Angel took her time eating while Hellboy scarfed his down and made another sandwich. Then he scarfed that one down. By the time she finished her sandwich, Hellboy had already finished and was full.
"Another sandwich?" Hellboy asked.
She looked up from her plate. She had been so focused on her plate that she didn't really look at him much. The events from the bathroom had filled her thoughts too much. She was surprised she was hungry enough to finish her plate. She shook her head.
"I'm good," Angel said. "I ate more than usual anyways."
Hellboy looked at her with a cocked eyebrow, "More than usual? What is your usual?"
She smiled sheepishly. She knew she didn't eat enough. "Half a sandwich and no chips?"
He was surprised, but then again, he shouldn't have been surprised. "How are you not skin and bones right now?" He asked as he took her empty plate and set it on the trolley.
"I honestly don't know," She said with a small laugh. Her father had always restricted what she ate growing up and her body was just too used to it. Even when she ate on her own, it was normal to not eat as much…or sometimes skip a meal.
He shook his head in reply and grabbed the trolley to set it outside the room for someone to pick up. Then he came back and sat down beside her. For a moment there was an awkward silence, as each of them tried to figure out what to say. If they could read each other's mind, they'd know they were both thinking about the bathroom.
"Should we talk-"
"Do you wanna-"
They both spoke at the same time. They smiled at each other. Then Hellboy spoke up. "You go ahead."
"Well…I was wondering if maybe we should talk about what happened in the bathroom? I don't know if you wanna talk about that. I mean we don-"
Hellboy stopped her when he grabbed her fidgeting hands.
"You're rambling," He smiled at her. He didn't realize that she rambled when she got nervous. "We can talk about it."
He let her hands go. And she froze. She didn't know how to talk about it.
"I don't...I don't know how…" Angel stammered.
He got the gist of what she would have said so he talked instead.
"It's okay. Will you let me ask you a really private question?" He asked her. He was curious to see if his assumption of her was right or not. She nodded.
He rubbed the back of his head, suddenly unsure of how to ask such a delicate question. But he took the chance.
"Are you a virgin?" he blurted out.
Her cheeks went past pink into red as she registered what he was asking. She cleared her throat and looked away from him. "Yes," She whispered.
"I didn't mean to embarrass you," He said as he lifted a hand to her chin and pulled her to look at him. "It's okay. I needed to know for myself because of what happened. I didn't want to accidentally take advantage of you."
"I don't know how much experience you have or don't have," He elaborated further.
"I don't really have much," she said. "Aside from books and the internet. My dad didn't really give me the birds and the bees lecture. He didn't think I'd meet someone."
She clenched her hands together, nervous and Hellboy noticed. So, he dropped his normal hand to hers and clasped over them. She opened her hands, and he slipped through. His fingers found their way between hers and squeezed. She folded her fingers over his hand.
"I didn't really go out to meet anyone. I just worked to earn money and the only friends I really made were the neighbors. Like the ones with kids that I make cupcakes for," She said.
"That sounds lonely. Though I can't really say any different for me," Hellboy said. "All I had was my father, Abe, and Liz."
"That's more than what I had," Angel said.
"So…when I touched you…" Hellboy started. Angel nodded, "Yeah. Like I said, nobody has ever touched or even seen it. You're the only one."
"So, your dad hasn't…"
She shook her head, "I mean yeah, he's seen it, but he also went out of his way to make sure I never show it. Just as much as he made sure I couldn't use my wings." She raised the hand with the bangle on it.
He dropped his eyes to it then looked to her when she dropped her hand back down.
"Was it okay that I touched you?"
She smiled at him, "If I wasn't okay then I wouldn't have let you do that. Besides…I wanted you to."
He wiggled his eyebrow and lowered his voice an octave deeper, "Oh yeah?"
She laughed. She dropped her eyes to their clasped hands. The next thing she wanted to say, she was too afraid to even look at him for.
"It's okay if you wanted to kiss me," She whispered.
For a moment, there was silence. She knew he wanted to kiss her. That was evident with the way he kissed her the first time and the way he almost kissed earlier. But the silence between them was pressuring. She thought maybe she had crossed a line somewhere. Maybe she wasn't supposed to say that.
Hellboy couldn't help the silence. When she had said that it was almost as if all of his thoughts but her disappeared. He recognized that it took a lot for her to say it. To say that it was okay if he wanted to kiss her. He knew the next step was his to take. The silence stretched.
His other hand went up, the stoned hand almost the size of her head. His fingers wrapped to the back of her head. He turned her head to his gently.
"Do you want to kiss me?"
She had no words. She nodded. That gave him what he needed so he pulled her head. They met in the space between them. For one second, they both hesitated, lips inches apart. Then they moved and their lips touched.
About fucking time.
