The One Who Came Back

Chapter 18: Journey to Baharuth

"No, no, no, no!", breathed the bandit while running through the alleys - "I can't be caught, I need to escape!".

Dodging beggars, old boxes and garbage bags, the bandit ran desperately, "how did this happen?" was his thought. Everything was going well until weeks ago when the rumors started. People disappearing, loan sharks and gigolos beaten up, everything was going from bad to worse until tonight, when the thing went downhill for good.

Now he was being chased by who knows what, but then a hope dawned: a patrol, imperial guards at the end of the alley, maybe they would save him.

"HELP! I NEED HEL-...", the thug tried to shout before being snatched back into the darkness of the alley.

"Did you hear that?" said one of the guards.

"No, and neither did you hear anything."

"B-But someone might be in need of help, haven't you heard the rumours?"

"If you're referring to an adventurer hunting scum that sell black powder around town, beating up bandits and thieves, no, I didn't hear anything, and even if I had, it would all be nonsense to distract us. Now pay attention to the patrol, other people need us more than these guys do."

"Yes sir...", said the younger soldier resigning himself.

As soon as they started walking again, the older soldier looked over his shoulder and up in time to see a slender figure jumping with something to drag between the buildings, he just smiled slightly and thought before continuing his round, " Happy hunting, buddy."

42 days before:

Arwintar, capital of the Baharuth Empire. "City of Gold", "Precious Stone of Civilization". Compared to the capitals of other kingdoms, Arwintar was much more modern and progressive in its architecture and culture. Kami Miyako was old, "old" many would say. Despite having the greatest military power with its Scriptures, its army of fanatics and dominating most of the trades, it has long ceased to be a reference, becoming a sad and gloomy city. Re-Estize was a rival only on border issues, its capital was slick at best. The Holy Kingdom could rival when it was at its peak, but today, after a demonic invasion and civil war, its beauty has been taken and what's left has become dull. Even the capital of the Sorcerous Kingdom, E-Rantel, despite already far surpassing the Empire with its organizational capacity and exponential growth, was still decades away from being as big as Arwintar.

So, the jewel of the Empire, bulwark of civilization, the one that took the breath of visitors and inspired bards to their songs, generated but one thought in Entoma.

"Meh!" said the battle maid as she descended from her carriage.

Meh: A word used by the Ultimates that doesn't exist in the New World. Its origin is unknown to Entoma, but from her experience, it seems to be used when someone tries to impress but fails in that regard. Therefore, she thought it good form to use it when she first glimpsed the capital of the vassal empire.

Entoma had received orders from her master to discreetly seek out the traveler and assess racial integration in the empire, so the best way to do it, according to her sisters, would be as a tourist.

"How do you hide that you're looking for something specific without attracting attention? Simple, let everyone know that you want to know everything, attracting maximum attention!", suggested Solution, the most prepared employee for spying "But that will only work because if it's about you being who Entoma is."

"I'm not sure I understand what you mean."

"You see, Entoma, you are my dearest sister, and I LOVE YOU, but you are not the most discreet of us. Despite your usual disguise, you would still draw attention wherever you go, even though it is common among adventurers to use masks, a closer look would reveal your non-human nature, so why try to hide it?"

"But you will also sneak in covertly... why not use the same one?"

"Because I can pass for human, probe discreetly and not draw attention! Besides, I'm an exceptional liar."

Entoma seemed to languish after that statement.

"And that's why it will work for you Entoma! The fact that you are there for something that is already expected of the Sorcerous Kingdom will serve as a cloak to hide the true nature of your mission, just follow the flow of tourists and expose yourself as much as possible. while your support team comb the Capital with a fine-tooth comb."

This seemed to lift the maid's spirits.

Entoma reached Arwintar in the most usual way possible, taking a portal to the border, then going through the check at the new customs and entering another portal a few kilometers from the Capital.

She used the most inconspicuous chariot the Great Tomb had, and yet it was of higher quality than those the nobles owned: white with gold trim, no emblem of the Sorcerous Realm, drawn by a majestic white Sleipnir and driven by a charioteer. smiling man who wore rich groom's robes.

As they entered the Capital, Entoma could notice the number of different races circulating through the streets, despite the absolute majority of passersby being human, there was its share of heteromorphs, but apparently all still humanoid and in much smaller quantity than in E-Rantel.

Of those races, the largest number were elves, then dwarves, lizardmen, rabbitmen, a few minotaurs, and even apemen she hadn't seen before. They all seemed to be adventurers to some degree, coming in search of opportunities for work or perhaps trade, that would be one of the things to be investigated in the weeks to come.

Arriving at the Big Golden Apple Hotel, the coachman opened the carriage door so that Entoma could alight, carrying minimal luggage. The coachman followed behind the maid as she headed for the hotel reception, which although it was one of the most important in the Capital, was not as busy as expected.

"Hello, I'd like a room, please."

"Miss, would you like to make a reservation for your master on what date?"

"No, no. The booking would be for me with immediate entry if possible."

"Oh! I'm sorry for the misunderstanding miss, we have some rooms available, but I'm sorry to say they are on the upper floors."

Despite the modernity in architecture, the Empire still had basically archaic technology, so elevators were out of the question, so the higher the building, the less sought after were the rooms, after all, no one would like to go up several floors to be able to rest.

"Ah! Don't worry sir, if possible I would like the Coverage."

"Coverage? I'm sorry, but I'm not familiar with the term."

"Room on the top floor."

"Ah! I understand, unfortunately the top floor is the hotel owner's residence, but I guarantee that the suite below should be to your liking, the view is wonderful."

"Good, I'm excited to see your city."

"Well, we at the Big Golden Apple Royal Hotel are proud of our location, we are just a few blocks from Central Commerce and a few kilometers from the Grand Arena. If you wish, you can still easily reach the Museum of Imperial Art, nowadays tours are organized for visitors."

A UNFF! was then heard by all. Next to Entoma was a rich older lady with huge jewels and a look of disdain.

"Excuse me ma'am, is something bothering you?" asked the receptionist.

"Don't worry, I was just remembering how far the Empire has fallen", replied the lady with a small glance towards Entoma.

"I don't quite understand what you mean by that."

"Why, ever since the Emperor became a vassal, we've seen more people like that roaming around here."

"Which type are you referring to?", said Entoma with a more aggressive tone.

"No need to fret young lady, I know you must be important where you come from, but we are the Empire, we are the benchmark for others, but that benchmark seems to be, how shall I put it, diminishing with the ascendancy of so many "lesser visitors" "from abroad."

"So you think I shouldn't be here."

"Many shouldn't be here!" stated the Night Manager upon arriving at reception.

"I overheard the conversation and I completely agree with you. Please, Gunther, call security," said the manager, addressing the Day Manager, who soon returned with two formally dressed thugs. It was as if they had stuffed cupboards inside butler suits.

"Please escort this person out of my hotel", ordered the manager pointing to the rich lady.

"WHAT!? HOW DARE YOU!?"

"I, as a manager AND owner, am resigned to choosing who can enjoy my hotel."

"But you said you agreed with me!"

"Yes, I agree with you, I agree that certain types of people shouldn't be here, the intolerant type are the ones I absolutely abhor."

"THIS IS AN OUTRAGE, I WILL NEVER SETTLE FOOT HERE AGAIN!", the lady raged as she was escorted out of the hotel.

"I'd really appreciate it if you'd do that," said the manager.

"I'm very sorry about that, miss. It seems that some people are too attached to the past to see change coming."

"Actually, I thank you for the help and education shown, it seems your hotel is adapting to the new times."

"Yes, as you say: adapt or perish! With vassalage, the Empire opened up even more to new peoples, so soon we will live with many different races."

"Being an exclusive hotel for humans is not a good commercial option for the new era, but we still have our share of people who do not understand this fact.

That is why the movement has decreased, but the resumption seems to be promising and soon."

""Different races"... then you realized I'm not human!", said Entoma in a surprised voice.

"Ah! Yes, I soon realized, I can tell that you are not human. It takes a lot of observation to be a hotel manager, but it would be very rude and impolite of me to ask what race you belong to without dinner first. That lady probably didn't notice, I believe her disdain is because she imagined you to be some kind of holiday servant."

"Why would you say that?"

"Your clothes, despite being extremely rich, still resemble those of, sorry to say, maids, as seen on caravans coming from the South."

"Ah, but of course! Even though I haven't come that far from the South, it seems my clothes don't seem to suit my... vacation. This kind of incident could become routine, apparently."

"Don't worry miss, there aren't so many people with those kinds of thoughts lately. But if you fancy a change of look, I'm sure you'll have immense fun in the Central Commerce stores! The fall collection is particularly stunning this year."

"Guess this will be one of my first stops then."

"Certainly! Now, could you sign our registration book? Do you have any special needs for your accommodation, different or specific food?"

"No, no, human accommodations are more than satisfactory to me. And as for food, I think I'll taste the local cuisine," said Entoma, thinking of the rich lady.

"Wonderful! Welcome to the Big Golden Apple Royal Hotel, Miss Entoma Vasilissa Zeta," said the manager as he read the name written in beautiful cursive.

When they reached the room, after several floors and countless steps, Entoma threw herself on the bed, even though she wasn't tired, and spoke to the coachman who accompanied her with her suitcase.

"Looks like the reception was better than expected, huh?!"

The coachman approached the bed, threw his top hat, deftly hitting the coat rack in the corner, and then began to unbutton his jacket and waistcoat. Then he took off his shirt, with agile movements he showed off his toned bare chest, his muscles were well worked and his face was maintained with that big smile.

Then a thin pink line appeared at the base of the coachman's neck, down to his navel. Using his fingers, he began to open his own chest until it was possible to see something coming out of there and throwing himself upright on the bed.

"Really my dear, it was much more interesting, wasn't it?", replied Kyouhukou while putting on his little crown.
