Whynot (Cartoon Characters reading Homestuck)
Act 1
Part 1
[OS-1]
A young man stands in his shared bedroom, weeks away, it will be his birthday, almost thirteen years ago he was given life, he will be acknowledged in this story
Does this story know his name?
A rhetorical question.
His name is DIPPER PINES
His name is DIPPER, though his real name is MASON, he prefers to stick with his nickname, previously used to mock his birthmark on his forehead, shaped like the big dipper. He is in his room, one shared by his sister. He has a knack for mystery and the supernatural, as he had experienced some in the home he stayed in for the summer, the Mystery Shack.
What will he do?
Well, he wouldn't do anything as earlier today, he received a strange parcel with Dipper's name and the shack's address. He found it a little weird that he received this package, as he didn't remember ordering something online or expected something from his parents.
He examines the package to try and find something strange from the box, fearing that if he opens it, anything can happen.
But sometimes, you have to say 'screw it.
Dipper opens the package.
Inside the package were two items, a letter and a disk
[OS-2]
Dipper reads the letter.
Dear Dipper Pines,
If you are reading this, you are going to participate in a very interesting experience.
This disk contains two contents, a video game and a fixed website.
After opening the package, In the next 10 minutes, you have to insert the disk into your computer and begin reading the story that is contained within the website. It's highly recommended that the story is vital to your game and you should read it as much as you can and memories everything that's shown
Failure to insert disk will cause both disk and this letter to disappear, sending into another version of you, this will continue until the disk is inserted.
If you insert this disk, I hope you enjoy the game, the story and all of its experience.
- From a friend who wants to experiment
[OS-3]
Dipper looks at the disk, which had a strange symbol with no words. He was a little hesitant at first, especially with the parts of 'another version of you' meaning that this disk is surely supernatural. Why did it send for him, how many times has this package been sent across the multiverse?
This would be a good time to ask his great uncle about this since he's a great scientist who studied the mystery of Gravity Falls before being lost in the multiverse for 30 years before Stan brought him back much later.
But to his judgement, Dipper decided to play along.
[OS-4]
Dipper goes over to his laptop.
It was a cheap laptop that runs previous-gen software. it was really cheap and only used to watch videos and look at community forums.
As well as other things, but he doesn't want to talk about, it's too personal!
Regardless, Dipper turns on the computer and enters the disk into the disk drive. Upon closing the drive, two things pop up on the screen.
The first was the game itself called 'SBURB', which is being installed… slowly.
In the meantime, Dipper looked at the second pop-up. Which happens to be the story that the letter mentioned.
But before he can look at the story, the webpage asks for a username.
Dipper thought a lot about his name. unsure about it or just decided to put his real name down. But decided to go along with it and make something up based on what he's like and his interest.
PineDecipher
After entering his username, the story appears on-screen.
The title 'HOMESTUCK'
Dipper wasn't sure what he's getting himself into, but he was intrigued by the starting story, which features a gif of a boy.
He starts reading the story
[1]
Dipper:
"Okay… so it takes place three years ago," Dipper thought, a little unsure about the character and find it a little weird that during thirteen years, it's only when he became a teenager, he's going to have his own name.
He tried to type a name for this boy, thinking of the name 'Tyrome', it was a sweet and amazing name. the name he gave his clone when he used the paper machine.
But to surprise, nothing happened, as it turns out he wasn't supposed to enter a name, but click on the button that says 'Enter Name.'
[2]
Dipper:
Dipper facepalms from looking at the name.
"Really?" he complained, "that kind of name is only an amateur would write, or maybe Mabel."
From this page alone, Dipper can tell what kind of story it's going to be, a little glad that the boy declines the name.
[3]
Dipper:
"Okay, so his name is John," Dipper said.
[4]
Dipper:
"So he likes paranormal lore and computer programing." Dipper said, finding John's interests interesting, "though I wouldn't want to think why someone would like terrible movies, but unfortunately, that's all Gravity Falls can broadcast."
He then looked at the highlighted text, which reads 'quickly receive arms from drawer'. Which made him curious about what John was, since he doesn't seem to have any arms.
[5]
Dipper:
"If they're in the chest, why go for the drawer?" the boy questions this quick page.
[6]
Dipper:
This page was a little strange for Dipper, as the gif shows a mouse button clicking and dragging the cake onto the bed, as though another user is controlling the screen.
He reads the page and it said that the 'user' was sympathetic to the boy's lack of arms that they moved the cake for him, all so he can get his arms.
Though this only brings more questions to Dipper's mind. If John has no arms, how is he going to open the magic chest to receive these arms?
He clicks on the next page to see how it goes.
[7]
Dipper:
"Okay, so he does have arms." Dipper said, looking at the image of John holding fake arms with now his arms. "guess it's the art style of this story, or to make sure that the artist doesn't draw much."
[8]
Dipper:
"Really show his prankster and magician side," Dipper said, reading the number of items he has, reminding himself of Mabel since she would be interested in such tricks and Grunkle Stan since he uses smoke pallets. He on the other hand don't by performing magic, especially after what he sees in both the Mystery Shack and the Tent of Telepathy.
[9]
Dipper:
"So in this story, he has some form of inventory space." Dipper smiled, noticing that John has the ability to 'Captchalouge', which he guesses means putting items in an inventory box so it seems he's carrying more stuff without lifting them.
It would be fun to have some sort of inventory for himself.
[OS-5]
With the thought in his mind, Dipper turns to see a closed can of PITT COLA, and for fun, he imagines trying to Captchalouge the beverage.
He put his hand out and pushed it towards the drink, thinking that when aiming it at the drink, it would disappear.
When he did so, it actually disappears.
This surprised Dipper, "what was that?" he questions, but suddenly have a sense of knowing that he has PITT COLA in his Sylladex, with 3 empty cards left.
He doesn't know what it means and found it a little strange. But to calm the thought, he would assume it would be something that's 'part of Gravity Falls' and continue reading Homestuck.
Not before looking at the status of the game installation, which is at 23%.
[10]
Dipper:
"So he has to use the latest item he recently Captchalouge before he can use another." Dipper thought, finding the method a little questionable and a bit difficult for starters.
And thinking about what he did, and if he indeed has the power to Captchalouge like John, he has to remind himself that if he did it again with another item, it would mean he can't pull out his cola.
[11]
Dipper:
"Hey, I can't judge for what he likes," Dipper said, no comment on this page.
Though it includes blue text, he was curious about where it goes.
He clicks on it and it opens an error, a page that doesn't exist.
"That's strange," Dipper said before going back to the page.
[12]
Dipper:
"Wishing him a happy birthday without saying it in person." Dipper said, "yeah I know how that feels." He reminded himself of his relationship with his parents, who, while care for him, doesn't do much for him for his sister. Why else would they send them to live with their Grand uncle for the summer?
[13]
Dipper:
"At least he doesn't get his poster ruined." Dipper thought, though curious for what the poster looks like.
He saw the next page highlight and he… questions what John is going to do.
[14]
Dipper:
"You're going to nail posters on the wall?" Dipper questions John's idea. "wouldn't that damage the poster?"
He turns around to look at his sister's side of the room, realizing what he's saying "then again, Mabel does it too."
After reading the words on the page and looking at the image, this made Dipper curious, wondering what would happen if John picks up the nails when his inventory is full. He considers that he wouldn't be able to put it in. he clicks on the highlighted text to see what happens.
[15]
Dipper:
Looking at the image, it gave something a little unexpected but reasonable. With the fake arms being flung out of the deck when nails were equipped.
"Okay," Dipper rubbed his chin, "so if I had what he had, I have to be careful about what I'm equipping, if I had more than five items, then that means the Pitt Cola would be pushed out of the deck, perhaps spilling it or worse
After the thought, he looked at the next highlighted text and he… didn't like its indication.
[16]
Dipper:
"At least he's not going to do it," Dipper said, a little glad that John sees it as a stupid idea.
Then the text reads that the desk is polished and 'it beckcons'.
This only caused the boy to sigh at the fact that John had thoughts on it.
[17]
Dipper:
"So, two separate items can fit in the same card at a time," Dipper said, finding it interesting towards how I work. "I guess it might depend on the size, I can't see putting a thousand cans of Pitt cola in a singular card."
[18]
Dipper:
"Guess it make sense since the two cards are together in order," Dipper said to the short page.
[19]
Dipper:
Dipper was yet again impressed by how John can use the hammer and nails to put the poster on the blank space wall, not even to do hard work. Showing this being more of a computer game than real life.
And looking at the poster, he was a little unsure of what it shows, as it seems to be another horror comedy film that seems ridiculous.
[20]
Dipper:
"is that supposed to be a reference from that film?" Dipper said, not understanding the text on this page, since he never saw the film that John seems to like.
And based on what it looks like, it seems to be a terrible movie.
[21]
Dipper:
"I guess since this takes place in 2009 when Obama being president was recent, it would surprise him." Dipper thought with another comment on another movie he hasn't seen but curious since it stars Morgan Freeman. Though it seems to be too scary for Mabel and he might be a little shook from the film since it seems to be about impending apocalypses.
[22]
Dipper:
"SBURB?" Dipper was surprised by the word, "as in the game."
From this, it gave a clear explanation about the video game as it seems that in this story, the game exists and probably known, especially if John is waiting for the game.
"Now I'm a little curious about the game…" Dipper thought, feeling a little excited once it's installed on his computer.
[23]
Dipper:
"Sounds like he's not a fan of cakes." Dipper said, "probably explain why there are two pieces of cakes in his room."
[24]
Dipper:
"At least you're learning" Dipper comments on how John is trying to program but isn't good at it.
[25]
Dipper:
Just when he looked at the short page to show the 'Peasterchum' software. the new software was loaded onto his tabs. In curiosity, he clicked on it.
Upon clicking, it opens a new popup, with the same title as the one in the story, called 'Peasterchum'. And like the page, it has a list of 'chumrolls' and options to set his mood.
So far, there's only four, each of them being colour coded.
'-PinesDecipher (blue)
-GrandAdventureGirl (purple)
-[Awaiting user] (red)
-[Awaiting user] (green)'
From this information, it shows the number of users that's going to also be part of this 'experience'. And based on the list, it seems that another person has already joined in.
[OS-6]
Wanting to know about what's going on. He decided to Pester GrandAdventureGirl.
- PinesDecipher [PD] began pestering GrandAdventureGirl [GA] -
PD: Hello?
GA: Hi
GA: do you know what's going on?
PD: I'm just confused as you.
GA: :
PD: I thought you might have some answers, but I guess I am wrong.
PD: What happened btw, did you gotten a post in the box?
GA: Yeah,
PD: Was it addressed to you?
GA: Uh huh.
PD: And I guess your name is Dipper Pines
GA: Who's Dipper Pines?
PD: Okay, knocking parallel duplicates out of the way. So you are someone else
PD: I'm Dipper Pines btw, sorry if I didn't introduce myself earlier
GA: That's fine :)
GA: I thought I was talking to another self too, would be strange and amazing
GA: The name's Webby, Webby Vanderquack
PD: Nice to meet you Webby
PD: Getting back on track, I assume you gotten a package that has a disk and a letter, telling you to insert the disk onto your computer.
GA: That's the gist of it.
PD: And while your computer is installing, you start reading the Homestuck story
GA: Just started reading.
GA: Though, weirdly, it starts with a webpage where someone is pestering another person
GA: Don't even know anything about them.
PD: Wait, so you don't know who John is?
GA: Who's John?
PD: Alright I think I have an idea of what's going on
PD: I already started reading this story and it seems that four people are reading this story at the same time, so while I started reading on page one, you start reading on page 25
GA: That sounds dumb.
PD: Of course, it is, and I don't know why it works that way.
GA: so what happened?
PD: nothing really, just that John is a regular boy during his birthday looking around his room and setting up a poster, he was also waiting for a package of a game beta before a message opens up in Pesterchum.
PD: What you're looking at is him going onto his computer.
GA: Okay, caught up now
PD: This is very strange, and I want to read further. Hopefully, it would be a mystery to be solved.
GA: Or an adventure!
GA: Let's set on this quest Dipper, to understand what's going on!
PD: Okay… then let's resume reading, we'll talk when our games have been installed
GA: See you then
- PinesDecipher [PD] stop pestering GrandAdventureGirl [GA] -
Dipper doesn't know who this new girl is, but she sounds very cheerful, it reminds him of his twin sister in a way…
[26]
Dipper:
Dipper reads the conversation, as John seemed to talk to someone named 'turntechGodhead'. From the dialogue and the cussing, he can already tell that this person was a jerk.
More so when they discuss about someone in a movie drinking pee when they think it was apple juice.
This only weirded out Dipper, now not wanting to see the movie they're talking about, though after reading further, he notices that they talked about turntech having two copies of the game as well as talking about something called 'game bro', wondering what it was.
Webby:
"Ew, gross," Webby said, after reading the few lines in the conversation, she quickly hides the logs and click onto the next page.
[27]
Dipper:
"Explainable since he's a kid," Dipper said when John looked out at the window and saw a tire swing, "wish to ride on one…"
Webby:
Though Webby has started reading Homestuck, she never seen the previous pages, from the images shown, she can't see what John looks like, though notice that he was a regular kid with a tire swing outside. "wish to ride on one…" she thought.
[28]
Dipper:
"It's called a flag." Dipper facepalms when John doesn't know what a red mail flag was on a mailbox.
Webby:
Webby looked at an image of the full face of John, and it confuses her.
He doesn't seem to be a duck or any kind of person. There are no features that stand them out, and she can't tell what he was but thought that since he is a webcomic using not much artistic style, there wouldn't be enough time to draw many character heads.
With that out of the way, Webby read about the little red arm-swingy-dealy thing, and to wonder what they're called.
[29]
Dipper:
From this image and the text, Dipper was a little unsure what to make of this, especially when John said that his dad beat to the mail.
it just tells that their relationship is somewhat not regular.
Webby:
"What's so wrong about his dad?" Webby said in curiosity, a little confused about the text telling them to check the mail later.
[30]
Dipper:
"So he's the dad that talks a lot to his son," Dipper makes a note of this.
He also notices the wording while reading it more, now understanding why the story is called 'Homestuck' because it's a boy being stuck in his room at his home.
Webby:
"Wonder what they talk about?" Webby said, now a little curious about the relationship of John and his father.
She also feels a little better than John decided not to talk to turntechGodhead, she had enough talking about weird bodily fluid subjects.
[31]
Dipper:
Dipper uses his mousepad to look at the images that are supposed to be his games on his CD rack, showing different kinds of weird games, even an MMORPG of Ghostbusters 2, as though a game like that could ever exist.
There were three highlighted squares, he tried to click on them, but they come as errors like last time.
Webby:
Webby use her mouse to look at the images, noticing the pictures of John's CDs, the images show robots and animals, but also those weird creatures that she has never seen before, such as one who wore a gentlemen suit and hat, named 'Harry Anderson.'
"They look funny looking." She spoke. "I wonder if Scrooge encounters these creatures before. I'll ask him later."
[32]
Dipper:
"That is indeed a very large book." Dipper scratches his chin, "though I think Mabel would like that book. If it wasn't too large for her"
Webby:
"Seems this colonel has a lot of jokes and magic," Webby said, who always been curious about magic, though Scrooge wouldn't have any magic in his manor.
She looks down at her friendship bracelet, remembering her friend losing her to Magica.
Unknown to her, her lost friend, Lena, was watching Webby, additionally reading the story that Webby was reading, she finds it lame but intriguing. Plus she's stuck with Webby while she has the bracelet.
Sure being stuck in the shadow realm sucks, but at least she's still living… in some way…
[33]
Dipper:
"How in the world did you accidentally captchalogue fake arms when you know how your inventory method works?" Dipper questions the logic of the page
Webby:
"what's do bad about putting fake arms in your… whatever it is?" Webby asked, curious about the captchalogue, as it seems to be an inventory system.
[34]
Dipper:
"What is it now?" Dipper said, a little unsure about turntech.
Webby:
"Oh no," Webby said, a little worried about turntech.
[35]
Dipper:
From the dialogue on the pasterchum, Dipper was a little curious about how this story works when it has something such as sylladexes and inventory. Knowing that he might have such power as well, but now more curious on the fact that there are different methods or 'modus' as it's called.
He's a little unsure about turntech's modus or how it works.
Webby:
"Okay, so it is like inventory in an adventure game," Webby said, remembering when one of the boys showed her the fun of adventure games, it wasn't as fun as more active games at the arcades, but at least she understands the gamer slang that she wouldn't have play those games.
Plus, it would be fun if she can have her own inventory.
[36]
Dipper:
Dipper snickers, "it does look like the deer has antlers."
Webby:
Webby snickers, "arms in cake, like a zombie popping out from the bed like a surprise birthday celebration!"
[37]
Dipper:
"A strife specibus?" Dipper was confused, "now this is something new."
He reads the back of the specibus, seeing a list of 'kinds' that seems that each of them is weapons, John selecting the hammer.
If he could tell, it seems that the inventory has a unique combat inventory. As though there are moments where John has to fight. But why?
Webby:
Still wondering how the inventory works, Webby smiled at the strife specibus, showing different weapon kinds and how it can be used for combat purposes.
"that sure would come in handy when I want to fight monsters," Webby said.
[38]
Dipper:
"So there is a difference between a captchalogue and a strife," Dipper said, wondering about the name Strife and why such a name.
Webby:
"John equips hammer!" Webby said, "now you can do some nail work for construction!"
[39]
Dipper:
"So that means you can only equip kinds once?" Dipper asked from the pesterlog between John and turntech. Now curious how he's going to use the strife system if he indeed has it.
Webby:
"A little weird, but I guess it's like a fantasy class." Webby commented, "meaning John will be the master wielder of hammers."
[40]
Dipper:
"Exactly!" Dipper said, "you can carry so many things with this captchalogue system. Hard enough to bring the journals with me everywhere I got, having it in my captchalogue will be more than convenient."
Dipper considers the idea of captchalouging one of the three journals later, with Ford' permission of course.
Webby:
"It's always good to bring a book." Webby said, "like a certain woodchuck scout…"
[41]
Dipper:
"So Game Bro is a magazine," Dipper said, curious about the cover and about the new game. Which made him a little more interested in the game.
Webby:
"looks like something one of the boys would read," Webby said, a little more interested in the game, wondering if she can get the triplets into this game, she might have to ask once she gets to play.
[42]
Dipper:
Dipper reads the magazine and was a little disappointed. As the magazine talks about a review, but there are so many problems
Dipper sighs, "this article looks like it was written by a child." He complains, "this is really informative about the game, bet he didn't even play the damn thing."
Webby:
"Poor Dennis." Webby said, feeling a little sad on the article where Dennis broke his thumb from a fall. "at least this reviewer is giving him a shout out, a little rude, but nice."
With the cursing presented, she considers continuing to read this story, as she doesn't like bad words.
But an adventurer must prevail any challenge!
[43]
Dipper:
"Agreed," Dipper said, who doesn't see the point of Game Bro
Webby:
"Good to find kindling for the fire," Webby said.
[44]
Dipper:
"Really don't see the point in that," Dipper questions John choice of wasting a card for a hat.
Webby:
"Another thing just in case the magazine doesn't lit ablaze," Webby commented.
"He's not going to burn it Webby," Lena sighs while facepalming. Even though it's pointless for her to comment since Webby can't see or hear her.
[45]
Dipper:
"A clever disguise?" Dipper raises a brow, "then again, Mabel and I used fake IDs to get into a bar and that somehow worked."
Webby:
"So you can put two things into the same card, very useful." Webby comments on the captchalogue technique. "meaning you can put so many things under one card."
[46]
Dipper:
"Guess it make sense," Dipper comments on the part where wearing items would free up space, "Would be more difficult if wearing and equipping clothes would still fill up space, hate that in games."
Though with the disguised, he wasn't impressed.
Webby:
Webby laughed at the silly disguise. "you look so silly!" she continues to laugh.
[47]
Dipper:
"Look more like jesters," Dipper said, looking at the comment on how Dad has a painting of a harlequin and would correct John if he calls them clowns.
From this, Dipper was now curious about what John's father was like, the paintings don't help but picture him as someone who likes weird colourful things that can be found at a circus.
Webby:
"Huh, so they do look like harlequins," Webby said, as the picture reminded her of one of the beagle boys that looked like scary clowns.
As for the other picture, it showed more of the strange creatures, this time wearing a weird disguise that john is wearing. She makes a mental note about them and looks up for both the names that john mention to what the creature looks like.
[48]
Dipper:
Dipper was a little surprised by the images.
"That's a lot of harlequin paintings," Dipper said, now wondering about John's fathers somewhat strange interest in such a creature
Webby:
Webby was a little surprised form the images.
"looks like Scrooge isn't the only one with strange artifacts," Webby said, now curious about the certain items that hopefully John would examine as the following link text shows.
[49]
Dipper:
"Not much like Stan's strange exhibits for his tourist trap," Dipper said, remembering how his Grunkle used the Mystery Shack to fool customers to look at useless and fake junk and get ripped off for it.
But that's his living.
Webby:
"Hey, everyone has their interest," Webby said, "plus it shows the character of the person, like how Scrooge has a lot of very interesting stuff during his adventures." She recalls the different items, remembering how he got them and put them all in his home, which she can look at.
Scrooge for Webby is the most interesting duck she ever knows.
[50]
Dipper:
"Yeah, but you don't want the fireplace to keep having a fire, otherwise it would risk burning the whole place down," Dipper said when the page shows John examing fire.
Though wanting to click on the next page.
But decided to check on his new pesterchum.
Webby:
"Now I need to look up Mark Twain," Webby added another note of 'people to look up,' though more likely that they don't exist. But that wouldn't stop the girl.
She clicked on the next page, but it didn't turn over to the next page.
She looked at the webpage and notice four dots, two of them are grey, and the other two are in three colours, the first dot is in blue and the other is in purple and yellow.
And not just that, but Dipper is Pestering her. She clicks over at the other software to check out what he has to say.

- PinesDecipher [PD] began pestering GrandAdventureGirl [GA] –
PD: So what do you think?
GA: It's great so far
GA: Though I would go without the cursing
PD: Understandable
PD: I don't mind them, I'm about to be 13 soon.
GA: Wait really?!
PD: Yeah, at the end of the summer
GA: Well happy birthday in advance :)
PD: A little too early, but I'll take it
GA: Also I notice one thing
PD: What is it?
GA: Well, it's when I click to the next page
GA: There are four dots, judging on our colours, I would presume that the page is recording our status on our story, meaning you are blue and I am purple
GA: When I clicked on it, the dot went yellow with a purple outline,
GA: When I click again, nothing happens
PD: Sounds like a 'ready up' system
PD: Maybe when I click the highlighted text, we will see the next page.
GA: I guess we are reading this at the same reading pace
GA: Weird…
PD: Anyway, what's your percentage on your game?
GA: 53
PD: Mines 40
GA: Guess we have to keep reading
GA: Hopefully once it's uploaded, we can finally see what this game is about
PD: You can say that we would be going on an adventure ;)
GA: HA! See what you did there!
PD: Alright, then waste no time, let's resume.

[End of Act 1: Part 1]
