A/N: Here is Chapter 2. It's a bit shorter but still very important. This starts the ball rolling for the first plot of this story-and obsticle. I do have an idea of how to progresss eventually, and I may take some ideas from others but only the very basic idea. The rest will be all me. The idea will give me muse but it will not copy any one. As for the Lin x Mai story in the works, I'm still working on the first chapter. It's going to be a long one!
Notes: So Mai in my story is going to be a little OOC. This is Mai x Gene. Just stick with it. It will tell the story of a truly desperate soul searching to save another.
Disclaimer: I do not own Ghost Hunt. Period. If I did, the romance would have been more fleshed out and Mai wouldn't have been so childish all the time.
Chapter 2
Mai sighed as she continued to go through her routine and the motions. The gaping hole she felt within her chest only continued to fester. She would wake up, go to school, come home and do her homework–at least on her days off. Then she would go to sleep and then the cycle repeats again. On the days she worked, it was much of the same, only she'd go to work after school and complete her homework there. The feeling of incompleteness only grew and soon her sleepful nights were sleepless or restless. She often woke with strong feelings of yearning. She needed answers. She needed to know why this was happening and her gut–her intuition–told her that Gene would have those answers. So as she finally laid down once more she deviated from her routine. She allowed her mind, heart and even soul to call for Gene and beg him to meet her on the plane.
She wasn't sure if this would work, but she would try. When she fell asleep and once more opened her eyes, she nearly felt relieved and relaxed. The astral plane was a welcome site, and seeing Gene approach her made her soul sing in happiness. IT was jarring how…whole she suddenly felt. Gene's eyes met hers and he smiled sadly, realizing that somehow Mai knows. She knows how connected they are. And how tragic they are too.
"Gene," she whispered, relief and longing in her voice.
Gene moved forward and pulled her close, holding her. He breathed her in, closing his eyes. "Mai."
He didn't say another word, just basking in her aura and how it seemed to compliment his own perfectly. Not even Noll's aura had complimented his own so closely. He pulled back slightly and leaned down, kissing her forehead affectionately. He felt Mai shiver slightly and pulled her close again, holding her.
"Why does it hurt when I'm awake?" she whispered, almost brokenly. "I feel…incomplete. Wrong."
"I suspect you already know that answer, Mai," Gene said softly, his eyes sad. "Go on. You can say it."
"I don't know. I just know that the feeling doesn't go away or stop until I'm in your presence somehow. I don't know why. But I know it's true," Mai admitted.
Gene regarded her and sighed, pulling away to think. "I understand what's happening…but I don't know too many details. I had heard rumors but nothing concrete. At least while I was alive. But when I died…I saw an entire life I never would have. And it broke my own heart, Mai. That I couldn't ever have that. Or have you."
"I almost think we're sort of soulmates? Like in those fantasy manga I've read," Mai sighed, eyes downcast.
Gene's lips curled into a small melancholy smile." We sort of are. I don't know the details, but I know our souls are connected. And if we had met when I was alive…we could have been so much more."
"And why can't we be more?" Mai huffed. "No one will know. And I just…there's no one else for me, Gene. I know this deep down. No man would ever compare or turn my head. Not even Naru."
"Mai that's dangerous. It could lead to you wanting to be here more than the waking world. And I will never endanger you simply because I selfishly want you."
"Maybe I already think that way," Mai argued. "Maybe I go to sleep hoping I don't need to wake up again simply so I can stay with you. Even if it means I'm no longer breathing in the waking world."
Gene flinched at those words, never wanting her to give up living because of him. "Sorumeito. That's what it is called…what I've heard it called by other spirits. It basically means soul mate…soul partner. But I don't understand what it means if one of us is already dead."
Mai moved over to Gene and hugged him tightly, her head on his chest. Gene wrapped his arms around her, holding her. Mai closed her eyes and just enjoyed their souls touching. Because she knew that was what this was. Soul touching.
"Gene…may I kiss you?" she asked quietly. "I don't want to continue without at least experiencing this love. Even if I can only have it when I sleep."
Gene swallowed, feeling his heart pound. For her. Finally he titled her head up and leaned forward. He brushed his lips against her own before the damn seemed to break and their lips crashed together in hungry passion. He pulled her impossibly closer, feeling every point of her body against his own as he kissed her, pouring all his love, frustration, and longing into the action. Mai kissed him back with just as much emotion if not more and clung to him tightly. Finally the kiss ended and they rested their foreheads against each other, but didn't separate.
"No one can ever come close to how I feel for you," Mai told him seriously. "And no one ever will."
It was in this moment that Mai made her choice. She would continue to be with Gene here and when she's awake, she'd research their bond and also try to find a way to bring him back…or somehow send herself back as well.
Even if it would cost her own life…and soul. Even if it means she'd ultimately lose him despite him being alive.
A/N: There's the second chapter. I'll be taking my time with this. I'm also rewatching Ghost Hunt because I have plans for this one. Read, review, and give me case ideas! 3
