No footsteps were heard as the shadowy being walked slowly through the dark void in the direction of a little ball of light floating in the nothingness.

'What is this?' Thought the dark figure in wonder. 'Actually, where am I? Who... who am I?'

It was unknown how long this being stared at the ball of light, pondering the myriad of questions assaulting its mind, as the void showed no signs of change or disturbance, unfazed by its seemingly only inhabitant turmoil.

"Hello sweety" A feminine voice suddenly appeared from the dark.

Startled, the shadow looked towards the sound of the voice. A woman dressed in white robes was smiling with a warm look in her vibrant green eyes.

"Hello" the shadow answered, "I would introduce myself, but it seems as I can't remember my name at moment, what is yours?"

"I have no name, for I have never needed one" the woman calmly said as her smile widened a little and her eyes softened. "However, if you must know who and what I am, I am Death" she stated looking at the eyes of the shadow.

After some time in which neither made a sound, the shadow spoke again.

"I see, so I'm dead."

"Yes, sweety you are" She answered without losing her smile and caring eyes.

"Do you know my name?" He asked.

"I do, but I feel it's better you don't remember, after all, that is part of your pass life and your next one waits for you" she said while shifting her eyes towards the shining ball of light.

"I guess that makes sense... say, why am I so calm right now? I am in front of Death herself and I only feel a warm, soothing feeling".

"You say it like you should fear me, however, even though I represent the end of all things, I am also the one to guide your new beginning" She answered with an amused expression "and besides, my sweet child, as of now you are now a soul, and one who knows it has done good in the world and doesn't have to fear retribution from me"

The shadow stared at the light for a few moments before turning towards Death once again. "Do you speak with every soul once they die?" It asked suddenly.

"You are the first actually, I designed the reincarnation process to be automatic, and the souls that do end up in the void are not sentient, and after a bit of time they just walk towards the light" She answered with a slightly sad tone.

More time passed before the Soul asked another question. "Does it get lonely?"

"A little bit, but I have been doing this since the begining of time and will keep doing it until the end of time itself" She answered truthfully.

"I've been looking at this little ball of light for a while now" he said while closing its eyes. "I know that if I touch this I will be reincarnated, however I know that it's not the time yet, I can feel it" he added.

Death stood without moving and looking at the peculiar soul with curiosity.

"Can I say with you until its time?"

Death, for the first time in her eternal existence, was gob smacked. Looking at the soul in front of her, she could feel the warm and soothing sensation It talked about, she knew where it came from, of course, it was a bond between them, forged and nurtured in the Soul's previous life. It was not important anymore, as it was just a reminder of the bond and would not be transferred to its next life, but it was a nice feeling, nonetheless. So, after thinking about it for a couple of minutes, she answered with a grin on her face. "You know what, sure. It will be nice having a companion for once for a little while".

It was impossible to know how much time the two spent together. At first they only overwatched the multiverse without talking too much, then after a few months, Death started commenting about things that she thought noteworthy, like "Look, the oldest star in that galaxy is about to die" or "And there it goes, that was the last living being in that planet" sometimes she would get annoyed because a planet exploded in a war of its inhabitants and, according to Death, first: "This is such an overload of work" while closing her eyes for a couple of seconds and opening them again, with her job finished; and second: "It was not the time for those souls, they could have been much more".

After a couple of years, Death started showing the Soul the universes she liked the most, a lot of them were incredibly unique. "I really like these universes, the mortals are very strong and have very interesting abilities, however, the rate at what those mortals were dying was ridiculous, had to make an afterlife that regulated the whole universe, for each seven of those universes…" It was one of those instances that culminated in going into the rabbit hole that was videogames: "Oh this is one of my favorites, the whole world runs in a system of skills, like the videogames of other worlds and universes."

"What are videogames" Asked the Soul.

Years had passed since he made that innocent question, and it spiraled into playing game after game because "Wow! Games really are more fun if you play with someone" as stated by Death. There was no genre of games left unplayed by the two, from boardgames to shooters, date sims to rogue-likes, but the one they enjoyed the most were RPG games. In those the Soul really shined (actually shined according to Death), and even though she would not do as good as the Soul, Death enjoyed seeing the thought process of It.

It was after a rather competitive game of Mario Kart, which had ended with Death cursing the 'damned shells', that the Soul stood up and looking at Death in the eyes and confirmed what she suspected happened a few days ago already: "It is time for me, I feel it".

Death looked at what now was the only being she had ever had a bond with, one of servitude from his previous life, but more importantly one of friendship for the first time in her eternal life. She stood up and walked towards the Soul, stopping in front of It and surprising it with a hug. After a moment she let It go, smiling.

"I know, I will miss you" she said while walking with the Soul towards the ball of light. "Once you touch it you will begin to fall asleep, and when you wake up, you will be in your new world" Her index finger started to glow with a red light and as she touched where the Soul's forehead would have been she said "don't come back too quickly okay? Enjoy your life, I'm not going to say be a good person because I really don't care, as long as you are not a 'horrible' person (by my standards) I won't be forced to punish you when you die. I gave you a gift, well a few gifts, as a thank you for your company for these few years."

The Soul eye smiled at her while its shadowy hand approached the light ball.

"I will be back, thank you for allowing me to be with you all this time. I will not forget this and do watch my world, okay? I'll try and make it enjoyable for you." It laughed a little and finally pushed its hand into the light, instantly feeling its eyes heavy and its consciousness go into the dark. The last thing it saw was Death black lips moving saying:

"As your final gift, I bestow upon you a name" she said with a smirk "I, Death, the End and the Beginning, give you the name of…" was the final thing the Soul heard before darkness overcome It.
