OCxRita
AU Where Rita was married to a land girl rather than Harry who didn't die. Would have been a re-write of the series with a new character involved
"I got new shoes, what do you guys think?" Raya walked in, the soles of her trainers lit up in bright pink light.
"Honey…"
"Yeah?"
"You are such a child."
"I know," Raya grinned, "but you love me. Light up trainers and all."
Mornings. They come every day like clockwork to start the day. Love them or hate them, they always came.
Sleepy mornings were her favourite. Waking up before her alarm went off with her wife still sleeping beside her, sometimes on her, using her as a pillow. It was a state of warmth and happiness sheltered under the covers before the beeping of the alarm shattered the illusion of timelessness and the day had to begin.
Then there were the other mornings. Waking up to an empty space beside her and a void of imagined cold. That wasn't always the physical morning, after working the night shift it was often late afternoon she woke up dazed and still aching from her shift. There was usually a cup of tea for her on the bedside cabinet and sometimes a note. Though the tea was more often than not cold by the time she woke up to drink it, the gesture eased the empty feeling of waking up alone after those warm, sleepy mornings.
This morning was the former. Raya woke up her hand on the skin of Rita's hip where the Mermaid's top had ridden up during the night. Raya shifted over and gently brushed Rita's hair back off her face.
The alarm hadn't gone yet. Raya didn't know what time it was, she didn't want to move to check and disturb her wife.
A loud bang echoed out through the house shredding the blanket of peace that settled throughout the night.
Rita groaned, "what have they done now?" She didn't open her eyes.
"We'll find out later," Raya said, tucking a strand of Rita's hair behind her ear.
The shift in the Mermaid's breathing signified she was sleeping again.
Raya relaxed back into the pillows.
Another bang sounded and Raya eased the quilt off Rita's shoulders and pulled it up over her head before shifting down and joining her wife under the blanket.
Warm mornings. Always so peaceful.
The best morning had been the first one. Not the very first one, Raya had been thoroughly hungover that morning and woke up feeling like she'd been hit into the ground by a tractor.
The best morning had been the first one as a married couple. It felt like the first one. It had been the first one of a new life and the feeling stuck with her, the bubbling happiness as Raya realised this was her life now, married to an amazing woman.
It was the best feeling.
Raya slipped quietly into her shared bedroom a little after 4am. The house had been so still and silent as she padded around in her socks. She'd gotten home early for a change and had contemplated watching the new Saw movie before going to bed, as a treat, but decided against it. She just wanted to sleep and see her wife, preferably in the opposite order.
Raya changed into the pajama's Rita had set out for her and finished the last two mouthfuls of her tea. She cancelled the alarms Rita had set on her phone and crawled into bed beside her.
It was sweet how Rita did that. She always set that alarm for 5am on nights that Raya worked night shift so she would be awake when Raya got home.
Rita didn't stir even as Raya untangled the remaining quilt fabric from Rita's legs and wrapped her arm around the sleeping Mermaid.
Raya hated these nights. By the time she woke up Rita would be away somewhere, usually it was work, and Raya would be left to wake up in an empty bed.
Long nights lead to cold mornings.
