Tenko's class ended ten or so minutes before Izuku's was due to, so at the end of the day he found himself alone, leaning against a tree out front of the school.
He was playing on his console, his bag on the ground next to him, sticking his tongue out in focus and ignorant of all the kids around him.
"Whatcha playing?"
Tenko yelped and almost dropped his console as he jumped to the side, away from the voice. He whirled around to see the same red winged kid, Keigo, who had been standing next to him.
"How do you keep sneaking up on me like that?" He breathed, allowing himself to relax from his startled stance.
Keigo rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. "Yeah, sorry bout that. I'm just naturally talented, I guess!"
Tenko huffed. "You'd think you'd be more noticeable with those giant wings of yours."
The boy laughed. "True, true. Maybe you're just not very observant."
Tenko gave him a flat look. "I was playing a game."
"Is that Villains To Heroes? I love that game!"
Tenko was suddenly stumbling back all over again and whirling to see the new voice that had appeared over his shoulder. The bunny girl stood, looking a bit smug at the startle. A few feet behind her the red and white haired boy was snickering.
Tenko groaned. "Great, there are more of you."
The bunny girl let out a full belly laugh and Keigo snickered.
"I agree fully," smirked the red and white haired kid.
Tenko straightened back up and stepped back over to the tree, sliding his console into his bag on the ground. "Yes, it's Villains To Heroes."
"Cool," bunny girl rested a hand on her hip. "You play a lot?"
Tenko shrugged. Truthfully, yeah, he played a ton. It was one of his Al time favorite games since it came out. But he wasn't gonna tell her that and risk her deciding it was something for them to bond over or whatever.
His attempt was in vain, however, as she grinned. "We should totally play sometime!"
He scrunched his nose up at the idea, but she seemed oblivious or ignorant to his lack of appreciation as she held her hand out. You're Tenko Midoriya, right? Rumi Usagiyama, but just call me Rumi."
Tenko bit back another sigh and took her hand, but didn't say anything in response.
The red and white haired boy stepped forward then, but didn't offer his hand, instead crossing them in front of his chest. "Touya."
Tenko blinked at the lack of a continuation, but just nodded, accepting the answer. He vaguely registered Keigo and Rumi trading glances.
"Why are you all telling me to call you by your first names?" He asked skeptically.
"Cause it's the first step to friendship, duh! Only friends use first names," Keigo grinned. Rumi nodded in agreement and Touya just glanced between them both and him.
Tenko blinked once, twice, then huffed and leaned back against the tree. "That's great and all, but I have no plans of making friends. So thanks, but I'm fine."
Between his quirk, his history, and his personality, everything about him said friends were a bad idea and would only end in someone getting hurt, anyways. It wasn't worth it, Izuku and his parents were enough.
Tenko didn't look up to see their expressions, instead reaching down to pull his console back down in hopes that they would leave him alone. But just as he was pulling it out, he paused when he heard a high pitch voice calling his name excitedly.
He just managed to set it back in the bag before the small weight ran into him and arms wrapped around his leg.
He straightened up and smiled down fondly, ruffling the mop of messy green curls with his hand. "Hey there, Zuku."
The little boy stepped away and started jumping up and down, grinning excitedly. "School was so much fun! You were right I didn't need to be nervous! Well, I mean, I did. It didn't exactly go well after Kacchan told everyone about me being quirkless, but I did meet Hitoshi! And he didn't care! He still wanted to be my friend, can you believe it, Tenko? He didn't hate me!"
Tenko frowned, both sad at the fact that Izuku was having to worry about other kids hating him already, and concerned of the mention of the other kids finding out and it not going great. But he quickly replaced the frown with a soft smile.
"I'm glad it went well." He glanced toward the road. "Mom hasn't pulled up yet so we've gotta wait a little longer."
Izuku followed his gaze towards the street, and that's when the little boy seemed to finally acknowledge the three other kids still standing there, staring wide eyed at the little boy. Finally, Rumi and Keigo broke into wide grins.
"Oh, who's this cutie?" Rumi said, kneeling down to be more on Izuku's level.
Tenko sighed. "This is Izuku, my little brother."
Rumi and Keigo both cooed. Tenko's attention flickered to Touya, who was still standing a little ways a way and was also watching Izuku. His gaze looked more fond and soft, like Izuku was something precious. Or he reminded him of something precious.
"Um, wh-who are th-they?" Izuku whispered, now more nervous and pressing in closer to Tenko's side. "A-are they y-your friends?"
Tenko opened his mouth to deny the fact, but Keigo beat him to it with a grin. "Oh, yes! Yeah, we're totally friends!"
Tenko scowled at the winged boy.
"Oh, really?" Izuku relaxed a bit and looked wide eyed first at him, and then at the three other kids. "Tenko made friends?"
Tenko once again opened his mouth to deny, but his mouth went dry at the excited grin Izuku shot at him. "That's great!" We both made our first friends! Now we can learn this whole friendship thing together!"
Tenko's shoulders slumped and he pointedly ignored the glances the three friends shared.
"Well, I- um, just…" Tenko could no longer find his words as he watched Izuku's grin slowly fade into disappointment. "Are they not your friends?"
Tenko grimaced slightly before glancing up at the three friends, Rumi and Keigo were both giving him a mixture of smug and pleading looks, and then back down at the beans adorably wide eyes.
He slumped further in resignation with a sigh and muttered his next words under his breath. "No, they- they are, I guess."
Keigo jumped up and cheered and Rumi crossed her arms smugly. Touya just looked amused, but Izuku was grinning again and wrapped his arms back around Izuku's legs. "Yay! Now you won't be lonely when I'm hanging out with Toshi!"
Tenko huffed, offended, but smiling fondly. He didn't miss that Izuku had already sentenced his new friend to a nickname. That was basically Izuku's declaration of friendship with someone.
Except for Tenko, apparently, which he was still a little bitter about.
"Hi, Izuku! My name's Keigo! And these are my friends Rumi and Touya." Keigo smiled at Izuku, his wings fluttering happily.
The bright red feathers caught Izuku's attention, and he stared in awe at them. "Your wings," he breathed. "Is that your quirk?"
"Oh!" Keigo said, glancing back at his wings. "Yeah, it is. I call it Fierce Wings!"
Izuku started to step forward, hand reaching out, before stopping and pulling back, glancing up at Keigo uncertainly. "Can I?"
Keigo flashed a grin. "Sure thing, green bean!"
Tenko bristled slightly at the use of his favorite nickname for Izuku, but shoved it down in favor of watching the interaction.
Izuku stepped towards the wings and Keigo stretched them out so they were bigger. Izuku reached up and felt one of the soft looking red feathers. His features immediately lit up.
"Woah," Izuku breathed. Keigo's feathers fluttered slightly against the touch, but Keigo just smiled wider if anything.
Izuku seems to notice the movement too and looked back at the boy. "Can you feel this?"
"Yeah, all my feathers are super sensitive. But don't worry, it just tickles a little."
"So cool," Izuku whispered, stepping away and grinning, still staring up at the wings. "You can fly?"
"I can, though I'm not really good at it yet."
"What kind of bird are they based off of? Or are they completely original? That would be super cool. It's mutation, right? Were you born with them or did they come in later? Can you control each feather individually or just the wings as a whole? Does it hurt when they get picked off? Do they ever fall off by themselves? Do they do that thing where they fall off every once and a while to regrow bigger or something?"
"Woah, there," Keigo chuckled. " I can't understand you when you're talking so fast."
Izuku flushed and rubbed the back of his neck. "Ah, sorry."
Tenko smiled fondly at his little brothers antics. He knew he'd like the wing quirk.
Keigo ended up sitting down on the grass while Izuku played with his feathers and answered the little boy's questions.
Rumi tried to chat with Tenko, but Tenko purposely gave short stand stunted answers, which eventually agitated the bunny girl who walked back over to Touya, who'd been quietly watching the whole thing from the side.
Soon enough a car pulled up that Tenko didn't recognize.
"Guys, my moms here to pick us up," Rumi directed towards her two friends.
"Oh, alright!" Keigo called, claiming to his feet, much to Izuku's disappointment. "Sorry, baby bird, I've gotta go now. But we'll see each other again, and maybe one day I could take you flying!"
"No," Tenko said sternly despite Izuku's pure excitement at the idea. "Not happening."
Keigo laughed and waved bye to them both before following Rumi and Touya towards the car.
Once they were gone, Tenko let his head fall against the tree trunk and sighed. They would never leave him alone now. Well, unless he scared them away. But he didn't exactly want enemies either.
"Are you ok, Tenko?" Izuku asked, looking up at him concerned.
Tenko nodded. "All good, bean. Just tired, I guess."
Izuku hummed in agreement as he flopped down on the grass, pulling his bag off his back. "School is tiring. I'm tired too."
Tenko hummed back and watched as Izuku pulled out his notebook and crayons and opened up to a clear page. He was probably gonna do one of his little analysis on Keigo's quirk.
And if the scribbles of red going outwards from a yellow stick figure said anything, yes. Yes he was.
"Tenko, how do you spell 'fierce'?"
Tenko smiled as he spelled it out for him.
Keigo had entertained Izuku's questioning. That was a good sign, he supposed.
Inko had to admit that a weight was lifted off her shoulders when Tenko and Izuku got in to her car looking completely fine, much better than they had when she left them that morning. Izuku even looked excited.
"Momma, momma!" Izuku squeaked as he clambered into the back seat while Tenko hopped into the passenger's. "School is so much fun! You were right, I do like it!"
Inko started to pull out of the parking spot. "Really? That's great!" She flashed a relieved grin at Izuku through the rear view mirror, then at Tenko, but he was already facing away, looking out his window.
"Yeah, I made a friend! And Tenko made friends too!"
Inko's eyebrows rose but she continued grinning and shot another glance at Tenko, who was looking forward now. She hadn't expected them to have friends already on the first day, especially Tenko, being how reserved he was.
Izuku continued his rambling before she could say anything. "I met this really nice purple boy named Hitoshi! He's got a brainwashing quirk, and it's mental. How cool is that!? He looked really tired and didn't talk much, I think he's shy. But he doesn't care that I'm quirkless! He even told the teacher that he had to sit on the bench with me because of his quirk when everyone else was gonna play a quirk game and the teacher put me on a bench cause I couldn't play. He still wanted to be my friend, too!"
Inko felt a frown tug at her lips at Izuku getting left out of a game for being quirkless, but she decided she's come back around to that later with Hisashi. "That's amazing, honey! I'm so glad you made a new friend!"
Izuku was grinning and bouncing in his seat. "Tenko made friends too! I got to meet them! Their names were… uh, I don't actually remember, but there was three of them. One of the boys had these super awesome big wings as his quirk, and he let me ask questions about it! It was called, uh- free? Fire…?"
"Fierce," Tenko corrected suddenly.
Izuku lit up. "Yeah! Fierce Wings! It was so cool! I didn't get to ask the other two about their quirks, but the girl had bunny ears and a tail! I kinda wanted to feel the fluffy tail too but I didn't know if that would be too weird to ask or not. And the other boy, I couldn't tell what his quirk was but he had cool red and white hair and bright teal eyes! He was quiet, like Toshi."
Inko turned and smiled at Tenko, who glanced up at her then back down. "That's wonderful! What were their names, Tenko?"
He muttered under his breath but she could still hear it. "The winged one was Keigo Takami, the bunny girl was Rumi Usagiyama, and the red and white haired boy was Touya."
Inko glanced sideways at him at the abrupt stop. "Touya what?"
Tenko shrugged. "He didn't give me his last name."
Inko hummed. Then, she and Tenko seeeds to come to an idea at the same time as they both straightened and glanced at each other.
Tenko used to avoid telling people his last name too.
It was probably nothing.
