The first thing I saw as soon as I opened my eyes was a bright light coming from the window. The sun's rays were hitting the window so hard that it was almost impossible to open my eyes properly. I just wanted to turn around and go back to sleep, but a shrill voice didn't give me that opportunity and I recognized it immediately.
"Rise and shine, sleepyhead!" Levy hummed.
"Ugh... What time is it?"
"Time for you to get your ass out of bed and go eat breakfast!"
"How can you be so excited this early?"
"My question is how come YOU can't? You really are alcohol intolerant, something tells me that last night was the only time you drank that many shots in one night."
"Probably..." I tried to get up and regretted it in the same second, "Ugh, my head hurts so bad!"
"You'll get used to it fast! Come on, I make the best coffee you could ever drink in your life, but you'll only get a taste of it if you get out of bed right now." she tried to help me by grabbing me by the arms, "That's right, you can do it... Do I have to call Mr. Dragneel to help you again?"
"What do you mean... again?!" I stopped for a moment trying to recapitulate the events of the previous night, "Wait a minute... What the hell happened yesterday when we came home?"
"You don't remember?" I shook my head, "Really? Well... That makes things a lot more interesting." she laughed.
"This is no time to joke, Levy! What happened? Don't tell me I completely embarrassed myself in front of my boss!"
"Relax! Nothing bad happened... I think you put more importance on the fact that he's your boss than he does himself. I think he was much more relaxed than you are and I'm sure he must be completely relieved this morning. Don't worry so much, Lu-chan."
"Of course I have to worry! It's my job that's at stake..."
"Trust me, there's no reason to worry. In fact, I think you made your boss have more fun yesterday than he could ever imagine." she laughed again.
"What does that mean?!"
"I'll tell you everything..." she went to the door and opened it, "If you get out of bed and come to eat to gain strength. You have to go to work soon, don't you?"
She left before I had time to answer and I went back to bed. I grabbed one of the pillows and placed it in front of my face. I let out the biggest scream I could to see if my worries would disappear that very instant. I couldn't imagine the shame I must have experienced the night before in front of Natsu. I didn't even know how I would look at his face once I set foot in the office again.
As soon as I got the strength to stand up, I went to the kitchen and there were two plates on the counter with some pancakes. They looked very good, I couldn't lie... But I was more concerned with everything that had happened the night before than with my appetite. As I sat down in the chair, I continued the conversation with Levy.
"So... Can you tell me what really happened now?"
"Are you really that worried?" she smiled, "I could have sworn that what your boss thinks of you or anything to do with him piques your interest more than anything else."
"Don't be silly, Levy. I just want to know because I remember absolutely nothing. My head is spinning and I know I'm going to fall over at any moment as soon as I take a step forward, so... Please, can you tell me what happened?"
"Well... Where should I start..." she sat down next to me and ate some of her pancake, "I know! I'll start with the fantastic moment when you two came to the bar to help me because you thought I was in trouble. I haven't had the chance to thank you yet for what a great friend you are."
"I remember that part well, Levy... You know well enough what I want to know and you don't need to thank me for doing the right thing."
"Always so restrained, huh?" she smiled, "Well, I guess I don't need to tell you either that, after your big save, we had a great time of rounds of shots, didn't we?" I nodded, "Good, I have to say I didn't expect Mr. Dragneel to be as experienced at drinking shots as-"
"Get to the point, will you?"
"Boring! Anyway, after our fun time, you started to get a little dizzy and see everything spinning around and decided to go to the bathroom... Not before you were having a great time chatting with your boss, of course." she smiled and didn't give me time to protest about those words, "When you came out of the bathroom is when it was a little... bad. You looked terrible and I could tell that you urgently needed to sit down or go home and that's what we decided."
"Wait... 'We' decided? Who are you talking about?"
"Me and your boss, of course! It was the two of us who helped you get out of the bar safely before you ended up falling in the middle of the street."
"Wait, wait... Did Natsu see me in that state too?!" she nodded and I put a hand in my head, "Oh my god, I can't believe it... I feel so embarrassed!"
"Relax! Didn't I already tell you that there's no reason to worry? He wasn't disappointed at all or whatever you're thinking. In fact, he was the one who offered to give us a ride to your house safely. I don't know why you're so worried, he's a real gentleman."
"He... offered to drive us here?"
"Yup! He asked me if I could handle you on my own and left when he saw we were okay. If you want my honest opinion, I think if I hadn't been there he would be the one who would have brought you here and taken care of you."
Hearing that story was too strange for me because I didn't know what to feel about it all. I knew he wasn't a rude or cold person, but just knowing that he took the trouble to help us get home after that awkward moment was too much for me to think straight. I was surprised, but I was even more scared because at that moment I felt a huge gratitude inside me that was making me feel weird.
"Well, here's your story! What did it sound like to you? Was it really as bad as you were imagining in that hollow head of yours?"
"Hey! My head is perfectly intelligent, thank you very much."
"Yeah, yeah... You know, you still haven't told me what you and Mr. Dragneel were doing together before you got to the bar."
"Nothing much... He invited me to a... business dinner."
"A what?" she started laughing, "Yeah, of course! Do you really want me to believe that? Come on, he asked you on a date?"
"No! That's exactly what I just told you, it was nothing like that."
"Well, you can say and think what you want, but that sounds more like a date to me." she stood up and picked up her plate, "But then again, who am I to talk about that, right?" I smiled, "Oh, which just reminded me... How's Sting?"
"I don't know... After last night, I still haven't been able to talk to him."
"Well, I'm sure he'll love to hear all about that episode."
"Are you crazy? I can't tell him what happened. He has enough problems with his job already, and I don't want him to know that I almost passed out in the middle of a bar from drinking too much."
"Well, do as you see fit." the Levy's watch suddenly began to ring, "I've got to get going, work calls!"
"Work? Since when do you work?"
"Lu-chan, did you really think I could go to a bar whenever I want and have a few drinks without having a way to pay for them?" she winked, "I'll see you soon!"
"Wait! Where do you-" she shut the door before I could finish, "...work at?"
I picked up my cell phone and saw that it was already time for me to get dressed and go to work. I went to the bathroom and started undressing to take a shower. As soon as I grab the shower handle to turn on the water, nothing happens. I try one more time and the silence continues in the bathroom. Not a drop of water is heard falling to the floor. This is all I needed... My shower was broken. I couldn't go to work today or the rest of the week without taking a shower. I tried a few more times and realized it was useless, I would really have to call a mechanic tomorrow.
I caught my hair in a ponytail and quickly dressed to go to work. The start of my day indicated perfectly I was really going to have the best luck in the world today.
As soon as I arrived at the building, I looked at myself in the elevator mirror to make sure I was presentable, despite the inconvenience. Once I finally reached the floor, I was stunned as soon as the elevator doors opened and I could see the figure standing at the end of the hallway in front of me.
"Good morning, Miss Heartfilia."
I almost jumped with the fright I got when I heard his voice. I turned around and my eyes crossed with his and I could have sworn my face would be red with embarrassment at that moment for remembering the events of that night.
"Good morning, Mr. Dragneel."
"I see you're looking better today." he smiled, "Has the hangover passed quickly?"
"Umm, yes..." I felt like covering my face at that moment, "I wanted to apologize immensely for everything that happened that night, although I can't remember all the details..."
"Really? You don't remember what happened?"
"Just a few things, but small ones... It's all still a bit cloudy in my head."
Just then, Lisanna walked into the hallway and walked over to Natsu to say something in his ear. As soon as she finished, she looked at me as if she had met her worst rival at that very instant. Sometimes I had doubts about what the heck was going on inside her head. Natsu cleared his voice before speaking again.
"I have to go. I'm having an important meeting and it looks like my partners have arrived early." he smiled before walking away, "It's good to see you're recovered."
I didn't know what to feel at that moment. On one hand I wanted to feel ashamed for knowing what had happened, but on the other I was reassured by the way he was acting. He always acted so calm and serene that it was almost impossible to worry so much about anything. He always found a way to make a horrible subject in my head become the most casual thing. I shook my head to rid myself of the constant thoughts and headed toward my desk to work for the rest of the day.
The next few hours of work were completely normal if I forgot that I had a broken shower at home. When I finally did everything I had to do, I decided to pick up my cell phone and called Levy. I waited a few minutes until she finally answered in her usual animated voice.
"Lu-chan! How nice to hear from you, I've missed your voice."
"You were with me just this morning."
"Isn't it always nice to hear my good friend's voice? You almost break my heart!"
"Listen, Levy... I'm going to need a big favor from you."
"Sure, I'm all ears!"
"You have a shower that works at home, right?"
"Umm, is that some kind of rhetorical question? You can't get me that easily, Lu-chan."
"No, I'm serious... I had a problem after you left. My shower is broken and I couldn't even take a shower and I don't want to walk around like this until the mechanic can come to my house. I'm not feeling good like this at all, my hair is going to look like straw tomorrow."
"I'm sure you're just exaggerating as usual." she laughed.
"That's so not-funny! Do you think I could come by your place after work and take a shower there, please?"
"I don't understand why you have to call me to ask me that... Of course you can! Sometimes I don't understand if you already know that you can ask me anything."
"Thank you, Levy! You're the best!" I looked around and noticed that Natsu was only a few steps away from me, "I have to go, thank you. See you later!"
"Were you talking to Levy?" he asked with his hands on his pockets.
"Uh, yes! I was asking her a favor because of a... unexpected thing that happened."
"I heard... Something about a broken shower, right?"
He leaned against the wall and something made me notice that he looked extremely attractive today. I shook my head as soon as my thoughts got out of my control.
"Yeah... I had a problem this morning with my shower. I don't know what happened, but it's broken. It's weird because it's new, maybe they did something wrong when they put it in."
"Maybe... You know there is a shower in my office, right?" he smiled and raised his eyebrow, "You can use it if you want."
"No, it's not necessary! I don't want to look ridiculous in front of you anymore and asking you for favors for such... minimal things. I'm going to stop by Levy's house after work, you don't need to bother with things like this. I've had enough with the embarrassment I went through in front of you that night."
"So you do remember after all?"
"Not all of it... Levy told me just a few details. Thanks for driving us home, I owe you one."
"You already do too much for me working in this company. I just did what was right or you two would end up finding your way somewhere far away and then it would be a pain in the ass to find you." he smiled and I did the same, "Seriously, the shower is right there at the end of my office." he pointed with his finger.
"But I-" I looked at him and I knew he had a look on his face that told me he already knew what I was going to say next, "Thank you... I think I will."
"You're learning, that's good."
He waited for me to get up to accompany him and I did. It was already late and there were few people in the office, most of them had already gone home. Lisanna was no longer there to see what was happening right now and look at me with that deadly look she always had on her face. I walked into his office and he continued on his way to the bathroom door further down the hall to the left and pointed with his arm to indicate that I could go in.
"I won't be long, I promise!"
"Take your time."
I exchanged one last look with him before finally entering the bathroom. It was exactly how I expected. It wasn't exactly a modern house's bathroom but it was fancy enough to be... Well, an office's bathroom, which was unusual in my head to begin with. The first thing I did was turn around and lock the door. The thought of being there and having to undress in my boss' office, who was just a few meters away from me, made me nervous. I took my jacket and shirt off first and hung them by the door. I removed the rest of my clothes and left them in a place where they couldn't touch the floor.
The thought of being only a few feet away from him completely naked was unnerving. I knew perfectly well that I was having silly thoughts again, but every time I tried to get them out of my head, they came back. His presence was being too much for me, everything around me that had to do with him was being too much for me. It was at that moment that I stopped to remember Levy's words and that she might have been right. Maybe I give too much importance to matters that have to do with him, but... how could I do otherwise? He is my boss, I work for him. I can't just forget that and act like we're friends.
I shook my head again to stop thinking so much and finally got into the shower. As soon as I felt the hot water on my skin, I felt a shiver and then relief ran through my body. It felt like I was in a moment of peace and I didn't want it to end anytime soon. Every drop of warm water that I felt on my skin was another second in which I felt calm and... safe. It was at that moment that I realized that I had been too nervous the past few days and have not been able to relax as well as I did at that exact moment. I had to stop being so dramatic and enjoy every moment of my life. It was such a simple moment, it was just warm water running down my body, but I felt such a comfort. I closed my eyes and stayed like that for a few more minutes until I realized that maybe I should stop and finally get out of the shower.
I grabbed my clothes and got dressed as quickly as I could before he'd start to notice my delay and ask me if I needed help again. I didn't like being dependent on him all the time, that's not why I came to work for a man like him. That's not why I came to work for Fairy Tail, but to fulfill one of my biggest dreams. I had to admit that having a boss like Natsu made things simpler, but I couldn't let the line between the two of us be crossed... Not in the way my head feared so much.
I unlocked the door and finally came out of the bathroom, my hair still wet. He was sitting in his desk chair with one leg crossed over the other and one hand on his face as he leaned on the desk. Again, I don't know if it was the effect of the hot water, but that image of him was too attractive to ignore.
"Thank you for letting me borrow your shower." I smiled gratefully as I tried to put aside my embarrassment.
He didn't answer and just nodded. I was about to grab my things and go home because it was getting late when suddenly I heard the sound of lightning and a sudden flash appeared in my sight. We both looked at the window and noticed that it had started to rain and there was a storm outside.
"Ugh, really? I just finished showering!"
"Were you walking home?"
"No, I usually take a cab."
"Oh, that's right..." he stood up, "If you want, I can give you a ride again."
"I'm starting to get a little embarrassed that I have to keep asking my boss for favors."
"That's because you haven't gotten over this idea that you have to treat me like a king and that I can't help someone who works with me."
"Umm, correction... I work for you."
"That's not how I see things. I don't like to treat my employees like machines." he smiled and grabbed his jacket, "Well, shall we?"
It was at that moment that the light suddenly went out before we could leave the room. I looked around to try to figure out what had happened, but I knew it was probably the fault of the storm.
"Well... Is there anything else that could happen today?"
He looked at me and just smiled upon hearing my question. The thought of looking like an idiot in front of him crossed my mind again.
"I don't know if it's worth going outside right now. It looks like it's bad and it's liable to get worse." he said.
"Ugh, how is it that on one second it's sunny and on the next it's a storm like this?" I rolled my eyes and put my stuff back on the chair, "Is anyone taking care of this?" I pointed to the lights on the ceiling.
"The security guards are probably already trying to fix the problem. Don't forget I have a pretty competent staff." he smiled.
"Well, I hope they fix the problem soon."
I grabbed my phone and texted Levy to let her know that I wouldn't go to her house anymore.
"Are you afraid of the dark?"
"N-No... But I don't exactly like being in the dark during a storm. I don't exactly have good memories."
"I had no idea that a person like you is afraid of... a simple storm."
"We all have our weird secrets, right? I bet you have some too, you're just lucky I don't have the guts to ask."
"Very well..." he walked over to a small counter he had next to his desk and picked up two glasses and a bottle of wine, "Let's see if you have the courage to ask me what you really want to know about me."
He filled it and placed one of the glasses on the table, then sat down in the chair with his legs crossed again. That image was enough to send shivers through my whole body and I went back into alert mode. He gestured with his hand for me to sit in the chair in front of him, and I hesitated.
"What is this?" I raised my eyebrow, "Another business dinner?"
"Let's just say... I'm just as curious as you are. And since we don't exactly have anything to do but wait right now... I guess we'll have to improvise."
I smiled involuntarily. I almost wanted to punish myself for being so comfortable with him in that moment. I wasn't feeling the same nervousness I felt before, for some reason he was able to make me feel like we were both the same in that moment and that there wasn't a line between us. I slowly sat down in the chair and picked up the glass to taste the wine. I didn't exactly like wine, but that one wasn't as bad and it actually tasted nice.
"I've asked this before, but... What do you want to know?" he asked.
"Really? I thought you would be the one to ask me the first question. The boss is always first."
"I'm not using that title right now. Ask me whatever you want and I'll think about whether I should answer or not."
"Is this what you want to do to pass the time? Small talk questions with one of your employers?"
He raised his glass, "I have nothing else better to do at the moment."
"I don't have anything to ask... I don't like to pry into anyone's personal life, much less someone I barely know."
"And yet, you keep wasting the opportunities I give you to get to know me." he took a sip of the wine again, "What's your favorite color?"
"What?" I frowned.
"You don't have any questions to ask, so I'll start... What's your favorite color?"
"Blue and pink..."
"What's your favorite food?"
"I don't exactly have-"
"What's your favorite restaurant?"
"Wait, I haven't even-"
"What's your biggest dream?"
"My biggest..." I lowered my head and sighed, "It's complicated."
"I don't know if you've noticed, but we have time." he smirked.
"Besides writing a successful book... I don't know. I think I'd like to travel the whole world someday. As I told you before, what I want most is to get my mother to be proud of me and what I do, but..."
"Sometimes I think you think too much about what you want for others than what you really want for yourself. Have you ever thought about that?"
"I guess I've always been like that... My mother always taught me to help others first. Just as she always helped me, I guess now I feel it's my responsibility to help her back. I really want to work here and... be able to do something that makes me feel proud of myself. However, I never really thought about the next step."
"I was just like you, you know? Before I got this place, I didn't know what path I wanted to take either. I know this life of mine was forced, I know I'm only here because my father gave me the place, but this was never my dream. I even thought about joining the army just so I wouldn't have to follow in my father's footsteps, but I knew it was impossible. I had my future mapped out for some time." he put down his glass and paused for a few seconds, "That's why I ask you what your biggest dream is. That's why I ask you what you intend to do in your future, so that you don't end up like me...not doing what you really wanted to do. Don't waste any opportunity to do what you want or what you like. Believe me, you'll regret it for the rest of your life."
"Are you saying that if you could go back, you wouldn't have followed in your father's footsteps?"
"Probably... I can't confirm or deny it, I don't know if I would do it all over again."
I paused for a moment and stared at him, "Is it really that bad? I mean, you can have everything you want. You can do anything you want with this life, you're not exactly dependent on anything to do as you please."
"It's not that simple." he smiled, "I think it's funny that you think that. Money isn't everything, Lucy. I may have everything I want in your eyes, but appearances can be deceiving."
"I guess... Still, sometimes I wish I had the same life as you."
"Full of boring meetings, surrounded by people you don't like but have to put up with because of business? Attending parties when you just feel like being alone and thinking about the future of a company with the pressure of your father on your back?" I was static and he just smiled, "Trust me, you wouldn't want to have my life. Sometimes it's better to have a simple life than an extravagant one."
"Yeah..." I looked at my glass, "I guess sometimes we think too much about the easy part that we forget about the difficulties that might be behind it." I smiled and raised my head, "I have a question, though."
"Really? That's a start."
"Why all those questions before? Why did you ask me such trivial things if what you really wanted to know was my biggest dream?"
"I had to start somewhere, right? Let's just say it was a little warm-up." he smiled.
"Which you didn't even give me enough time to answer."
"You want to answer now?" he raised his eyebrow.
"Hmm, not exactly." I laughed involuntarily, "So... When exactly did you go to Japan?"
"About two years ago. I went there on a work trip and ended up staying for two weeks. It's a very interesting country not to stay there for a while when you get the chance."
"I have to admit it's nice to hear my boss speak well of the place where I was born." I raised my glass, "It kind of makes me want to drink this wine all the way through."
"Are you sure?" he laughed and leaned his head on his fist, "I've seen how intolerant you can be with drinks."
"That was a different case... A case I'd rather not remember or talk about, thank you." I sipped the rest of the wine and took a deep breath, "I'm not usually a big fan of wine, but of course a company like Fairy Tail had to have some of the best."
"There's more right there, if you want." he pointed at the bottle.
"No, thanks... I don't want the same disaster as the other night to happen, I wouldn't be able to get back to work again."
"So, how is your mother? Is she working?"
"Yes... She's a nurse, she helps people in need at the hospital. I guess that's why she always had the facility to help me when I needed it. It's a natural talent she has."
"Good, I'm glad to hear that. You'll see that you'll be able to make her proud for all you've been doing here."
"I hope so..." we both smiled.
"What about your boyfriend?"
I felt my chest tighten again hearing that question. With everything that had happened lately, I couldn't even remember to make a call to Sting and ask him how he was doing. That question felt more like a punch in the gut than something casual. I paused for a few seconds before I could answer it.
"He's okay.," I lied, since I had no idea how he was doing recently, "I usually talk to him once in a while, although I haven't heard from him lately. He's a lawyer and always has a lot of work to do."
"Really? Sounds like an ambitious man."
"He is... He works hard to get what he wants. He's always been my support since college... He's the one who made me have the courage to go ahead and send my resume to this company. I think if he hadn't encouraged me, I never would have done it."
"Well... I guess he's a keeper."
There was an awkward silence after those words. I almost had a hard time to answer. The conversation was sounding too awkward in my head. For a moment I remembered again that day on top of the hill when he approached me. I knew he was just being nice to me and making conversation, but something inside me was making me not want to talk about that subject with him. I wanted to talk about something different, not about my relationship. I was too confused. It was almost as if standing there with him talking about everything and nothing had made me forget for a moment about the person I still had in Japan waiting for me and I felt guilty.
"What about music?" he asked.
"What?"
"You like music, right?" I nodded, "Good, I got scared for a moment... What kind of music do you like?"
"I don't know, I don't really have a favorite genre. I listen to a little bit of everything, although I listen to a lot of classical music when I need to relax and work without distractions."
"Well... I don't think it's any surprise to you that we have this here." he walked over to one of the cabinets and pulled out a Marshall speaker from there. Of course someone like him had to have that in his office. I smiled and nodded, "I thought it would be a good option for muffling the noise of the thunder. I don't want you to have a panic attack."
"Ha-ha, very funny." I was amazed at myself for going along with the joke, "Thanks, I think it might actually help."
"So, what music do you want to listen to?"
"You pick it, it can be anything for me."
"Always so indecisive." he smiled and picked up his phone, "How about this one?"
I stayed attentive as I tried to figure out the song he had chosen. At first I wasn't able to recognize it and frowned. He kept looking at me waiting for me to give some sign that I knew that song, until finally I recognized it. It was The Beattles.
"I almost thought you didn't know this."
"Of course I do..." I raised my eyebrow and smiled, "Did you pick this song randomly?"
"Why do you ask?" he smiled back, "I'm just messing with you. I think it's funny this song has your name on it."
"It would be ironic if my parents had chosen my name because of this song. They listened to it all the time."
"Maybe that's not such a wrong theory."
We stood there for a while in silence where the only noise in the air was the music. It was a music that made you want to tap your foot on the floor or get up and start dancing. I closed my eyes to listen and appreciate it better and it was after a few seconds that I must have started to lean my body sideways to the music, because Natsu caught my attention and chuckled.
"What?" I opened my eyes and asked.
"Nothing, it's just that... You were so focused on your own moment that I didn't even want to interrupt."
"My moment?" I blinked a few times as I realized, "I was reeling, wasn't I? How embarrassing."
"Not at all, I actually thought it was cute."
I don't know if it was too obvious at that moment, but I could have sworn my face was starting to flush as I heard those unexpected words. I didn't know if it was for that reason or if it was still due to the embarrassment.
"C'mon, I won't restrain you." he walked away and gave me space.
"What do you mean?"
"It seems like you're dying to dance."
"Oh, n-no! I don't dance." he raised his eyebrow, "Not in front of people, at least..."
"What a surprise..." he chuckled, "C'mon, just pretend I'm not here."
"No, I really can't..." I put my hands on my face to cover it and I noticed that he was smirking, "Stop mocking me, please!"
"It's just the first time I've actually seen you a bit more relaxed."
I smiled with those words. I didn't understand my own behavior and how I managed to be so calm.
"Well, don't get used to it. I still haven't forgotten that you're my boss."
He chuckled, "I wasn't expecting otherwise." suddenly, the lights came back on and he turned around to look at the window, "It looks like the rain has finally stopped. The lightning went pratically unnoticed after the song. You don't need to thank me."
"I think I have to thank you for all this wasted time that you had to put up with my company." I smiled.
"You don't have to, it was a good company."
We were smiling until I lost track of time and when I finally came back to reality, I cleared my voice before speaking.
"Well, I'd better go home now. It's past the time I should be preparing dinner and Levy must be waiting for me."
He walked pass me and grabbed his jacket where he kept his car keys. He opened up the door and gestured for me to follow him, so I did. His extraordinary car was parked at the usual place and he waited for me to get inside before doing the same and start the engine. I subtly looked at him before he started driving and I felt a little tight on my chest. The sight of him was different in my eyes in that very moment. I suddenly felt scared at that feeling, so I immediately turned away my attention from him and looked at the road to distract myself from those thoughts once again.
The drive was quick, I didn't live that far from my work. I was inside the car the whole time trying not to feel as embarrassed as the other times. His words were starting to have a different effect on the way I saw things now. I knew I was just being paranoid about everything that was going on. It wasn't because he was my boss that he had to be cold and distant with me, that I had come to realize.
As soon as we arrived and I got ready to leave and grab my keys, my eyes widened and I felt a huge tightness in my chest. My bag was not around me. I started to panic and tried to look back over all the places I could have left my bag. It was at that moment that he noticed that I was looking everywhere without a rest.
"Are you okay? What's wrong?"
"My bag... I didn't... I don't know where it is!"
He looked around the car looking for my bag, but I had already looked in every corner and it was nowhere to be found. I had left my house keys, my wallet and everything I needed inside it.
"Take it easy, it probably stayed in the office and you forgot to bring it with you."
"Oh my god, you're right! The office! It could only have stayed there..." I put my hands to my face, "How distracted I am, I'm so sorry for this whole mess. Do you think we can go back there so I can pick it up, please? I feel like such an idiot."
"Is there anything important you need?"
"Just my house keys right now..." I smiled, "Unless I decide to sleep on the street."
"I guess that's not what I pay you for." he smiled and I reciprocated as I understood the joke, "Well, I confess it's not a very good idea to go back to the office now... My security has already locked everything down and they've activated the alarm."
"Really? Sorry... I'm such an idiot, I really didn't want to be bothering you with these silly things."
"When are you going to stop being so hard on yourself? It's not silly at all. You demand a lot of yourself, Lucy. You need to start realizing that you're human and anyone goes through these things." he picked up his phone, "I'll try calling my security guard to see if he can get back to the office."
"N-No, you don't have to do that, it's okay... He's probably at home or sleeping already. I can call Levy and ask her to stay at her place tonight."
"From what I understand, by now your friend should be on her seventh drink."
"You're right..." I couldn't contain my laughter, "I don't even know what I'm supposed to do now, but she's the only option I can think of right now."
He handed me his phone, "Here, call her."
"I don't exactly know her number..." I paused for a few seconds and put my hands on my face before looking at him again, "I'm sorry, but can you-"
"I think I'm going to start charging you for favors" he grinned.
"I swear, if it's up to me, this is the last favor."
"I'm just kidding." he turned his attention back to the steering wheel and started the car, "All you have to do is tell me the way."
I smiled gently, but he turned his face away before he could notice. He was so nice to me that it was almost impossible to be able to understand the real reason why. He wasn't like that with the rest of the employees in the office, I was no fool not to be able to notice that. The whole thing scared me. It scared me because I didn't know why he was the way he was with me and I was afraid of thinking the wrong idea, and it also scared me because I was beginning to have doubts in my own head. I was getting carried away and affected by that sympathy. I shook my head to push those thoughts away and sat down properly for the rest of the ride to Levy's house.
Once we finally got there, I got out of the car and looked at him after closing the door.
"Thanks again, for all the mess."
"You're welcome. Make sure your friend hasn't gotten in any kind of trouble tonight." he smirked.
"I will... See you tomorrow..." I hesited before finishing, "Natsu."
"Goodnight, Lucy."
He closed up the window and left. I stared in the car's direction until it finally disappeared. I felt a small water drop on my face and looked up. It started raining again. I ran to Levy's house's door and knocked, until she finally answered it and looked at me with a confused expression, since I had told her that I wouldn't show up at her house anymore.
"It's a long story." I said.
"Get in, friend. I have all night."
DISCLAIMER: For those of you who don't know or didn't recognize the name of the song that Natsu was playing, it's "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" from The Beattles. Hiro Mashima was inspired by this song to choose Lucy's name, so I thought it would be a nice choice to include here.
