Tangled Souls:

Hey everyone, welcome to Chapter 2 of Tangled Souls. Originally, I planned to have this be both a Naruto/Ichigo chapter, but I decided to let both of them have their own chapters reacting to the previous night. I promise the pace of the story will pick up after these chapters.

Arc I: The Runaway and the Substitute:

Chapter 2: Reunion

Cold silver light from the big round moon poured down onto the street, ruined with slash marks and broken asphalt. In front of the crumbling remains of the Kurosaki family home, Naruto knelt over his old friend Rukia Kuchiki as he cradled her head in his arm. Her raven hair fell about her face and onto her snow-white kimono in feathered waves. She looked like a life-sized doll, frail and weak, all her Spirit Energy drained. His stomach fluttered–whether from nerves, or excitement was impossible to say–as he looked at her up close for the first time in nearly two decades.

He knew eventually he'd have to let her go and begin the process of cleaning up, but for now he savored this moment, brief as it was.

A piece of broken asphalt crumbled underneath a wooden heel, followed by the repeated clack-clack-clack of geta sandals. Naruto turned his gaze upwards, spotting a man in loose-fitting black and green robes walking towards him, one hand holding a simple wooden cane, the other kept clutched a white and green pin-striped bucket hat to the mans head. Fluffy blond hair peered out from beneath the hat.

Over the blond's shoulder, a tall, deeply tanned, bespectacled man walked. His plain white t-shirt clung tightly to bulging muscles, contrasted sharply with the spectacles he pushed up on his nose, and the well-maintained handlebar mustache quivering above his lip.

The blond man let out a whistle, surveying the ravaged street. "My oh my, what do we have here? Seems like you made a bit of a mess Naruto. How very uncharacteristic of you Captain–"

"Cut the crap Kisuke, the kid and the hollows did all the damage." Naruto jerked his head to Ichigo's unconscious form to emphasize his point.

Normally, Naruto didn't mind bantering with his friend. They both enjoyed the odd practical joke to lighten the mood, but now wasn't the time. He could hear sirens in the distance, no doubt drawn by the terrible noises the hollows had made as they wrecked the street. He glanced around, searching the rubble at the front of the Kurosaki home for a particular figure.

"Where's Isshin? He can stop laying around since the kids out."

"Right here."

Isshin wound his way through piles of splintered wood and brick, Karin cradled in his arms. Naruto recognized her by her black hair; it was hard to connect anything else to the fussy baby he'd known when he lived with the Kurosaki's during the first two years of his recovery. His old friend had changed over the years. He'd grown a bit of facial hair, around his face and mouth, and he looked a bit older. The former captain's face was caked in drying blood, courtesy of a nasty cut, his hair was stiff and messy. He looked far more serious than he usually was. Isshin carefully set Karin down next to Yuzu. Both the girls had superficial cuts, though nothing serious.

"Tessai, you mind fixing them up? I'm afraid healing Kido is beyond my reach right now; it was never my forte in the first place."

"Of course, I'll get right on it Isshin." Said the bespectacled man. He stepped around Isshin, holding his hands out over the girls. A green barrier popped into existence, forming a glowing rectangular prism around the girls. Lit by the pale jade glow, their wounds slowly disappeared.

Naruto got up, reluctantly setting Rukia down as he shook hands with his old friend. "Good to see you Isshin. Though I'm sorry about the hollows, I should have gotten here sooner."

Isshin brushed off his concerns. "He was bound to get attacked eventually; it was just bad luck." He said, Naruto followed his gaze as it lingered on the giant form of Rukia's Zanpakuto. "Really bad luck."

He nodded grimly in agreement. Ichigo's own powers had been awakening already, but now Rukia had replaced them with her own. You couldn't possess two sets of Soul Reaper powers at once. Until they removed Rukia's powers, Ichigo couldn't train his own powers. And there was no safe process for removing them.

"Until we figure something out, I guess I'll have to focus on Kido and the other techniques for training. Jeez, kids a pain in the ass. He takes after his old man too much."

"Oh yeah wise guy?" Shouted Isshin, he shoved his face against Naruto's aggressively.

"Yeah, now buzz off." He replied, flicking Isshin in the forehead and launching the man ten feet through the air.

His friend tumbled to the ground, before scrambling to his feet and pointing at Naruto. "Holding the fact you got your powers back and I don't over my head, I see how it is!"

Kisuke coughed into his hand, drawing their attention.

"As entertaining as this is gentleman, we should get a move on, the police are almost here. It's time to clean up."

The sirens had grown closer, a low rhythmic whine steadily approached, accompanied by glowing red lights only a few streets away. No doubt they could easily use a Kikanshiki–a memory replacement device, used by Soul Reapers–to re-write the emergency responders memories, but it would still be a hassle for Kisuke, Tessai, and Isshin to explain. Far better that they cleared out as much as possible now.

Isshin nodded, he eyed the red lights, "I'll stay here with Tessai and clean up, you guys should take the lieutenant back to Kisuke's."

Naruto bent and lifted Rukia into his arms. She was light, her weight almost nonexistent. Her head lolled gently on the arm supporting it. Before leaving, he glanced at Isshin. "Oh, by the way, I expect you to come clean to Ichigo about your past. Training the kid is already going to be a hassle without him being ignorant of what he is. I won't demand you tell him about Masaki or the Hollow, but he should at least know about his original powers. Though I think it's foolish to keep his true heritage from him, he's your kid."

Isshin nodded sullenly, as if he'd been forced to eat a particularly bitter lemon.

His request satisfied, Naruto followed silently, as Kisuke led him away. They traveled swiftly, whisking through side alleys and other lesser traveled areas as they moved using Flash Step. Their flight took them to a part of town with looming office buildings, each taller and more sprawling than the next. Tucked between all of them, was an old-fashioned shop.

It looked well cared for, but had seen better days, with a weather-beaten wood exterior, and clay tiles for shingling.

Kisuke slid aside the glass-paned door. He paused at the entry, and waved Naruto into a darkened store front. There were a few shelves lined with candies, as well as a cash register. Though that was just a front for the real products Kisuke sold.

His shaggy-haired guide slipped off his wooden sandals, padding lightly through the store and down a hallway. Naruto followed, he had to turn sideways to carry Rukia through. They followed behind Kisuke, until he stopped outside a small bedroom, flicking on the light, the meager space inside was revealed. It wasn't much, mostly just a square tatami floor with a futon lying on the ground.

"Set her down in here."

Naruto nodded and swept past his friend to gently lay Rukia down on the futon. He carefully positioned her head, placing a pillow underneath it before tucking her in under a set of cozy covers. He hesitated, as he placed the covers under her chin. He yearned to touch her cheek once more, just to make sure she was real.

He pulled back, reluctantly getting to his feet as Kisuke shot him a look. "I take it you and Miss Kuchiki here are acquainted? Does that mean you'll be staying for the explanation when she wakes up? A friendly face would certainly help."

The way he asked the question was heavy with implication, one that Naruto couldn't exactly refute. He and Rukia had never been explicitly romantic. Things never got that far, there never seemed to be enough time.

"She was my best friend in Soul Society. I didn't think I'd get a chance to see her again." He answered, before adding, "And no, I won't. It's just … too sudden. "

Naruto stood, ready to leave. The shopkeeper pulled out a folding fan. He used it to hide his face as He peered at Naruto impishly from behind his hat's brim.

"Alright then, you should get going. Don't wanna be late for school tomorrow now do you? Make sure to make me and Yoruichi proud."

"Don't make me kick your ass." He groused, halfheartedly swiping at Kisuke as he left.

Naruto made his way down the silent hall, and back out into the night. The city had fallen quiet. Crickets sang while the distant whisper of cars drifting through the deserted streets eased his mind. When he'd first come to the human world, it was impossible to get used to the constant noise of traffic. Now he couldn't imagine not having it playing in the background of his day-to-day life.

Looking up at the stars, Naruto heaved a great sigh. Kisuke was right about one thing, he had to get back home so he could go to sleep. He couldn't be late on his first day of class.

x-x-x-x-x-x- TS -x-x-x-x-x-x

The next day, Naruto woke to the incessant blare of his alarm clock. He shut the thing off before the first note was out. His eyes snapped open, fully awake and sitting up with a big stretch. He let out a content sigh as his muscles stretched. If it were any other morning in the past eighteen years, he'd be able to enjoy a couple of hours slowly getting going. But today wasn't any other day–it was his first day of school.

Naruto got out of bed and quickly padded into his bathroom for a quick shower to wash off the night's stink. Ten minutes later he emerged from the bathroom already dressed in his uniform, an orange t-shirt under a grey blazer, with matching slacks.

After wolfing down a bowl of cold cereal, Naruto picked up a sleek shoulder bag with all his books and supplies inside. Soon, he was out the door and on his way to his first day of class.

A cool, watery blue sky waited for him as he exited his apartment building. The sun was just barely beginning to crest the horizon, spreading a few sparse bars of warm light to ease the chill. Naruto slung his bag over his shoulder and stuffed his hands in his blazer pockets, before proceeding to walk down the street towards his new school.

Being only a couple blocks away from Karakura High, he passed by several groups of students, clusters of boys and girls chatting about early term. Invariably, as he passed, the conversations would fall silent–accompanied with hushed whispers–as they recognized him as a new student to their school.

"Whoah, look at his hair, think he's some kind of delinquent like Kurosaki?"

"Who knows, best steer clear."

He hid a smirk and continued down the sidewalk. Before long, he was passing through the gates into Karakura High's entrance yard. He passed through easily enough, with his height and the way his muscles strained the uniform, a number of students opted to scurry out of his way. Out of the corner of his eye, Naruto caught sight of a trio of boys tucked inside a small gap between the buildings, smoking a cigarette while surveying the crowd. They wore fancy shades, with pompadour hairdos. Their eyes instantly locked on him.

'That would be a pain in the ass.' As the one smoking went to put out his cigarette, Naruto hurried along. He could easily handle the punks, but why bother?

Instead, he ducked inside the main building, and walked at a quick but normal pace as he climbed the stairs to the fourth floor. As he stepped out onto the landing, the hallway was deserted. The quiet murmur of voices came from the several classrooms on the floor. No doubt everyone had already gathered for homeroom. Strolling to the door marked 3C, Naruto knocked on the sliding door sharply.

A few moments later, he heard the tap of flat shoes across the ground, and the door slid open. Miss Occhi poked her face through, her brown eyes instantly lighting up as she spotted him.

"Good, you're here before class. Let's get you introduced."

"Sure thing."

Following behind the much smaller Ms. Occhi, Naruto swept his gaze across his new classmates. He felt for each of their spirit energies, not expecting much.

To his surprise, there were actually four relatively large presences. Perhaps unsurprisingly, two of them were the black-haired girl and the silent giant he'd seen with Ichigo the day before. Another came from a buxom girl with long orange hair, who chatted enthusiastically with the black-haired girl. Finally, there was a bespectacled boy with sharp facial features and straightly combed black hair sitting near the back of class. He had a severe looking face. The boy watched Naruto, concealed contempt in his eyes.

Naruto felt a shiver down his spine as the teen used a subtle method of tracking spirit energy. Ephemeral ribbons filled the air, visible only to two people. Amidst a sea of white ribbons, was a single crimson one coming from Naruto himself.

'Using spirit ribbons? The kid kinda reminds me of that Ryuken guy. And with that stick up his ass look, there's no doubt, that kids a Quincy.' Naruto had only met the uptight Quincy a couple of times while living in Karakura. Still, he was a hard one to forget. On physical appearance alone he would guess the boy was Ryuken's.

He snapped back into focus, as he reached the front of the classroom with Ms. Occhi.

"Attention everyone, we have a new student today," She called for order, getting the students to quiet down as the pretty young teacher motioned him forward. "Please, introduce yourself."

"Of course," Naruto took a couple steps forward, placing himself firmly at the center of attention, he offered them a short bow, "My name's Naruto Uzumaki, I just moved here from Kyoto. I look forward to learning with you. If anyone's got questions, feel free to ask, I'm a friendly guy." Spotting a girl with brown hair cut into a bob raising her hand, Naruto gave a teasing smirk. "And yes, my hair is real. My dad was American."

The girl lowered her hand, her cheeks slightly pink. When it became clear no more questions would be forthcoming, Ms. Occhi directed him to three empty desks near Ichigo's friends.

"Take a seat next to Tatsuki, she can help if you have any questions for your first day."

At the sound of her name, the girl with stylishly unkempt black hair glanced up. Naruto picked his way between the desks, before finally slinging himself down into the empty desk. He leaned back in his chair while grinning pleasantly at Tatsuki.

"Sup, Tatsuki, right?"

"Yep, Tatsuki Arisawa. Nice to meet you."

"Likewise."

As they spoke, the busty girl with tangerine colored hair interjected like a ball of sunshine and bubbliness, with an enthusiastic innocent smile.

"Hi Naruto, I'm Orihime, Orihime Inoue. Tell me, are you some kind of secret superhero or something? That's usually how it is in the manga, a mysterious new student arrives out of nowhere, and he's secretly a hero!"

"Uh, hi Orihime. No, I'm not a hero." He answered in bemusement.

Tatasuki chuckled as Orihime pouted. She rubbed the other girl's hair affectionately, like a little sibling. "Don't mind Orihime, she's a bit fanciful, but she's really nice."

Naruto nodded in agreement, he was studying Tatsuki curiously, particularly how she seemed to unconsciously position herself protectively in front of the busty orange haired girl. Between that, and the confident way she spoke, with just a hint of brashness, he found himself intrigued. His gaze slid past the girls and to the hulking boy behind them. The boy stood out because he was probably the only person Naruto had encountered in Japan who was taller than himself.

"Hey, what's your name big guy?"

"…Yasutora Sado. Though Ichigo calls me Chad." The boy replied in a deep, rich tone, patient and unhurried, like an oak tree come to life.

"Speaking of Ichigo, where is he?" Orihime asked suddenly.

Tatsuki sighed. "When I was leaving, there was a big hole in their home. Apparently, some moron went right into the living room and just drove off. Nobody got hurt, but I'd guess he's dealing with that."

Naruto stifled a chuckle of amusement. So that was what the memory replacer had come up with.

As they chatted, the intercom went off in the background. "Ms. Occhi, please come to administration. I repeat, Ms. Occhi to administration." At the front of the class, Ms. Occhi stood up in confusion, setting aside the book she'd been reading to pass the time.

"I'll be back soon class, so don't cause any trouble."

With their teacher leaving, Tatsuki turned her attention his way. "So, Naruto, what do you like doing as a hobby?" Tatsuki gave him a once over, focusing on the tight sleeves of his uniform. "You look pretty built, do any sports?"

"Eh, some martial arts, some kendo." He answered. It technically wasn't a lie.

Tatsuki's eyes seemed to light up when he mentioned martial arts. "Ya don't say! I'm the captain of the karate team. We should spar some time. If you're good enough, I'll have to make you join!"

"Oh really, and what do I get out of this?" Naruto couldn't help but chuckle at the precocious attitude of the brunette.

"Tch, careful saying stuff like that, people will think you're a perv like Keigo." Tatsuki jerked her thumb at a rather animated chestnut haired boy, who looked their way upon hearing his name.

The boy leapt over, sweeping his arm across his chest dramatically as if wounded. "Tatsuki, how can you be so mean? It's a young man's responsibility to try and enjoy the spring of his youth. If only you weren't so cold!" From devastation, the boy's personality suddenly did a one-eighty as he turned to Naruto and gave him a suspicious look. "And as for you new guy, you seem nice enough, but don't go getting any funny ideas, being so near the prettiest girls in class, I know how pretty boys are!"

With one last suspicious look, Keigo turned and marched back to his seat where he began chatting with a black-haired boy.

"Pretty boy, huh?" Naruto couldn't help but laugh. He liked to think he was handsome, but he'd never been called a pretty boy. Tatsuki laughed as well.

"Keigo's harmless, even if he's always trying to chat up girls. See what I mean, don't wanna give the impression you're doing the same."

"And who says I wasn't?" His eyes shone mischievously, enjoying the light blush that stole across Tatsuki's cheeks.

"Shut up, idiot."

After another round of laughter, they began chatting about the local area, with Ichigo's friends suggesting the best places to eat–a local steak house with great prices–and where the arcade was.

Eventually, less than five minutes before the bell for their home room period, Ms. Occhi returned. She quickly called attention to herself.

"Attention class, it seems we have another transfer student, though it's a bit last minute. Come in please."

The door to the room slid open, and the smile on Naruto's face froze. He felt something constricting his chest, as he watched Rukia glide to the front of the room. She looked like a pixie, dressed in the uniform with her short hair. She wore a pleasant smile with her eyes closed as she bowed politely.

"Hello, my name is Rukia Kuchiki. It's nice to meet you all–" Rukia's introduction cut off with a stifled gasp, as she looked up and immediately set eyes on him. "Naruto?"

His name passed her lips in a whisper, he doubted anyone else heard it. For a moment he froze like a deer in the headlights. 'Dammit Kisuke!' This reeked of one of Kisuke's pranks, he was the only one who could arrange for Rukia to join so quickly. And he hadn't bothered filling Naruto in, the damn fool probably laughed his ass off at the idea of him meeting Rukia for the first time like this.

Rukia's shock was like a fleeting memory. Ever the professional, she covered her mixed emotions with a bubbly close-eyed smile to Ms. Occhi. "Where do I sit, Ms. Occhi?"

"Oh, why don't you sit by Naruto there?" Ms. Occhi suggested harmlessly, heedless of the way Rukia reacted to his name.

The petite woman nodded pleasantly and sauntered over to the desk on his right. Rukia took her seat, offering him a polite–though somewhat tight–smile, he returned it with an easy grin. She stared at him with a stricken expression. She opened her mouth, as if to say something, but the shrieking sound of the bell marking the beginning of class interrupted her.

As Ms. Occhi left, and a balding, stick thin man took her place and introduced himself as their math teacher, Naruto faced forward, acutely aware of the glances Rukia kept sending him.

Even as three classes passed, her eyes kept finding him, scrutinizing his every mannerism then shaking her head like a dog, as though she was seeing a hallucination. When the bell for the end of third period rang, Rukia stood up quickly, weaving her way through the other students as they prepared to eat their lunches. Tatsuki stared after her curiously.

"Wonder what's with her."

Naruto shrugged, silently waiting until a quiet moment so he could slip away. His moment finally came, and he seized it, slipping away from class and going into the busy hallway. He followed the minute traces of Rukia's spirit energy. The trail led him to the roof, which wasn't much of a surprise. She always did like to find high places to perch, a bit like a cat. He found her perched on the fenced ledge, peering out over the city.

Hearing the scuff of his shoes, she turned, eyes widening in panic.

"Um, Naruto, what are you doing here? If it's about the staring, I apologize, it's just you look remarkably similar to an old friend. I meant no offense."

"Well, I'd hope I looked familiar, Ruki. I know it's been eighteen years, but still."

The raven-haired woman's violet eyes watered, her lips trembled precariously as a pained whisper passed, "Is it … really you?"

His normally impish expression melted away, giving way to a kind and gentle smile.

"Yeah, it's me Rukia."

For a moment, she didn't react. Then she finally flung herself at him in a rare outburst of emotion. Naruto opened his arms, catching her as she cried into his shoulder. Tears soaked into his blazer.

"You've been gone so long, everyone assumed you were dead. Why did you never make contact?"

Naruto patted her back gently, he tried to ignore the way the soft feeling of her backside on his forearm sent a pleasant tingle through his body.

"It's … complicated."

He trusted Rukia with his life, but there was no need for her to know about the reason for his banishment. It would only put her in more danger, more than giving Ichigo her powers. Maybe, if she was lucky, she might get a slap on the wrist for her transgression. But if it became known she knew about his own crime … she'd be lucky to go to the Maggots Nest.

Rukia pushed away from him, forcing her way to the ground as she glared up at him. "Complicated? That's not good enough, Naruto! I thought you were dead. It hurt … so much, worse than when Kaien … when he …" The petite Soul Reaper trailed off; her voice strangled to silence as she fought back angry tears. He wanted to reach out, to comfort her, but hesitance stayed his hand. "For some time, I thought I was cursed. Cursed to lose those I cared for. It's why I defied my brother and became an officer. So, try a bit harder Naruto."

Naruto looked at her softly, he felt a stab of guilt, at how badly his death had hurt her. "You went against Byakuya? Oof, he probably wished he could find my grave to piss on it for annoying him even when I was dead."

Her lips trembled, like she wanted to smile, but Rukia stubbornly kept her face severe.

"Naruto …"

"Okay, okay." He raised his hands placatingly. "My situation is … kind of like yours. Afterwards I took a while to recover, and I couldn't let people learn about it for the safety of some friends I'd made. So I decided to go into exile and hope people assumed I died."

He hoped, by revealing that much, and mentioning her own situation, Rukia would drop the issue. She was a sharp one. If he gave too many hints, she may just guess the situation. Luckily, it seemed to do the trick.

"You know about that?"

"Yep. I'm actually here to offer to train him."

Rukia puffed up her cheeks in offense. "Are you saying I'm not qualified to teach him, I'm a lieutenant now, I've grown a lot since you've been gone."

He couldn't help but smile in amusement. "You know, pouting like that just makes it impossible to take you seriously. It's too adorable."

"Naruto!" She cursed, pummeling him in the stomach and chest with hammer blows.

Naruto, seized her arms and held them at his sides, looking down at her with a cocky smirk. "Now, now, it's just I know I'd be better for him in particular. We're a lot alike, Ichigo and I. He's actually got powers of his own, I came here to train him. His parents are old friends. So why don't you take it easy and let me deal with the problem child student?"

She stared up at him petulantly, before finally relenting and relaxing against him in their awkward embrace. "… Fine."

"Glad to hear it." He replied, letting her arms drop and pulling her into a much more comfortable hug. "You know, hugging you like this, I really can tell you've grown. And not just in terms of power."

Rukia's cheeks turned rosy, she jumped up and slapped him across the face. "You haven't changed a bit, shameless pervert!"

Naruto couldn't help but laugh as his old friend began to berate him, pummeling him with her fists as she threw terms like "man whore" at him. Bantering like this, having her be indignant at a lewd remark. It made him feel like that part that had been missing the past eighteen years was finally back.

Well, what do you think? As I said, originally I planned for this to be a bit longer, but I decided to split the chapters in two. I'll probably have Chapter 3 out later this month and that wil be specifically Ichigo's perspective. After that I'll try to pick up the pace.

As always, thank you for your support. Feel free to like and comment, and make sure to check out the one piece pilots and vote for you favorite option for powers by giving it a like.
