Well heck. I am very late. We are back on schedule now though. Feel free to ask questions regarding anything related to the story or characters. But until next time!

Weiss pulled on her coat, buttoning it up until it was snug with her body. "Are you sure we won't have to deal with Zeref or Mavis?"
"I already checked with Ms. Goodwitch today," Blake assured her. "They're out on a special assignment for Professor Port."
"That's strangely convenient," Ruby narrowed her eyes, for only a moment. "But it works for us! It probably wouldn't have gone well if Zeref caught us sneaking out to fight criminals."
"Investigate," Weiss corrected. "We are only investigating this."
"But Weiss," Yang pointed out. "Criminals tend to try and kill people in their way. I think some fighting is going to be involved."
"It's in how we say it," the cat fanus explained. "If we do get caught, it's better to be caught investigating rather than fighting."
"Which one of you came up with that?" The blonde brawler looked between Blake and Weiss.
"Actually," the Heiress looked away. "Mavis did."
"I hope they're okay," Zeref yawned. He and Mavis had left early in the morning. So early that the sun hasn't risen yet.
"Team RWBY will be fine," she plucked at the bowstring absentmindedly. "They had you as a teacher."
"I could've been better," he offered. "They only improved so much because you were there to support them. I'm sure Ruby would've walked out on me if it were just me."
"Not everyone learns better from the technical details. Sometimes you have to get hands-on with them."
"Then I guess we make a pretty good team," Zeref summarized. "You sense anything yet?"
"If you haven't, then neither have I," Mavis leaned in. "But what was that about us being a good team?"
Her sudden interest puzzled the Black Wizard. "After a century living together, I thought you would've come to that conclusion too."
"But coming from you–that's something else." she used her bare hands to brush a cluster of bushes away. "How far do you think we can go before the sun goes down?"
Zeref stepped ahead, allowing her room to pass. "Another ten kilometers, if we're lucky and don't encounter any obstacles."
Mavis pressed on. "I meant, how far until we reach Lower Cairn?
At the mention of Lower Cairn, Zeref's expression darkened slightly. "We'll reach it before sundown. Should I attempt contacting them again?"
"If we act now, it might divert Team CFVY's attention from... well, the Grimm," Mavis murmured as they ventured deeper into the woods. "Peter should have already informed them that backup is on the way."
Zeref arched an eyebrow. "Should have?"
Mavis nodded knowingly. "You and I both know how Beacon students can be... inclined to disregard authority."
A smirk tugged at Zeref's lips. "Sounds familiar," he quipped, pushing aside the sorrowful memories.
"Hey!" Mavis playfully shoved him. "It was always Yuri pushing the boundaries with the council, just so you know." Her tone softened, eyes casting downward. "I... miss him. All of them."
He took her hand as they continued to walk. "I know. I miss him too." Even if I never really got to know Natsu. He glanced up. Something was off about the horizon. "There's…smoke in the air."
Mavis's eyes widened in alarm. Without hesitation, she bolted toward the rising plumes, nearly dragging Zeref along. He steadied himself with a quick barrier spell and followed, unsheathing Repentance, one of his knives, as they went.
Despite how minuscule the smoke cloud had first been, it felt like it only took seconds before the forest cleared away to reveal Lower Cairn–or what once was the town. The street stones were scorched black, and buildings were demolished to their foundations. But there weren't any bodies.
Zeref tried scanning the surrounding area for survivors. He could feel at least seven magical signatures under his feet–four familiar.
"Team CVFY," Mavis knelt on the ground. "They have to be in a cave system."
There must have been a few survivors that took refuge underground from the Grimm attack, at least what the report said. "They don't seem to be in immediate danger–Coco's leading them out, but separated from her team."
"She won't be able to effectively use her machine gun if they run into the Death Stalkers that live here." Mavis tried to keep her tone even, but Zeref could feel the waves of anxiety.
"Coco'll be fine." He reassured her. "They're not too deep down."
Nodding, Mavis opened her left hand and began lasering the rocky dirt. Bits of earth were blasted from the increasingly deepening hole, with the stones superheating until it became lava. As she continued to burrow into the ground, Zeref created a cylindrical barrier around the laser beam, increasing its height as more earth was displaced. Then he increased the shield's diameter, widening the hole. Beads of sweat formed on his neck, as the earth was packed increasingly, making it harder to displace. He pushed and pushed and pushed until the opening was big enough to jump down into.
"Team MZ?" A different telepathic voice called out to the Black Wizard.
"Fox," Mavis began, "what's the situation?"
"I could–" Coco interrupted her, "really use some help!"
Mavis stopped drilling into the earth. "I see you, Coco!" Zeref leaned over the freshly carved hole, glimpsing sunlight dancing on the water within the cave below. Coco stood, her weapon gleaming against the rocky backdrop, a stark contrast to the dirt-streaked survivors behind her. Amid them lay the lifeless form of a civilian, blood marring the pristine surface of the water. And looming ahead, was a hulking shadow with eight menacing red eyes. The deathstalker hissed in annoyance when it felt the sunlight on its claws, causing it to scuttle backward into the darkness.
Wasting no time, Zeref jumped into the cave, creating another barrier to block the deathstalker from approaching. "Can you guide them out?" he called to Coco, a jolt of pain shooting through his shoulder as the monster lashed out, assaulting his translucent defense.
Breathing heavily from exhaustion, Coco nodded. "But what about you?"
"We have this!" Mavis called down. "Lead it to the surface."
Zeref tipped his head in acknowledgment, before turning his attention back to the Grimm. The deathstalker had resorted to body-slamming the barrier, causing the shield to lose more and more of its color.
A single laser shot left a burning hole in the scorpion's bony claw. Seizing the opportunity, Zeref dropped his barrier and darted past the Grimm, disappearing into the dimly lit corridor. He could hear the Grimm quickly scuttle after him.
"Team CVFY," Mavis addressed them, "get the survivors onto the Bullhead you came in. We can stall the deathstalker."
"We don't need the whole team to do that," Coco argued. Zeref could hear some of her embarrassment leaking through. As the scuttling got louder, Zeref flicked through the different dusts loaded into his weapon until he landed on Earth. Triggering the release mechanism, the base of Damnation became encrusted in rock. He stabbed it into the rock wall as he ran, quickly removing his weapon as more earth began to rise from the ground, forcing the deathstalker to break down his makeshift wall.
"I don't think a deathstalker is the thing that flattened the town," the Fairy Tactician deduced. "The Grimm might come back."
The Black Wizard squinted at the light illuminating the exit. Bits of rock and dust fell "Mavis, are you at the cave entrance yet?"
"Yes," she replied, her tone almost excited. "Make sure the deathstalker is off balance when it exits the cave." Zeref craned his head back. Sure enough, four pairs of glowing red eyes were quickly approaching his position. Unlike Mavis, he was not excited about this. Zeref unsheathed his second knife–Repentance, and coated it with ice dust. The deathstalker struck with lightning speed, but Zeref parried, the clash of metal igniting sparks in the gloom. Before it could retaliate, he plunged Repentance into the ground, freezing the cavern floor and trapping the creature's legs in ice.
The deathstalker's stinger jabbed at him with lightning speed. Zeref raised the knife-turned sword and deflected it. The sparks of the clash were nearly blinding in the darkness. Sensing another attack imminent, Zeref thrust his ice-coated knife into the ground, transforming the cavern floor into a slick sheet of ice, ensnaring the deathstalker's legs in its freezing grip.
The Grimm's enraged hiss echoed through the cavern, assaulting Zeref's senses. Pain seared through his left ear, blood trickling down as his eardrum burst. With a wince, he sheathed his weapons and raced for the exit, conjuring tiny barriers beneath his feet to navigate the treacherous frozen ground.
Zeref rolled to his feet, relief flooding him as the flow of blood from his ear began to ebb. His right ear had stopped ringing by then but was strangely replaced with thumping. Zeref turned back to see the deathstalker come charging out of the cave.
No, charging wasn't the right word. The Grimm was sliding forward–too quickly for its natural movement. It was moving too fast to stop itself from tripping over a metal tripwire. Almost comically, the deathstalker flew through the air, before landing on its topside, its underbelly exposed. A second later, multiple flaming arrows pierced the scorpion's carapace. The deathstalker gave one final hiss, before disintegrating into black dust.
Still reeling from the encounter, Zeref barely registered Mavis' tackle-hug until she pinned him to the ground. Her voice, muffled in his damaged ear, admonished him gently. "Don't do that again," she muttered into his left ear, ignoring the dried blood still in it.
He was half-tempted to point out that there was no way for either of them to die. "Of course." As they untangled, Zeref attempted to rise, his cheeks flushing with embarrassment at their close proximity. Mavis quickly obliged, helping him to his feet.
"Is the deathstalker gone?" Fox asked them.
The strained tone of Fox's voice instantly troubled the Black Wizard. "Is something wrong?"
"That Grimm Mavis thought might come back," Fox answered "It came back."
"Did he mention it was a Goliath?" Coco nearly shouted. "Because that's pretty important!"
Without hesitation, Zeref and Mavis broke into a run, their hearts pounding with anticipation. "Where is i–" Zeref was cut off by the hulking black mass that stepped out from a cluster of trees. Emerging from the shadows, a colossal black mass lumbered into view, its thunderous roar shaking the earth beneath them. Near its feet, Velvet and Yatsuhashi struggled to hold it back from the waiting Bullhead.
"I think I found it," Mavis muttered under her breath.
"Shut up and run." Zeref pulled her along as he raced toward Team CFVY.
Mavis quickly caught up to his sudden sprint–albeit slowed by her bare feet. "How are you two faring?" she called out to Velvet and Yatsuhashi.
"Could be better!" Velvet shouted back, deftly evading the attacks of two ursai with her hard light-dust knives. Zeref noted the flickering of her aura, indicating she was sustaining damage.
Meanwhile, Yatsuhashi engaged in a fierce battle with the towering Grimm, using his massive cleaverlike blade to parry its tusks and roll out of harm's way. But exhaustion was evident in his movements.
As the Goliath prepared to strike, Zeref acted instinctively, creating a shield beneath its head to prevent a devastating blow. Straining under the weight, he held the barrier steady, allowing Yatsuhashi to retreat safely.
Zeref dropped to one knee as he struggled to keep his barrier up, as the elephant leaned more of its weight to pierce the glowing white barrier. Luckily for him, Yatsuhashi had retreated away from the Goliath.
"Go help your partner," Mavis unshouldered her bow, knocking a dust round, and aimed at one of the Grimm's four legs.
"But–" the Mistrali began.
"No, they're right." Coco stepped in. "Our priority is to get these people out of here. And I'd rather we not fuck it up more than I already did."
"We can come back for them after," Velvet answered.
Zeref tuned out the debate, focusing on maintaining his barrier. The strain was taking its toll, the light flickering as the Goliath exerted more pressure.
Mavis squeezed his shoulder reassuringly. "Release the barrier in three, two, one." He let his shield drop. However, all the force the Goliath had built up had to go somewhere. And it went to help tip the elephant forward ever so slightly. Mavis took this opportunity to let her dust arrow fly. It landed in the dirt under the Goliath. Zeref fought back the urge to ask how Mavis had missed.
Because she hadn't. A stone pillar erupted from the ground, slamming into the Goliath's undefended belly. It let out another roar, turning away from the Bullhead. Toward them.
"You lured it away from the students," Zeref tried to stay positive. The stomping of the Goliath got louder. Mavis gulped slightly.
Normally, the two of them could handle one Goliath on their own–but only when they could use magic. But just with their Semblances? That was going to be tough.
"We'll need to get it off its feet," The Fairy Tactician stated the obvious. "I'll freeze the left leg."
The Black Wizard nodded. "I'll go for the right leg."
"Are you sure?" Mavis frowned. "Your Aura's dangerously low. I can stall it for long enough for you to recover." Zeref was caught off guard by the question. Why was Mavis asking–
"You'll have help," Coco interrupted his thought process. "I'm sending in Yatsuhashi and Fox." Oh. The students. Right.
"Fox, I'm going to need to distract the Goliath." Mavis directed him. On cue, bullets sparked against the elephant's bony face, causing it to slow its charge.
Mavis shot out arrow after arrow in rapid succession. As they made contact with the Grimm's feet, the limb was encased in ice. The Goliath stumbled, taking a few seconds to find its footing.
Zeref pieced together Mavis's plan. "Yatsuhashi, get the other leg." The Mistrali sword wielder charged forward, sword held at his waist. Just before reaching the Grimm, Yatsuhashi dug his right foot into the churned-up dirt and swung forward. The bronze blade cleaved straight through the elephant's thick leg. The black flesh flopped onto the ground quickly dissolving into black ash.
The monster trumpeted in pain, swinging its head around at lightning speed, whacking Yatsuhashi high into the air. His forest green Aura flickered before breaking into tiny dust particles. Zeref's eyes flickered quickly to Mavis. She was tensing up, her hand already instinctively moving to collapse her bow.
That…isn't good. Zeref acted without hesitation, drawing Damnation—the longer blade offering him more leverage against the Goliath's tusks.
"Wait, Zeref–" Mavis tried to stop him, but he slipped from her grasp. Fox had stopped firing at the elephant to catch his teammate. But before Zeref could intervene, the Goliath broke free from the ice, its movements awkward and unsteady. Zeref darted beneath the monster, driving his blade into its underbelly, tearing a gaping wound through its flesh. However, the now shortened foot caused the elephant to move very awkwardly. It stumbled as it tried to advance toward the two members of Team CFVY.
Zeref ran under the Goliath and stabbed his extended blade into the elephant's underbelly, slicing a large gash through the cold flesh. Just as he pulled his sword from the elephant's body, the Black Wizard was yanked off his feet by the Goliath's trunk.
He tried to anchor himself to the ground using his sword, but the Grimm held him up in the air. Zeref reached for the black trunk wrapped tightly around his ankle and retracted his sword blade.
But before he was able to free himself, the Goliath lifted him into the air again. What was it trying to–
With a sickening crack, the Goliath slammed Zeref into the ground, filling his world with pain and despair. He only distantly registered the cracking noise–probably from his bones. But he wasn't sure. Yet, even as darkness threatened to overtake him, a surge of energy pulsed through him, and he felt something shift within. That's strange. It's not like I'm going to die from this.
The Black Wizard slowly opened his eyes, observing as the Goliath towered over him, eyes boring down on him.
Zeref's right hand emitted a black mist, surprising both himself and the monster. Before he could comprehend what was happening, a blur of pink and white collided with the Grimm's head, sending it reeling.
"Mavis…" Zeref tried pushing himself up. His body screamed at the effort–with blood welling under his skin. His arm collapsed from the weight of his body. All he could do was watch.
And pray.
Red.
That was all Mavis could see.
In a swift motion, she unhooked the metal hilt she had hanging on her belt and ignited the blade with her Semblance. A dark, crackling blade emerged from the exhaust end. Mavis didn't notice at the time that the blade, rather than emitting a soft glow, was pitch black, almost as if it was sucking in the light around it.
She sliced one of the Goliath's tusks clean off, watching the pointed end embed itself into the softened earth. But even, then, the elephant was still standing. In its weakened state, the Grimm directed its baleful red eyes toward her.
So the Fairy Tactician jumped off the side of the detached tusk and sank her blade into the left eye. The Goliath let out a final roar if muted, before slowly decomposing into dust. Mavis let her hands go limp, deactivating her Semblance along with it.
She staggered toward her dear Spriggan, who lay motionless on the ground. His skin had patches of blood red everywhere, and she could see bones pressed against the skin as if they were straining against a plastic bag. Sinking to her knees, she took one of his battered and bruised hands. Sinking to her knees, she took one of his battered hands.
"Why…" Mavis choked on the unfinished question, tears mingling with the droplets falling onto their intertwined hands.
Zeref moved his other hand to grab hers. "I've come to understand that if I didn't go after them, the kids–" he tilted his head slightly toward the two students approaching them before wincing.
"Don't move," she chided gently, her heart aching at his pain. "Don't worsen your injuries."
"You would've," he finished. "And I…don't wish to see you in pain."
That filled Mavis with an overwhelming feeling of anger. The grass around them turned an unhealthy yellow. "Did you not think for a second that I might not want to see you like this? That it might hurt me more than whatever the Goliath might've done to me?" She had to get a hold of herself. "We'll…save this for later."
She turned her attention back to the half of Team CVFY. The two teens had strangely slowed their pace while approaching them. They must've noticed that Zeref and I were sharing an intimate moment. Then again, Fox was struggling to keep his much taller teammate walking.
"Is Zeref…?" The Vacuo native gingerly gestured to the former Spriggan Emperor, now a bruised and bloody mess.
"He's going to be fine," was all Mavis was willing to let herself say. "Are you holding up?"
"Feel tired," Yatsuhasi grunted, his exhaustion evident in every strained breath. "You need help getting Zeref to the Bullhead?"
That was the moment Zeref chose to sit up, his movements slow and pained. "Don't bother. Mavis and I aren't going to be returning to Beacon with you just yet."
Fox furrowed his eyebrows in confusion. "But—"
"It's a little more complicated than that," Fairy Tail's first master interjected, looping an arm over Zeref's shoulder to help him stand. His familiar scent of decay, with a hint of pine needles underneath, settled over her. "We were already traveling in this direction before Professor Port asked the two of us to help you guys. The headmaster gave us a task."
Yatsuhasi nodded. "Classified?"
Mavis nodded. "Unfortunately."
Fox sighed. "Guess it can't be helped. Let's get going then, Yatsu."
"Good luck, then, Team MZ," the Mistrali sword wielder offered a smile before walking with Fox toward the hovering Bullhead.
"That was strange," Zeref remarked as he eased himself off Mavis's shoulder, though he kept his hand tightly clasped around hers. "To be referred to by our team name."
"This technically was our 'first' mission, right?" she pointed out, a wry smile playing at the corners of her lips. "You wanna call it a night?"
"Let's get away from the town first," he suggested, his voice tinged with weariness. "I don't believe either of us would get sleep so close to… that." He gestured toward the burnt ruins of the town, the memory of the chaos and destruction still fresh in their minds.
As they slowly retreated into the forest, the adrenaline that had fueled them through the ordeal began to ebb away, leaving behind a bone-deep weariness.
They walked in silence for a while, the only sounds the rustling of trees and the occasional scurrying of small creatures. The dense foliage enveloped them, offering a sense of solace amidst the lingering turmoil.
"Hey, Zeref," Mavis began after a while, her voice soft. "If you're going to do something that reckless again, at least let me come with you?"
He turned his head, a sad smile on his face. "Okay. Together."
They didn't stop walking until the sun went down. By that point, the pair had already reached the port town of Rushmere. Bewildered, Mavis pulled out (her now ancient) scroll. The GPS confirmed that they had crossed all of Vale in two days.
What. The. Heck.
"When you're walking through the forest," Zeref offered, "You tend to lose track of how you've walked until you stop."
"When you're walking through the forest," Zeref mused, a hint of amusement in his voice, "you tend to lose track of how far you've gone until you stop."
"That doesn't explain everything, though," Mavis argued, though her fatigue was beginning to catch up with her. "We would've needed to be moving at a ridiculously fast pace."
He shrugged, his movements sluggish with exhaustion. "Let's find somewhere to spend the night. But first, could you…"
She sighed and twisted her wedding ring, summoning a trace of her magical power to weave a simple illusion. She suppressed a giggle when she saw Zeref do a double take.
Mavis had been stuck at five foot and two inches for most of her life. So gaining an extra four inches in height would definitely shock Zeref. But she somehow found it funny every time.
Mavis pulled him along, toward the metal gate of the town. It had a simple design, with a set of doors probably locked by a thick deadbolt on the other side. Sitting on top of Rushmere's walls was a lone sentry, probably posted to warn the townspeople of any oncoming Grimm attacks.
She watched him nearly jump in surprise.
"Uh, how are you?" the sentry called out. "And what are you two doing out here?"
"We're huntsmen," the Black Wizard found his voice. "We were hoping to spend the night here?"
The sentry furrowed his brow. "I'm going to need to see some identification. Give me a moment." He disappeared from view.
Mavis opened her Huntsman license, courtesy of Ozpin. It had taken a lot of pushing by both her and Zeref to get the old headmaster to grant them special licenses.
Zeref pointed out the obvious that leaving the date of when the license was issued unchanged would raise a lot of questions about the validity of the card–especially given how young both of them physically were.
The metal gate creaked open, with the sentry poking his head out, nervously looking out into the rapidly darkening woods. "Your licenses?"
Mavis walked over, holding up her Scroll. The sentry spent a minute scrutinizing the photo. Sweat gathered on her palms. Had she messed up her illusion or something?
Without missing a beat, Zeref swapped their scrolls and handed his to Mavis. She held it out to the sentry, her heart pounding in her chest.
After what felt like an eternity, the sentry returned their scrolls. "There's an inn in the middle of town," he said, his voice softer now, tinged with concern. "The owner only takes hard lien."
"Thank you," Mavis nodded gratefully, a sense of relief washing over her.
"Just, look out for each other, alright?" the sentry added, his gaze lingering on them. "I hate to see either of your lives get cut short."
"We'll keep it in mind," Zeref replied, his voice filled with genuine warmth. "Thank you, again." The pair slipped inside the metal gate. The dirt quickly morphed into cobbled streets, with one to two-story homes lining both sides. They were made of a mixture of clay and stone, with wooden support beams visible from the outside. Not many people were out, but the ones who were would stop and stare at the bow on Mavis's back.
"I think we're here." He raised a hand to point at the only three-story building in the town, which was now just down the road. An old-fashioned wooden sign hung from an overhang. It read 'The Blue Bottle'.
Inside, Mavis, found that the main floor was, predictably, a restaurant and bar, with a lone figure standing behind the bar counter.
"You two need a room?" the feminine voice didn't look up from her book.
That's a little rude. "Yes, mam," she replied hesitantly. "Just for a night."
"That'll be 1400 lien," the innkeeper told them. Mavis reached for her wallet, only to see a flurry of multi-colored cards land in a neat pile. She turned to see her husband pocketing his remaining cash, letting out a silent laugh.
"Did you really have to do that?" she lightly elbowed him.
"Hey, kid," the stranger put down their book. They wore a lavender tunic with a white ribbon wrapped around her neck. "Catch." Mavis saw the sparkle of metal before grabbing the key from out of the air. "Your room's up the stairs and the last door to the left."
Exchanging a glance with Zeref, the two of them came to a conclusion.
"We should just head upstairs."
Mavis stretched as she exited the small freshener attached to the room, wearing nothing but a dark gray blouse. She flopped on the bed, allowing her head to sink into the pillow of the one bed in the room. The innkeeper must've guessed their marital status. That was the only way Mavis could rationalize the odd choice of room.
The lights to the room shut off, only leaving the soft gray moonlight to illuminate her face. She watched as Zeref moved to join her. Mavis felt something press onto the mattress. She felt around for a few seconds to clasp Zeref's left hand with her own.
Can we talk about what we're doing tomorrow?" she whispered softly.
"I suppose we should," he let out a deep breath. "We'll need to procure a boat to get to Anima, then sail down the south coast. She promised to keep the tribe there until we visited again."
Mavis leaned to face her Spriggian in the dark. "Are you sure Raven is going to do that? It's been long enough since we went–long enough that she had to move the tribe."
"I would try and have more faith in her." Despite the darkness, Zeref's onyx eyes shone with an unnatural light. "She is family, is she not?"
"Fair," Mavis rubbed her eyes. "Knowing her, she probably some poor bandit to camp on the coast until we get there."
He let out a small laugh. "I suppose you taught her well."
"Hey," she protested. "I never taught her to do that. If anything, you were more likely, given that you acted as king for most of a continent." Then she yawned. It had been a long day.
"Go to sleep, my Fairy," Zeref told her. Too tired to argue, Mavis closed her eyes.
"So, who do we have here?" Raven stood over the cage the tribe had managed to build out of some of the scrap they'd managed to scrounge up from some of their raids. Inside, a young, teenage girl sat with her knees pulled close to her chest. She had long brown hair, tied up with a pair of red ribbons into long pigtails. She was wearing an orange dress that didn't cover her shoulders but rather looped around her neck to stay on. The fabric had multiple tears, scratches, and stains.
Black leggings covered the rest of her body, with brown hiking boots on her feet.
"Say what you want," Vernal retorted. "That girl gave me some nasty burns before I managed to subdue her."
Raven's interest piqued. A Semblance user? This just became more intriguing.
Kneeling to meet the captive's gaze, Raven inquired, "What's your name, kid?"
The girl didn't say anything for a few moments, flinching a little when they made eye contact. What was scaring her so much? Hesitantly, Raven took off her mask, briefly relishing in the slow breeze that cooled off her face. "Look, are you going to answer the question or sit in there and rot?"
"You remind me of some I met," The girl looked up, her olive eyes meeting Raven's red. "It's Zera."
