Chase felt his whole body shake and ache, everything from his paws to his bones felt like they were going to shatter, each limb stung with pain. His eyelids ached in pain as well as he tried to separate them, it felt like they were burning. He tried to lift his head, but that was in pain too. It felt like his head was snap off by weight his was trying to push up. "Chase…. Chase, Wake up, Chase please" Chase heard his voice being called out softly, like It was an angel trying to bring him back to the light. The voice, however, was masculine however in this case, bringing the courage and will to open his eyes seeing the outline of a dog as big as him for a moment. Letting the light adjust to his eyes to see it was Rocky. "Rocky…Where…What happened?" Chase asked.
"It was a pretty nasty fall" Rubble said, coming into the conversation, pointing his head right up above. Chase looked up to see the ledge he had tried to hold on to but fell from. I must have been a good 60 feet up landing onto solid rock ground.
"At least we're alive and breathing though, can't focus on the negatives all the time. So…. Plan?" Chase asked the mixed breed, who shrugged in response. "Sorry bud, I'm still stuck on that, I was looking around earlier and there's no way out of this place" Rocky stated as he employed Chase to have a look around himself as he did. The German Shepherd saw many dogs, some strong some weak, some young some old, some big and some strong, some with high hopes and some that had already accepted their fate.
Many different breeds were just laying around, he could see some of the dogs were starving, their rib cages were visible on their side. Hungry for any type of meat, any kind. "Stick together, you're going to need it" One dog said, walking up to the three. His voice was graveled and strong, like he was in charge. He was tall and fluffy, but also dirty. To be fair, there were no baths down where they were, so its not like he could have changed that. It was a Bernese Mountain Dog, the one from before.
"Hey, you're the dog from before" Rocky claimed.
"Yes, I'm Brax, and welcome to your new homes forever" He said sternly, not in a way as if he ordered, more like an acceptance of defeat, knowing it was his home forever too whether he liked it or not. "Woah Woah Woah, Not a chance, We've got friends and we're not going to leave them behind. We're breaking out of here" Rocky said with determination.
Brax eyed the mixed breed, taking his words of determination as if it were some half-baked jokes. Brax huffed before turning around. "Let me know how that goes down, in the meantime, don't cause any trouble". He said, his tail waving back and forth as he walked away. "Oh no you don't!" Rocky said, chasing after the Mountain dog, eager for more answers. "You seem wise and full of knowledge, tell us everything you know about this place, and maybe we can have a really good chance of getting out of here" He said, pulling ahead right in front of Brax, making him stop in his tracks.
Brax huffed as if he were annoyed, towering over the mixed breed, he could easily continue walking and bounce the mixed breed out of his way, instead however, he saw down right on the spot. "Might as well, I could use the talking and company before you three die here anyways"
"Wait, before we what?" Chase asked, asking for a repeat on the last few words he spoke.
"This is the Concrete Kennel, and when you go in, you don't get out. They'll work you till the bone and when you have nothing more to give…" Brax emphasized, leaning in further to Rocky, Chase, and Rubble. His hot breathes blasting onto them. "They'll take you away."
"T-To where?"
"No one knows, First you scream and then you're never seen again" He said, lifting his head back up. "Hold on, How do you know so much, You came us with in the truck…. Unless, you must have…." Rocky slowly came to realization before Brax confirmed it for it.
"That's right, I escaped once, But don't get it confused little doggie, That's exception doesn't make the rule. I got out because of luck, that won't happen again" He said firmly, hoping his words would ring in their heads, but that didn't stop Rocky. He knew this place wasn't Fort Knox, there always a way out whether it be by Luck or Strategy.
"Alright, I can get to thinking of a plan, but if this is a prison. Theres gotta be some sort of schedule the cats keep us on. When to eat, when to sleep, when to work, you know?" Rocky brainstormed, he made a good point. "You're right, but we just got here though, we'll have to see" Rumble added.
"You make it sound like it's a hotel, The cats treat the rats that chew on the wires upstairs better than the dogs down here. Anything we have to eat is little to nothing. Any time we have to sleep, you'll be lucky to get an hour in. And the work…. It'll leave you soaring in every place and bleeding in every other" Brax said, Rocky gulped as he knew this wasn't going to be the experience he was hoping to look by. "W-Well, either way. Can you help us do it?" Chase asked toward the Mountain Dog. Anyone with a glimmer of hope would say yes to even the slightest possibility of freedom, but Brax was unsure, maybe even unwilling when he stared back at them.
"I'll help, but only on one condition" He said.
"Yes, Anything" Rocky replied, eager to have the giant dog on his side.
"You'll find out later, just keep your word" He said, the classic 'Help me later' scenario of helping. Rocky didn't dwell on it and none of them had the heart to double cross anyone, especially the Brax who would go paw to paw with Chase anytime. Just as it happened, A loud beep rang out, it was electronic is sounded like it belonged in a factory. As well as the beeps, At the very back of the room with no manmade floor and no manmade walls was a built-in light that flashed order periodically. Its orange light spun slowly inside the glass, right beside it was a large metal door with black and yellow stripes around the edges. "They're back…" Brax said, adding nothing more as the door opened.
In came many dogs, even more hungry and thirsty than the ones in the room already. They had patches of fur that were black like coal and tar, certainly weren't born with that. Their tongues hung out of their mouths, gasping for water, their legs shook and quivered with every light step they took in a neat orderly line. "Hungry…. Water….Need…Water….Sleep…Cant….Work" One said, his voice was horsed from all the work and no benefit. It must have been nineteen dogs that came out, the last few to come out were cats, deputies armed with their shotguns, painted orange. Not meant to kill, but to cause pain.
"Alright, The other twenty mutts, make a line, Time for some work!" One Deputy said, racking his shotgun. None protested and all complied, slowly making a long single file line in front of the metal door, even Brax did. Rocky, Chase, and Rumble all looked at each other, they had to be sheep and follow the crowd if they wanted to really know what life was like in the 'Concrete Kennel'.
Suddenly, two more deputies came walking out the door. One with a large bag of kibble and the other dragging a large tub of liquid, presumably water. The first nineteen dogs that came out salivated over the kibble and water they were about to receive. "Come and get it!" The cat with the bag of kibble said before throwing it onto the ground, the other cat with the large tub of water dragging it over in the same area. Within an instant, All the dogs that came out the door just a minute ago, jumped and lunged over to the kibble.
Knocking each other over trying to get the first bite, it was savage. As one dog knocked over the bag of kibble, Rocky and the other dogs could see it wasn't even a full bag, It was only a fifth full. Barely enough to keep feeding even 10 dogs. As for the water, the tub was the same, couldn't even quench the thirst of just some of the dogs. These dogs had a right to fight over every scrap they saw, it was first come first serve, and if you can't get anything, you die hungry.
"Wait, hold on, The number of dogs, shouldn't it be even?" Rocky asked.
"What do you mean?"
"There were only nineteen dogs that came out, I counted, and there's twenty of us" Rocky explained, getting the attention of Brax. "Good eye, You're right, Theres one more you should know about" Brax said as he pointed toward the crowed of savage dogs biting at the kibble. At first the three dogs didn't see what he was pointing at, before they saw him.
It was a cat, It was unbelievable, A cat sitting a good distance from the dogs chowing down on a piece of fish bone with some meat still stuck to it. "A cat?!" All three said. "B-But that doesn't make any sense, I thought the Concrete Kennel was dogs only" Rubble asked.
"It is, but that cat…. Hes something else. No one knows how he got sent here or who he is or even what he did, but it's best not to worry about it. He sticks out of everyone business, so I employ you three to do the same with him" Brax said.
"Alright, move up!" One of the cats said, making the single file line move on it into the door. The line started to move, everyone else became sheep and just followed along. They all knew what was coming, hard labour, and nobody was looking forward to it.
Lou sat in a small chair, his legs crossed over one another as he slouches back. One arm hung low not a care in the world while his other hand was faced up, holding a small bowl of grapes for him to enjoy as he stared down Ryder who was still sitting in the cell staring back at him. Both of them didn't say anything, Ryder knew what Lou wanted, his demands from their last coulourful exchanged hadn't changed one bit. In the middle of the cell was the same document and black ink pen, hungry for a signature from the Paw Patrol, giving Lou the Lookout. It was silent as even the cat guards by his attention stood silent, as well as the cat inmates in the nearby cells. The only sound came from each time Lou would crunch a grape with his teeth. "I can wait all day, you know" Lou stated.
"Like wise" Ryder replied coldly, he was fully ready to play Lou's slow game suffering. Ryder thought those would be some good grapes to eat, he hadn't had a decent meal in quite some time. Of course, he was fed at the very least, but the food wasn't as good. Nothing but Tuna sandwiches, flavoured water and maybe some eggs. Lou repeatedly dug around in his small bowl for more grapes, staring down at a few before looking back up at Ryder. "Want some?" He asked. Ryder didn't response, He knew just even talking with Lou entertained him even just a little, best not to buy into it.
"Can I have it?" The white cat from the cell behind Lou asked, Jello the former judge asked, his paws pressed up against the bars for even just a good sniff of nature's juicy popcorn. "Shut up" Lou coldly responded.
"Ryder, I'm trying to be courteous with you, You seem to forget Rocky, Chase, and Rubble. Their…. not in the best circumstances right now, but don't tempt me. They could be six under, but I'm not the kind of person"
"Oh yeah, and Marshall?"
"You saw what I did, He was lucky to get hit in the paw, but make no mistake. If that mangy black and white mongrel tries to put a hole in my plan, I'll put another hole through him" He threatened. Ryder could have flipped out and threatened him back, warning him not to harm one of his friends again, but he remained silent. Raising his voice, let alone raising it would yet again only make his day. "Lou, A Moment" A voice asked, Lou turned his head to see the Sheriff in his classic attire. He looked agitated and pissed but contained nevertheless.
Lou sighed, getting up from his chair as he walked over. "Coming Uncle Reno" He said as he walked over to the feline. Ryder perked up his head for a second in a bit of surprise, calling the cat his 'Uncle'. Ryder snickered at the developing thought in his head, getting a one finger salute from Lou as he walked by. "Whats going on?" Lou asked right to the Sheriff.
"You tell me" He replied, handing over small photos to the human. Lou examined the photos more, looking at them to see pictures of destroyed patrol cars and three figures hidden in the bushes near the Impound lot. "Wh-What's-"Lou was about to ask before the Sheriff cleared it up for him.
"A few hours ago, two dogs broke into the Impound lot last night and stole that big paw patrol vehicle you asked me to impound and search, one dog was a cockapoo, and the other was a brown labrador."
"Skye and Zuma, damn it" Lou muttered under his breathe.
"Listen Lou, You're the one who said you had this under control, This whole thing of roping in Paw Patrol was your idea. The last thing I need is my deputies getting hurt, property broken into, and making your father more pissed than he already is. Am I clear on this?"
"Y-Yes Uncle Reno"
"Good, Tomorrow at the meeting with your Father, You're going to explain to him all the details. Its not a total loss though, one of my undercover informants hidden in the camp down by the river told me that's where the dogs are"
"Undercover?"
"That's right, She'll be able to give us more and more details on everything they do. I'll fill you in on everything she says, but for now,.. Keep...It…Under...Control" Reno said, huffing one last breathe as he looked up into Lou's eyes. Lou was much bigger than his obviously, but Reno's authority alone towered over Lou by all means.
"Yes Uncle Reno" Lou said as Reno turned tail slowly and walked away, going back to tend to his duties as Sheriff.
"This Land is Your Land, This Land is my Land, This Land…..was made for you and meeeeeee" Klaus waved his voice, he sung like an angel as he finished off the verse. He strung a guitar to the tone of his voice. As his voice slowed to a halt, he opened his eyes to see a whole lot of other cats and dogs all huddled together around a singular large bond fire. Even Marshall was there, laying down next to the brown and white patched cat as he sung. He was healing for sure, being able to get out of bed, but not without help. As an Irish Setter sat by his side, Her fur was brown in colour but also from dirt, tending to anything he might need.
"Need anything else Sweetheart?" She asked to the Dalmatian. "I'm fine Ell, You're too kind thanks. Hey Klaus, where'd you learn to play and sing like that?" Marshall turned his head toward the feline. "I just have a small passion for this stuff is all, But you know something dude, I used to be afraid of what people thought of me. Even though I still kind of do, I'm glad to be around every single one of you and just spread some love around" Klaus shared, separating his paws outward toward the fire as everyone was really touched by his heart filled words.
All dogs and cats cozied up to one another, they all cared for one another and it didn't matter one group had different from the other, they breathed the same air and they ate the same food when they had it. Klaus looked around the family he had taken the responsibility to overlook, seeing kittens protected by dogs that were ten times bigger than them really meant something to him. "How about another song?" He asked.
None protested, and a majority just smiled, the rest closed their eyes and began to sleep, the crackling of the fire and some insects of the Forrest nearby gave the perfect ambiance for a good night's rest. Klaus turned back to his guitar, plucking at string by string as he dug through his brain, trying to recall another good song for the tone.
"Oooo I got a good one" Klaus muttered as he finally began to string along to a tune, peaceful and harmonious just like his last. Just as he did, he felt a flash behind him for a split second. So fast thinking it could have been lightning, but that was impossible, there wasn't even rain. Klaus turned around to see small flashes of light coming from within the forest.
All the other dogs and cats took notice, hearing small whispers of what it could be. There were two beams of light in fact, they bobbed up and down from time to time. Whatever it was, it was coming closer. Whatever it was, it must be big and powerful, Klaus could hear it knocking down and pushing trees out of the way as it came closer and closer. "What…is that?" Klaus squinted his eyes, it was still quite a good distance away but as it got closer he could make out the outline, Marshall although laying down, could see clearly what it was also.
"No way…. It's the Paw Patroller!" Marshall shouted with glee, his tail wagged knowing Zuma and Skye actually did it. They got the Paw Patroller back; however, it didn't seem to be slowing down. "Uh oh…" Ell the Irish Setter muttered under his breath as everyone else took notice and ran away, screaming in terror. Kittens and Puppies that didn't know what was going on were soon scooped up by their mothers and fathers to carry them away to safety. Within seconds the campfire space was deserted, except for one. "Help, Can't walk well!" Marshall shouted, trying to get back on his feet, but every time his main paw would even twitch with movement, his body would ache once more.
"Marshall!" Ell shouted, running over to grab Marshall with her teeth, yanking him away from the campfire as she tugged and tugged. Klaus tried as well, they both panicked as they looked up to see the Paw Patroller speeding towards them, they were so close Klaus could make out the dog that was driving through the windshield, the chocolate labrador with the cockapoo.
With a final yank, Marshall was dragged swiftly out of the way, just in time as the Paw Patroller tumbled through the exact area Marshall was. Running right over the campfire, smacking the small, kindled twigs all over and putting out the fire immediately. The Paw Patroller continued before running right into the shallow river, way too shallow to stop it as it ran right through, sending water flying to each of its sides.
However, it was enough to slow it down, sending it slamming into a tree, Finally coming to a complete stop. Smoke started to billow up from the front as Skye, Zuma, and Lily came out. All three were dazed beyond belief, unable to walk in straight lines and Lily even collapsed for a moment.
"Zuma, you are officially…. the worst driver….I'll ever….seen" Skye muttered, taking deep breathes in between each statement. "I'd like to see you do bettew, It's not easy going fwom aiwcwaft to caw you know" Zuma defended.
"I'm so glad you guys are back, but did you really have to almost run me over?" Marshall shouted as his friends walked on over to him. "Sorry Marshall, that hill we came down was really something" Zuma stated, rubbing the back of his neck not knowing how to really defend himself in terms of almost running over his friends.
"I guess its okay, at least everyone is alright, Who's that?" The Dalmatian asked, turning his paw over to Lily who was still having trouble walking in a straight line, leaning against the Paw Patroller as if she was going to hurl. "Lily, She's was helping us"
"Was she helpful?" Klaus asked. Zuma and Skye both looked at each other, sure they could both agree she helped, but they both had to break something to Klaus about her actions. "Y-Yeah she did, but Zuma and I gotta talk to you later, in private" Skye said.
"Well okay, you know where to find me dudes"
"We actually don't"
"Oh well, Just ask around until you do. I like to be everywhere. I'll be off for the night, Have some blessed dreams dudes, Peace and Love" He waved as he walked off to his slumber. "And who's this?" Zuma asked, motioning toward the Irish Setter.
"Oh this is Ell, she volunteered to nurse me until my paw is fully healed" Marshall explained, turning to Ell as she nodded. "You're so sweet Marshall, now let's get you back into bed" The Irish Setter said, scooping up the Dalmatian and put him onto her back. Carrying him away like he was luggage, fragile luggage to be exact.
Zuma and Skye knew Marshall was in good paws, looking back to Lily to see her only to see she was gone. They looked up and down and all around before Zuma spotted her. "Thewe" He pointed, seeing Lily run into a small hut with her folder. "I think it's a good time we had a real conversation with her and find out who's side she's really on" Skye said.
"Agweed" The Labrador responded, both taking off running up to the small hut, ready to confront Lily on her suspicious activities throughout and what she was hiding.
