A/N: This contains spoilers for the early parts of Death Note, including Raye Penber. This fic also assumes you've read the manga or have seen the anime. This fic follows the manga's events, not the anime; but you can still read if you've only seen the anime, the events will just seem weirdly placed in terms of dates. This prologue will be written way differently from the rest of the fic. Due to me being very new to writing this kind of thing, some characters may seem out of character.

PROLOGUE
Date… doesn't really need to be written.
Journal entry… doesn't matter. What will be described in this journal doesn't begin to describe the amount of interest poured into capturing Kira at the point in time this was written. Kira was, or perhaps even is the most elusive being in existence. It's a bit of a low bar, considering who he turned out to be, but… I digress. And I'm already getting bored of writing this way. How about that?
Before I set the scene for whoever happens to find this and fill in the blanks that are so-desperately needed for his eventual descent to hell, here's a warning. This isn't a typical tale or mystery novel with suspense. This isn't some lost journal that has been found. This isn't just an account. This, my dear reader, is an archive. An archive of events that have led up to Kira's death. …As a concept, really. A serial killer that kills all evil, no matter what evil it is, was bound to eventually have been disavowed.
Who is this oh-so mysterious writer? What kind of being would be so interested in someone from the outside world that would normally mean nothing to them? Well, it just so happens that this Kira figure was responsible for nearly shaking Gensokyo's society up, which both infuriates and intrigues me. Such a pain to deal with so, as well. If someone manages to find this, much less my acquaintance, L, then you have the pleasure of reading through.
To set the scene of our tale, I suppose I could gather some sort of explanation for how it all happened. While it may not be completely accurate, it's more of a thought on what led up to this ordeal. A plucky human by the name of Light Yagami had found the Notebook of Death. After its first use at his hands, he had decided that the world had needed cleansing, so to speak. Little would he know, that of course things wouldn't pan out that way, not ideally. I don't subscribe to the belief of "all that is evil needs to perish for the world to be better." Thinking that all evil supposedly disappears… What are humans left to do?
Other than rot, never finding their desire, and going extinct, nothing. WIthout a purpose of chasing evil, or their desire, many wouldn't even think of doing anything but becoming evil. The cycle then repeats itself for as long as time allows. Getting back on topic, Yagami was currently sitting in his chair. In his white button-up, with a red tie, and a neutral expression, he was bored. Bored out of his mind. Not bored, really, but focused despite the futile task. Why?
He had done what he wanted to do. But it took so much work. The detective known as L was on his backfoot, and he needed to figure out the potential of the notebook before being caught by L; that was, if he had any intention of getting away.
It was approximately January 19 when he took a look at the names he had in his possession, those being: Hakuro Iori; suspected serial killer whose victims were always found in the forest, Kiichiro Osoreda; A drug addict as most would call him, and the list of every agent that had been sent to Japan. There had been a few others, but those aren't that important to this recounting of events. But… eh, why not?
As a test to see how far it might go, he wrote that a purse-robber would go to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, whatever that may be, and proclaim that he could climb it. Next…
Hakuro Iori
Heart Attack
At the edge of a forest, Hakuro chases down a victim into the depths of a forest. After mouthing off about Kira, he's about to land the killing blow. He dies of a heart attack just before he lands the stab.
He was hoping to see if he could control the details of a victim's death, and even set up circumstances. If this worked, he assumed that circumstances would have to line up in place, but victims' actions would line up with what was written in the notebook. The very next day, he sees missing posters of both the victim and another stranger pop up. He had thought it worked, though he hadn't written that Iori's body wasn't found…
Unbeknownst to him however…
An innocent man was running for his life. The man behind him, who had scraggly hair and a face of bloodlust, was chasing him down with a rusty knife. Iori closed in on his victim, who was starting to slow down out of exhaustion. Iori's victim pleaded for his life, as well as for Kira to save him. Iori had then started to mock him.
"Oh, save me, Kira! Save me! Please give this poor, poor, excuse of a man a fatal event that will never happen! Please, Kira's nothing more than a child's tale. Now then…"
As he raised his knife, the victim closed their eyes. This was it for them, the end of the line, and they had ended up here. But… something was wrong. Why hadn't he felt anything yet? Why hadn't the painful feeling of the knife going in started yet? He opened his eyes to Iori on his knees, clutching at his heart. The knife was on the ground, and Hakuro Iori was dead in front of him. He then started to look around. What was this place? Why did it look like a village, and why did everyone just… disregard everything?
Why hadn't he died? Could he get out of here? Could he get back home? As we move on from these two that had suddenly appeared (and had an article made about them, being the first mention of Kira in this place), we move to someone else. The Kira Incident isn't too important to this archive, but it may be mentioned.
I suppose this is the end of this writing, for now. I'm hoping to write this in more of… neutral light. Something you would see in a traditional book with characters and all. It's nothing personal, but writing this way won't work for the rest of the archived events. Why? It would spoil everything, that's why.
DEATH NOTE: HOW TO USE
-Youkai older than 500 cannot be killed by the Death Note. Neither can any older than 500 use it.
AN: hoooooly fuck this was a monumental task of its own. This might be proofread, it might not. This concept is something I've had for the past senior year, and I have worked with a friend of mine on it to make sure everything goes well. This prologue's writing style, which won't be repeated until the end, was inspired by the style used in the B.B. Los Angeles murder novel (which I adore to death, how Mello narrates the beginning especially is super funny lk;sdafgj;lkasdfg;lkjjakdfgh). I hope you've enjoyed this so far, and hopefully I can get this story done.
Update as of 5/21/2023: Added in the HOW TO USE section, separated by lines.
