A/N: Here is Chapter 4. No need to say anything else :)
Notes: So Mai in my story is going to be a little OOC. This is Mai x Gene. Just stick with it. It will tell the story of a truly desperate soul searching to save another.
Disclaimer: I do not own Ghost Hunt. Period. If I did, the romance would have been more fleshed out and Mai wouldn't have been so childish all the time.
Chapter 4
Mai was surprised that the others hadn't noticed a change in her behavior. She was losing some sleep researching and trying to find an answer. She had to save Gene…somehow. Maybe even turn back time. But nothing was helping. There were myths…legends…but nothing concrete. She sighed as she closed the book once more, looking out the window.
"If you continue to think so hard, you'll lose brain cells."
She felt her ire rise as she turned and glared at Naru. "I'm just studying."
She didn't elaborate. As far as she's concerned, he can believe she's studying for school.
"I suppose that helps you feel smarter."
"Why you–"
"Mai, tea."
She growled as he moved back into his office, glaring at his door and imagining throwing a tea cup at him. But she couldn't resort to violence. Why does he do this to her? Before the teasing was fun but lately it's been weighing her down and making her feel…tired. Suddenly the door opened and a woman stepped inside, wringing her hands.
"Hello there," Mai greeted with a kind smile. "Welcome to Shibuya Psychic Research. I am Mai. How can we help you today?"
The woman looked at Mai and for a moment, she felt as if her entire soul was bared before her. Mai blinked but didn't drop her kind demeanor.
"Yes…I believe my home is haunted and I was hoping for some help," she said.
Mai nodded and heard Naru leave his office along with Lin. "I'll make some tea."
She slipped into the kitchen and made sure to make tea for all of them. Then she slipped back into the main room and set the tea upon the small table near the couches. She offered the woman a smile and a cup of tea.
"Thank you," the woman said. "I am Takiko Aumi. I live in a home that has been in my family for many generations. Lately, I've felt as if spirits are lingering in our home. We have a shrine on the property, but…it was vandalized by some local kids some time ago. We fixed everything, but since then there seemed to be things happening in the house."
"What sort of things?" Naru asked, not looking too interested.
Mai felt her hackles rise some. She felt strongly they needed to look into this. She couldn't describe why….
"Furniture moving at first…then I started to wake up with bruises and even cuts on my body. The rooms feel oppressive, and thick. I do not feel safe in my home. Just the other day I found my cat dead in the living room."
Mai shivered at those words as she continued to take notes. She could feel Lin's shiki and how they seemed uneasy as well. Naru glanced at Lin and then back at the woman.
"Leave your information with Mai, and we will come over to check out the home this weekend. I suggest you sleep elsewhere until then," he told her.
The woman looked relieved and nodded, turning to Mai. Naru stood along with Lin, and both returned to their offices. Aumi looked at Mai with knowing eyes as Mai took down her information.
"Your soul weeps," She said quietly.
Mai froze and glanced at her in surprise. "I...what?"
"Your soul. It isn't whole...and it knows it. It's crying," she said simply. "I can see auras. Yours is full of pain. It's missing something...it was torn away. But there's a shadow of completeness. Which is odd. It's not something I've seen before."
Mai swallowed and smiled sadly. "My soulmate died before we could physically meet...I met his spirit one day and just...I knew."
Her eyes showed pain. As if she understood. "I am so sorry to hear that child."
Mai nodded but didn't say anything further. She didn't want to tell anyone...let alone someone who seemed to know more than she should. Mai finished setting up for the case as she was asked to do, then the woman left. But Mai still felt that someone knew everything. She knew what she was planning...not just what she was missing.
A/N: There's the fourth chapter. Sorry this took so long! I'm a univeristy student, work full time, and have two kids and a husband lol so I'll be taking my time with this. I'm also rewatching Ghost Hunt because I have plans for this one. Read, review, and give me case ideas! 3
