The sequel to the previous chapter (Archer et Alter, I call it) will come out soon. This chapter's idea has been floating around my head ever since I started writing this fanfic. Right now, I just can't let this thought go unwritten.
The story?
Archer duels the Artoria faces after the whole 'Saber Wars' trend came about. Basically Star Wars x Fate.
Now let's get to it.
—
Archer was walking around Chaldea with a calmness not seen in a while. The whole debacle about the Saber Wars event that happened recently has caught him in many stressful circumstances. Most of them having to do with either fighting for his life, or being thrashed around by 'the Force' which was actually just powerful prana blasts from the children prancing around either as Jedi or Sith. It was fun for a while. Until it came to light that the Children who participated did not get the whole point of the event and were just happily causing mayhem and destruction with their fancy laser swords. Or lightsabers as they call it. And let's not get started with the debate on whether or not lightsabers are actual swords. The terrible trio in Jack, Nursery, and Jeanne Lily had proven that it was. And poor Cu Chulainn found out the hard way.
Let's just say that his new 'cosplay arm' from Da Vinci will stay long after the event until Master Gudako could get around actually commanding the stump to heal.
"Hah! Hyah! Hah!"
"Hm?" Archer was removed from his musings by the sound he heard down the hall. It was the training facility. A lot of people came here to train with the lightsabers made by Da Vinci for the duelling competition set up as one of the main shows of the event. That duelling tournament was the same reason why he had to fight tooth and nail to keep his limbs in the first place, by the way. It was encouraged for the child servants to have them since 'it was fun and cool'. But when things become rowdy in a cafeteria filled with immature servants quick and impulsive, what do you think would happen?
And so, with the most needed Command Seal to set it in stone, it was decided that the only place for the lightsabers are allowed to be used are in the training facilities. A place that Archer avoided with great lengths. He walked past the open door to see Saber Lily practising her katas with her lightsaber. That lightsaber was of beautiful make, if Archer was honest. Designed with the knowledge that it was a budding sword fighter who would be its wielder. It had smooth curves to match the grip of its user. Not too complicated but just enough to have optimal grip. If it weren't for his near death experiences with the blasted thing, Archer would have taken the time to talk to Da Vinci about it. To take a lesson or two on its inner workings just for interest's sake.
Speaking of its wielder. Saber Lily was wearing the given costume for the event. A 'Padawan's Garb' as they called it. It was pure white. Just like Lily, actually. It was breathable and loose enough for unhindered combat. It was not armoured in any way, for it was made to suit a beginner's tastes. It looked… decent on Lily, to be frank. It reminded Archer of a person he once knew. Who wore a kendo uniform just as white as the garb before him. And he remembered that she looked as… decent in it as Lily is now.
"Archer-senpai! It's good to see you today." Saber Lily beamed as she skipped her way towards the bowman. Crud, he had been standing there way longer than he thought. "Have you come to try out the lightsabers?"
"Hello, Lily. And to answer, no I'm afraid not. I just caught sight of you practising and found it a little interesting. But not enough to try, I'm afraid." Archer answered. Internally, he kind of regretted what he said as he watched the visible deflation on the Saber servant's face.
"Are you even free right now to help me out?" the bowman offered. And just like that, the light burned ever brighter in Lily's eyes. He couldn't help but chuckle at the sight as she started dragging him into the facility and explained the many types of lightsabers in the facility. Now that he thought about it. It's nice to see that the room is still functioning well enough to shift into different sceneries. Just earlier they were in the stone castle of Camelot. Now, they were in the training grounds of the Jedi temple. Nice to know Da Vinci's mechanical droids (disguised as R2 units milling about the place) are in top shape even now with all the destruction made by the lightsabers. Right now, they were in front of a gallery of lightsabers. Quite the sight to behold.
"So there are many kinds of lightsabers here. But the ones you need to remember are regular lightsabers, double edged lightsabers, pikesabers, and shotos. A lot of the Lancer class in the competition use the double edged and pikesabers while the Sabers use the regular ones. I only saw Jack use the shoto since she's an assassin. But what will you pick, Archer-senpai?" Lily asked expectantly. The bowman was a special case since few of the Archer class that weren't child servants ever came here to see the lightsabers. Much less spar with her. Gil-kun didn't really like it while the older versions just humoured her without actually caring to be serious about it. At least her older selves like it, even if they didn't really seem to go all out with her too. Hopefully Archer is different. He seems to take it into consideration.
"I'll try the regular lightsabers first. I'll try the shoto next time." Lily heard Archer say. And with that, she did not hesitate to teach the bowman the next step.
"Great! Now just lift your hand, and the sabers will come to you. You can have two since you're great with dual wielding." Lily explained.
"Lift my hand? I can- woah!" Archer looked towards the gallery and did as requested of him. What he did not expect were two lightsaber hilts flying towards him. With quick reflexes, he managed to catch the two with both hands.
"Oh! I forgot to explain, I'm really sorry." Lily said apologetically as she waved the gallery away. "Miss Da Vinci had prana sensors installed in the weapons so that it would activate when they detect the specific signature of the servant calling for it. What you have there is what Miss Da Vinci made for you."
"I see…" Archer said as he examined the lightsabers before him. They bore the same colour scheme of his go to weapons: Kanshou and Bakuya. One was red and black, while the other was white with accents. He ignited them and was curious with the color choice. Gold and Blue. Like Excalibur.
He will talk to Da Vinci about this later.
"You can change the colors of the lightsabers in the settings at the hilt. The colors come from the default that Miss Da Vinci had set in place." Lily explained as she ignited her own lightsaber and fiddled with the settings she was talking about. From the sunshine yellow it was before the color became titanium white.
Yep. He will definitely talk to Da Vinci soon.
"Alright. Give me a second." Archer said as he started changing them to black and white. It's like he's holding Kanshou and Bakuya now. Except they're longer deadlier laser swords.
"Excellent! Now we can begin." Lily said with a snap of her fingers. With that snap, the training grounds before them formed a big ring that encircled them both.
"The rules are simple. Go outside the line and you're out. Disarming is two points while knockdown is 3 points. The first to 10 points wins. You can use any of the Seven Lightsaber forms but turning the lightsaber off at any point during the match is a disqualification." Lily then assumed the form she was training with the entire time - Form I, Shi Cho. The basic introductory form for learning how to wield lightsabers the first time. But Archer's keen eyes can see some hints of another form in her stance. It appears that Lily was branching out to other forms at this point. But which one?
"Knowing how dangerous lightsabers can be. How can I be sure that I wouldn't be able to accidentally cut myself while swinging these things?" Archer asked as he also assumed his own form. Lily didn't say that he can't use any other forms outside of the 7. So he'll just wing it and use the stance that he's used to.
"The lightsabers are designed to not harm their own wielders. Miss Da Vinci did not quite explain it to me. But she said that getting hit by my own lightsaber will just sting me. But when you stab someone else with it, the same happens with the feeling of it being much more intense." Lily then touched her lightsaber and then flinched when she felt an electrical shock after the fact. But she wasn't burned or dismembered by it.
"Okay." Archer then dialled in and became serious. "We can start now." Lily couldn't help but waver at the sight of the man. But she was a little bit happy. He wouldn't let her off easy. And that's what she needs to improve.
The duel began in earnest. Lily being the first to strike. She wanted to disarm Archer, so his arms became her target. It was hard to keep her offensive up because Archer had two sabers and a defensive stance that can easily be transformed into a counterattack. Just like Form V, Djem So. She did not stay in the offensive for long as Archer's attack came around after she lost balance with her lateral swing towards the bowman's right arm.
Archer did not want to just disarm Lily, but also knock her down. So he was aggressive in his attack. His targets were Lily's torso and thighs because it would be easier to take her down that way than just exhausting her to surrender. And it was here that Archer saw the other Form Lily was trying to master. Form III, Soresu. Her defence is simply yet effective. Perfect for countering heavy onslaughts without the need to expend unneeded energy. Every thrust he made was expertly swatted away while his swings were quickly parried. He couldn't help but smirk when he stopped the attack and stepped back to give her some breathing room. Lily was starting to be just as good as her older selves. She had that classic focused glare to boot. He couldn't help but remember her as he watched Lily regain her bearings.
"You did well, Lily." Archer complimented.
"Hah… hah… Thank you… that was intense…" Lily drawled out as she fell to the floor. She wasn't exhausted. Just overwhelmed. There was a very good reason why the rest of them were holding back, Lily realised. They weren't even duelling for more than 6 minutes, yet her knees gave out under her. That was… a lot to handle right now.
"You are improving. If you keep this up, you'll be just as amazing as your older selves." Archer then walked towards Lily. His sabers turning off as he stood over her. Lily had to look up to even get a glimpse of his face.
"But I'm afraid I'll be taking this victory." Archer finished with a point down towards the floor Lily looked down to see that she had left the circle. She lost!
"I didn't hear what would happen if you went outside the circle. But I'll take that it means automatic loss?" Archer asked as he offered a hand up to Lily.
"Yes.. it is. I'm sorry for forgetting that part." Lily said sheepishly. She lost, but for some reason she didn't feel bad about it as much as she thought she would. She chalked it up to Archer going all out when no one else wanted to. It felt nice. Like he saw her as an equal and not just some junior who needed to be coddled and not harmed in any way. But why would Archer do that? She would probably never know. It's just another thing that Lily can't help but be curious about when it comes to the bowman. But it's alright.
That mysteriousness surrounding Archer is what makes her like him all the more.
"I can't wait to invite my older selves to duel with us soon, Archer-senpai. Now let's get out of here. I'm starving." Lily beamed as she dragged Archer out of the training facility.
"W-wait. What?" Archer couldn't help but blurt out. If the other Sabers caught wind of this, he'd be fighting them all too! Curse their competitive nature, Archer thought.
