Jennifer walked in and opened the door, she looked around for All Might and there he was, sitting on the couch of the teacher's lounge. He had told her that he needed to see her after training, she didn't know what for because as far as she knows, she hasn't caused any problems or gotten into any trouble but whatever he wanted to see her for, she was going to find out.
"Um, Mr. All Might? You in here?"
He turned and smiled at the young Meta, "Ah, young Jennifer, you finally found your way here"
"Yeah, Iida had to show me the way since I can't really remember the locations of this whole place by heart yet. So, um, you said you wanted to see me right?"
"Why, yes, I did. Have a seat"
Jennifer sat on the couch and looking straight at the former number 1 hero waiting to hear what he has to say.
"How are you, young Jennifer?" He asked.
"Uh, fine I guess?"
"How are you enjoying UA so far? I know you've been here for a month now"
"I don't exactly hate it here but I'm starting to get used to liking it here at least. At least most of my classmates are pretty cool and my teacher Mr. Aizawa, well, I'm neutral on him" She explained.
"I see" He took a sip of his tea. "That's good to hear that you're getting along with people here considering you're far away from home and old school. I'm sure you miss everyone there"
"Yeah, pretty much, I like it here in Japan but Freeland is always going to be my home. I just hope my fam and friends are doing fine over there since I'm not really with them"
He nodded and continued to listen to her.
"Sooo, you just called me down here to play 100 questions?" She joked.
Toshinori chuckled, "Well, kinda. I've been talking to your father"
"For real? Don't tell me y'all are besties now" She joked.
"Well, he is a good man, I'll admit. But the reason I was asking you all these questions is because I wanted keep your father updated on how you're doing since he always worries if you're okay over there."
Jennifer wasn't surprised at all, her and Jeff always were close so it wasn't shocking that he would always call Toshinori about her. She didn't want to admit it but she thought it was very sweet of him to do that. That let her know he still cared about her enough to check up on her while she's away from home.
Jennifer smiled, "Yeeeah, I knew he was gonna do that. That's my dad for you" she shrugged.
"Hm," He then nodded. "He sounds like a great father, you must feel lucky"
Jen chuckled, "Oh yeah, trust me I do"
"Just so you know, the reason why he always contacts me asking about you is because he wants me to look out for you"
Jen raised an eyebrow, "Wait why?" She understood Jeff gets worried about her but she found it a bit embarrassing that he had someone she's only knew for a few weeks look out for her, she can look out for herself she thought.
"Isn't it obvious, Young Jennifer? He gets worried about you and wants to know if you're fine"
"No, I get that, I totally get that, but why'd he choose you? Y'all go way back or something?"
"Well, yes, kinda, I was on world tour long time ago probably before you were born and Freeland was one of those places I visited for a little while, that's when I met your father, who is Black Lightning, correct?"
"Yeeeah? But-"
"Don't worry, your father's identity is safe with us. No one in your home town, Freeland will be able to find out"
"Oh, okay, thank God!" She sighed in relief.
"There was this huge incident that went on at that time that I met him and I helped him out with that situation. I believe that it went on for about a week or two, not really sure how long but something to that extent"
"Wait, but he never told me about that" She said, confused. Then she let out a chuckle and head shake, "Wow, just wow. I guess there's a lot of things I didn't know. I wouldn't be surprised if he has more stories he didn't tell me about"
"Trust me, I'm sure he has more, especially during his glory days as Black Lightning" He took another sip of his tea. "Anyway, the reason why he chose me to look out for you is because I'm one of the closest people he trusts, plus I live here so it'll be more easier for me to check up on and look out for you frequently."
Jennifer nodded, understanding as he explained this to her. "Hey um, no offense, I appreciate you watching out for me and all but I think I can manage on my own, thank you sir"
Toshinori sighed and rubbed the back of his neck, Jefferson was right that his daughter would have that response as soon as he told her this when he spoken to him on the phone at some point and he was going to have to deal with the stubborn part of her personality for the rest of the next few years of being in UA high school. However, although he admired the fact that she's independent and wants to look out for herself like she said, that did not mean he was going to go against Jeff's wishes and not look out for her just because she feels that she doesn't need it. Jeff was his friend and he cared about Jennifer as much as he did, he was gonna make sure he would look out for her and be there for her, not just for Jeff's sake but for her sake as well.
"Ah your father told me you were going to say that, while I get why you feel that way and it's completely understandable, but I promised your father that I would look out for you. I know how much he loves you and wants you to be okay while being here, so it wouldn't be right for me to go against his wishes and not do that so I hope you can understand that"
After listening to what he said to her, she knew that he was right in what he just told her just now and the fact that he promised her dad that he would look after her, she wasn't going to lie but that warmed her heart to be completely honest. That's when she had second thoughts about what she said about not needing anyone to look out for her but herself, she then began to feel that she was ungrateful for saying that because then she thought about her old hometown, some of the kids don't have anyone to looking out for them and their wellbeing and some of them even have to raise themselves because there was no one there for them or there to protect them while she had people around her who loved and cared about her enough to worry about her wellbeing to the point where they had to ask someone to check up on how she's doing every single day.
"Thinking about something?"
She smiled in response and nodded, "Yeah, I am, just thinking about what you had just said to me. I just realized how lucky I am that I have folks around me that care about me so when you mentioned that you promised my dad that you would look after me, I reconsidered about what I said about not needing anyone to watch over me, I feel kinda, excuse my language, shitty and ungrateful for saying that and for that, I'm sorry"
"No need to apologize, I understand why you felt the way you did"
"No, really I should be thanking you instead, Mr. All Might, I'm grateful for you honest"
"Well, you're welcome, young Jennifer. I appreciate it dearly"
"So, I guess you're kind of like gonna be my mentor or something?" Jennifer asks, chuckling.
"Yes, kind of, especially since you said your first one is busy with helping other people with their quirks and won't be around as much"
Then she thought about Izuku, she just realized that Toshinori also mentors him as well.
"Wait, but I just remembered something, ain't you Izuku's mentor as well? Are you sure you can handle mentoring the both of us? I mean, won't that stress you out?"
"Of course I can, no need to worry about me, young Jennifer"
She shrugged, "Well, okay then, if you say so"
"So, um, moving on, so tell me. How is your quirk been holding up lately? Are you still having some kind of trouble with them?"
"I mean, I used to at the beginning when I first got them a while back before I came here but now? They've been working actually better than before, I learned to control and how to use them thanks to Perenna, A telepathic therapist who I was seeing for a while to learn to keep them in tact, she's actually really helped me a lot. I don't know where is she now but it's pretty obvious she's probably helping out someone else who had the same issue I did with my quirk" Jennifer explained all of this. She mentally cringed using the word "Quirk", she just didn't think it was the best way to describe her electric abilities but she followed along anyways as she was trying to get used to and blend in with a new environment.
"I see" says Toshinori. "I'm glad they're working out well for you young Jennifer, I see a bright future for you"
"You know, I think so too. Before everything, when I first got them, I felt like a complete freak, I didn't want anything to do with them and I just wanted to be, what you call, just a 'normal' girl, Not any of the hero stuff, but then as time went on, I kinda learned to except and embrace them" She smiled and nodded. "And also, I wanna help people and like wanna be a hero now, like my dad and sister are"
"And you will be, you just have to work really hard"
Jennifer chuckled, "Yeah I know that, it's gonna be a long journey for me, I know"
"Trust me, I think it'll be worth it. It was for young Midoriya, he's come a long way but that is for him to tell you himself since both of you seem to be really good friends"
"Yeah, kinda, he's definitely one of the people I'm getting close to, he was one of the first people that was welcoming to me when I first came here but I don't think we're close enough yet to the point where we tell each other everything. He'll probably tell me when he's ready"
"I'm sure he will, so is there anything else you want to talk about?"
"Actually… yeah no, I got nothing else. I'm fine"
"Are you sure?" he asked. "If there's anything else bothering you, let me know"
"Yeah I'm sure and there's nothing else on my mind that's bothering me, aye no offense but you're starting to sound like my dad right now" she chuckled.
He looked down in embarrassment, "Oh, my apologies"
"It's fine, I kinda expected that a little. Well, I hate to cut this short and would like to chat more, but I guess I should be going, I got a math exam, I'll see you around, Mr. All Might" She got up and took her book bag with her, getting ready to leave.
"Alright, take care young Jennifer and remember, if you need someone to talk to, don't be afraid to come to me" He smiled with a thumbs up.
She smiled back and nodded, "Yeah you too, Mr. All Might, I'll see you later" With that, she left his office to go do what she has to do.
She's a good kid, he thought, Jefferson raised her well and he was gonna make sure that he kept his promise to look after her. Hopefully, she won't be too stubborn to the point where she wouldn't listen to him about certain or serious things when they have an important conversation like this one that they had just now. He can only hope but right now, it seems that she was listening and holding a conversation with him pretty well despite that it was the first one they had, and he hopes she'll stay that way when it comes to things like this but he knows she won't always will, it's just something he'll have to get used to.
He pulled out his cell phone, went into his contacts and chose the name "Jeff", it began to ring and thankfully he picked it up.
"Hello?"
"Hello, hey Jefferson"
"Oh hey Toshinori, how you've been?"
"Pretty good actually" He smiled, "I spoke with your daughter just now"
"Really?! Tell me how is she?"
"Oh trust me, I have a lot to tell you about her"
