140. Let's Get This Party Started
Somin and Junu
"Hello," Junu greeted the empty flat out of habit.
"We have plenty of time to be alone, Mia comes back usually much later," Somin explained.
Thinking about Mia, who always hung out with friends after school when Somin just went straight home.
"Great." The youngster visibly eased up. She poured him a glass of water and changed into an old disposable pink shirt and shorts.
I don't wanna ruin my pants and we'll be drawing a figure.
Somin felt the smooth fabric on her skin. She contemplated taking off Mia's bracelet but decided to leave it on.
Junu looked around the flat. Freedom. I want to live alone too.
The pain was prevalent in his chest, feeling such jealousy.
"Ehm, you should get changed too," Somin advised and he took off his clothes to stay only in his shirt and underwear. Feeling funny, but comfortable. All arms and legs, he stood there awkwardly.
"Let's start with the bleaching, we will have to wait around a lot," Somin said after reading the brochure and started mixing peroxide in a plastic bowl side-eyeing the lengthy manual nearby.
"Do you know how to do it?" Junu asked.
"Nah, I only read what they wrote in the manual, let's hope for the best." She looked at him being scared. "...and I watched youtube videos of others doing it. Plus I sort of know how they did in the hair salon." Somin was scared more.
But she hoped it'll turn out beautifully. Her own hair was already more yellowish blonde than pink as the beautifully saturated pink stayed only for a few weeks.
Junu gave her a thumbs up. "In you, I'll trust."
"You first sir." She made a gesture for him to sit.
Junu sat down on the miniature plastic stool in the bathroom, knees tightly put together, looking curiously at Somin and himself at the fairly long mirror hanging above the sink. She mixed the substance making faces from the awful unpalatable smell.
"Where should I put it?" Somin asked and Junu gazed into the mirror once more. Touching his hair and turning his head, the boy finally decided.
"Try to color only tips alongside my head," he showed with a gesture what he meant.
It'll be bolder than what I originally had in mind. But the young artist felt satisfaction from the bold decision.
Somin put the aluminum foil under the hair strands before putting the peroxide on. Working extra cautiously with fear to mess up his soft chestnut hair.
Thirty minutes later, Junu marveled at the silver sea between his dark locks.
I wonder how I'd feel when I'll have the color done.
In the meantime Somin got herself a full glass of white wine in desperate need to forget last night and switched places with him. The young boy eyed her drink and she winked at him.
"I'm starting light don't worry." But she already felt the urge to take the edge off, and what helps better than a glass of sweet summery wine?
"Now enjoy the easy part," she said.
"Shouldn't there be some order?" he asked warily, imagining her hair falling off, strands staying in his hands, fried.
"Hmm," she mused, "start with the roots around my forehead and then slowly work up your way to the back of my head. If you're left with more paste in the end, put it everywhere," she explained, faintly remembering how the guy at the salon did it the first time.
"I don't want to see pink anymore." She sipped the wine, satisfied with the upcoming change. Then, she remembered Teho's new nails.
Yeah, nothing pink. Not his gorgeous soft hands.
Junu's presence was comforting. As he covered her hair in the smelly substance, the touch of the brush on her hair made her relax more. She cherished the familiarity of brushing locks as she did it often with her own brother.
Somin put a plastic cap on, to seal it when the young artist proclaimed it finished. They both laughed, looking bizarre together, almost butt-naked.
