Short Little Stories. Ideas, Extracts and Summaries
Set during S1E24. Rita asks about all of Zac's powers. While explaining to Zac about the larger range of Powers different Mermaids can have she mentions Bella 's powers. Zac then sees the photo of Rita and Harry and they talk about trusting land people.
In which they find a unicorn - basically that. They find a unicorn.

The Mermaids being confused by different land stuff.
They all think Rita and Dr Ross are dating, based on minimal evidence. Meeting once a week, text occasionally, stopping by once for coffee in the morning. Fail to notice Rita and Veridia are together. Never notice Veridia is round every morning, smudged lipstick and hidden bruises.
Tumblr prompt requested "X pulls Y in for a kiss by their necktie" with Rita and Dr Ross
Rita "We're going to be late. I thought it was meant to be women that took longer to get ready!"
Dr Ross "I'll just be a minute!"
A Mermaid learning to walk on land in stolen clothes
The stone walls of the harbour lay empty. The tide was too far out to fill it with sea water. The sand along the bottom was grey and speckled with seaweed. The ruins of boats, some still moored, were scattered like the toys of a child.
Walking was hard. The black trainers she'd found were too big and her heels kept lifting out of them.
The sand gave way under her feet. It was heavy wet sand and she struggled to lift her feet up high enough.
The tight trousers she'd liberated cut in behind her knees. While the t-shirt was far too big and hung down half way down the top part of her legs.
Full Moon's Are Exhausting, this is set during S2 I think maybe the morning after New Orders. Zac and Evie are all up night doing Mermaid stuff then have to get up and go to school the very next morning
"Zac it's time to get up. Zac it's time to get up. Zac it-" Zac's alarm rang out.
"Zac get up. Now." Dr Blakely had come in as Zac's alarm had been snoozed multiple times and now Zac was actually running late. Having not seen Zac all morning he comes in to check on him and finds him still asleep.
Zac groaned and shifted in his bed, trying to burrow away from the light.
"You should have left five minutes ago."
"Mmm." Zac pulled the duvet up over his head letting the muted darkness encase him.
"Zac. School. Now." The duvet was pulled away.
"If you're not going to be able to get up for school in the mornings, you're not going to be allowed out at night. What time did you even get home last night?"
He could hear his dad moving around, opening drawers and shutting them again. Items of clothing landed on his back. His dad got clothes out for him and tossed them onto him in an attempt to get him ready
"If you're not gone in the next five minutes, I will ground you. You're on thin enough ice as it is at school with your grades. Any later than that and you'll be late and then you'll have the teachers to deal with as well."
Zac waited until the door shut before he rolled over.
Bloody full Moons. Bloody Chamber. Bloody Trident. Bloody school.
Zac sat up with a groan and fumbled to the side, picking up the t-shirt. He pulled it on yawning.
At school Evie was in a similar state.
Set during S1 between E4 and E5. In an attempt to ease the relationship with Evie and make the girls fit in better, Rita makes them do something nice for Evie. They go back to the shoe shop and buy the shoes Evie and Nixie fought over as a present for Evie. As Sirena and Nixie were banned, they make Lyla go in and buy them.
"Why are we doing this?" Lyla whispered as she walked down the street with Sirena and Nixie both invisible beside her.
"Because - Rita said we have to mend fences with Evie, whatever that means, and this is a good way to do it. We'll get the shoes and pay her for the clothes we bought yesterday and apologise for causing all that trouble yesterday," Sirena replied from the left.
"Okay, it's this shop here."
"Look at the different shoes, pretend you're interested in every pair,"
"But I'm not,"
"It's called pretending Lyla, suck it up."
"It's those pretty black shoes there, these ones."
Sirena picked up the shoes.
Some random excerpts that don't fit into any one idea/story
What the Mermaid was wearing could be described as pyjamas. The dark blue fleece trousers dotted in light blue and white stars that trailed around her heels combined with an 'Iron Maiden' shirt that was easily three times the size of her that draped over her chest then hung loose to about halfway down her thighs, made her appear a lot smaller than usual.
"Just act like this is normal."
"But it's not."
"That's why I said act."
"We're about to enter a world of chaos and danger, follow my lead."
"That sounds like something Nixie would say."
"I'm pretty sure she did say that."
The Mermaid ran and dove headlong into the water. The waves working quickly to erase the ripples as she swam downwards to the rocky floor. She pulled to a stop, arms circling and fin flicking to keep herself in one place.
Anyone else remember that internet challenge - The Silly Salmon? Zac and Cam find it hilarious and have to recreate it
"Hey Zac," Cam grinned, "do the silly salmon."
Zac glanced around, no one to the left, no one to the right, no one behind, no one in front.
Zac ran headlong at the bridge, gripped the railing and vaulted over, pushing off from the thin lip of concrete on the other side of the railing. As he fell he wriggled his body in the air and gobbled, rather like a turkey.
Then he hit the water.
The Mermaids get a pet fish. Inspired by my tumblr post about Evie's goldfish. As keeping a goldfish in a bowl is bad fishkeeping Evie upgrades her pet goldfish's tank. Mimmi and Ondina decide to get a betta fish to keep at Rita's with the proper set up
"Didn't you learn your lesson with Evie's goldfish?" Cam crossed his arms and looked at the clear, water filled bag containing a single fish.
"This is different," Ondina said, "we got a proper tank with a heater and a filter and plants and stuff that we set up last month at Evie's."
"We also got this stuff to quick start a tank to replace any bacteria lost while moving the tank to Rita's," Mimmi added.
"When are you moving it?"
"Once Evie's done we're going to hers to move it."
The Mermaids are dragged on a ferry trip and Ondina doesn't like it
Boats were weird. Ondina decided that fact pretty soon after stepping onto the boat. The ground vibrated under her feet and the roll of the ocean was non existent. What was the point in being on the Sea if you couldn't feel the Sea? She couldn't even see the Sea from where Evie had dragged them.
Carly had already chosen to block them out with a weird eye mask and earplugs, which Evie explained was due to her getting seasick. That was another weird thing. The Sea making someone sick. Carly went fishing the whole time in a tiny boat, yet got seasick on a big ferry. Maybe it was just land people who were weird.
Mermaids and rain
She woke up with the rain. Heavy rain drummed into the window, the water attempting to hammer its way through the glass. From the looks of the half drowned pots of plants in the garden below, faintly visible through the streams of water pouring down the window, the rain had been a constant thing through the night.
Watching the rain while sheltered inside, safe behind the glass was such a normalised experience for land people, but to watch it from the warmth of the house after spending years out in the elements was such an … odd feeling. As the world was drowned out it was easy to feel like every problem was drowned out with it.
Unfortunately that was never the case.
A Mermaid has been washed up by a storm after getting caught out the night before
The rock bit into her arm and the sand beneath her skin scratched and tore at her like millions of tiny needles. The waves, still riled from the storm, did their best to drape her in their protective embraces but each passed over, breaking around her and falling forward to the shore.
She couldn't move. She couldn't feel to move. She couldn't think to move. Her tail was stiff and heavy, attached like a deadweight and her arms were no better. She could feel warm blood dripping from where the rock was pressing into her arm. She needed to move her arm. Why couldn't she move her arm?
The drumming of the waves echoed around her skull, pounding and thudding with every movement she managed to make. She pulled her arm carefully away from the rock, hissing as a spurt of blood accompanied the action. She dropped her arm into the water and the sea soothed it. Red swirls danced in the water and the water carried her blood away.
She had to get out of the water. The storm had disoriented her and she couldn't recognise the low cliff face off to the left or the sprawling beach to the right. She didn't know if this was a public beach that people used or one far from anything. From where she was, someone could be only a few steps away from her and she'd never know until it was too late and they'd seen her. She doubted she'd even be able to turn invisible if she had to.
She pushed her hand against the sand floor and moved her tail, trying to gain enough momentum to move forward. The movement sent tearing pain shooting through her tail. Enough to make her cry out a torn sob. Tides it hurt.
A herd of wild horses appear on Mako. Turns out they are a magical breed. Legend says they are created from Sea Foam and Moonlight. Once bonded to a Mermaid they can be summoned by their Mermaid from any source of natural water to come to their Mermaid's aid. They are sure footed over any ground thanks to their magic abilities and the same magic ensures their bonded rider can never slip off.
The legend says Poseidon created the horses to protect his creations - the Mermaids - when they ventured onto land. Pushed by disasters and wars, his Mermaids fled to land to find new homes away from the dangers. He gifted them the horses to carry them safely to new bodies of water.
Each horse was a different shade of grey. One was far lighter than the other two and had been the one keeping its distance when the other two had approached and sniffed at them all and let them stroke their faces and pat their necks.
"You see the pale one?" Mimmi said, "it's already bonded to a Mermaid. That's why it doesn't come near us."
The colouring of each horse was slightly different, one was a steel grey with light dapples, one a softer grey flecked in little darker spots, another pale grey one, then the almost white bonded one. They all stood around the same height with a similar build with fluffy hair around their hooves and thick manes and tails.
One of the land girls, maybe Carly, complaining to the Mermaids about land boys.
"I hate to sound like a typical female, but seriously, boys can be so dense. They basically have to be told everything."
"Maybe if you land people didn't speak in code the whole time, maybe members of your own species could understand you."
"Or just don't date guys."
"That is an option."
"Forget land boys, date Mermaids."
"Do you guys have romantic relationships within Pods? "
"It's actually pretty common. We don't have the whole labels system you land people have. There's none of that , what's the word? Stigma. There's no stigma attached to relationships. Unless it's with land boys or Mermen. But even then it's easily overlooked. Sexuality isn't a concept that really exists."
"I like your philosophy."
A dragon of a different kind turns up. Think more of a Game of Thrones dragon/wyvern (a dragon with two legs and two wings) They find a small baby dragon and keep it as a pet of sorts. Of course it inevitably grows to be a massive dragon.
They knew dragons existed but still, to find one curled up on a discarded hoodie was a surprise.
A scene from when the Dragon is grown up
A slow, deep growl in the dark. A quiet snarl in a baritone tone. The mass of the presence seemed to fill the night. Weak torch beams glinted off dark scales. Far above the full Moon's glow was revealed as the clouds parted for it's midnight show.
A Dragon 's show. Sorry, a Wyvern show.
The creature stood, clawed wing tips digging into the sand. He wriggled his neck and lowered his head, his nostrils flared at he sniffed the air. Another low growl was emitted. He opened his mouth and rows of sharp teeth was seen, as well dark tongue as the Wyvern roared. Eyes like fire stared them down.
Weilan is practising on a keyboard for a music assignment and making a lot of noise. It's late at night and she's been playing for a while
"Can you turn that off?"
"Nope. "
The Mermaid was sitting in front of an electric keyboard, music displayed in front of her.
"How much have you got so far?"
The Mermaid played a few bars from the piece in front of her.
Veridia comes home to Rita who has a new pet
"What is this?" Veridia asked
Rita stood at the grotto entrance holding the squirming puppy.
"It's a puppy. You know, a baby dog."
"I know what a puppy is. Why is it here?"
"It's a he and he was David's but it turns out his dad's allergic so Sirena said she'd take him."
Story idea: The Dangers of Dating As a Mermaid (Or Merman) Some of the humorous things that might not have been considered when a Mermaid (or merman) dates a land person
"I was going to take a shower… if you want to join me?"
"I would love too,but I have to get ready to go."
A couple of scenes of Mimmi in the Moon Pool
Mimmi surfaced in the Moon Pool. It was startlingly empty. The whole place seemed to be holding its breath. The silence was unusual and set Mimmi on edge.
Usually there were lapping waves, dripping water, distant birds and whatever other sounds she couldn't identify. Today there was nothing. A void of silence.
The shells they all kept in little sections all organised just seemed abandoned. It was a mess. They were all neatly arranged yet to Mimmi they looked like clutter.
Mimmi sat up against the rock ledge and let her tail float on the water. She selected her favourite brush from her pile, one that Sirena told her used to belong to Nixie. She kept meaning to duplicate it so she could have her own one once Nixie returned. If Nixie returned.
A creepy old guy sees one of the Mermaids while out and about on land and knows what she is
"I know what you are."
The old man with missing teeth and scraggly salt and pepper hair and beard grabbed the Mermaid's arm and pulled her down to his eye level. He had a hooked nose and one white eye.
"And what would that be?"
"Fuck off back to the Sea, Mer-bitch."
The man let go of her arm and laughed. He flashed a necklace of teeth and scales before spitting on the ground at her feet.
