Selkies - two different ideas involving Selkies.
Mimmi notices a large amount of seals around Mako that seems out of place for the Southern Hemisphere. Rita then reveals they are more than just regular seals.
"Has anyone else noticed there's been loads of seals around Mako recently?"
"It's just seals."
"Yeah but they shouldn't be there, they're the wrong kind of seal."
"What do you mean?"
"It's a northern species of seal, they should not be this far south."
"Global warming?"
"Why would that make them come south? It would make southern species go further north Cam."
"It was just a thought, Ondina."
"Can you two stop fighting? This has been constant for days, what is going on?"
"Nothing."
"Nothing."
"Rita, have you seen the seals at Mako?"
"Briefly. Why?"
"Did you notice what type they were?"
"Harbour seals. They're just visiting for a few days then heading north again, nothing to worry about."
"You spoke to them?"
"You can speak seal?"
"There isn't an exact language to speak to seals, but they're not actually seals."
"They look like seals to me," Ondina raised an eyebrow.
"They're Selkies."
"As in the shapeshifting seals?" Cam asked.
"Yeah."
"Oh cool!"
Season 1 AU. RitaxOC. Ola is a Selkie who lives with Rita. Begins S1E3 when Nixie, Lyla and Sirena are at Rita's after she agrees to help them.
Ola surfaced only her head visible above the waves. A little kid pointed at her and waved. She dove back under kicking her fins up in the air before surfacing again a little ways off where she was before. The little kid waved again and laughed, his face an image of pure joy. Kids loved seals. And she loved kids. They were always so excited to see her in the water.
The boy's mother came up behind the kid as he pointed at her again. The mother smiled at her son and gently nudged him on. The kid waved again and called out to her.
'Bye bye sealy.'
Ola dove under and kicked up her fins, sending water flying up.
Kids were the best.
They also never wondered why it was that a Harbour seal swam in Australian waters like other avid sea watchers might. Hey, a girl likes to travel.
Ola swam out into the bay and round the headland, twisting and turning dancing through the water, surfacing once to refill her lungs before continuing on until she found the entrance in the rocks.
Ola shot in, twirling around the corners she'd memorised and burst out into an open pool. She looked around side and side and internally pouted that there was no one there. She liked it when her girlfriend was there when she got back from her swims. She should have finished work by now and be home and she always came straight down here.
Ola swam to the edge of the pool and heaved herself up on the rock ledge on her belly, she rolled over onto her back and her skin came loose at her neck. She pulled the skin away off her face with her claws and let it hang as a hood around her. She wriggled the rest of her body out and stood up. She kicked out each leg, her knees cracking as she did so. Same with her elbows, her knuckles and her neck.
Ola draped her seal skin over her arm and wandered up through the little stairway tunnel. She'd meant to take clothes down here to change into but she'd forgotten and really couldn't be bothered walking all the way back up the stairs to get it from her room. There was never anyone going around here, besides her girlfriend so what did it matter if she walked about wearing nothing.
Famous last words.
She rounded the corner and almost slammed right into someone. Three someones. Two blondes, one a fair bit taller than the other, and a brunette.
"What are you doing?" The tall blonde shot accusingly, "why aren't you wearing any clothes?"
Ola blinked and then moved her seal skin to cover her front. There were people in her house. Huh. Wait, no, not people. One wore a Moon Ring. Mermaids.
"I was out a swim," Ola answered, "I'm sure you three were the same when you first got your legs."
"You're a selkie," the brunette said. She seemed to be trying to hide a smile but it slipped through at the corner of her mouth.
"I'm Ola Morag Norquay, and you are?"
"I'm Nixie, this is Sirena and Lyla."
A flashback scene showing how Rita and Ola met. Rita got splashed and Ola saw her run off and followed after correctly guessing she was a Mermaid.
"I'm not going to come any closer in case I like stand on you or something. I saw you get splashed. I came to help cause you're a bit far from the water and there's kinda a few people going about.
"I'm Ola by the way, I'm a Selkie and I'm not here to do anything other than help a fellow Sea… sister."
The Mermaid dropped her invisibility. Fuck she was gorgeous. She had a cute face, framed with dark red hair and tanned skin all over.
"Sea sister?"
"You okay?"
"Yeah, I'm alright."
"I'm Ola."
"You said that already."
"Oh. Right. I did. Yeah."
"I'm Rita." The Mermaid dried off.
"You okay?"
"You already asked that too."
"Oh. Sorry. You're hot and it's scrambled my brain."
A scene set during S1E19 when Evie's interviewing Rita at her house. Ola isn't overly happy about it and has her suspicions
It was a nice house. Big. Clean. Modern. Expensive. Not the kind of house a school principal could afford. Must be family money. The Gold Coast had it's fair share of wealthy families, while many made up the elite socialite class, like the Bennets or the Kilbrides (?), not everyone with money was a prominent figure amongst upper society.
Rita had led them up pristine white stairs from the front door and into a large open plan sitting room/dining room/kitchen. The walls were plain white but with paintings and other motifs on the wall (including a polished dark wood ships wheel) mounted on the wall.
The whole place was so neat and tidy. It fit with the appearance Rita put out - well put together with not a hair out of place. The only thing Evie could see that was out of place was a single cat toy, a blue fish with shiny fins and a missing eye, lying on a striped rug.
That and the blue and white checked shirt draped over the back of the couch.
"Why don't you take a seat and we'll get started?"
Evie heard footsteps
"Are your nieces here?"
"I'm not sure."
"Hey honey."
The woman that walked in off the stairs was definitely not one of her nieces. Dark hair that came just to her shoulders and was braided back at the sides showing both sides were shaved off.
She hadn't noticed them, instead was looking down at her phone. Evie had seen her in the cafe before a couple of times but didn't know her name.
The woman came up behind Rita, wrapped an arm around her waist and placed a kiss on her cheek. All without looking up from her phone.
"We have visitors."
The woman looked up, "oh. So we do. David, Zac hi."
"Hi Ola," David smiled at the woman while Zac just nodded at her.
"This is Evie."
"Nice to meet you," Evie held out her hand, "I'm interviewing Ms Santos for the school magazine."
Ola shook her hand and looked to Rita, "interesting."
"It's fine."
Ola pursed her lips and let go of Evie's hand. She clearly didn't think it was fine but said nothing more.
