Short little stories continued
While stuck inside one day the gang find some old photos of Rita's. Set post S3, Weilan is there, Sirena is back but Nixie and Lyla have not returned. It was never determined exactly who is present in this scene
Mentions of pregnancy and heavily implied a loss of either pregnancy or baby
"Ooh, photos!"
"Photos?"
Weilan took a pile of glossy photos out of a wallet with the logo of some long shut down photo development company. "Photos,'' Weilan repeated.
"Let's see."
They find old photos of Rita, some with Harry, some of people they've never seen, some with horses, some landscape photos including some with Mako in it
"She looks so pretty in this one." Weilan turned the photo around to show them.
Throw in some random comments about the different photos
"What's this?"
"That's a sonogram picture."
"A what?"
"When you're pregnant doctors use a sonogram to see the baby inside the Mother. They give you photos if you want."
"Rita was pregnant?"
"She's never mentioned a kid and there certainly isn't one around here."
"Sirena, you should ask her. It's her name on this photo."
"Why me?"
"She likes you best."
"That's not true."
"It is, if she was to have a favourite it would be you. You're definitely the favourite."
Sirena shook her head, "Nixie is."
"Well Nixie isn't here so you have to ask her. Now. She's going out later."
"Sirena does weird stuff all the time. It's a defining part of her personality."
"People say that about you too, Ondina."
Ondina and Weilan are invited to visit Rita and Veridia while helping a Pod get reestablished in Spain. There is some tension between Ondina and Veridia which I can't remember why but likely follows my headcannon that Ondina is Veridia's daughter so there's something there, idk
"Rita invited us to come and visit while she's helping the Pod get resettled in Cantabrian."
"Where and what?"
"It's in Spain, there used to be a Pod there but then they left and now they're returning and Rita went over because she used to live with that Pod."
"Is Veridia with her?"
"She never said -"
"I'm not going if she's there."
"Ondina, it's a free holiday to an amazing country, don't let someone else ruin it for us."
"It's free?"
"Rita paid for everything and I really want to go with you so, please?"
"Fine."
Ondina finds it colder than she thought it would be in Spain
"I thought Spain was supposed to be warm."
"It's warmer than Shanghai."
"It's still cold."
"My spoiled little Southern Mermaid, not used to the cool. How ever will you cope?"
Cam's thoughts on Erik that day at the beach where he finds out Erik is a Merman too
Zac had ditched him since becoming a fish boy so he was stuck with Luca and (that other lifeguard boy from S2E14)
Then the dude took off into the sea in a Zac style mer-escape. He couldn't be, could he? Surely Zac would have told him? But then they weren't really speaking nowadays…
Post S3, Nerissa moves into Rita's house on land. She can't sleep and gets up one night to find Rita up as well busy on her laptop
It was a little after 2am and she couldn't sleep. The sheets felt heavy on top of her and the windless air of the room was suffocating. Nerissa threw off the covers and lay without them, trying to get back to sleep.
Nerissa gets up and goes through the house, finds Rita still sitting up at the table on her laptop
Nerissa "What are you doing up?"
Rita "Trying to get some work done."
"This late?"
"Well it needs done. Apparently when you are no longer employed people really worry about how you're going to pay your bills."
"How do you?"
"I had a friend sell some stuff. I'm sorted for a while."
"Stuff?"
"From downstairs."
"What have you all got down there?"
A Mermaid talking about the nature of other Mermaid's out there
"Mermaids aren't this great peace loving species who can do no wrong. There are Pods out there right now tearing each other apart in what you call civil wars. Mermaids kill each other. They, we, kill land people because our rules are different and it's not considered a punishable offence.
Mimmi and Ondina want to try out an old spell they found, under Nerissa's guidance they try it. In War times it was possible to see through the Moon Pool. The Mermaids created the spell and leaked it to the Merman without letting slip one crucial detail - the Mermaid/man the Moon Pool was being used to see could tell they were being spied on. This was due to the increase in Moon energy and magic surrounding them, in some cases a Mermaid's eyes would even flash blue when the Moon Pool was used. It was used to set traps for Mermen attacks, the Mermaids devised a code to let others know the Mermen were watching and would leak false information.
Some more powerful Mermaids were able to block this spell being used on them as they could sense the incoming magic and could focus their own mental defences inwards.
"Focus on Zac," Nerissa instructed, "and charge the pool with the energy of your ring."
"Is one really enough?" Mimmi asked.
"For the Moon Pool, yes. It already has the energy required, it just needs a live charge by using a Moon Ring. If you were using normal water you would need more rings to give the water the energy needed."
Ondina's ring glowed blue.
"Now Mimmi, add your Power and focus your thoughts on Zac. He knows we're doing this so there shouldn't be any resistance."
The Mermaids want to have a party for Carly to make her feel better about her parents not being accepting of her bisexuality. Set during S2
No explicit homophobia
"Rita, could we have a party here?" Ondina asked.
"A party? Here?"
"Yea."
"Absolutely not."
"Tell her," Mimmi mouthed to Ondina.
"It's for Carly," Ondina explained,
"Then have it at the cafè. There's more room there."
"It's a more private party for only a few people. It's just us, David, Carly obviously, Evie, Zac, Cam and Sirena. Only nine people and no alcohol. I promise we'll stay in separate rooms."
"Stay? You were only asking about a party a minute ago."
"Maybe rephrase Ondina?" Mimmi suggested.
"How about you do it?" Ondina turned to Mimmi.
"What is this about?" Rita asked.
"Can we have a sleepover and a mini party to celebrate Carly coming out as Bi? We know that kind of thing is a big deal for land people so..?"
"Fine."
"Thanks Rita! Oh, could you take us shopping? We need land food."
Rita laughed.
"Please. We want to do something nice for Carly. We already explained that Mermaids don't really put as much emphasis on this stuff as land people."
"Alright, we'll go shopping. Let me get dressed first?"
"How are your sleep clothes smarter than my normal clothes?"
Carly has a question about one of the Mermaids, maybe Weilan (I can see her being bi or pan but very strong preference for women)
"You gay?" Carly asked
The Mermaid turned to look at her.
"Bi."
"Same,"Carly held up her hand,"high five."
Rita and Erik have a rare conversation. Erik feels he was never a part of the group on land and would never have been accepted.
"That's the thing Erik, you could've. Even if the Mako Pod hadn't accepted you, you were part of it on land. "
"But you're not from Mako, are you?"
"No. I lived there for a long time before coming to land."
"So how did a Mermaid get a job as a principal?"
"I've had a lot of land based education. I started at one of the primary schools for about a year, after leaving the Mako Pod."
