Dark!Mako Rated M - Mentions of blood, death, murder, implied torture, unknown creatures. This chapter is rated M for violence

A dangerous creature is attacking Mermaids

She was cold. Pale too. Paler than a winter's Moon. Her breathing was shallow and slow. She was shaking. Unconscious too. The dark blood filled puddles beneath her as it leaked from slashes on her back, her left shoulder blade, those deep puncture wounds around her knees, the dragged down scratches down her calves.

She was dying. Bleeding out. All because she tried to help.

"I died. They did everything they could and I still died."

She hissed as the fabric of her shirt brushed against the mangled, grooved skin on her back. The skin had healed wrong from when it had been slashed open. It was the same on her legs.

Deep grooves starting deepest at her knees and trailing down her calves onto her feet. The muscles centred around her knees were torn.

Mimmi knows what vampires are really like, Evie was lucky she wasn't one

"I'm a Mermaid, not a Vampire"

Vampires are monsters wearing a human suit. Evie really was lucky she wasn't a vampire.

A kidnapped Mermaid held hostage in horrific circumstances

A bathtub of blood. White tiles spattered pink. Black stained piping between the white. A flickering light. A fly buzzed as it hit the bulb. The door was steel, bolted shut from the outside. There were many rooms like this. Cleverly designed chambers. Designed for torture.

A Mermaid needs water. So give her blood. It kills her slowly. Force her to be trapped, bathing in cold blood. Congealed blood clogged the bottom. Dried blood stained the sides. The floor, the link finger floor was blood and water. The bath was filled entirely with blood.

Mimmi finds and odd key which leads the gang to a sealed cave on Mako. The key unlocks the cave and inside they find something strange

The key was small. Very small. It was half the size of her thumb. The very small key was made from golden metal , twisted at the top into a golden rose. The stem, as it were, was thin and straight. Three little prongs jutted out from the stem. At the very edge the thin gold strip wound around into a tiny little spiral. It was ever so slightly bloodstained.

The wall that rose up towered above them. Dead in the centre of the rough stone was a small golden circle. Upon closer inspection there was a tiny hole. With a trembling hand she guided the small golden key toward the small golden circle and slid the small key into the tiny hole. She turned it. There was a hiss and a crack as a portion of the wall slid open.

Darkness seemed to sleep out much the same way light does when blinds open.

Upon walking through the opening there was a damp, musty odour mixed with a hint of rotting flesh and fish. Considerably pleasant. The air was damp. The walls of the tunnel were damp. Slimey too. There was dripping water. It dripped down and splashed and bounced on the ground and off the walls.

The tunnel opened up into a large cavern mostly filled with water. At the far side of the water there was a large pile of bones. Around the edges there was a narrow rock ledge. The rock , like the tunnel, was wet and slimey, coated in green sludge.

Something moved in the water. Ripples were sent across the surface. A flash of green, the same shade as the sludge on the walls and ground, was seen darting below the water.

The group shared an uneasy look.

A shape appeared above the water. The top half of a head. Black eyes stared vacantly through matted dark hair. More of the face was revealed as the as yet unknown thing in the water moved upwards.

The head and the tops of the shoulders could clearly be seen above the water. The face was gaunt, cheekbones entirely prominent , enhanced by sunken cheeks. Thin lips parted to reveal small pointed teeth. Small, yellow, pointed teeth. Gills could be seen above collarbones.

The thing tilted its head and studied the intruders before slipping under the water. A green scaled tail broke the surface and a green fin fluked before vanishing. It wasn't a particularly nice shade of green. It was a mucky yellow rotted to a shade akin to green.

The creature appeared by the pile of bones. It snarled at them. Claw topped hands grabbed and flung bones at them. Most splashed into the water. The creature dove into the air and down into the water again.

The creature from the cave escapes and attacks and kills someone

The light turned on. A man was lying on the now red and grey carpet. His stomach and chest was torn open, his throat too. There was a shape crouched in the corner. It snarled at them. It's hands were bloody. It's teeth were bloody. it's face was bloody. It dropped bloody remnants of something on the floor. Black eyes stared straight through them.

"Stay back."

It was humanoid with a gaunt face and hair like rats tails. It lunged at them, slipping past and darting down the stairs.

"That was the creature from the cave."

A Merman turns up and is killed in front of the Mako gang. Evie is struggling in the aftermath of watching what happened.

She still heard the scream. Echoing through her mind. Intruding her dreams. The fact that so much pain could've been conveyed in a single noise, haunted her.

Her phone buzzed.

You up?

It was Zac

Yeah, couldn't sleep

Three weeks and she'd slept all night four out of twenty one nights. She kept seeing that man. That Merman. He was a perfect stranger and she had watched him die.

Come over. We can watch a movie, your shout

It's 3am

And?

Evie couldn't stop herself smiling. Despite it all, Zac didn't seem to have changed. All the bloodshed and he still acted the same as before. Upon thinking, maybe it wasn't so good then. It had to have affected him somehow. It wasn't healthy for it to not have.

I'll be over soon

I'll swim over and we'll walk back to mine. I'm not having you walking alone. Stay inside till I appear like a ghost at the window. Woooo

I can't remember the context but something's happened at Rita's house. Most likely one of the Mermaids has been attacked and taken

"You guys need to get back here. There's blood everywhere and I don't know where anyone is," Evie

"Evie, slow down, what's going on?"

"I'm at Rita's, there's blood all over the kitchen and there's no one here."

This was initially an unrelated scene but it works as a follow one from the unknown Mermaid who was attacked and taken.

Vacant eyes stared straight through them. Her skin was a sickly pale hue, a white canvas that has been thoroughly abused. Bruises in purples, blues and yellows. Bashes and cuts, all in varying shades of red. Blue veins ran like thread below her skin, enhanced by the sunken look.

She didn't even bother to sit up. She was lying on the uneven floor, bleeding from a gash on her forehead, most likely from being thrown to the ground.
