How did this happen?

How did he fall in love so quickly, completely out of the blue like that?

Why was life so weird?

Noah had never even paid much attention to Cody before the day they sat in the bleachers together. Did that hug jolt something in his brain? No, of course not. That was something straight out of the cheesiest romance movie imaginable.

But all Noah knew was that, after the hug, he started to pay more attention to Cody. Especially when they were seated next to each other in class.

Cody certainly picked up on it, even if he didn't know why, because he grew to be even more chatty with him. Bringing up video games, crappy low-budget action movies, some stupid thing those surfer dudes did the other day. Noah let it all drift into his head and burrow itself into his brain.

He remembered Cody's favourite ice cream flavours, favourite songs and his favourite colour. He remembered Cody telling him about the glow-in-the-dark stars on his ceiling, the time a tree fell and crushed their fence during a windstorm, and his ant allergy. Cody was never nervous sharing details like that with him. He always smiled and laughed, sometimes at himself.

Noah wasn't sure why he never approached him to ask if he wanted to hang out. Cody probably would have really liked that.

He would have liked that, too.

But was it too late now? Were those anonymous letters going to ruin everything between them?
