Jack leaves the group to stand at the bow of his beloved Black Pearl, trusting the waves below to keep her steady. He carefully sheaths his sword, gifted to him by an old friend.
Confronting Davy Jones, undead captain of The Flying Dutchman, will prove to be interesting. This will be the first time Jack has personally seen the tentacled man in this lifetime, as he had carefully avoided coming close to death on the seas. Jones had never even appeared in the Brethren Court, to his knowledge.
The others doubt him, as is evident from the whispering and glances in his direction. Really, he will be doing less of negotiating between Calypso and her former betrothed, and more making sure they hold a conversation without unnecessarily violent threats.
Jack is honestly more concerned if Beckett comes back. That annoying English man has so far been avoided, but if he remembers Jack and the past life, then that may change. The captain makes a face, remembering the unimposing man setting his beloved ship on fire three long centuries ago.
The two ships circle closer and closer together. Pulling a spyglass from the depths of his pockets, Jack watches The Flying Dutchman with anticipation. Davy Jones steps out on the barnacle encrusted deck, then turns and glares at him across the water. Jack grins.
"What are you looking at?"
The captain turns to find James at his side, clutching at the rails. His voice is raised only slightly, as the noise from crashing water and thunder has somehow gotten quieter closer to the source. Calypso was to thank for that. How, he doesn't know. Better not to ask.
"Oh, I'm just watching Fish-Face. Nothing to worry your pretty little head about, Norrie."
James makes a weird expression with his face, first his eyebrows going up then scrunching together in confusion. It's difficult not to laugh.
When the former Commodore gets his thoughts back in order, he clears his throat and steps closer to Jack.
"When did you negotiate this happening in the first place? And how do you plan on going about it?" he asks.
Jack shakes his head slowly, as to convey his disappointment without flinging his dreads in the other's face. "What happened to 'trust me?'"
"Look, a lot has happened in the past few hours—days—but despite that I have no reason to trust you. I'm here for Elizabeth, and Elizabeth only. I didn't ever trust you in our past lives, either. So tell me what's going on," James counters.
Jack sighs, heavy and dramatic. By the seas, can't I just be cryptic for once? This century is so bloody paranoid.
"Calypso and I worked it out. While Davy Jones was reincarnated, he didn't have a go at his normal life, it was just straight to the depths for him. And of course gods don't die. So, they still have all the same problems they did before."
James nods slowly. "So why did Davy Jones fire at us?"
"Well that's the difficult part." Jack blows out a breath. "He doesn't know."
After many yelled words across the maelstrom—massively helped by Calypso's altered sound physics—they're finally allowed to board The Flying Dutchman.
"You'd better be tellin' the truth," Davy Jones snarls, spitting out the word 'truth' like it's particularly foul. "Otherwise I'm takin' your soul the way I should've before."
Jack just grins the widest he can, taking wide strides across the slimy deck. To be honest, he's more troubled with what to call the squid-man. The full name is much too formal, of course, and neither his first nor his last names alone quite sound right to refer to the ferrier of souls lost at sea. He'll have to think on it.
The captain of the Black Pearl leads his way down to the main cabin of the ship, Davy's heavy steps apparent behind him. The other three will have to stay on deck, as Fish-Face was barely tolerating even his presence. Hopefully, the two crews won't start fighting.
Jack stops a few feet away from the massive organ, then turns to beam at the other captain. Jones just scowls, tentacles somehow looking aggravated. Jack is used to other people being annoyed by him, so the expression is almost funny rather than intimidating.
Ooh, that's an idea—give him a name that takes away from the natural terror a sailer feels upon hearing it. Something like… DJ! Perfect.
"Well, now that we are gathered here, it comes to my attention that it is rather difficult for three people to talk when one is not actually here," Jack points out.
"Patience, Witty Jack," Calypso drawls, forming from a small puddle near the organ. "You know you're only 'ere so that ev'ry'thin' goes… smoothly."
The sea goddess sweeps closer to DJ, and his crab leg skitters back, tentacles pressing away. Even the sea is fearful of its ruler.
"Calypso," the squid-man breathes. His hands reach out instinctively, shaking, then he pulls them back. "It's been long. Too long."
She smiles at her former love, lips spreading to reveal pointed teeth. "I know."
Jack watches the pair carefully. This… it wasn't the reason Calypso had used ancient powers to bring so many of those touched with the sea back into this new world. No, their reunion was only a benefit—a strong one, nonetheless.
When Jack had first met Calypso after his rebirth, the sea goddess had told him of his past three centuries ago. She had removed the barrier between his memories then and memories now, and he could see them line up perfectly, like two strands of fate laid out carefully to weave the web of his life. But at that moment, they separated slightly. Every event from his past he dodged in the present further split apart the memories, and he's starting to see the same in the others reborn.
Will's was when he had re-met Hector. The two hadn't yet met according to his memories, so it was enough to split the strands. Lizzie's had started to separate the moment she was rescued and Jack didn't have to escape from the guards recognizing him as a pirate. This was interesting, because the division happened because of events really outside her control. And dear James. His were the last to separate, when he came onto the Fair Wind with Elizabeth.
Yet despite all of Jack's memories being accessible, and the conversations with Calypso, it's still not clear why she brought them back.
Maybe she'll finally tell him… after she and DJ reunite, of course.
He probably shouldn't hold out on it.
