Chapter 36
Heaven Is Waiting
September 10th
Fay woke with a start, shooting up in bed she struggled to catch her breath. Paul sat up on the other side of the bed. He rubbed sleep from his eyes as they adjusted to the morning light. Fay wiped at the tears that ran down her cheeks.
"Another nightmare?" He asked. It had been over three weeks since Fay worked out, she was human. The nightmares had set in that first week. She had told Paul bits and peaces from them. Some were old, similar to the ones she use to have when she lived with her father. Others were new, involving cold ones.
"Sorry," Fay whispered, pulling her legs up to her chest. She wrapped her arms around them, holding herself tightly.
"It's okay, did you want to talk about it?" Paul asked. He was worried about her, as was the rest of the pack. Being human again seemed to be taking a toll on her. She felt sick or tired most days. She was cold all the time and lost her appetite. The nightmares also stopped her from getting a full night's sleep and any proper rest. Paul had only gotten in from night patrol in the early hours of the morning and Fay had tossed and turned constantly.
"It's not real," she said. Paul wasn't sure if she was talking to him or to herself.
"Fay it's okay, you're safe here," he said softly. Paul reached out slowly wrapping an arm around her. She stiffened for a second before leaning into him. She was freezing to the touch.
"You shouldn't sleep here. I keep waking you," Fay said, her voice barely a whisper.
"Don't worry about me." He pressed a kiss to the top of her head. "Sleep is overrated anyways. As long as I have coffee, I'm all good."
"Coffee isn't the same as sleep Paul. You're running all night then get an hour or two sleep before I wake you. Maybe you should stay in one of the other rooms," she suggested. Letting go of her legs and snuggling into his side.
"No, I'm good right here," he said, laying back down with Fay resting her head on his bare chest. She closed her eyes, listening to the beating of his heart. She savoured his warmth. It didn't matter how many blankets she had or layers she wore, nothing warmed her like Paul did.
"How was patrol?" She asked.
"Good. Nothing to report," Paul said trying to hold back a yawn.
"See, you're tired," she hissed.
"I have plenty of energy, don't stress about that Fay." His fingers slipped under her shirt, gracing the soft skin of her stomach. She shivered at his touch looking up at him.
They were about to kiss when a howl ripped through the air. Paul said a mix of curses under his breath as he pulled away from her. He ran for the room leaving Fay alone. Fay laid back on the bed. She fought the urge to run to the howl. She wanted to know what was happening. But now she had to wait for someone to update her on whatever was going on out there. Paul didn't return until hours later. Fay had paced the house a hundred times waiting for his return. As soon as she saw him exit the tree line, she raced outside to meet him.
"What happen?" She asked.
"Get inside, it's too cold out here," Paul said ushering her back inside.
"Paul what's going on?" Fay asked.
"Seth and Leah left the pack. They have gone to Jake and are helping him protect the Cullen's." He couldn't believe his own words.
"He's back, protecting them?" Fay asked, shocked. There had been now sign of Jacob in the past weeks. No one knew where he had been hiding. "Why did Seth and Leah leave?"
"Seth caught Jacob's scent; Leah just followed her brother. It seems like they have split from the pack. We can't hear them anymore. Apparently, Bella is pregnant," Paul said, a flash of anger in his eyes.
"What!" Fay asked, her jaw dropping.
"It gets crazier. Her bloodsucker boyfriend is the father, and she is still human," Paul explained.
"That's impossible," Fay said, unsure how that could happen.
"It's a monster. That's what it is." Paul growled.
"What's the plan?" Fay asked.
"Sam wants us to be ready to attack as soon as he gives the signal." Paul sat down next to Fay, dropping an arm over her shoulder. "I'm going to start doing afternoon patrols so I can be here with you at night."
"No, you don't have to do that," she said turning to look at him.
"Sam asked me too. Everyone is worried about you so please don't fight this." She opened her mouth to speak but shut it again. "Why don't you go to Emily's this afternoon, I can pick you up at the end of shift."
"Do I get a say in this?" Fay asked.
"It will be good for you to get out of the house and have some girl time." Paul said. He really just didn't want to leave her alone. Not now he knew Jacob was back in the area.
"Okay, I guess I haven't seen Emily in a while. Fuck I can't believe Bella is pregnant." Fay said still not able to wrap her mind around the idea. "Pregnant." Red flags waved in her mind.
"Yeah, it's crazy. That thing isn't a baby though. It will be a danger to everyone," Paul said. He couldn't wait for Sam to give the go ahead. No one was safe until that thing was dead. If he got to have a go at Jacob as well, that would just be a plus.
…
"Emily?" Fay whispered part way through their marathon of friend's. They were both spread out over the couches.
"Yeah?" Emily said snacking on a warm brownie.
"I think I'm pregnant," Fay said casually, as though she had just asked Emily to turn off a light. Emily dropped her brownie. Her head whipping around, eyes wide.
"What! Are you sure?" Emily asked.
"Well, I haven't taken any test but it's that, or some kind of illness that only effects me in the morning or after I smell coffee." Fay said. It hadn't occurred to her until Paul mentioned Bella's pregnancy and things started standing out to her.
"Shit. I don't have any test. I'll call Kim to buy some," Emily jumped up going to get her phone. Fay continued to watch the show. She didn't know how to feel about her situation and just wanted to stay calm until she knew for sure. Kim arrived a little while later, caring a shopping bag full of little boxes.
"I brought a few of each. I wasn't sure what brand was best," Kim said dropping the bag on the table. Emily raced to the table; she hadn't been able to sit still since she got off the phone. Emily looked through the bag at all the different brands. She started reading the instructions on the back of one of the boxes. Fay walked over picking up the first box she saw and headed upstairs to the bathroom. The girls waited patiently for her to come back out. Fay returned a short while later, a white stick in hand. She had read the instructions as she waited for the results. But any blind person could see the solid two bright pink lines. "Positive." Fay said, not sure what to do next.
"It could be faulty," Emily said, not sounding confident though.
"You take one then," Fay said. Emily grabbed a box and went to the bathroom only to return ten minutes later having a similar look on her face to Fay.
"This one's positive as well," Emily whispered. A small ray of hope lifted in Fay's chest for a second. Kim grabbed a box racing up to the bathroom.
"This one is negative," she said on her return.
"We need more tests, and juice," Emily declared. Tossing another box to Fay.
…
The girls gathered in the bathroom, all tired of going up and down the stairs.
"I don't believe it," Emily whispered staring down at her fourth positive pregnancy test. Fay stopped at three tests, all had quick clear responses of positive.
"Well either I keep grabbing the tests that work, or both of you are pregnant," Kim declared. "Who's going to tell Sam?"
"Oh my god," Emily said as the news really sunk in.
"It makes sense now," Fay said looking at her reflection.
"What makes sense?" Kim asked.
"The reason I stopped phasing. I was pregnant, my body wouldn't let me phase any more because of it." Fay said, understanding what had happened.
"You stopped phasing before you got with Paul though?" Kim said.
"This isn't Paul's baby." Fay said, hating the sound of her words.
"Oh," Kim said as realisation hit her.
"Anyone home?" A voice called from downstairs.
They all looked at one another for a second before throwing the dozen test and boxes into the bin. Emily tucked it under the sink, hiding the evidence out of sight. They exited the bathroom quickly going downstairs. All the remaining La Push pack were there, Sam, Paul, Jared, Embry and Quil. The pack looked small now Leah and Seth were gone.
"What were you girls up too?" Sam asked, pulling some drinks out of the fridge.
"I was just showing the girls how I want to move the furniture around in our room," Emily replied. Sam gave her a questioning look but didn't say anything.
"Okay," he said, popping the top off a beer.
"No one is on patrol?" Fay asked.
"Pizza is ordered. We will go back out after that," Quil said, flopping back on a couch.
"Awesome," Emily smiled. The girls tried to relax and act normal, but the room felt off. Kim sat with Jared at the table telling him about the morning she had at school. Emily fluttered around the kitchen putting away the baking supplies she had been using earlier in the day. Sam lent on the counter sipping his beer, trying to work out what was off about his imprint. Fay sat on the couch and Paul dropped down next to her. Quil was kicked back on the other couch and Embry… Embry was missing. Fay had a bad feeling as she heard hurried steps coming down the stairs.
Embry jogged downstairs a stupid grin on his face. Like he had just found a diamond he held the positive pregnancy test up high in the air. "Who's pregnant?" Embry asked. They had apparently not gotten rid of all the tests. The room went silent, all air being sucked out of it. Sam's eyes snapped to Fay until Emily tugged on his arm.
"We're going to have a baby," she squealed, and his face melted to one of pure happiness. He picked Emily up spinning her around in the air. Fay caught Paul's eyes locked on her. He lent in close putting his lips to her ear.
"Can we talk?" Paul asked. She nodded and Paul took her hand, pulling her away from the excitement and outside. He didn't stop until they were definitely out of ear shot of everyone inside.
"You're pregnant," Paul said, no question in his voice.
"Yeah, Emily is as well though, she's not lying. Kim isn't, she was the control group to be sure the test wasn't faulty." Fay said, looking around as though she had never seen the forest before.
"I don't care about them Fay," Paul said putting a hand on her cheek and making her look at him. "I care about you."
"It's likely not yours Paul," she whispered.
"Are you okay though?" He asked, staring deep into her eyes.
"As okay as I can be," she nodded.
"We will work this out Fay, okay?" He brushed a tear from her cheek. She let out a shaky breath falling into his arms. She broke down as the emotions took over. He held her tightly, never wanting to let go.
Authors notes***
I think the fast written chapters are the best ones. I had the last part of this chapter dot pointed but the rest has only been written today. I was on the fence about this idea, I wasn't sure if I wanted to make Fay pregnant or not. I would like to do a story that doesn't involve pregnancy or having kids but I'll just have to try that again in another story. The next chapter is a very bad dot-pointed mess atm, I think i may have to delete it and start again. Please review to keep me motivated and get an update faster.
If anyone was looking for another story to read I recommend The Sister, you can find it in my stories, it's a SamxOC I am loving it and think it gives off similar vibes to this story atm.
