Season Six Episode Six
I Saw What I Saw
"Did you get paged, too," Kat asked on her way to the conference room.
"Yeah,"April said.
"I don't think it's anything bad," Reed voiced.
"Come on this many people, it has to be bad," Charles sighed before taking a seat.
"How long is this gonna take," Karev asked?
"Why you need to make a phone call," Jackson taunted?
And just like that Alex Karev jumped right on Jackson Avery. Before he was able to land a ouch Dr. Hunt and Dr. Shepherd came and broke it up. Well, tried to break it up, but that only add more fuel to the fire. As people started to yell more people started to stand and yell only making the problem bigger. Finally Chief Webber came out to stop the whole thing.
"Enough, I said enough," said Chief Webber in his stern voice. "What happened here tonight, what happened to that patient, was inexcusable. And we're gonna be here till I find out who's responsible for it. So until then, you will sit down, you will shut up and you'll wait to be called," He finished looking around at all the residents.
"Hunt," He called, and Dr. Hunt followed him into the room.
"I just sat down," Kat sighed.
"You heard the chief shut up," Jackson said rolling his eyes.
Not wanting to start anymore trouble she stayed quiet.
Dr. Hunt, I need you to me the lay of the land of your E.R. tonight, from the beginning," Chief Webber said.
"We were slammed with a mass casualty, a hotel fire. A half a dozen burn victims, a penetrating chest wound, a fire fighter with multiple traumas," Dr Hunt started to explain.
Chief Webber cuff him off "What doctors were working?"
"Yang, Grey, Karev, Hayashi, Adamson, that big kid whose name I don't know, Kepner, Avery and Torres," Dr. Hunt listed.
"And who was on the patient in question, the one that died," Larry from the board asked?
"Everyone, everyone was everywhere,"Dr. Hunt said not giving him a straight answer.
"All right, who got the chart first,"Chief Webber asked wanting to pinpoint one person.
"Dr. Kepner," Dr. Hunt answered.
"Thank you please send her in," Chief Webber asked?
"I assessed all injury's took care of some burns then page the plastic surgeon on call with was Dr Sloan," Kepner started. "I just did her initial exam. She was a burn victim not surgical. There was nothing more for me to do for her."
"Do you think someone's getting fired," Charles asked?
"No, no one's getting fired," Kat sighed pushing him back into the chair.
"Then why did they all call us here," Charles wondered?
"Someone's coming out," Reed pointed to the door.
"Page Dr. Sloan will you," the Chief asked dr shepherd?
"Sure thing sir," he replied.
"While I wait for him give me Hayashi," He requested.
Kat peeled her self of the back off the chair. And slowly walked over. She had never been to the principals office, but she'd imagined it would feel like this.
"So Hayashi let's get down to business. We're where you tonight," Webber asked?
"I had just finished up on bed 4, I was handing it over to the burn unit. When Dr. Torres asked if I was free because she needed a hand I said yes. So I went to help Dr. Torres, it was Roy Macinaw. He was a firefighter with a hip and femur fracture. I was with Torres in the OR after that," She explained.
"Did you leave to E.R. at any point," Webber asked?
"Yes when I took my patient to X-ray," Kat nodded.
"Did you ever hear Mrs. Becker say anything about pain," They lady to the right of Chief Webber asked?
"No ma'am," Kat stated.
"Where you ever in charge of Mrs Beckers care," Webber questioned?
"I never touched him sir I was in the O.R all night with Dr. Torres, then I went to go check on some of her post ops from earlier in the day," She told him.
"Okay, send Dr. Sloan in but stay in the hall I might need you later," He instructed.
"Okay," She nodded. Dr. Sloan was standing close to the door. "Chief Webber wants to see you," She told him.
"What was that about," Jackson asked?
"I don't know, I think something happened in the E.R. he asked me about Mrs. Becker."
"That's weird, I think I checked out her son," Reed added.
"I don't know what he wants to know about her but he asked me if I heard her say anything about pain," Kat told them.
"I never even touched her," Reed pushed back into the chair.
"Yeah well tell that to Webber not me," Kat huffed.
"Avery," Sloan pointed to the room.
"Good luck," Kat smirked.
"Did she die or something," Reed wondered?
"Yeah she died a few hours ago," Charles told them.
"I should be in bed sleeping, but I have to be here so I'm going to take a nap," Kat sighed leaned her head against the wall.
"Did you ever hear Mrs. Becker complain about any pain," Webber asked?
"No, not me personally, but a nurse did. He thought the patient was mine I guess came up and said she was in pain."
"Well did you order pain meds," Larry wondered?
"I didn't Yang did," Jackson replied.
"Next time I saw her she was dying," Jackson added.
"Send Yang back in," Webber instructed.
"When you saw Mrs. Becker last, she was dying," Webber wanted to get the story straight.
"No she wasn't dying. She said she had some pain," Yang explained.
"A nurse came over said Bed one was complaining of pain. That was Mrs. Becker, he wanted to know who's patient she was. So I skimmed through the charts and saw Alex initials on the chart, but he said she wasn't his," Yang stated.
"Have Karev come in for me," Webber sighed, this was going to be a long night he thought to himself.
"I never even seen that patient. I was stitching up nosedive," Karev groaned.
"Nose dive," Webber asked, not know who Karev was talking about.
"what's his name, the dude you know. The one that um , that um fainted," Karev told him.
"Oh Dr. Percy," The women spoke up.
"Nose dive that's going to stick," Larry chuckled a bit.
"So you were with Dr. Percy," Webber wanted to clear up all the confusion.
"It's still not over," Jackson lab coat laid over her now.
"Tell me about he keeps sending me in then out," Jackson sighed as he paced around.
"It's been over an hour," Kat pointed out.
Reed walked out of the office with her head hanging down. April grabbed her by the wrist as she passed by.
"What," April looked into her eyes.
"I'm sorry, I'm really , really sorry," Reed cried.
"Dr. Kepner," Webber came out to grabbed her this time.
She turned seeing the blank expression the Chiefs face then turned back to Reed looking at the sad look on her face. She knew something was wrong.
"What, what, what," April stuttered. " What did you tell them?"
Reed couldn't bear to break the news so she turned away and walked down the hall. April got a good look at all the eyes staring back at her. Kat offered her a sad smile. She blinked a few time before turning around and entering the chiefs office.
"So April missed an airway. That's so stupid," Charles walked over with Lexie Grey.
"Airway first," Grey chimed in.
"It's like med school 101, right," Jackson added.
"It's pretty basic," Alex voiced.
"It was one second. She got distracted and she made a mistake," Reed
"That we all nearly got fired for," Charlie's
"Nosedives got a point," Jackson
"Thank you. What," Charlie's
"We nearly got fired for trying to fix what she screwed up in the first place," Alex
"Yeah because that's our job. What you didn't make any mistakes today," Cristina
"Actually no I didn't," Kat spoke up.
"Oh shut up, this could've been you. But your patient didn't get caught that's why you're standing here and not cleaning out your locker. It could've happen to any of us," Kat couldn't help but smile in the short time she had know the girl she had never seen her stand up for something she believed.
After everyone scattered Kat stood in the same place still smiled.
"What are you looking at," Cristina snarled.
"You're hot when you speak with conviction," Kat said to Cristina before walking off.
"Here she comes," Jackson noticed.
They all watched as she passed by with her head down. Kat opened her mouth to say something but thought better of it.
"There goes my ride," Kat sighed.
"Are you really that insensitive. Do you lack empathy. Do you know understand the word compassion," Reed turned around.
"Calm down it's not that deep," Kat turned on the balls off her feet and walked away.
Kat Hayashi wasn't a beer drinker she was more like one glass of white wine while watching the rain pour from her apartment windowsill. But she no longer owns an apartment and white wine doesn't seem to fit her current state of mind. She felt someone slide onto the bar stool next to her. Too caught up in her own dilemma to pay him or her any mind.
"Can I get two shots of tequila and a coke," the women requested.
She looked over interested by the drink. Cristina Yang was sat with her arms on the bar, leather jacket still on and her long curls flowing down her back freely.
"Didnt take you for a tequila drinker," Kat voiced.
"Didnt take you for a beer drinker," Cristina pointed to the bottle infront of her.
"I'm not I actually think it's disgusting. Jackson loves a cold beer, I never found the appeal but I think it fits my mood," Kat explained.
"What's your normal drink of choice," Cristina questioned.
"It's,"
"Two shots of tequila and a coke," Joe slid the drinks over.
"Thanks," Cristina smiled turning back to Kat.
"I'm a white wine drinker, normally in the comfort of my own home. But I don't have one of those and the apartment is in chaos with April leaving," Kat over explained.
"I didn't ask your life story I just asked what you like to drink," Cristina looked at her Kat.
"Sorry," Kat sighed.
"Here," She handed her a shot.
"Oh no I'm good," Kat shook her head.
"You totally need this more than me," She smiled.
Kat sighed, the smile on that women was breathtaking. She'd do anything Cristina asked as long as she smiled while asking it.
"Okay," Kat took the shot glass from Cristina's hands.
She paused staring at the liquids.
"You don't stare at it you drink it," Cristina spoke slowly.
"Do it with me will you," Kat asked?
"Wow you really don't drink," Cristina smirked and Kat shook her head.
"Okay we can do it together," Cristina giggled picking up the other shot glass.
"On three," Kat started.
"On three really," Cristina looked at her as if she was crazy.
"Or would you prefer on one Dr. Yang," Kat sassed.
"You can be a piece of work when you want to be," Cristina mumbled putting the glass by her mouth.
"One, two, three," Kat let the liquid slide down her throat, leaving a burning sensation as it's parting gift to the throat. Her face contorted as the feeling lingered. Cristina couldn't help but smile. She was a party girl or an alcoholic but she started drinking in high school. So the feeling of tequila didn't bother anymore.
"You okay," Cristina smiled watching Kat compose herself.
"I think I will be," Kat shook her head trying to get the taste out of her mouth.
"Here you need this more than me," Cristina handed her the coke.
"Thanks," She cracked the can open and took a long sip.
"I've been looking all over for you," Jackson came over.
"Well I've been here for an hour almost," Kat looked up at him from her seat.
"We have to go talk April out of moving, come on," Jackson sighed.
"Sorry," She turned to Cristina. "But it was fun talking to you."
"Come on," Jackson rushed.
"Okay, okay," She huffed, before turning to wave goodbye.
"Bye, bye," Cristina watched as she walked out of the bar with Jackson Avery.
"What was that all about," Meredith asked as she sat next to Cristina eying the almost full beer bottle in front of her.
"I think I just meet my McDreamy," Cristina sighed.
