Chapter 37

Heaven Is Waiting

September 11th

Fay sat on the front steps of her brother's house. Paul had gone to get Sam as Fay wanted to tell him the news next. She knew there was no way of keeping her news a secret from the pack. Paul would slip up eventually and that wasn't his fault. Emily and Kim could also only keep a secret for so long. She had to tell him now before someone else could.

"Paul said you wanted to talk to me?" Sam said dropping down next to his sister. A smile had been covering his face since Emily announced her pregnancy. Fay was sure she could make that smile vanish with her own news.

"You said the reason for imprinting could be two things. Either the spirits finding us our perfect mate or the spirits finding us the best mate to produce the strongest fighters with," Fay explained. Sam's face dropped as he tried to understand what she was trying to say.

"Yes," Sam agreed. Not sure what she was getting at.

"I think it's the second one. That's why I imprinted on, Jacob," Fay whispered his name like a course. Sam went silent for a minute as the smile fully dropped off his face.

"Are you trying to tell me you're pregnant?" He asked, not really wanting to hear the answer. He stared at her with wide eyes.

"Yeah," she breathed. Her eyes were glued on the forest, unable to look at her brother. Sam was silent for a moment as he tried to process the information and not overreact.

"Okay. Who's the father? Just so I can make sure to kill the right person," Sam said, turning his own attention to the forest as well. He tried to control his breathing as anger ran through his body.

"I think the pregnancy is the reason I stopped phasing. My body wouldn't let me risk the baby. If I work off that theory, it has to be Jacob's. But I guess that doesn't really matter since he's not here," she said, no emotion left in her voice.

"Well then, he's the one that's going to miss out," Sam said, putting an arm around his sister's shoulders. He wasn't happy about the news, but yelling at her wouldn't solve anything.

"He's definitely picked the wrong side of the boarder," Embry's voice filled the silence. Fay turned to look back at the house. The pack surrounded the doors, all wearing similar looks. She knew they were going to hear the news but seeing them all there made her feel better. She had the support of the pack on her side and that's all she needed. The rest would work it's self out.

September 15th

Fay had been napping until a banging downstairs brought her back to reality. She wasn't sure who would be knocking on the door, everyone always just let themselves in. She pulled her tired body from bed wrapping a blanket around herself before she went downstairs. When she rounded the corner into the living room everything inside her stopped. The blanket slipped from her fingers as her mind went blank. Chief Swan stood on the porch, looking directly at her. He squinted at her long and hard until a wave of recognition washed over his face.

"Fay Uley?" He asked through the glass. Fay was tempted to run, but she wasn't sure where she would be running too. She approached the door slowly. Turning the handle felt like pulling the pin on a grenade.

"Charlie?" She whispered, her voice sounding horse. A cold breeze blew in through the door and a shiver ran through her.

"It's really you. What the hell are you doing out here Fay? Have you been here the whole time?" Charlie demanded. His surprise was quickly turning to irritation and anger. The man hours he had put into her case only to find her so close to home. Looking well cared for and living in a large home she definitely didn't own.

"How did you find this place?" Fay asked. A swell of hatred swirled in her stomach. Only the pack knew of this place, she was sure of that.

"Jake said he needed to meet me, said there was something here I had to see," Charlie explained. Fay felt sick. Jacob hated her enough to give away the one place she felt safe.

"He what?" Fay whispered. She didn't want to believe it, but it made sense.

"You have to come to the station with me," Charlie said grabbing for her hand. Fay jumped away from him.

"No," she said loudly. She looked like a fox caught in a trap. Her large eyes darting in every direction and her mind racing for an idea.

"Fay, we have been looking for you for over two years. There are questions you have to answer," Charlie explained.

"Paul! Paul!" Fay screamed. She knew he would be close by. If he wasn't with her, he was running the boarders by her house to ensure Jacob didn't try crossing. He had clearly found other ways to get to her though. Charlie froze, caught off guard by her screaming. He raised his hands trying to show he meant no harm. Fay's eyes finally landed on something outside the glass doors and Charlie turned to see what had caught her attention. Charlie almost fell over as he saw the large grey wolf just outside the house.

"Holy shit," Charlie cursed, as he reached for his gun.

"Don't shoot him," Fay yelled jumping in front of Charlie. "Paul phase back, I mean it. Trust me." Charlie couldn't understand what she was yelling at the end, non of the words made any sense to him. Charlie pushed her aside just in time to see the horse size wolf shrink back into a man's body. Charlie's eyes almost fell out of his head, and he froze in shock. Paul jogged around to the kitchen and came out of the hallway a moment later with pants on.

"What the hell Fay," he said pulling her to stand behind him. Charlie was still to shocked to do anything.

"He wanted to take me to jail. I needed to show him something to stop him. Jacob sent him here," Fay clung to Paul's arm, a wave of panic almost knocking her off her feet.

"You, you," Charlie stammered looking at Paul.

"Charlie, there are supernatural things in this world humans don't know about. You have to understand that we are not here to hurt anyone. We are only here to protect the tribe." Paul hoped the others weren't far off. He wasn't sure how to explain any of this to Charlie that wouldn't end up with half the tribe in in a loony bin.

"Wolf, you were a wolf? This isn't happening," Charlie shook his head talking to himself.

"Oh, thank fuck you're here," Paul said as Sam and Jared appeared in the doorway.

"Sam, you know about this?" Charlie asked looking up at Sam.

"Charlie we are going to take you to Billy's, he's going to help explain things a bit more," Sam said calmly.

"We can't leave her here with him! He turns into a wolf Sam!" Charlie shouted.

"Charlie, we all do. This has been passed down through generations of the tribe, when our enemies are near, we turn into wolves to help protect the pack. We do not hurt humans, only those who threaten them. Fay is perfectly fine here with Paul, he won't hurt her," Sam said slowly, trying to hold Charlie's eye contact and calm him down.

"Did you know she was here?" Charlie asked.

"Not for a long time Charlie. Everything that happened in those early days was the truth. As much of the truth as I could tell you. When I went missing for those weeks that was the first time I phased into a wolf. I was scared of what happened and had no idea what was going on. It took me a few weeks to be calm enough to turn back to human. We didn't find Fay hear until over a year later. She had run away from home and found this place abandoned. A lot of work has gone into it since then. She's happy here Charlie, safe." Sam said, hoping Charlie would calm down.

"This is crazy," Charlie whispered to himself.

"Yeah, it is. Billy will be able to explain things in better detail," Sam said.

"He's not going to turn into a wolf, is he?" Charlie asked, only half joking.

"No, he's the same old Billy," Sam reinsured, with a smile.

"Okay," Charlie nodded, following Sam out to his cruiser.

"You two good?" Jared asked looking between Paul and Fay.

"Yeah man. I'm going to stick here for a little why. You right with patrol?" Paul asked Jared.

"Take your time, I'll get Quil to help me," Jared nodded before leaving the house. Paul spun around, pulling Fay into his chest.

"It's okay Fay, Charlie isn't going to say anything. Sam's got it under control," Paul whispered, brushing her hair down.

"He told him," she said, in a shaky voice.

"Yeah, he explained some of the things that happened," Paul agreed.

"No Paul, he, Jacob. He told Charlie I was here. Why did he do that?" She asked.

"I don't know Fay, I really don't."

September 16th

Fay was at Emily's house for the day as everyone was out patrolling. Some of the Cullen's had made a run for it in the early hours of the morning. Crossing the boarded to do so. Everyone was on high alert and the imprints were all in one place to make them easier to protect. Fay was exhausted, between nightmares and stress she was unable to get real sleep. Anything she ate came back up shortly afterwards and anything she drank burnt like acid as it went down. She rested on the couch as the other girls prepared lunch. Emily was glowing in the mid morning light that flooded through the windows. Pregnancy seemed to radiate off her. While Fay just felt like this thing was trying to kill her. She shut her eyes trying to let her brain calm down. It was over working, and she knew that wasn't going to help.

Like a well-timed alarm Emily's house phone started ringing just as Fay felt her body start to relax. Emily hurried to answers the phone, but it was too late, Fay was wide awake once more. Fay watched as Emily answered the phone and her face dropped. Emily lowered the phone covering the end of it.

"It's Jacob," she said quietly looking at Fay. "He wants to talk to you." Fay slowly pulled herself off the couch and grabbed the phone off Emily.

"Jacob?" She said unsure her voice was even auditable.

"You're really going to fight me if it comes down to it. Leah and Seth as well?" Jacob asked. His voice sent a shock wave through her.

"No one wants to hurt you, you know that, Jacob. But you're on the wrong side of the boarder, for the wrong reasons," Fay said trying to keep her voice calm.

"I'm standing up for what I believe in," Jacob demanded.

"No, you're standing up for her Jacob. Just her." Fay's voice broke and she held back tears. The sound of his voice pulled at every emotion she had.

"You cheated on me," Jacob yelled so loud Kim could here his voice from her place in the kitchen.

"I know, and I don't regret it. That might make me sound bad but I'm tired Jacob. Tired of all your games. I know you don't mean to hurt me. But you love her, in ways you don't love me." Emily placed a hand on Fay's back. She was tempted to rip the phone away but Fay gripped the phone like it was the last thing holding her to earth.

"But I do love you, Fay. I choose you," Jacob said through gritted teeth.

"It shouldn't have been a decision. When Sam imprinted on Emily it wasn't a choice of who he would pick, it was her and only her. When Quil met Clare, it was just love. Unconditional. Kim and Jared look at one another like they are the only two people in the world. We shouldn't have had to force anything or make choices Jacob. It should have just happened."

"I'm sorry Fay." Fay thought she miss heard his words for a moment until he repeated them a second time. "I'm sorry Fay, for everything you went through."

"Why did you call? How did you even know I was here?" Fay asked.

"Billy told me you weren't patrolling so I assumed you would be with Emily and Kim, keeping an eye on them while the rest of the pack get ready to fight." Fay couldn't understand what he was saying until it dawned on her that Jacob didn't know she was human. She wasn't sure how Leah and Seth hadn't told him about it, maybe they did, and he just didn't believe them. She was more caught off guard by his next words. "I just needed to hear your voice one last time."

"Jacob? Jacob what do you mean?" She asked.

"Regardless of how tonight ends, I'm never going back to La Push." The phone went dead in her hands.

"Jacob, Jacob?" She asked into the phone, even though she knew he was gone.

Author Notes***

I'm very surprised how this chapter went. Definitely didn't stick to my original notes. Kind of freaking out that I can actually see the end of this story, I can't believe it. Once it's all over and done with I am tempted to do a "What If" series where Fay makes a different decision at one point in her life and the different story it takes her on. Not sure how it would work but I don't think I'm ready to let go of Fay yet. She's been with me for eight years, it's hard to just let her go. We are both very different people now and I can see that in my writing style as well. Thanks to all the OG who are still here.
