tell Sue of all people? Bobby decided that he would approach Lucy first. She and Sue were good friends. Surely, Lucy would know the recent drama that's been happening around the office?
After lunch, Bobby stopped by Lucy's office space. He placed his hands on her desk, and bent over her laptop to get her attention. He said quietly, "Lucy."
Lucy looked up and raised a brow. "What can I do for you, Mr. Manning?"
"Is something going on with Myles that I don't know about?"
Lucy shrugged. "I don't know. Myles hasn't said anything to me. He's a pretty private guy, and even if he did have something to say, I'm the last person he'd be sharing anything sensitive with. Why?"
Bobby exhaled, then explained, "Well, Sue came down to bring me and Myles some lunch. I mentioned his nightmares and headaches, and she said, 'It's getting worse.' So…what's getting worse? I asked Sue what she meant, but she immediately brushed off what I asked, and said that it's not her place to tell."
Lucy replied, "This is the first time I'm hearing this. Maybe I'll ask her."
"Please," Bobby said, "I'm getting a little worried about my teammates here." He then added, "After Myles wakes up, and it's time to go home, I'll be taking him out for dinner, just to get him a change of atmosphere. Who knows…maybe he'll mention something to me."
Sue was at Jack's place tonight, so Lucy decided to pay both her and Jack a visit. Jack's nose was bandaged, and he had a temporary voice change due to his nose being covered, but the doctor said his broken nose would heal nicely. While Jack was busy watching TV in the living room, Lucy decided to pull Sue aside for some late night tea, and she started her investigation.
Lucy said as she grabbed the tea Sue had just poured, "It's good to hear that everyone is going to make a full recovery. It's too bad that Alexandre and Alain couldn't be apprehended."
Sue replied, "They were too far gone." She then poured herself a mug of tea, and reached for the honey.
Lucy said, "But it's good that all of those firefighters are going to pull through too. No casualties."
Sue agreed. "Yes, but some were more critical than others. There's no doubt in my mind that some of them will be in hospital and physiotherapy for a very long time. Their life and career was ruined by some idiot. I just wish we would've seen that van coming towards them sooner. I mean, they were just doing their jobs."
Lucy took a sip of her tea before changing the subject, "How's Tara, and her hand? I didn't have a chance to text her."
Sue replied, "There are fractures, but it's nothing that a few splints and rest can't take care of."
Lucy then questioned, "How're you doing, love? That must've been scary for you."
Sue took a quick sip of her tea, then proceeded to stir more honey in. She responded, "Yeah, it was…but…I know that everyone is going to be okay, so I can rest easy."
Then, there was an awkward silence between them. Sue then asked Lucy a question, "How're you doing?"
Lucy answered, "As good as I can get on a Monday. I can't wait to have you back full time, because Myles is driving me absolutely crazy."
Sue smiled. "Thank you for coming in on the weekend to check in on Myles. I know he can be difficult."
Lucy lightly chuckled. "He was fine, but he was just…grumpier than usual."
Sue gave a small smile. "Yes, the case was stressful for everyone involved, including Myles. I bet he was just itching to join us at the warehouse…and cursing the doctor's note that chained him to his desk." She then lost her smile. "It's just…after everything that happened during and after the accidental overdose, Jack and I just wanted to make sure he was alright."
Lucy said, "Sue, Myles accidentally admitted to me that he was having sleepless nights and nightmares. And he was acting strange…like…a different kind of strange. Do you know if there's something going on with Myles? I mean, if anyone would know, it would probably be you. Him and I make snide remarks at one another. You and him…well…whenever he comes over to talk to you only, you seem to have deep, meaningful conversations…so…do you know anything?"
Sue paused, and thought hard. Right then and there, she wanted to spill her guts and tell Lucy everything that was wrong with Myles; starting from his first major panic attack at work five years ago, but she promised him long ago that she wouldn't tell a soul. She kept Myles' secrets this long, what's the point of breaking them now? Even if she did say something, how could she explain it? How could she explain five years worth of PTSD episodes without getting lectured? How could she explain that whenever Myles and her unexpectedly journeyed somewhere in the bureau together, it was to help him through another panic attack? How could she explain that he admitted to having memory problems, and hated being in the dark because he relieved being shot and shooting people in that type of environment? How could she explain that six months ago, Myles had texted her half an hour after work just outside of the office building in a state of hysteria, because he couldn't remember where he was, and how to get home? Sure, the psychiatrist was helping, but Myles was stubborn and refused to take any medication that was prescribed to him. And now, she just found out that his PTSD was getting worse. She couldn't tell her best friend. If she said anything without Myles' knowledge and he found out, their friendship would instantly fall to pieces; and on top of that, he was keeping a lot of her secrets too. She couldn't risk that. They started as adversaries, and she didn't want it to end that way.
Sue replied, "Not really."
Lucy shook her head. Sue was a terrible liar. "Well…Bobby came to me this afternoon and begged to differ. You know something we don't."
Sue frowned.
Lucy continued, "If you know something, it's okay to tell me. I won't tell a soul, I promise."
Sue bit her bottom lip. As much as she wanted to tell someone about Myles' condition, she just couldn't. "I'm sorry, Lucy. I can't."
Lucy scoffed, "What do you mean you can't?"
"I don't know," Sue reiterated, "I just can't."
Lucy started to get frustrated. She said, "Sue, it's me. You can trust me. I promise I won't say anything to anybody else, including Bobby. I mean, we are a team, we can't keep secrets…"
"Lucy!" Sue exclaimed. She then explained herself in a stern manner to get her point across. "I said that I can't. If I say anything to you, the team, or the bureau, I will not only get lectured, but also lose my friendship with Myles. Our friendship might be unconventional, but it took me three years to build it to where it is today. As he says, our friendship is full of admiration, and respect for each other, and who we are as people. Yes, we are polar opposites, and we don't always get along, but we found a way to connect."
"Sue…"
Sue continued, "I am not going to lose that connection I worked so hard to shape. Plus, this is something that's personal to Myles. If you have a concern about his well being, just ask him. And if you do and he wants to keep any issues he has to himself, just respect it and move on."
Lucy was taken aback by Sue's answer. Maybe she had been around Myles too much during this case, and his snippy personality was starting to rub off on her. "That's strange, because you're NOT the type of person to easily give up on your friends."
"Believe me, Lucy, I haven't. And that's all I'll say. That's enough talk about Myles. Let's talk about us." Sue drank some more of her tea; it was now perfect, but it didn't soothe her at all. She knew that she'd have to talk to Myles tomorrow, and mention that everybody in the office is getting suspicious and worried of his recent behavior. Maybe she could convince him to finally come clean about what was really going on with him.
Lucy acknowledged Sue's words, and she immediately changed the subject to something about the county fair. Meanwhile, Jack, still in the living room La-Z-Boy chair, had eavesdropped on the two women's conversation. Was something going on with Myles that he wasn't aware of? Well, he'd have to keep a close eye on Sue and Myles tomorrow while they interrogated members of lys rouge.
