Chapter 5: Training Day 1
Today is my first day of training. I woke up to Effie pounding on the door yelling "Big big day!" I groaned, rubbing my eyes. Does she have to be so loud in the morning? I wanted to go back to sleep so I laid back down and pulled the covers over me. I whined when I heard another knock on the door.
"Lana? Time to get up." I heard Adam say.
"Leave me alone," I grumbled, pulling the covers up.
"Come on. This is serious." Adam said as he grabbed my leg. He attempted to drag me out of bed but I held on the headboard tightly.
"LANA DIANE O'HARA!" Adam yelled at the top of his lungs. Oh shit. He used my full name. Whenever someone uses my full name it means that I'm in big trouble. And yes, my middle name is Diane. I never told you guys that in any of my other stories. It's never too late to reveal it now.
"I'm up, damn," I said.
"Good. And you better watch you're attitude, young lady. We're in the Capitol here." Adam scolded me. Adam didn't say another word before leaving the room, slamming the door behind him. Before I got yelled at more, I got my training clothes on which were a black zip-up jumpsuit with the number 12 on each side of my shoulders. I walked in, looking like a zombie as I got my breakfast. I did not sleep well at all last night.
"What the hell happened to you?" Miles asked me as I sat down.
"I stayed up all night, I couldn't get any sleep," I said.
"How come?" Blake asked me. I couldn't help but feel a surge of anger. Is my family seriously asking me why I didn't sleep last night after all the shit that has happened the past week? I'm about to fight to the death in two weeks!
"I've been through a lot of shit the past week and you're seriously asking why I didn't sleep last night?" I snapped.
"Hey..." Yang said, growling a bit and clenching her teeth. She sighed and then spoke in a calmer tone. "I know you're going through a tough time right now, sweetie. But that shouldn't excuse being rude to people. I know this has been... tough for you. But I want you to know we're here for you." Yang said.
"Thanks, Mom," I said. Yang's right. I shouldn't be taking my anger out on people just because I am going through a rough time. After we finished our breakfast, Effie took us down to the training area where we would be doing our training for the next two weeks. I gasped when I looked at the training area. This place is so big. There were lots of weapons on the walls. Obstacles and stations were laid out in the room. Our instructor, Atala was explaining to us how the games and training worked.
"In two weeks, 23 of you will be dead. One of you will be alive. Who that is depends on how well you pay attention over the next four days, particularly to what I'm about to say. First, no fighting with the other Tributes. You'll have plenty of time for that in the arena. There are four complicacy exercises. The rest will be individual training. My advice is don't ignore the survival skills. Everybody wants to grab a sword, but most of you will die from natural causes. 10% from infection, 20% from dehydration. Exposure can kill as easily as a knife."
With that, Atala sent us off to training. Most of the Tributes practiced with their weapons. Some of them spent their time on the obstacles. The girl from District 5 was doing a puzzle game on one of the computers. I saw some Tributes at the fire station. I spent my time training with team RWBY. Miguel and Salem helped me with the training too. Everything was going fine until Miguel started going rough on me.
"Do you think those Tributes will show you mercy in the arena!?" Miguel yelled as he slashed his claws at me. His claws struck me in the face, causing me to fall back. Yang threw a punch at me but I managed to dodge it. I jumped out of the way just in time as Weiss and Ruby attacked me with their weapons. Miguel threw a hard punch at me that caused me to fall into the wall. I lay down on the ground, unable to move.
"Get up." Miguel spat. I had a hard time getting up. Miguel kicked at my ribs. "I said, get up! You don't have time to lay around in the arena!" He yelled.
"Miguel, come on." Uncle Peter said.
"She needs to be ready," Miguel said.
"But this isn't the right way to do it. You're hurting her." Gwen said. Ruby and Weiss helped me up.
"Are you okay?" Weiss asked me.
"Yeah. I think so. But I have a headache." I said.
"I think you should take a break for a bit," Ruby said. Yang picked me up and carried me to one of the tables. Gwen and Yang tented to my wound that Miguel caused. I know Miguel has changed, but does he really need to go rough on me?
"Ow..." I said when Gwen applied the medicine on my face.
"I'm sorry, sweetie. I'll be done soon." Gwen said. When I was all patched up, I took a few minutes to rest. After some time of resting, my parents asked me if I was up for training again.
"You ready?" Miles said.
"Yeah. I think so. But I don't want to fight." I said.
"Okay. What do you want to do?" Pyrrha asked.
"I wanna try that," I said, pointing to the obstacles with the monkey bars. I made my way to the obstacle and got in line where I met my dad, Peeta.
"Hi, Dad," I said.
"Hey," Peeta said. "How's it going?"
"It's going okay. Miguel is being rough on me though." I said.
"That's not good," Peeta said.
"Yeah," I said. For the rest of the training today, I decided to distance myself from my husband. I watched the kids finish the obstacle while we were waiting in line. One of the Tributes fell down. He grunted in pain, holding his leg in pain. Damn, that has to hurt. Now it was Peeta's turn to go. He was able to finish the obstacle course without falling down. Before I knew it, it was my turn.
As I took a step up, I noticed how high it was. It was... pretty freaking high. I know I can fly, but still.
"What's wrong?" Weiss said.
"It looks... high," I said.
"Come on, you've been in high places before," Pavitr said.
"Yeah... I know." I said.
"You can do it." Uncle Peter said.
"Okay. Just gotta hype myself up first." I said. People who were waiting in line were getting impatient because I was taking a long time, but I honestly did not care. After I got myself hyped up and ready to go, I gave it a go. I did a big swing across the bars. I was doing well until I lost my grip. I made a pretty rough landing on the ground. I grabbed my leg in pain. I'm pretty sure I screwed it up.
"Owwww!" I screamed. Some of the Tributes turned to my direction. I tried to hide my face when the boy from District 2 looked at me. Team RWBY ran up to me. Ruby and Yang looked pretty concerned.
"Oh my gosh, are you okay?!" Ruby shouted.
"My leg hurts, Mommy," I said.
"Can you stand?" Yang asked. I struggled to stand up. I grabbed onto Yang for some support as she helped me up. I can stand on my leg so I don't think it is broken, thankfully. I decided I was done with this station so I went to a different station. I did the same one as my mom, which was the sword fighting station. As we were waiting in line, the boy from District 2 was having a fit. Everyone turned towards him.
"Jason, where's my knife, huh?!" He screamed at some kid.
"I didn't touch your knife!" Jason shouted.
"I put my knife right there! Don't touch me!" The boy from District 2 screamed as some peacekeepers ran to grab a hold of him.
"I didn't touch your knife!" Jason shouted again.
"Yes, you took my knife!" The boy from District 2 screamed again.
"I didn't touch your knife!" Jason shouted again.
"You took my knife, you liar! You liar!" The boy screamed. More peacekeepers ran over to him to restrain him. As He struggled against the peacekeepers, he continued screaming. "You little punk! He took my knife! Get off me!"
"I'm just sitting here," Jason said. I looked up above me and saw the girl from District 11. Her name is Rue I think. She had black bushy hair, a dark-skin tone, and brown eyes. Rue was hiding in the net in the ceiling. I saw that she was holding District 2's missing knife. I admired Rue. She had some nerve in taking a weapon from a career.
District 2's screams continued to fill the room as the peacekeepers were dragging him away. "I'll finish you right now, kid! Actually, better yet, I'll wait for the Arena. You're the first one I get so watch you're back, huh?!"
I couldn't help but smirk. Katniss smirked too. Thresh, the boy from District 11 smiled and crossed his arms when he saw young Rue hiding in the net. As soon as the boy from District 2 was gone, Atala blew the whistle. "Everybody, back in line!" Atala shouted. We all got back in line to finish our training.
"You don't know who you're messing with, kid!" District 2 screamed as he stormed out of the room. I looked at Katniss who just shrugged.
"Just ignore him," Katniss said.
"That kid from 11 has some nerve," Hobie said.
"Yeah, she sure does," I said. When we finished our training for the day, I went up to our quarters to go take a shower. I love long showers after fighting and training. I took an extra-long shower because I haven't had a shower this nice in months. Back in District 12, we didn't have showers. We just had to wash ourselves with buckets of water and pray the water was clean. When I finished with my shower I laid in bed for a bit before I changed my clothes. I got a comfy pink shirt on with some black leggings and wore a choker necklace.
"Lana. Dinner's ready." Ren called.
"Okay. Be right there." I said. When we gathered around at the table, I helped myself to some chicken and pasta. As we were eating our dinners, Haymitch was explaining to us who the boy from District 2 was.
"He's a career? You know what that is?" Haymitch said.
"From District 1. And 2." Katniss said.
"They train in a special academy until they're 18. Then they volunteer. By that point, they're lethal." Haymitch explained.
"But they don't have any special treatment... In fact, they stay in the exact same apartment as you do. And I don't think they let them have dessert. And you can." Effie said.
"So how good are they?" Katniss asked.
"Obviously they're pretty good. They win it almost every year, but..." Haymitch stammered.
"Almost." Effie chimed in.
"...they can be arrogant. And arrogance can be a big problem. I hear you can shoot." Haymitch said.
"I'm alright," Katniss said.
"And I hear you can fly and control the weather, Lana," Haymitch said.
"Heh, yeah." I chuckled.
"No, they're better than all right. My father buys her squirrels. He says she hits them right in the eye every time." Peeta says. I can tell Peeta is getting agitated. I was gonna say something, but Katniss beat me to it.
"He's strong," Katniss said.
"What?" Peeta said.
"He can throw a 100-pound sack of flour right over his head. I've seen it." Katniss said.
"Okay, well, I'm not gonna kill anybody with a sac of flour," Peeta said.
"No, but you might have a better chance at winning if somebody comes after you with a knife," Katniss said. What Katniss said pushed Peeta over the edge. He slammed his fists against the table.
"I have no chance of winning! None! All right?" Peeta shouted. "It's true. Everybody knows it. You know what my mother said? She said District 12 might finally have a winner. But she wasn't talking about me. She was talking about you. And especially Lana. She kept going on and on about Lana's powers." Peeta said angrily. I felt a few tears forming in my eyes. Salem put a hand on my shoulder.
"Don't listen to him. He's just jealous." Salem whispered.
"I'm not very hungry," Peeta said. With that, Peeta stormed off. It stayed silent for a long moment after that. I nervously picked at my food. I hate it when people argue especially my parents. Parents fighting stresses me out.
"I'm done too," Katniss said. Katniss got up and stormed off. After their fight, I think I have lost my appetite.
"I'm finished," I said, pushing the plate away.
"But you haven't finished the rest of your food..." Miles said worriedly.
"I said I'm done!" I yelled. I got up from the table and stormed off. I slammed the door behind me once I got to my room.
"We do not slam doors!" I heard Jefferson yell from outside my room. I just rolled my eyes. I don't really care what anyone has to say at this point. Right now, I just need to focus on one thing.
And that is making it out of the Hunger Games alive.
