This Child Complete Us:
Baby's First Spell

"What's going on here!" a voice suddenly called to the two witches.

Raine looked over their shoulder and saw the owners of the stand. Morton and his son, Junior, looked ready to blow their top when they saw the two witches in their stand. Their anger was forgotten when they got a good look at the human.

"Morton!" Raine nearly screamed, jumping to their feet. "We need your help! This child was covered with one of your potions and is now burning up."

The older potion maker quickly went into his stand and scanned his shelves. He suddenly gasped and looked at his son.

"Son, get the counter-potion for product 336, and be quick about it!' Morton said quickly.

Junior nodded and hurried into the stand, going for the basement in the back. Raine watched this and noted how dire the older potion marker sounded.

"What's happening, Morton?" Raine asked as the stand owner joined the two witches.

Morton looked at Eda, whose eyes hadn't left the child since he got there, and then looked at Raine.

"The child is suffering the effect of a burn-bright potion," Morton explained. "It wasn't meant to be used on living creatures."

Raine could feel a pit growing in their stomach as they looked at Camila. They realized things were worse than they first thought. They try to keep their panic under control as they look at the stand owner.

"Is there anything we could do?" Raine asked calmly.

"My son is getting the counter-potion now," Morton replied, "We could help by keeping the child as cool as possible."

Raine nodded and looked at Eda. They frowned when Raine noticed the state Eda was in; she was lost in her own world, staring at Camila in a trance-like state.

"Eda…EDA!" Eda semi-snapped out of her trance when Raine yelled and looked at her partner. "We need to keep Camila cool enough until Morton's son gets back with the counter-potion."

Eda nodded, somewhat absentmindedly, and brought up a hand. She began making a spell circle. Raine saw how shaky their girlfriend's hand was. It looked like Eda's spell circle could fall apart at any moment.

Raine, without thinking, reached out and placed a hand on Eda's. The wild witch looked their partner in the eyes, and the bard smiled reassuringly.

"Hey," Raine said softly, "I'm here."

Eda nodded as her eyes became more focused and tried her spell circle again. Her hand was more steady this time, and she finished her circle. She moved the circle over the human, and a blast of frigid air came from the circle.

"Make sure you don't make the air too cold," Morton instructed. "We don't want to shock her body."

Eda nodded and made adjustments to her spell.
Thankfully, Junior returned with the counter-potion. He wordlessly handed the potion to his father, and Morton went to work.

He popped the cork off the vial and did a spell circle. He instructed Eda to move her spell circle, and the potion maker moved his over to the human. He poured the potion into the spell, and it turned into a mist.

The witches watched as the mist covered Camila, and they saw a reaction immediately. The human's breath evened out, and the heat the witches felt faded.

After Morton finished pouring the potion into his spell circle, the mist disappeared after a few seconds. He leaned down and pressed his hand against Camila's forehead.

"Good, the Burn-Bright potion is gone," Morton said with relief and then looked at Raine. "But I suggest you let a healer look at her. We don't know if anything was affected by the potion."

Raine nodded and turned to the human and their girlfriend. They leaned down and pressed their hand on the human's forehead. They frowned as they felt that Camila's head was still warm, but this was probably due to a lingering fever.

"Eda," they said calmly. "I know of a healer close by who owes me a favor. Do you think you can help get Camila there?"

Eda absentmindedly nodded and picked up the human gingerly. Raine noticed how unbalanced their girlfriend was and got close to her. They wrapped an arm around Eda's waist and lightly pressed her against their side.

Eda offered Raine an empty smile as they guided her to the local healer.

(A few hours later)

Eda sat against a wall in Camila's room, eyes never leaving the human.

It had been nearly two hours since the incident at the market, and since then, she and Raine had taken Camila to see a healer. To the two witches' relief, Camila wasn't in any serious danger.

The healer did advise that they keep the human body temperature down; while the Burn-Bright potion was nullified, Camlia still had a bit of potion-induced fever.

So, after getting home, Eda had been at Camila's bedside, keeping a cooling spell on her. Raine had checked in on them and was worried when Eda didn't even acknowledge them.

Speaking of the bard…Raine stood outside of Camila's door, mainly looking at it. This would be the third time checking on the two, and they knew nothing would change.

"Eda," Raine said, loud enough for their girlfriend to hear but hopefully not to wake Camila. "Can I come on?"

They waited a minute and entered when they got no answer. They weren't surprised to find the scene unchanged and were about to take their leave.

"...Seven years," Rain heard Eda mutter.

The bard looked back at their girlfriend and saw her looking at Camila with distant eyes. Raine wordlessly joined their girlfriend and wrapped an arm around her.

The two sat there in silence for nearly two minutes, just enjoying each other company.

"Seven years, Raine," Eda said somberly. "I have been making fools out of the Emperor's Coven for that long. In all that time, they haven't even come close to touching me. I thought…I thought those cultists would be the same."

Raine sighed and took their arm off of Eda. They slumped forward slightly and held their hands in front of them. They flexed their fingers for a few seconds as they gathered their thoughts.

"I was the same," they said quietly. "While I was alarm and focused, a part of me thought I could handle them without much trouble."

Raine growled as they thought back to that time just a few hours ago.

"The way they fought was like nothing I have ever seen before. It was like they could talk without using words. It wasn't long before they got more than one over me, and most of them got away."

Eda let out a bitter laugh and said, "Yeah, and none of it would have happened if I didn't get cocky and thought I could handle watching Camila."

"Eda…" Raine looked at their girlfriend sympathetically.

They reached out to comfort Eda, but the wild witch swatted the hand away. She looked at her partner with a "don't pity me" look before she buried her face in her arms.

"Titan, Raine! I was wrong! I got cocky because I never felt like I was in too deep," Eda said somberly. "But I could feel like that because it was only my neck on the line. But this, this feels so different, and I don't know what to do."

Raine sighed and leaned back against the wall. They were trying to find some words that might comfort their girlfriend when suddenly, they heard a moan. The two looked to see Camila stirring. In an instant, Eda pushed herself from her spot and got closer to the human.

Slowly, Camila opened her eyes and blinked. She looked around in a daze and smiled slightly when she saw Eda. The wild witch tried to return the gesture, but her smile was forced.

Thankfully, Raine stepped in before things got too weird.

"Hey, Camila," they said softly. "How are you feeling?"

"...thirsty," the human replied weakly.

Raine nodded, smiled softly, and looked at Eda. Their smile turned a little awkward when Eda glared at them with a look that was telling them not to leave her along with the human.

Still, the bard left to fetch Camila her water.

The wild witch sighed and then awkwardly but guiltily looked at the human. Camila looked groggily at the witch, her mind still not fully awake.

"So," Eda said awkwardly, "Anything else you need, squirt?"

Eda noticed that Camila was still looking at her. No, the wild witch realized the human was looking at the magic circle around her wrist, the one she was using to control the cooling spell.

Eda grinned as she realized something, something that might help distract Camila and stay off the bad experience she had just gone through for a while.

"Pretty cool, right?" Eda asked with a genuine smile. "If you want to use one spell a lot, like the over your head, you just slap one of these on, and you're good."

Eda frowned as a thought came to her as she watched the human look up at the spell. If Camila was up and about, her potion-induced fever should have passed. So, there was no need to keep the spell going.

She was about to end the spell when she heard Camila gasp. Eda looked at the human and saw how intensely she was looking at the spell circle. She cocked an eyebrow and looked at her circle. It was just a standard magical circle blasting cold air.

So, what could the human being staring at?

Camila suddenly jumped to her feet and began looking around her room.

"Wow, squirt," Eda said, panicking slightly. "You shouldn't move around that much! Your fever may not be completely gone."

Camila wasn't listening; she was completely driven by whatever she saw. She might have continued if she didn't suddenly stop. Eda watched as the human's eyes shrunk to pea, and she began shaking.

"Nononononono!" Eda nearly screamed as she jumped to her feet.

Camila screamed as Eda wrapped the human girl in a hug. The wild witch held Camila tight as she could feel the tears running down her dress as Camila's entire body shook.

"What's wrong?" Raine asked, rushing into the room. "I heard Camila scream."

Eda didn't answer; she was too busy comforting Camila to answer. Raine quickly realized that the memories of the day's event must have come back, and they joined the hug.

Together, the two witches silently held the sobbing human.

It had nearly taken an hour for Camila to calm down, and after that, she was so exhausted that she passed out. Eda and Raine let the child rest, and the bard cast their "no dream" spell to ensure she had a good sleep.

Eda even kept her cooling spell, though much, much weaker, on the human so she could have some comfort. Afterwards the two witches busy themselves while they wait.

Raine decided to clean the Owl House as best as they could, and Eda was trying to make some food. But neither witch's mind was on the tasks they were trying to do. Several times, Raine would pick something up, stare off into space for a few seconds, and then put it down.

Eda was no better. She was just standing over the stove, hand lightly gripping the handle of a pot. Thankfully, Hooty, in a rare moment of insight, kept his eyes on the wild witch and made sure the stove wasn't on.

Nearly another hour passed before signs of life appeared in the Owl House.

The two witches stopped what they were doing when they heard the noise of creaking wood. Eda and Raine were at the stairs in an instant.

"Camila!"

"Squirt!"

The two witches beamed when they saw Camila up on her feet. They both hugged the human and began rapidly firing questions.

"How are you feeling?"

"Do you still have a favor?

"Are you sure you should be up and about?"

"Are you hungry? I can whip you up something real quick?"

The two might have continued if Hooty, in another moment of insight, hadn't wrapped himself around Eda and Raine and moved them to the couch.

"You can play twenty questions when Cammy is ready," The house demon said in a scolding but playful voice.

Eda and Raine blinked and slowly looked at Camila. The two felt like kicking themselves when they saw how overwhelmed the human looked. They looked at each other and silently agreed to take things slower.

With a short exhale, Raine stood up and walked over to Camila. They made sure to keep a reasonable distance from the human so as not to risk triggering her again.

"Sorry about earlier," Raine said softly. "Is there anything you like?"

Camila was still a little overwhelmed from a second ago, but she managed to say, "Can I get some water?"

Raine couldn't help but chuckle, remembering they were supposed to get the girl some water when she first woke up.

Raine nodded and headed into the kitchen as Camila walked over to Eda. The human got onto the couch and stared at Eda. The wild witch, while always one for attention, was a little weirded by the looks she was getting.

"Need something, squirt?" the wild witch asked awkwardly.

"Can you do that spell again?" Camila asked politely.

Eda stared at the human and then smiled as she realized what Camila was asking. With a surprisingly motherly smile, she made a spell circle and aimed it at Camila.

The human let a surprised giggle as the chilly air hit her face. The sound of laughter caused Eda's smile to grow ever so slightly. She was about to stop the spell when Camila took out a small notepad and a pen from her pockets.

Eda cocked an eyebrow as Camila began to draw something, something only she could see. Camila looked up from the notepad and frowned. She tore the paper off, crumbled it, and began again.

"Camila, I have your water," Raine said kindly, stepping into the living room.

They cocked an eyebrow when they saw the sight. They looked at Eda for answers, and the wild witch just shrugged awkwardly. Curious, they set the glass of water on the table and watched as things unfolded.

It took a few minutes, but Camila was finally able to get whatever she saw in the circle right and showed it to the two witches.

The first thing that came to Eda's mind was the drawing looked like a sword with a comedically large guard. Raine, however, thought that it was more like an arrow being notched into a bow.

"That's great, squirt," Eda said awkwardly, calling off her spell. "But what is it?"

"I…don't know," Camila replied, looking at the drawing.

Curiously, she gingerly touched the paper.

Raine blinked as black lightning came from Camila's finger's tip, and she yelped when the paper suddenly disintegrated and a small ice ball formed.

The two witches and one human watched as the ball hit the couch and bounced onto the floor, where it rolled under the couch.

No one moved or blinked as they all stared at the spot where the ice ball hit. Finally, someone found their voice.

"What in the Titan's name just happened? Eda exclaimed.

Hearing Eda's voice snapped everyone out of their stupor, and Raine looked at the wild witch.

"I think," Raine said slowly, "Camila just did magic."

Eda looked at her partner skeptically, but she didn't say anything, not with what she just saw. The bard saw this and turned to the human.

"Camila," Raine said, "Can you do that again."

The young girl nodded and looked at her notepad. She began to draw, and this time, it didn't take her long to recreate the symbol.

"Why don't you put it on the table?" Raine suggested.

Camila nodded and put the paper on the table. She was about to press it when Raine gently grabbed her hand. The human girl looked at Raine curiously as the bard out of their scroll.

"Just a second," They said softly and then took a picture before smiling at Camila. "I noticed you were having trouble with the drawing. This way, you would have something to work from."

Camila nodded with a smile and turned her attention to the paper. She gave the symbol a firm press, and black lightning shot from her fingertip.

The paper disintegrated a second later, and ice, roughly the size and shape of the glass, took its place. Camila couldn't help but marvel at this sight; she stared at her creation with sparkles in her eyes.

Eda and Raine were also captivated by this sight but for different reasons. They just saw a human do magic, something that should be impossible. Adding to their woes was the fact that said human did it in a way no witch had ever done before.

I wonder if people would think I was uncreative if I gave Camila the first spell she tried to use on screen. Oh, well, I always do things my way. Next up, everyone's favorite aunt appears, and we might learn some more about the cult and their leader.
