Thanks again for being so patient. I hope you enjoy this chapter!
It was only a few hours away before the start of the event, and Levy and I were in my room putting on our dresses and making sure we were going to look presentable and minimally pretty. I put on natural makeup so as not to overdo it, although Levy thought I should have done something more flashy so that everyone would look at me as soon as I entered the room, but that was not my goal. She was too excited about the party and I could see that, but for me it was just another situation where I would be afraid of embarrassing myself and have absolutely no idea what might happen. It was my first company party and I was already feeling my nerves on edge.
I was alerted by a sound Levy made as soon as she looked in the mirror.
"I'm pretty sure I put on some weight these days, the dress didn't fit me this way when we went to buy it."
"Really, Levy?" I looked at her like I was watching a clown, "You look beautiful and you look exactly the same as the day we went shopping, don't be silly."
"You think so?" she inspected herself again, "It must just be the nerves then. I have a feeling I'm too bloated."
"Nerves why?"
"It's not every day that I get invited to go to an event of one of the biggest companies in the world. I'm not going to lie and say that I'm not too excited to be there."
"It's just a normal party like all the others, I'm sure. I don't think there's anything to worry about."
"Look at you, Miss Nerves... Who knew you'd be able to go a day without worry and without expecting the worst."
"I'm not that pessimistic."
"Keep telling yourself that and you might believe it one day." she looked at her watch, "What we have to do is leave now if we want to get there in time before they slam the door in our faces. I don't want to go through that embarrassment, I have a reputation to uphold."
"I'm sure that reputation is very well known in all the bars you frequent." I laughed and she huffed, "Come on, it's time we had some fun."
Before we left the room, I took one last look in the mirror. I could hardly believe my image. It was unusual for me to dress like this, and for the first time in my life I felt like a real princess in that dress. I felt... beautiful. An involuntary smile formed on my face and I was taken aback when Levy called my name and pulled me out of my thoughts.
We arrived at the entrance of the company building and both of us sketched a smile as we looked at each other. Despite our nerves, we were both very happy to be there and wanted to remember this evening as well as possible. I was having some doubts about Levy because I knew perfectly well that as soon as any drink passed in front of her eyes, she would not be able to resist and her memory capacity would be more impaired than mine. Still... I knew we would have fun.
When we got to the door of the event room we could perfectly hear the jazz music coming from inside the room. The music was soothing and relaxing and I already felt comfortable as soon as I heard those instruments playing. We entered the room and I looked around. Most of the workers were already there, although there were many people there that I didn't know and had never seen in all the months I had been here. Levy took my arm and tried to catch my eye as soon as she saw a man who caught her interest and smiled, even though I wasn't as interested as she was and that wasn't the reason I had come to the party.
Before we could take a few more steps, a man with a tray came up to us and waved as he stretched the tray toward us. It was filled with small glasses with some drink that definitely had alcohol in it and I could almost see Levy's face light up.
"Are you served, ladies?"
"You don't even have to ask." Levy replied as soon as she grabbed one of the glasses and smiled.
"No, thank you." I replied with a smile.
The man nodded again and walked away. Although I refused the drink, Levy tried to offer me some of hers and I looked at her with an amazed expression.
"You really can't help yourself, can you?"
"I'm trying to help you, friend! Don't forget that we're here to have fun and a little alcohol never hurt anyone. I know you're afraid the same thing will happen as the other night, but one drink isn't going to make you look like a crazy person on the dance floor."
She laughed and I bumped her lightly on the arm. I inspected the rest of the ballroom some more. The band was on a small stage with the red velvet floor at the back of the room playing the relaxing music. There was a huge table full of drinks and food on the right side of the room and there were already lots of people around it looking at all the plates and snacks to decide what they were going to eat. I looked up at the ceiling and was completely amazed at the huge, beautiful chandeliers. I could have sworn they were made of crystals, and they probably had some, but the glass was making a beautiful contrast in the middle of the room because of the soft light and there seemed to be millions of crystals on the floor because of the reflection. There were some pillars on either side of the room and red velvet curtains with some touches of gold were wrapped around them in an elegant manner. I had to admit that the decoration of the event had been well chosen and looked stunning. Erza and her team had done an excellent job.
It was then, in the middle of the crowd, that I looked to the back of the room on the left side where there were many men in suits and ties, and noticed who was there in the middle of them... Natsu. He was looking quite elegant in a black suit, as I had seen several times before whenever he dressed formally, but today he looked particularly different. His face now had the reflected light from the lamps and it made him look quite mysterious and dazzling. It was at that moment when I noticed how distracted I was looking at him that our eyes suddenly crossed and my heart stopped. Seeing him without being watched back was one thing, but now he had seen me too and I was nervous when he smiled in my direction and raised his glass as if he was greeting me. I just nodded and smiled and Levy noticed.
"Looks like your fun just started after all, huh?"
"What are you talking about?"
"I know you're going to pretend you don't know, so I'll let it slide this time." she grabbed my arm, "Come on, let's just go check out that table full of food over there because my stomach is begging for it."
I smiled as we walked over there. She was right, that table was quite flashy and since neither of us had had dinner yet, it looked like a real feast in our eyes.
I didn't even know what to choose, there was so much food and everything looked good. It really looked like a banquet and the best part, according to Levy, was that we could eat everything for free. I couldn't help but smile at everything she said, she was the best company I could have found since I came to this city. She was the only real friend I had in New York and she was the best person to make me laugh and have fun like I never thought I would. She didn't hesitate to grab loads of snacks and I did the same. I had to admit that the food was great.
"I have to admit that you bringing me to this party was the best decision you ever made."
"Really? Are you saying that honestly or is that just your stomach talking?"
"You almost insult me, Lu-chan! You know I love you, thank you for choosing me as your company tonight."
"But of course... Who else could I choose? I don't see anyone else here as fun as you."
"You're right, I am the most fun, aren't I?" we both laughed.
Before our conversation could continue, a familiar face was coming towards us. That red hair the same color as a blazing fire did not go unnoticed and she smiled as soon as she looked at me.
"Lucy! I was already thinking that you wouldn't come after I didn't find you among all these people."
"Good night, Erza!" I grabbed Levy's arm, "I want to introduce you to my friend-" she clarified her voice, "My great friend Levy."
"That's better." she smiled and held out her hand to greet Erza, "It is a pleasure to meet you, Miss ..."
"Scarlet, but you can call me Erza. Here we are all relaxed about it, we don't need as much formality in the middle of an event like this." she looked at me again, "Are you enjoying it?"
"Yes, I have to admit that everything is much better than I expected. The decoration is beautiful, you did a great job."
"Oh, you're the decorator? Everything looks amazing!" Levy said.
"Thank you, but it wasn't just me who brought this room to life. My team worked together with me to make this event go exactly as we wanted." she looked at her cell phone and smiled, "I'm afraid I have to be somewhere else right now, I'm sorry. I hope to see you again for the rest of the night, enjoy and have fun!"
We both thanked and I waved while Erza was leaving.
"She's nice, and did you see that hair? It looked like fire!"
"I know, she is really beautiful. She was one of the people who helped me to feel comfortable in the company, she is a good person."
"I hope so. I can't imagine working in a place where everyone is smug and rude. You are lucky to be here."
It was when I heard her words that I really stopped to think about what she had said. Yes, I was really lucky to be working here. The people were all great and I was working on one of my biggest dreams. I couldn't complain, even after all the strange things that happened to Natsu or on my trip to Japan, I couldn't deny that I was really lucky.
"Oh my god, we have to try those!"
I looked in the direction her finger was pointing. A couple of small breaded balls were on one of the plates and they looked very good. I smiled and agreed. We both grabbed a piece and ate. The taste was extraordinary, even though it was such a small snack it seemed like there was a mixture of exotic flavors inside. I was delighted until I felt a strange taste in the middle of it all and my eyes widened.
"Mhmm! Absolutely delicious, I have to ask the chefs what their special recipe is because this is definitely something I have to try-" she looked at me suddenly, "Lu-chan? Are you okay?"
She noticed my expression of surprise and concern. I knew perfectly well what I had tasted in that snack...shrimp. I was nervous at that moment not knowing what kind of reaction I was going to have in the next few minutes.
"Levy... Did this snack have shrimp in it or was it just me?"
"No, I'm sure it was a breaded seafood ball. Why?" she frowned.
"I'm allergic to shrimp!"
"What?! And you're just telling me now?" she widened her eyes, "Why didn't you use your sense of smell to detect the shrimp?"
"What do you think I am? A cat?!"
"Oh my god, what do I do? I've never been in a situation like this before! Are you okay, do you need anything?"
"Right now I need you to calm down because I'm already nervous enough. There's no reason for so much alarm, I don't usually get really bad reactions, just a stomach-" I made a sound of pain at that moment and sighed, "...ache."
I squirmed in pain and Levy placed her hands on my shoulders in a way to help me pull myself together before anyone noticed that I was clearly having a bad time.
"Do you want to go outside for a while?"
"No... I'm fine, I just need to go to the bathroom for a few minutes until this gets better. It doesn't usually take long."
"Okay, I'll walk you there."
We passed through the crowd to the hallway that led to the bathroom. I had no idea if Natsu had seen us leaving, but I also didn't know why the hell I would be worried about it. Levy stood outside waiting for me while I went in and leaned against the sinks as another wave of pain coursed through my stomach. I really should be more careful about what I eat, considering my allergies.
I stayed for a few minutes trying to relax and let the pain go away as I looked toward the mirror and it was at that moment that I heard a female voice outside the bathroom talking to someone. It was not Levy's voice, of that I was sure and only after hearing a few more words did I recognize who that voice belonged to... Lisanna.
I definitely didn't want to be face to face with her, I didn't want her to see me in that state. I turned around and went into one of the bathroom stalls and closed the door as fast as I could. I took a deep breath and listened to her voice getting closer and closer until she finally entered the bathroom. She seemed to be talking on her cell phone with someone. At first I couldn't make out the conversation, but as soon as I peeked in and noticed that she was standing in front of the mirror taking something out of her purse, I could hear some words.
"I told you, I've been busy lately." she pulled a red lipstick from her purse and touched up her makeup, "I know, I miss you too but what do you want me to do? I've had a lot of work."
Miss you? Who would she be talking to? Surely it could be some family member or friend she hadn't seen in quite some time. I knew it was wrong to be listening to the conversation since I just wanted to avoid her seeing me, but I didn't want to get out of there and my stomach ache wasn't helping either.
"I promise that as soon as I get some free time, I'll come to you. It shouldn't be that long now either." she put her lipstick back in her purse as soon as she was done and grabbed her phone properly, "Don't worry about it, love. The plan is going exactly as expected. I'm sure he doesn't suspect anything and in a while I'll have everything back in my hand."
What? What the hell would she be talking about? And why had she just called the person on the other end of the call 'love'? It certainly wouldn't be Natsu because he was here at the event, it didn't make any sense that they were talking on their cell phones when they could just talk in the room. After what I had seen when I came back from Japan, the only person she could call that would be Natsu, right?
"Are you doubting me? Relax, I know exactly what I'm doing. Natsu suspects absolutely nothing. I've had a few unforeseen events in the last few weeks, but it's all taken care of now. That girl won't get in the way of our plan and everything will be fine, you'll see." she laughed mischievously and I shuddered, "Yes, I know... She's quite perceptive, more than I was expecting. In a few months we'll be living the best phase of our lives, baby. You can trust me."
That person was definitely not Natsu, but they were talking about him. I was too confused by that conversation, but I couldn't help but be surprised by everything I was hearing. What the hell was she planning and who was the girl she was talking about? It couldn't possibly be me, could it? I was sure that there are too many other people in Natsu's life for Lisanna to be talking about me at that moment. I was so focused on the conversation and so intrigued by everything that I almost forgot about the stomach ache or my allergy was probably over.
"I'm going to have to hang up. The party's already started and it'll feel weird if I stay here too long." she laughed again, "I love you too, see you soon."
As soon as she hung up her phone, she put it in her purse and looked at herself in the mirror as she fixed her hair and smiled at her own reflection. I felt a chill run through my body as I looked at her because I had no idea what was going on, but something told me it was not a good thing. Was she... having an affair with someone else? However, I felt that it had nothing to do with me and that I should not pry into matters that were none of my business.
As soon as she got ready to leave, I waited to hear the sound of the door closing to finally leave as well. When Levy looked at me, I continued to look in front of me where Lisanna's back was going. I came back to reality when I felt Levy's hand grab my arm.
"Are you okay? With that face you look like you left worse than when you came in."
"Yeah, I'm fine... It's just... That woman..." I kept looking towards Lisanna and Levy did the same.
"Is that the same woman who was with your boss the day of the festival?" I nodded, "She definitely doesn't convey good energy to me. What's going on?"
"Nothing, I'll tell you later... At least until I understand better what's going on, I think now is the time to have fun and not think about weird things."
"Are you sure?"
I grabbed her arm, "I'm absolutely sure. I think I'll try one of those drinks they offered us in the lobby just so you'll be more at ease."
"That's what I like to hear! I sure hope you'll tell me about it later, though."
We walked over to one of the waiters holding the trays and I grabbed one of the glasses. I drank it without a second thought and I even had to admit that it wasn't bad at all. It tasted sweet and I could hardly even notice the alcohol.
"See? What did I tell you? You really need to start trusting me more." she smiled and looked towards the band as soon as they started playing another song, "Oh my god, Lu-chan! You have to dance with me, please. You can't ignore this song."
It was at that moment that I immediately recognized the song as soon as one of the musicians in the band started singing. It was definitely the song 'Feeling Good' and I felt a chill go through my body just like it did every time I heard the beginning of the song. It was an elegant song and matched perfectly at this event. I confess that I was surprised, but I smiled as soon as Levy put her glass on one of the tables next to her and started dancing a few steps by herself. She could really do all the fun by herself and no one could stop her.
She grabbed my hands all of a sudden and I couldn't help it when she pulled me into the middle of the room where the dance space was and some of the workers were now also dancing there.
She twirled me around and we both laughed to the music. The effect my dress had made when I twirled was so magical that I suddenly felt like I was dancing in the middle of a castle and I was royalty. I was so distracted dancing with Levy that I didn't even notice that someone had approached us when I heard a familiar voice.
"Looks like you're having a great time."
When I turned towards the voice behind me, I saw Natsu standing looking at us with a smile on his face. I was surprised to see him in front of me, but I could have sworn that Levy had the biggest smile on her face as soon as she noticed his presence too.
"Good night, Lucy."
"Good night, Natsu." I smiled, "You know how it is ... There is no way to be bored around her."
"I can see that." he smiled back, "Maybe not as much as the other night, but I think I'm already familiar with it."
"I can assure you that you haven't seen anything yet, Mr. Dragneel." Levy spoke while she smiled at me.
"Are you enjoying the night?" he asked me.
"Yes... Everything is very beautiful. Erza did an excellent job. It looks like I'm really in a jazz party room."
"Erza is very professional and she always knows how to get what she plans to do. It is one of the reasons why I chose her as my right-hand." he paused, "Do you like this song?"
"What?"
"This song ... I saw you and your friend from afar and started dancing as soon as this song played."
"Oh, yes ... Levy really wanted-" I looked back and she was no longer with us, she had moved away and was dancing in the middle of the room, "... to dance."
She looked at me in that instant and smiled as she subtly winked. I had no idea what she meant by that, but knowing her, it couldn't be a good thing. She had done that to leave the conversation between me and Natsu and I felt the nerves running through my body at that moment, even though it was not the first time I was alone with him in the same space.
"What about you?"
"What about me?"
"Do you want to dance too?"
"What... What do you mean-"
I couldn't finish the sentence when I saw him reach out to me. The nerves intensified. I stayed a few seconds looking at his hand, not knowing what to do or what to say. He was asking me to dance with him. I was so surprised at that moment that my mind was clouded without any thoughts.
"Would you like to dance with me, Lucy?"
Hearing my name said like that was enough to make goose bumps go through my body.
"I don't... I don't know how to-"
"I'll lead you."
Without realizing it, I slowly nodded and grabbed his hand. The next few seconds were almost like a blackout for me, since the nerves weren't letting me think straight. He pulled me slightly closer to him and put his other arm around my waist. That unexpected approach was enough to make me feel weak for some reason.
I had no idea what I was doing, I had never danced before, much less at such a slow pace. I did the right thing and followed his footsteps, despite being so nervous that I was afraid of eventually stepping on his feet. He just looked at me and formed a provocative smile on his lips.
"I see this is the first time that you have danced something like this."
"I don't usually dance, to be honest."
"That may explain why you are so helpless to follow in my footsteps, but it does not explain the fact that you are practically shaking."
"I don't... I'm fine, it's just the nervousness of embarrassing myself in front of everyone."
"Are you sure? You don't seem like the type of person who cares about the people around you or what they think about what you're doing. You're going to have to lie better than that."
"What do you expect? I'm not used to these things."
"Yes, you already said that. However, is that a reason for you to be shaking as if you're too nervous around me?"
"That's not it."
"So what is it?"
I didn't know how to respond. He was right, I was too nervous to be in that situation so close to him. I was sure Levy would be looking at us and laughing at that moment. It was strange enough all the closeness that he and I had had these past few weeks, but dancing with him in this way was another level.
I was thinking of something to answer him and it was at that moment that I regretted moving my gaze across the room to his eyes. He was looking at me and as soon as our eyes met, I felt trapped. Not because he was grabbing me with one arm, but because every time my eyes met his I felt that he was looking at me so penetrating that it was impossible to ignore.
"Tell me what's wrong, Lucy."
After hearing those words, I remembered again what had happened when I went to the bathroom. He didn't know anything about that conversation I had heard from Lisanna. In fact, I didn't even know what it was about. Should I tell him? Should I tell him what I heard, even though it is not a matter that concerns me? The conversation was suspicious, I had to admit it, but something told me that if I got into it I would regret it later.
He called my name again so I could get back to reality.
"Nothing's wrong, I swear. I told you, this is all new to me and I'm a little nervous. It's all... a new experience for me."
"The song is almost over, try to follow the rest of my steps so you don't get embarrassed in front of everyone."
He winked subtly and I couldn't help but smile. I tried to follow him as much as I could without getting out of balance and I could have sworn I was already getting the hang of the dance without getting mixed up. I still couldn't forget my nerves when I felt his hand on my waist squeeze a few times as we moved, making us a little closer than when we started dancing. As soon as the song ended, my heart stopped when I realized that that moment was over. He looked into my eyes for a few seconds before slowly removing his arm around my waist.
"See? It wasn't that bad, was it?" he smiled.
"Just because I had a teacher like you guiding me."
"Not exactly true, I'm not that experienced with these things myself. Although I have to admit that even though you look beautiful in that dress, once someone took you to the dance floor it would be a disaster."
I was so compelled by the compliment he had given me that I didn't even notice the joke he had said next. I opened my mouth and pushed him slightly by the arm while he laughed and I did the same.
"You're not exactly a professional dancer either, Mr. Dragneel." I said his name playfully.
"What can I say? I'm better at improvising." he looked behind me, "Where did your friend go?"
I turned around and as soon as I noticed that Levy was no longer in the same place as before, I couldn't help but let out a big sigh.
"Where did she go this time?"
"Should we go look for her?"
"As if you're not already familiar with this situation to know the answer." I smiled as I looked at him, "Let's see what trouble she might have gotten into this time."
We searched the whole room and there was no sign of Levy. She was gone without even telling me where she went. I was starting to get worried because that was not normal. We went everywhere, we searched the entire room, the bathroom and there was no sign of her. We were now in the last place one of the balconies in the building that had a view of the entire city below. Once again, she was not there.
"Where did she go?" I sighed.
"Maybe she felt bad and went home."
"I don't think so, she would have warned me if that had happened. I'll try to call her." I took my phone and waited for a few seconds, "Nothing. She won't answer."
"Don't worry, I'm sure she is fine and is out there just having a few drinks while you were dancing." he took out his cell phone and motioned for me to wait, "Yes, could you do me a favor? Can you check if a short girl with blue hair left the building? If you don't find anything, can you let me know if you see her ? Thanks." he hung up the phone and looked at me, "Done, if anyone sees her at the entrance of the building, we'll know."
"I just hope she's okay..."
I lowered my head as I sighed and when I looked back up, I noticed the moon. It was beautiful tonight, despite being always. However, it seemed that it shone with more intensity. I was so delighted by the view that I didn't even notice when I started walking slowly towards the edge of the balcony. I looked down at the big city. Its lights made a brilliant contrast to the moonlight and it was all so beautiful. It felt like I was living in a dream city and I couldn't believe it. I was so distracted by the view that I didn't even notice when Natsu was beside me and he looked in the same direction as me.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" I asked.
"Yes, it is."
I felt a strange sensation when I heard that answer again. He had said the same thing when we were at his office the other day. It was at that moment that I looked at him and he was looking at me again. The tingling that I always felt inside my body came back suddenly. I no longer knew if he was talking about the sight or me and I felt a tightness in my chest. I felt my face heating up and smiled nervously.
"I'm talking about the view, you know?"
"What else would we be talking about?"
He took me by surprise and I just smiled, "I don't know ... I just wanted to make sure we were on the same page."
He took his eyes off mine and looked down at the city. The moonlight now hit his face and I was amazed at the image that was in front of my eyes. I had seen him in several ways, but each new one always seemed like a surprise. The light hit his face and he looked so mysterious and so... stunning. I felt trapped looking at him like that. For some reason, I couldn't stop looking and it scared me. I felt weird again with that tingling in my body.
I stared at him, not taking my eyes off his. I couldn't move, my body didn't respond, and it seemed like I just didn't want to get out of there. It seemed that what I wanted most at that moment was to stay. It was so quiet that I could only hear my breathing and also his, considering that we weren't that far apart.
I had no idea what expression I had on my face at that moment, but a part of me didn't seem to care either. I was surprised when I noticed that his eyes traveled across my face, possibly my lips, and then back to my eyes again. His look was quick, but I noticed it and felt a chill.
"You shouldn't look at me like that." he said in a firm tone, "You might give me wrong ideas."
"I-I'm sorry."
"It's okay, you don't have to get that agitated."
"I was... I got a little distracted by..." I sighed, "You know what? It's nothing, I think I should just go."
"Why?"
"Because it's getting late and I'm worried about Levy."
"She's fine, have you forgotten that I asked my security guard to check the exit? She's still here."
"Yes, but... Still, I think I should go check the room one more time."
I was getting ready to leave when his voice behind me sounded in such a serious tone that the chill in my body intensified, "Lucy." I turned and looked at him again, "Tell me what's going on."
"I don't know what you're talking about, I already told you that I will-"
"You're lying. Just like you were lying when I confronted you in my office about why you came to the company the day you got back from your trip."
"I didn't lie, I told you exactly what I came here to do."
"Do you really think I believe that? Like I told you, you're not very good at lying." he started walking towards me, "I only said I believed it because I didn't want to force you to say it, but now you're acting too weird and I can't ignore it anymore."
I felt the need to leave so I wouldn't have to tell him everything, but once again my body didn't seem to obey me and I hated that. At that moment, it seemed he had guessed my thoughts because as soon as I made a move and took a step back, he grabbed my wrist and held me in place.
"Let me go, please."
"Not before you tell me exactly what's wrong with you. You're acting strange and you were fine a few minutes ago." I looked away, "Tell me what I did wrong."
"You didn't do anything wrong, I already said I'm just worried about Levy."
"So be it."
Suddenly, without me expecting it, his hand pulled me by the wrist and as I was taken by surprise, my body moved too fast for me to have a reaction. He pulled me until my back was against the edge of the balcony railing and he was right in front of me with his arms placed on either side so I couldn't run away. His face was only some distance from mine and I felt that strange sensation again as I noticed how close he was.
"Have you forgotten that I am your boss?" he smiled, but not in a malicious way, "I'm ordering to tell me what's going on."
"That's not fair."
"I'm past the line of playing fair if you refuse to tell me."
I could feel his breathing just inches away from me. He had managed to take me by surprise and there was no possibility that would help me out of the situation. I didn't exactly have a choice and really...What would be the harm in telling him? Would he laugh at me? My head had been a mess these past few days, my body was reacting in a way I wasn't expecting and now, he could possibly think I was an idiot. Still, I took a deep breath and sighed before I spoke.
"Fine, you win!" I could see the smile on his face, "I came all the way to the building when I got back because... I had things I needed to do and-"
"You're lying again. Tell me why."
"I wanted to... I wanted to see you." I said too low and I knew he hadn't been able to hear by the way he looked at me, "I wanted to see you, okay?! That's why I came all the way here before I went home. I don't know... I don't know why, but I just wanted to... "
He stared at me like he was surprised that I said it, but he also looked like he already knew it all along.
"Why didn't you come to my office? Why did you leave without letting me know you were here?"
"Because you were... You were with... "
Again, his expression showed that he was already suspicious. He knew perfectly well that I had been in the building at the same time that he and Lisanna were in the office together, and that was why I hadn't said anything. He knew that perfectly well, that was why he knew that I had lied the other day. His eyes didn't let go of mine.
"You could have just walked in or said something."
"I didn't want to interrupt, so-"
"I don't think that's the reason. I can't help but notice that somehow it seems like it's bothering you."
Was it really that obvious? Had I made any expression when I said all that that would make him notice that? I wasn't exactly upset, but... My chest tightened and I felt goosebumps as he looked at me seriously and I could only hear my breathing getting heavier.
"What I don't understand is why it bothers you so much, considering you have a boyfriend."
That's when it hit me. He had no idea what had happened with Sting. He had no idea what he had done and that we weren't dating anymore. With everything that was currently going on, I realized that I had never told him about that, even if he didn't really need to know about it anyway. I sighed and looked down.
"I don't... I don't have a boyfriend." I looked up and he had a surprised look on his face, "Not anymore... I broke up with him when I arrived there. He... He cheated on me with someone else."
We were silent for a few seconds. Talking about that subject still made me feel horrible. It made me feel like an idiot for trusting a person like Sting. I tried to hold back the tears that were trying to form in my eyes and he had probably noticed.
I could still feel my breathing and his at the same time and I was taken aback when I felt something cold touch the skin of my cheek. I hadn't even noticed that he had raised his hand and was now slowly running his fingers over my skin. The sensation was warm and pleasant, even though his hand was a little cold. The contact of his cool skin with mine brought a good feeling and I almost felt bad that I was enjoying that moment, more than I expected. If I had let myself get carried away and distracted for a few more seconds, my eyes would have closed and who knows what might've happen next.
I blinked my eyes as soon as I realized the position we were in. He was only a few inches away from me, and I cleared my voice so he would realize it too. He withdrew his hand, but remained in the same place.
"Is there anything else you want?" I asked.
He didn't look away from my eyes.
"What do you think, Lucy?"
