Elena was becoming antsy as she waited for Elijah to find her. It had been over a week since her kidnapping, and since he told her she wasn't entirely human. She was starting to wonder if he would come at all. He said he would, but it had been more than a week, and the truth was, he didn't owe her anything. He'd just met her and she was nothing to him. She had just been a way to break a curse, and she wasn't even that anymore.
Elena needed Elijah to come though. He was the only person that could help her figure out what was happening to her. Her friends couldn't. They didn't know about it, and Elijah had ensured she couldn't tell them. It didn't stop them from asking though. It didn't matter how many times she told them she couldn't tell them. They still kept trying to get around the compulsion. They would ask her every different way they could to find some kind of loophole. Unfortunately, Elijah had been thorough.
Elena considered the fact that maybe Elijah was lying. She wanted to believe he was lying, but human if that wasn't the case? In fact, he seemed dismayed by the whole thing. She supposed because she couldn't help him if he wasn't human.
Elena sighed as she sat in her room. She had to find some way of figuring this out. She couldn't just wait around for Elijah. Who knew if he'd ever come back. She also couldn't get help from anyone else. She was on her own. She would have to figure it out for herself, and she had to do it without telling anyone anything. "Talk about attempting the impossible."
Elena soon heard a knock on the door. There was no one else home, so she went down to answer it. When she opened the door, she was shocked to find Elijah there. She had pretty much given up hope that he was coming. "Elijah."
"Hello, Elena," Elijah greeted.
"You came," Elena said sounding surprised.
"You thought that I wouldn't? I told you I would find you. I always keep my word. Come with me. We're going to take a ride," Elijah said. The tone in his voice made it clear that he expected compliance. It was not a request.
Elena knew she should probably not go off with a vampire she'd only met once, but he was the only one that could help her. Besides, she wasn't afraid of Elijah. She just knew that he wouldn't hurt her. Still, she couldn't just go off with him without at least figuring out how long they'd be gone. Did she need to pack a bag? What was she supposed to tell Jenna and her friends. "How long will we be gone?"
"I will have you back tonight one way or another," Elijah assured her.
"Okay, give me a second," Elena said before going back inside. She quickly grabbed her purse and wrote a note for Jenna and Jeremy. It only said that she was with a friend and would be back in a few hours. She then rushed back to the door and walked with Elijah to his car. Once they were in the car, she turned to him. "Where are we going?"
"To see an associate of mine. When we get there, you must do exactly as I say. My associate is a witch, and they can be dangerous, especially to beings that aren't fully human," Elijah said.
"I know," Elena said. She'd met witches that weren't friendly to supernatural creatures, like Bonnie's grandmother. Even Bonnie wasn't very friendly with vampires, except for Caroline and Stefan. She just never thought she might be on the list of beings that witches would consider dangerous.

Elena followed Elijah into a house. Once inside, she found herself in a specious dining room. A man greeted them at the door, who Elena could only guess was Elijah's witch.
"Elena, this is Jonas. He will be assisting us today," Elijah told her.
"Hello, Elena," Jonas said as he held his hand out for her.
"Hi," Elena said as she shook his hand briefly.
"Have a seat," Jonas said as he gestured to the dining room table.
Elena took a seat at the table, where a bowl, some herbs and several lit candles laid.
Jonas sat across from Elena while Elijah sat next to her.
"What are you going to do?" Elena asked nervously.
"We'll start off with me just holding your hand and trying to sense you. I can sense most supernatural creatures with just a touch," Jonas said.
Elena nodded. She did know that much. Bonnie was able to sense that there was something different about Stefan just by touching him, and that was back when she first discovered her powers.
"Take my hand," Jonas said as he extended his hand to her.
Elena glanced at Elijah. He'd asked her to follow his lead, and for some reason, she trusted him more than Jonas. She didn't know why, as they were both dangerous and both strangers to her.
Elijah gave her a curt nod.
Elena placed her hand in Jonas' and waited to see what he'd do.
Jonas brought his free hand forward and placed it on top of Elena's. He then closed his eyes and focused on her. He stayed like that for a good five to ten minutes before opening his eyes again and releasing her hand.
Elena looked at Jonas. He seemed to be in utter shock as he stared at her. He'd obviously seen something, and it surprised him. That didn't exactly comfort Elena though.
"Well? You've discovered something. Tell us," Elijah ordered.
"Well, she's definitely not a doppelganger. You were right about that. There's no doppelganger magic in her," Jonas said. There was magic, a lot of it, but not doppelganger magic.
"Why do I look so much like Katherine then?" Elena asked.
"Genetics, I'm guessing. It happens. Two family members can sometimes have an uncanny resemblance without magic being involved," Jonas told her before turning to Elijah. "What does this mean for our deal?"
"I keep my word, Jonas. I will help you, but first you will help us. The shock on your face was not about the simple fact that she is not a doppelganger. What did you discover?" Elijah asked.
"For one, she has vampirism in her," Jonas said.
"What?" Elena asked in disbelief.
Elijah shook his head. "No, you must be mistaken. I would've been able to sense that. Whatever she is, it's nothing I've sensed before."
"No, it's definitely there, but it's different than with a typical vampire," Jonas said.
"You're wrong. I'm not a vampire. I don't drink blood. I don't need a magical ring to walk in the sun. I wear vervain! I'm not a vampire," Elena said.
"I'm sorry, but you are. You may not be a typical vampire, but you are one," Jonas said.
"Do not try to play me for a fool, Jonas. The girl has human in her," Elijah said. Once a person became a vampire, they were no longer considered human. There would be no way to sense humanity in them, and he could sense humanity in Elena.
"I'm not. Look, it should be impossible. Everything about this girl should be impossible. She shouldn't exist," Jonas said.
Elena flinched at Jonas' words. He was talking about her like she was a freak, something to be studied or destroyed.
"Keep your opinions to yourself. They aren't wanted. Tell me exactly what you sensed," Elijah demanded.
"What I sensed was humanity and vampirism wrapped up in a ton of magic," Jonas said.
"Magic? Like witchcraft?" Elena asked.
Elijah shook his head. "That's not possible. Witches who transition lose their abilities. Nature won't allow a vampire to keep witchcraft."
"No, I can't be a witch. I don't have any powers," Elena said.
"That's because another witch has blocked your magic, but it's there and it's fighting to break free. It will eventually. The magic surrounding you is too strong," Jonas told her.
"But how is this possible? How can I be a vampire when I wasn't turned? How can I be a witch if Elijah says vampires can't be witches? What is happening to me?" Elena asked frantically.
"I don't know. I have never seen anything like you before. All I can do is theorize. My only theory is that you were born this way," Jonas said.
"Which is equally impossible. No one is born a vampire. They are transformed that way," Elijah said.
"Are you sure?" Elena asked Elijah.
"Yes. I was one of the first vampires ever created. It was through magic," Elijah said.
"Maybe if one of her parents was a vampire," Jonas guessed. That was equally impossible, but it was his only guess at this point.
"Vampires can have children?" Elena asked in surprise.
"No, they can't. Jonas, if you are trying to play me, you will suffer the consequences," Elijah warned.
"If I wanted to make something up to fool you, would I really choose something that is in every way unfathomable. I would at least make it believable," Jonas reasoned.
Elijah sighed. He had a point. Jonas wasn't an idiot. For one, he needed Elijah too much to make something like this up, and if he did make something up, it wouldn't be something that was utterly impossible. "You're sure of your findings?"
"Yes. I don't know how it's possible, but this girl is three things that shouldn't exist in a single person," he said.
"Can you find out how it's possible?" Elijah asked.
"I can try do a spell to try to pinpoint her origins. It's the only thing I can think of, but it might not work, given everything she is. I'll need a few drops of blood," Jonas said.
"Do it," Elena said immediately before extending her hand again.
Elijah grabbed ahold of her arm to stop her. He wasn't sure he trusted Jonas any longer. He could already tell what Jonas thought of Elena. He had flat out said that she shouldn't exist.
"I'm not going to do her any harm, Elijah. Even if I wanted to, I know what it would cost me. I just want to find out how this is possible. I want to know as much as you do," Jonas said. He wanted to know because he wanted to make sure this never happened again. He might not be able to hurt Elena because of what he needed from Elijah, but he wanted to find out about her so he could make sure she was the only one of her kind. The girl was an abomination.
"Please, Elijah. I need to know what's happening to me," Elena said in a shaky tone.
Reluctantly, Elijah let go of her arm and nodded his consent.
Jonas picked up a knife and pricked Elena's finger. He placed it into a bowl before adding some other herbs. He then began chanting over and over again. Around the third time, the lights started to flicker. Images then appeared in his head. Images of a time long before this one. He saw a woman who looked much like Elena, only in more outdated clothing. He could only guess that it was Katerina Petrova. He also saw another woman. Then he saw a baby, as well as another woman, likely a witch, as she was chanting.
Jonas opened his eyes moments later and looked at Elijah. "I didn't see much, and I couldn't make sense of it, but one thing that stood out was Katerina Petrova."
"Katerina is one of Elena's ancestors. It makes sense that you'd see her," Elijah said.
"I don't think so. I also saw a baby that I think was Elena, but it was from centuries ago. Like I said, I can't make much sense of it, but I think you'll be able to get more answers from Katerina Petrova," Jonas said.
"Well, that's unfortunate, as I have no idea where Katerina is," Elijah said.
"I do," Elena said.
Elijah turned to her in surprise.
"She's locked in the tomb in Mystic Falls," Elena said.
Elijah smiled slightly. "Then we should greet her. Unless you'd prefer to wait. It is getting late."
Elena shook her head. She was barely keeping herself from falling apart with everything she'd learned. She couldn't go even the night without finding out what had happened to her. "I can't wait. The tomb is under a barrier spell. We can't get in without getting stuck there."
"I can remove the spell. I can follow you there," Jonas said.
"You will remove the spell and then leave immediately," Elijah said firmly. He didn't trust Jonas enough to let him be privy to whatever Katerina had to say.
Jonas sighed but nodded.
Elijah stood up and led Elena towards the exit.
