Hey everyone!
If anyone reading is a long-timer, you probably know what my least favorite month of the year is, and let me tell you, this February is shaping up to be a doozy.
The weather here, they call it a "polar vortex" (cool name for such lousy weather) meaning basically, it is freezing. A group of kids on my street made a snowman yesterday, but in the morning it was gone. Four witnesses claim they saw it board a bus for Miami.
Of course, my folks, my brother, sister-in-law, niece, and myself all have colds, and the electric bill is going to be really bad this month given how much we're using the heat.
Hopefully, it will get better. Until then, here's a new chapter. To everyone who has to deal with this brutal weather, stay safe, stay warm.

How did I get into this mess?
Wait, hold on, let me retrace my steps here.
Jenni installed a new AI training simulator, I tried it out and I lost. I decided to blow off steam by going to a fast food place. Met this orthodontist named Otto (yeah, it seems there are parents who still name their kids that) who claimed to be an amateur duelist. When I left, I forgot my knapsack with my Duel Disk - and deck - inside it. I panicked, but it turned out Otto was a Good Samaritan type who saw it and rushed to give it back to me. So, when he asked to duel me, seeing as the train was delayed, I decided to comply. Only to find that this supposed novice had some very powerful cards that I'd never heard of.
So… I guess I do know how I got into this mess… But why I got into this mess was something else entirely, and I intended to figure that out.
Chapter Three
"Something Seemed Different…"
"Get me the file on this Terone kid."
In the dark room where the group of well-dressed men were watching the duel, the request came from the one in charge, the one sitting down with the best view of the screen. One of the aides in the room nodded and went to do so, and the others, well, the others didn't react much, but they knew this was a good sign.
The boss was a man who was not easily impressed, and it was very difficult to tell when he was impressed. His tone and expression were impossible to read - he had been doing this for a very long time.
Still, they knew that when he asked for more information, it was a good sign.

As far as duels went, I wasn't in the best situation at the moment, though I also wasn't in the worst. Trouble is, most of the worse situations I'd been in were in duels I had lost.
I had one of my strongest monsters in play, Tyrant Dragon, and he had managed to wipe out both of Otto's Ritual Monsters - er excuse me, Fusion versions of Ritual Monsters - in one blow. Unfortunately, the effect of one of them had reduced his Attack Score to zero, while the effect of the other had summoned Sengenjin from the Graveyard. (2,750 ATK) Ironically, for a monster that was rarely used these days, the drooling, slobbering, armed-to-the-teeth ogre looming over me was pretty intimidating.

Only one thing I could do now: "I'm ending my turn."
"Okay, I draw, and -" started Otto. Then to my complete shock, Sengenjin disappeared into pixels. "Uh-huh, because I used Whirling Dervish Performance's effect to summon that one, it goes back to my hand this turn. Uh…" He looked over his three cards then set one on the Monster Zone of his Disk. "That's… it for now."
Seems I - and Tyrant Dragon - had been granted a reprieve. That was the problem with Ritual Monsters in general, seeing as you needed the Spell, the Monster, and the required sacrifices, a lot of luck was needed to avoid bad draws.
Unfortunately, my hand wasn't very good either. "Well, big guy, you can't attack, but at least you can defend." Tyrant Dragon nodded, and knelt, resting on its haunches. (2,500 DEF)
I set a monster of my own, hoping to use it later, and said, "It's your move."
"Nice, now stand back!" I figured he had something else up his sleeve given how he seemed even more enthusiastic now, and my assumption was proven right when the set monster disappeared. "I'll sacrifice this to summon… Choju of the Trillion Hands!"
"Say what?"
I admit, this was the first time I had ever even heard of this one. Sure, I knew about Senju of the Thousand Hands and its upgraded form, Majin of the Ten-Thousand Hands, so I could only assume this was a further upgrade.
The monster that appeared was like a Vishnu statue made of pure gold, tall, muscular, with a toga, holding a sword pointed down with two of its hands - and while it clearly didn't have a trillion, it had far more than two. I assume about twelve or so. "I… gotta admit, that's a beautiful card."
I had to tempt fate again. Two huge hands sprouted from beneath the creature, and then two disembodied arms appeared to each side of the statue. These arms each sprouted an additional arm from the palms, then two more sprouted from the palms of those arms, and again and again until there were layers of rotating perpendicular rings around the monster. (1,400 ATK)
"I take that back, that monster just ain't right."
"Yeah, I… see what you mean… Uh… Okay, using its effect now, by summoning him… uh, I think this is a 'him'… I can take both a Ritual Monster and a Ritual Spell from my deck." He got the two cards he needed, and then discarded one of them. "Then I will again, use the effect of Corrupted Summoning, which to reiterate, lets me discard a Ritual Spell or Monster and pay 1,600 Life Points to summon a Fusion counterpart. The Monster I'm discarding now is… Fortress Whale!"
"Oh, for the love of -" I started but was cut off as the shadow of a huge creature started to loom over Otto. For the first time tonight, I almost wished I was on the clock in a televised duel, because this was one of the coolest monsters I had seen in months. Much like Fortress Whale itself, this was a giant sperm whale with a narwhal's horn, but in this case, the horn had been armor-plated, like a giant steel bore. It had what looked like an entire mobile naval base on its back, a bridge tower, cannon turrets, and even missile launchers, with torpedo launchers on the underside. (2,800 ATK)
This is one of many times that I wondered if Pegasus had too many good ideas. While I figured that with both my monsters in Defense Mode, my Life Points were safe, I was quickly proven wrong – again. A barrage of artillery from the giant whale plowed into Tyrant Dragon, hitting me like a cinderblock to the stomach.

While I was peeling myself off the floor, Otto might have said something about how Fortress Whale Battleship had an effect that did burn damage equal to the destroyed monster's base Attack Score. It was hard to hear him over the daze my head was in, but I figured it out myself quickly. It was a good thing I had a chance to move Tyrant Dragon to Defense Mode.
I managed to sit up and declare, "I activate Keeper of the Shrine's effect again!" and the draconic statue appeared for the second time. (2,100 DEF)
It seemed Otto wasn't done, as a huge, golden hand, obviously from Choju, started to reach for my set monster, clearly with the intent to crush it in its grasp. The monster that appeared on the card was a knight in plate armor and a helmet that covered his face, a long, crimson cloak, and a metal shield. Fortunately, despite the hand being as large as he was, the shield seemed enough to stave off the attack. (1,400 DEF)
For now, at least.
"We're in dire straits here, sire. I doubt we can stand up to that thing for another turn."
I was a little startled to hear that come from Familiar Knight; hadn't gotten used to hearing them speak yet, though at least it wasn't as unsettling as before. "We'll get through this," I said, softly, "I have an idea."
I was lying, but at the time, I figured giving an AI-controlled hologram some false reassurance wasn't truly dishonesty. Truth be told, I had initially hoped to use his effect to summon Rare Metal Dragon again, as I had recovered it when I used Keeper's other effect four turns ago. Unfortunately, that was before I had realized what I was up against. Rare wouldn't be very good against that thing.
Unless…
"Uhm, it's your move, Terone."
I drew a card. Oh yeah, I thought. "I activate Fusion Recovery! By using this Spell Card, I can get back my Polymerization and a monster I previously used in a Fusion." I took the Spell along with Divine Dragon Ragnarok from my discard pile, but I wouldn't be using him right now. I had someone else in mind.
"Haven't used this one in a long time, but now is as good a time as any. I'll use Polymerization now to fuse together Familiar Knight with his friend Rare Metal Dragon…"
Familiar Knight stood up and Rare Metal Dragon appeared next to him. They both turned into pillars of darkness, which combined into a spiraling vortex.
There was a flash of light, and another knight appeared, similar to Familiar Knight but with fancier, heavier plate armor. His breastplate and larger shield were both shaped like Rare Metal Dragon's face, and his helmet covered his whole head, with a long, red plume. He knelt and held the shield in front of him. (2,400 DEF)
"Metal Dragoon, welcome to the duel. And I'll leave off there."
"Okay, here we go," said Otto. "I'll draw, and then my Battleship attacks!"
Like before, the giant whale-ship launched a barrage of burning hot death at the Fusion Warrior, but this time, the result was very different. Metal Dragoon crouched behind his shield, bracing himself as the artillery exploded around him… As the smoke cleared, the shield itself had a large crack in it, but he was still in one piece.
"Uh… huh…"
"By Fusion Summoning Metal Dragoon, he gains the ability to resist an attack twice. No matter how strong it is."
"Yeah, I… figured it was something like that. I'll set a monster and move Choju to Defense Mode. Then it's your go."
It was hard to see much difference in the monster despite the changed position. It had so many arms, it was hard to tell if it was blocking with them. (1,000 ATK)
I drew, and then Dragoon stood up, moving to Attack Mode. (2,400 ATK)
"I set one card, and then Metal Dragoon attacks Choju of the Trillion Hands!"
Fortunately, while Choju was larger than Dragoon, it wasn't nearly as strong. Drawing his sword, Dragoon made a quick slash at the Fairy, cleaving diagonally. It shattered into golden fragments, and the ring of golden arms surrounding it fell apart into the component arms, which all shattered in turn.
That was one obstacle out of my way, now I had to hope he took the bait. "Go on…" I said.
Making his draw, Otto simply said, "Hmm…"
"Hmm", was a hard word to read, it was hard to tell an insightful "Hmm" from a worried "Hmm".
"I'm flip summoning my Crystal Seer," he finally said. His set monster flipped up, bringing forth a tall Spellcaster in an outfit that suggested Arabian, a tightly fitting red robe with a blue sash and red cape, a blue veil and a red felt hat. Whether this was male or female, I had no clue, despite having used the card myself in more than one deck. (100 ATK)
Regardless, the Seer held its hands out in front, conjuring an orb out of blue magical energy. Two smaller orbs formed from it, and then both the smaller orbs blinked out of existence, leaving two cards in their place.
"That one will do," said Otto. He reached out and took the one on the left, the one on the right disappearing, going to the bottom of his deck. "Now I'm going to play the Cost Down Spell Card, I'll toss this card, and I can summon a Level 8 monster with only one sacrifice."
He didn't have to explain any further, I knew exactly what was coming. Crystal Seer dissolved into pixels, and - for the fourth time this duel - Sengenjin appeared. (2,750 ATK)
Biggest difference was, this time, nothing would prevent it from attacking. His intent seemed obvious - he was going to force me to use Dragoon's second counter by attacking with Sengenjin, and then attack with his Battleship to use its burn effect. But I had a surprise here. This had better work, I thought.
"Attack the Metal Dragoon!" he shouted, with the Battleship's Cannons homing in on my Warrior. "Mega Baleen Bombardment!"
Seems I had assumed wrong. Still, there was no reason my little surprise wouldn't work anyway.
"Activate Punch-in-the-Box!"
"What? A Trap?"
"One of my favorites, actually, this one never fails to get a reaction from the crowd!" The Trap caused a jack-in-the-box (I kid you not) to appear, the crank turning to the familiar tune of "Pop Goes the Weasel". The giant whale stopped, looking dumbfounded at the device, and just when the lyrics would say the word "Pop", the lid opened, causing a boxing glove to spring forward, smacking Fortress Whale Battleship between the eyes. It was a David striking against a Goliath, yet it still caused the behemoth to fall to the floor with a crash that shook the whole station.
"Silly, yes, but that card not only stops Fortress Whale Battleship's attack, it gets rid of one of your other monsters!"
Naturally, I made the choice for that part of the effect quickly, pointing to Sengenjin, causing it to shatter into minute shards.
"That's not all, by the way, now your Fortress Whale Battleship loses Attack Points equal to Senjengin's Attack Score." (50 ATK)
Nonetheless, Otto was chuckling softly. "Not bad, it's your turn."
I made a draw, and… What the fuck?

"This Terone kid was in the Duelist Kingdom Tournament last year?"
"Uhm, yeah, chief, that was, er -"
The boss seemed to change the subject quickly. "Does Mr. Brickman have any issues?"
"Uh, issues? You mean health or medical concerns? Well, pro dueling isn't exactly something I would advise for anyone with bad high blood pressure or -"
"Anything that stands out? Any social, legal, or psychological issues?"
"Not… that I know of."
He was asking a very awkward question, one that was hard to answer truthfully. Thankfully he didn't press the issue, he handed the file folder back to the aide and continued to concentrate on the duel.

It was fortunate I was a pro and had learned to condition myself not to cuss out loud during a duel. This card… I had never seen it before and certainly had never put it in my deck. My eyes looked up at Otto - I wondered if he was truly the good Samaritan I assumed.
I wasn't about to make any accusations - yet - but I wasn't about to take the bait either. The first order of business was this giant eyesore.
"Attack!" I shouted. "Shimmering Shadowsteel!" Then I thought of a way to make this perfect. "From Hell's heart, I stab at thee!"
Drawing his weapon, Metal Dragoon made a dramatic pose, and then rushed forward in a blur. He rushed past the behemoth, and as he turned back towards Fortress Whale Battleship again, its eyes bugged out and explosions ripped through its hull, before finally, it shattered.

Otto's reaction to this? He actually laughed. Not some sort of gloating, mocking tone, it was like he found all this amusing.
"Damn it," he laughed, "you sunk my battleship!"
I rolled my eyes. "You just had to make that joke, did you?"
"Well, one of us had to, and I lost the toss!" he chortled. "Hey… I gotta be honest Terone, I can't thank you enough. I haven't felt this energetic in years. This kind of reminds me of my old college days. Heh-heh… I'll activate the effect of Fortress Whale Battleship."
Crap, I had completely forgotten about that, these weird Fusions had effects that activated when they were destroyed.
"First of all, I have to banish a Ritual Monster from my Graveyard, so I'm going to banish the Zera the Mant card I sent there when I used Cost Down."
Zera the Mant? I thought. Zera the Freakin' Mant?
This had quickly passed any semblance of willing suspension of disbelief - something was very wrong. Zera the Mant was a card I had only read about in a magazine, the article claiming there were only three copies of it in circulation.
"I summon Archdemon Zera Lord of Lies!"
When you're a pro, you learn to expect anything and not much can unnerve you, but this did come close. The giant Fiend (obviously) looming above me right now was even bigger than Sengenjin. Its face, much like the vague description I had read about, looked like a hellish version of a crocodile's, covered with bony spurs and barbed horns, plus a maw of sharp teeth. Unlike the one I'd read about, however, it had armor, the type worn by those dark knights in fantasy movies who liked to display to everyone how evil they were. Blackened plate armor with sinister looking runes etched in red, skulls on the shoulders, knees, chest, and codpiece, and other malevolent ornaments. It wasn't wearing shoes, its three-toed feet having long, sharp talons, and the claws on its hands were longer and serrated. (3,000 ATK)
I couldn't do anything else, so I simply nodded, and he took his draw.
"Let's see here," he continued, "Zera has an effect here… Right, first I have to banish a Ritual Monster from my Graveyard -" He took the Performance of Sword Card and placed it in his jacket pocket - "and then, I can take the Fusion counterpart, or any Normal Monster, and equip it to Zera! Here we go."
What happened next was, to say the least, weird. Whirling Dervish Performance appeared on the much larger monster's shoulder, casually looking at me and Metal Dragoon with her good leg crossed over the prosthetic one, and a shit-eating smile on her face.
"Uhm, this grants… Zera Attack Points equal to half of her Attack Points." (4,000 ATK)
This was bad, but I figured I could still use Metal Dragoon's effect. I still had one counter on him left, meaning he should be able to withstand even this monster's attack.
For what seemed to be the hundredth time today, I was wrong. As Zera made a rush at Dragoon with its left claw, Dragoon tried to block with his shield, but the strike smashed it to pieces, and then a second slash with its right claw dealt the same fate to Dragoon himself.

"How the -"
"Metal Dragoon is a Warrior," explained Otto, "and so is Whirling Dervish Performance. When Zera is equipped with a monster, all monsters with the same Type as the monster it is equipped with lose their effects. And… that will be all for me."
I made a draw - it was Burst Breath. Not the most useful Trap against this thing.
"Attention passengers," said a voice over the intercom. "The District Line train will be arriving in seven minutes, the Circle Line in ten minutes. We apologize for any inconvenience."
Fate, it seems, had a sadistic sense of humor. Seven minutes… I was tempted to try to stall so I could end this duel prematurely, maybe tell him I was late for something - of course, I wasn't, and ending a duel early was something most pros tried to avoid. Even with an unofficial duel, you never knew when the archenemy of all pros was lurking somewhere nearby.
"Terone, if I may be blunt here -" It had been a while since Keeper of the Shrine had spoken, but it wasn't as unexpected this time. "We aren't in very good shape."
"No kidding," I replied, "but at least he doesn't have any Dragons he can use with that effect in his… Oh crap, yes he does." I looked at this odd card someone had planted in my deck. "Up to trying something new?"
"I'll try anything once," replied Keeper.
I nodded back, then took Divine Dragon Ragnarok, using its card to summon it to the field. (1,600 ATK)
And from there… It seemed like instinct took over.
"The beast I'm summoning is one of the most terrifying to ever walk the Earth one which the Ministry of Magic rates XXXXX. It's a known killer of wizards and believed impossible to domesticate or train… I'm going to challenge that notion right now. Keeper of the Shrine! Divine Dragon Ragnarok! Begone!"
The two monsters faded into columns of light, and it seemed the whole station went dark. The first thing to appear were the eyes… Eyes that were golden-yellow with vertical cat-like pupils.
"I summon Hungarian Horntail the Fierce Dragon!"
The rest of it emerged as if it were casting aside the darkness, a Dragon that was lizard-like in general shape with rough black scales, a mane of long, bronze spikes, and true to its name, a tail covered with similar spikes, like the head of a mace.
It bellowed a roar of pure, primal rage… (3,400 ATK)
"That's…" stuttered Otto. "That's really something, but…"
"But as strong as it is, your monster is stronger, right? Think again. During my own Battle Phase, when Horntail attacks a monster, that monster is considered to have its base Attack and Defense Scores. Any and all bonuses it gets from other cards are ignored.
"Attack Zera now! Infernal Soulfire!"
The Horntail was only too willing to oblige, breathing a concentrated stream of hot, violet flames at the huge demon. Zera let out an unholy howl as the superhot flames erupted around it, and it was consumed in a fiery pyre. Whirling Dervish Performance seemed to have her perch shot out from under her, falling on her behind with an annoyed grunt before shattering - can't deny I found that amusing.

"That was… Intense," started Otto, "but my monster has another effect. When destroyed by battle, it takes its foe with it! Wipe out the Hungarian Horntail! Memento Curse!"
The Horntail bellowed, and dark, ominous fog surrounded it, seemingly consuming it in dark magic. But… That actually made my job a lot easier.
"You want intense? I'm not done! Hungarian Horntail also has an effect that activates upon its own death. When that happens, I can summon a non-Effect Dragon from either Graveyard. I have Alexandrite Dragon, but -" Pointing at Otto's Disk, his Graveyard slot started glowing. "- right now, I'm in the mood for something more… ironic."
The monster that appeared now, summoned from Otto's Graveyard, was Seiyaryu. (2,500 ATK) I ordered the direct attack, and poor Otto seemed like he was going to soil his pants. Looking back, maybe I was a little too enthusiastic here - maybe.

As the holograms disappeared, I held my head, shivering. Still, as much a headache as it was, at least I was still on my feet.
"Are you okay, Otto?"
I was worried I might have hurt the poor guy, but he seemed to have just had the wind knocked out of him. I lent him a hand and helped him up.
"Ow, ugh," he muttered. "I just remembered, my old college days weren't all that pleasant… You do this for a living?"
"Heh, well… I guess maybe for some folks with boring jobs, trying out this sort of thing can make them appreciate it more, right?"
"Exactly. I, uh, oh, I think this is your train?"
I had a question or two - or twelve - to ask him, but the train finally was pulling into the station, and right now, I really wanted to get home.
"I have to wait for the Circle Line," said Otto. "Take care."
I nodded. I was still suspicious, but there was no point in badgering him any further.

"The kid has something of a cruel streak, doesn't he?"
"Yeah, yeah, they all do. He's a pro, you know. Trust me on this chief, he's the type who can take to this like a duck to water."
The man in the chair stood up, then nodded. "I hope so. Let's move on this ASAP before anyone else moves on it."
"No, problem. He may not know it, but by the end of the week, Terone Brickman will belong to us."

Once on the train - which was more crowded than usual, seeing as I was far from the only commuter who had been delayed - I tried my best to remain inconspicuous, finding a seat in the corner at the rear of the car.
Although this time, I wasn't afraid I'd be mugged, at least no more than I usually was. I was more worried that a team of lawyers representing J.K. Rowling's estate might appear to serve me with a summons. I didn't know much about the "eminent domain" laws, but I was pretty sure the characters in the Harry Potter books were still under copyright.
It was here where I was finally able to get a good look at that card. The illustration was a decent piece of work, almost like a reproduction of a painting. It had everything the standard Effect Monster Card had - red stars indicating the Level and an orb in the upper-right that displayed the Attribute.
But, there was one feature this card had that most didn't. In the lower left was "LV 2", and under that was "XP" next to a horizontal bar; about a third of it (on the left side) was green, the rest black.
An Experience Bar? Anyone who played video game RPGs knew how those worked, but how could a Monster Card gain experience points?
I decided to give Jenni a call, seeing as she was the one I usually asked when I had a question about a card. But, before I could hit the auto dial on my mobile, it rang. She was calling me.
Naturally, I answered. "Jenni? Listen, I need -"
"Terone, you are not going to believe -"
Seems one of us had interrupted the other, so I simply said, "You first."
"Phil just called."
I groaned. "What does he want?" This was the perfect ending to a bad day. To clarify, Phil Rosuto was an agent… Specifically, my agent. Still, while on the surface it wouldn't seem odd for an agent to call a client - annoying as he may be - it was rather odd for him to do so at 7 PM.
"No idea why," she answered, "he just said he wants to see you at his office at 9AM tomorrow morning. And yes, he said it was important."
At least I would get a chance to sleep off this headache before getting another one. "Jerri, listen," I said, "I need you to look up a few things."
After giving her the details of everything that happened, I told her to make sure we still had some Extra Strength Tylenol in the apartment. This hadn't been a good day, and tomorrow would probably be worse. Phil was probably going to scold me for using that card.
Worst of all, he was likely going to confiscate it.
I will confess, despite the worry about the legal consequences of using this card, despite the fact I may have been set up, and despite the stress headache I had gotten… It had been the best duel I'd had in years.
Whoever had made this card could not have created a better adaptation. Using it had been a rush that, most of my life, I had only dreamed of…
