Season six episode eight
Invest In Love
"Oh that's me," Kat sighed as she looked at the pager.
"What is it," Jackson asked?
"In coming trauma," She picked up his underwear and threw it at him.
"They didn't page me," He rolled over.
"You're going to stay in the on call room naked by your self," Kat asked as she put in her bra?
"Well no but maybe they won't need you for long and you come back for round two."
"You wish," Kat pulled on the scrub pants.
Jackson pager started to go off. He let out a big huff rolling over.
"Thats you."
"I know," Jackson groaned put on the underwear in his hand.
Kat put on her shirt.
"Wait, wait for me," Jackson pulled on his pants.
"No I don't want people to think we're doing it," Kat laughed slipping on her shoes.
"But we are doing it," Jackson said as he put on his shirt.
"And it'll stay our little secret," Kat smiled as she left the room
"Hayashi, trauma room one," Hunt ordered, the chaos of the er was kind of soothing. Night shifts could be a pain but nights like this made it fun. She grabbed the chart entering the room.
"Woah," Kat looked at the girl with her bones standing out.
"Torres, is on her way start irrigating the wound," he ordered before leaving.
She sat the chart down on the table next to the gurney.
"The nurse just administered some pain meds so you start to feel better any second now," Kat spoke as she washed her hands.
"Okay," the girl whimpered.
"I am going to irrigate you wound so I can get a better look at it and get out some debris," She explained putting on the gloves.
The girl nodded watching Kat as she moved.
"This is saline which is just salt water kind of, but I'm going to be using it to clean out your wound. You shouldn't feel any pain, but it might be a slight discomfort ," Kat sat on the stool next to the gurney and began to clean.
"Ow," She groaned as Kat wiped around the area.
"I'm sorry, I'll be gentler," Kat looked up to see doctor Torres standing in the door.
"We need to get her to an or, now," Torres ordered.
"You heard her let's move," Kat pulled the railings up and started to move.
They grabbed each side of the gurney, Torres in back, Kat on the left, and Hunt on the right.
"Alright get another unite of packed cells, meet me in the O.R.," Torres told one of the nurses.
"Right away."
"Whoa, whoa, whoa," Dr. Robbins yelled. " We need the O.R."
Well, we need it, too. We're already on our way," Torres continued.
"There's only one O.R prepped this time of night," Robbins pointed out.
"Which is why we need it," Torres replied.
"Mines got a subdural," Robbins added.
"50 broken bone."
"Stroke in the womb," Robbins started to pick up speed.
Torres follow suit, jogging to get to the door. Nurse opened the door, almost bumping into the gurney. Allowing Robbins and Karev to get through to use the O.R.
Torres sighed. "Alright, uh, get another O.R. ready now," Torres yelled to the nurse
"On it."
"So today I got to do surgery on a girl with 50 broken bones," Kat bragged.
"All I got was to work in a nicu full of sick babies," Reed admitted.
"I thought you where on general with Bailey,"
Jackson mentioned.
I am but a baby was born with all its intestinal organs outside of his body," Reed explained.
"That's cool," Jackson pointed out.
"If I got to do surgery. We're just monitoring him for now. And all Bailey had me do was run labs and other miscellaneous things that could be handled by an intern," Reed told them.
"I worked on a women with a internal bleeding, car accident," Jackson added
"See we didn't all do cool things today," Kat pointed out.
Six hours later they returned to the hospital.
"Good morning," Jackson smirked.
"It's a mediocre morning. It isn't as good as last night but it'll have to do," Kat responded slipping on the last bit of her coffee.
"What specialty are you on this week?"
"Peds yay," Kat smiled.
"Come on it's not that bad," Jackson smirked.
"Okay," Kat rolled her eyes, throwing away the empty cup in the can next to the nurses station.
"Okay I know this is the first time on a peds rotation for some of you. Not for others," she looked to Cristina. "But I wanted you to understand that I run my peds unit a little differently than you may be used to. This is not general surgery in miniature. These are the tiny humans. These are children. They believe in magic. They play pretend. There's fairy dust in their i.v. bags. They hope and they cross their fingers and they make wishes. And that makes them more resilient than adults. They recover faster, survive worse. They believe. In peds, we have miracles and magic. In peds, anything is possible," Once Arizona finished her little speech she couldn't help but roll her eyes. It felt juvenile but this was peds.
She smiled as Cristina turned her back and made a gagging gesture before she walked into the peds ward. Kat followed the group as they walked down the hall filled with flowers and drawing of cartoon animals. One by one they filled into a room.
"Morning, Doctor Robbins," A little boy greeted.
"Good morning, Dr. Wallace," She smiled back.
Kat stood back watching the interaction, technically she was working on Peds so she was supposed to present. But for some odd reason she handed the binder to Cristina. Kat watched as Cristina awkwardly moved confused by the sudden change of presenter. She even giggled a bit watching as she talked to the boy. Her exact words were
"Excuse me, little doctor boy."
Kat bit her lip to keep the laugh quiet. Cristina paused staring at her. So Kat tried to play it off as a cough.
"Sorry Dr. Yang," Kat looked away.
"Uh, Hillary Boyd."
"I hate peds rotations but I just have to last till the end of the week. And I do get to scrub in on an ortho surgery," Kat sighed using an empty lab to practice she stitches.
"But you're so good with the kids," Jackson took a bite out of his apple.
"Well you have to be im not Yang. I know how to interact with humans some what," Kat spoke, tying off the knot.
"Then riddle me this," Jackson started.
Kat paused looking up at Jackson. "Did you just say riddle me this?"
"Let me finish. Why do you get all weird around Torres. You got a crush on her or something, because she's in a relationship," Jackson asked?
"No it's the opposite," Kat said starting another row of stitches.
"What is it then," Jackson wondered?
"She remindeds me of my older cousin, she passed away two years ago cervical cancer. She was my closest friend. Her mom was at all my meets for wrestling and weightlifting. And when I wasn't playing sports I'd go into the town on the weekend and work in the family restaurant. Her dads Italian and french it started off as a pastry shop and then they added more items. I remember when she first got the diagnosis she continued to work til she couldn't. Shes the one that go me into weed, she smoked it because it helped with her appetite," Kat looked down at her hands realizing she over shared. "I'm sorry," Kat apologized.
"No I asked," Jackson cleared his throat.
"I don't know why I just told you that no one know that," Kat shook her head continuing to stitch the silicone gash.
"Maybe because we had sex's before," Jackson shrugged.
"Shut up, got do something other than bother me," Kat rolled her eyes.
"Karev is such a jerk," Reed sighed, walking up to the nurses station where Kat stood charting.
"What," Kat sat the pencil down.
"I mean I'm nice to him," Reed turned around leaning her back against the nurses station.
"I wasn't asking what you meant I was wondering why you where talking to me," Kat clarified.
Reed rolled her eyes. "One of these days you're gonna catch me on a bad day and I'm going to kick you out."
"I've been praying for it," Kat giggled.
"Ladies what are we talking about," Jackson walked up.
"Don't you have somewhere to be," Reed bit out.
"She wants to fuck Karev," Kat sighed as she charted.
"You are so vulgar," Reed gasped.
"And you're so horny. I mean last week you talked about him and his cancer ridden wife. I would hate you too," Kat mentioned.
"Really," Jackson crossed his arms intrigued.
"No," Reed rolled her eyes.
"Yes she did and now he wants nothing to do with her. And so she's mad and whiny. Here's a thought maybe, go find someone else to bone," Kat shut the binder, tucking it under her arm as she walked in to the patients room.
"What crawled up her butt and died," Jackson wondered.
"This is her normal mood," Reed replied.
"No she only acts that way towards you," Jackson smirked walking away.
"Why are you following me," Kat asked Jackson.
"I just wanted to see if you're okay, you seemed to be in a mood ever since this morning," Jackson explained.
"It's nothing, im fine," Kat shrugged him off.
"Don't tell me you fell in love with me or something," Jackson joked.
"In your dreams."
"So what is it, then?"
"I don't know, it's todays is someone's birthday."
"It's someone's birthday everyday," Jackson replied confused.
"Someone who used to be really important to me," She explained.
Jackson formed his mouth into an o shape.
"Yea, so I'd appreciate it if you'd stop following me."
"Or we can go do something else."
"Sex is the only thing swimming up there in your brain."
"Well, some other stuff is up there too, so," he joked.
"The answer is no I'm on my way to a patients room. I have to check some pre ops. So have a good day," Kat told him as she pulled the door leading to the peds ward open.
"Dont tell me you're going to check me too," the girl grumbled as Kat walked into her room.
"Unfortunately I am," Kat responded, walking over to her.
"Honey please just let them work," Her father said.
"Um mr. And mrs. Boyd," Hunt greeted as he and Dr. Torres walked into the room.
" We though we should let you know that Hillary's fox screen from yesterday showed signs of psilocybin in her bloodstream," Torres stated.
"What does that mean," Her father asked?
"Well, it means that when she fell from the roof. She was, uh," Hunt didn't know how to really say it.
"Shrooming," Kat interjected.
"Yeah," Hunt nodded, thankful that Kat said it and not him.
"Magic mushrooms," Torres added.
"What," Her mom turned around to looks her.
"Hillary," Her dad started.
"Mushrooms?"
"Oh come on can everybody please just chill out," Hillary groaned.
"What in gods name were you thinking," Her mother reprimanded.
"You are a big disappointment, young lady,"Her dad added.
She rolled her eyes at the words. "Dad, please, okay the last thing I am is a disappointment. I get straight as I'm on honor roll. I run the student council. I basically am the school paper, and I tutor kids with reading problems. Im every parents dream come true, including yours.
Cristina looked but at Kat who held a smirk on her face. She couldn't help it the sass in the girl was off the charts. It was kind of hilarious. One day the world would knock her off that pedestal.
"I was exploring the bonds of my consciousness with the help of a mushroom. I made a calculated risk going on that roof. Falling off, was a low probability event. And even low probability events occasionally occur, and this one did. So yeah you're bummed I miscalculated, cause it reminds you of your own fallibility. I'm bummed too. Let's just leave it at that."
Cristina smiled as Kat shook her head leaving the room.
"Well it looks like you used pretty much every piece of hardware in the hospital," Hunt stated.
"Yeah makes you think twice about shrooming on a roof," Torres chuckled.
"Yeah. The mouth on this one? If I talked to my parents like that," Owen didn't even know how to properly articulate the amount of trouble he'd be in.
"Oh, my father wouldve," Torres trailed off. "I don't even want to know."
"I had perfect grade, perfect record, and I said whatever I wanted, did whatever I wanted. My parents couldn't do a thing about it," Cristina added.
Maybe that's why she's so insufferable now Kat thought to herself.
"I had perfect academically speaking but I still respected my parents,"Kat spoke up.
"Alright nails in, everything's right," Torres announced. "Let's take a look."
Hunt guided the fluoro over and Cristina stepped on it.
"Perfect," Torres mumbled once she saw her handy work on the screen. "Fantastic."
Everything look good, suddenly a beeping noise started.
"End-tidal c-o-2 just dropped from 34 to 22," Jackson alerted.
Callie sighed. "Come on give me a break here Hillary."
While Torres, Kat, and Hunt tried to figure out what was happening Cristina discovered what was wrong.
"She has a new murmur," Cristina stated.
She moved the fluoro over her heart to see what was causing the murmur.
"There's an air embolus in her heart."
"All right flood the field with saline," Callie instructed.
"Give me bone wax and page cardio, and set up a chest tray,"Hunt tried to work a head.
"And put her Trendelenburg. I can aspirate it," Cristina added.
"No, no, we wait for cardio. And we try to find the source," Owen told her.
"No it'll take thirty seconds," Cristina insisted. " it might take cardio half an hour to get here."
"Dr. Yang," Owen started to speak but Cristina cut him off.
"I've done this before I know what I'm doing."
Hunt spoke over her. "Dr. Yang no end of discussion," He started to raise his voice.
"she could arrest at any moment," Cristina argued.
They waited around ten minutes with nothing from cardio before Cristina spoke up.
"This is ridiculous. You're wasting all this time down here, when we should de dealing with the heart problem directly," Cristina whispered over to Hunt.
"We are following protocol. Cardio is on its way, and we can find the source of the embolus this way," Owen told her.
Her Bp started to drop and her stats were getting worse ever second they waited. Cristina made a choice then and there that she knew could cost her a career but she didn't care.
"Screw it," Cristina mumbled making her way to the other side of the table.
She lifted up the draping and grabbed the tray set up for cardio. She picked up a scapel.
"Dr. Yang the patient is not coding, and you are not qualified to do this," Owen said, with authority.
Cristina ignored him. "Opening the left chest," she announced.
"Oh, Yang really," Torres was taken aback by Cristina disregarding of rules. I mean she knew Cristina wasn't a rule follower but this took it to a new level.
"Turn on the fluoro," Yang instructed.
"Dr. Yang," Hunt said, trying to get her to stop.
"Will someone please step on the fluoro? Or do you want me to go in blind?"Yang yelled.
"Dr. Yang put down that scalpel," Hunt tried once more.
Kat looked around no one moving. Yang didn't listen she looked to Kat to see what she would do then Torres.Kat sighed throwing down her tools and going to step on the fluoro.
"Thank you," Yang mumbled.
"Cristina," Hunt shouted.
Kat held her breathe waiting for Yang to finish. Praying that women actually knew what she was doing. She closed her eyes drowning out the sounds of Hunts voice yelling at Cristina, focusing in on the sounds of the machines around her. She was really a church goer but she prayed to God that this girl wouldn't died by the hands of Cristina Yang with first assist from Kat Hayashi. She finally opened her eyes once she heard
"air embolus out."
Her body was so filled with anxiety she didn't even realize she had started to cry.
"I am never doing that again," Kat shouted.
"Oh shut up," Yang groaned.
"No you have enough money to go sail the seven seas I need to work to live," Kat yelled.
"Stop whining I didn't kill her."
"You know you almost look like a real surgeon. Except a really surgeon know when to push ego aside and stop."
"Look it's finished it's over okay. It's doesn't matter anymore," Yang washed her hands looking straight ahead.
"But it does," Kat stated, Yang still face forward. "Look at me," Kat commanded.
"What."
"I'm sleeping on a couch because it's all I can afford. So you and your savior complex need to calm down because I don't have a trust fund to fall back on. And if, what I heard is true and, Hunt is telling the chief I can't side with you. You know I tried to be nice because your cute and I thought your bossiness was cute but this, this is too much," Kat finished, turning on the faucet. She felt as Yang shoulder bumped into hers as she passed by.
"Cristina is a surgical she doesn't know when to stop," Kat spoke up.
"But she's hot," Jackson popped a chip in his mouth.
"Maybe, but she crazy," Kat sighed.
"Looks like she's tearing that girl a new one," Jackson pointed out.
Kat turned around the face the patients room. " Maybe she didn't learn something today," Kat mumbled.
"What?"
"Nothing," Kat spoke up.
She watched as Cristina left the room.
"Here's Hillary Boyd's chart," she handed it over to the peds nurse.
It's looked as if Cristina wanted to apologize she opened her mouth to speak, but she bit her lip to stop herself. She sigh walking to the other end of the nurse station where Kat and Jackson stood.
"You going to the surprise party," Cristina asked?
Kat sighed.
"Oh so ignore me huh?" Cristina rolled her eyes.
"Can I get an update on my patient of yesterday, Hunter in room 2205," Kat asked?
"You just missed it Robbins stormed out crying," Jackson told as she reentered the living room.
"Seriously," Kat asked?
"Yeah Torres just went after her."
"Well we might as well take advantage party did turn out well but at least we have free booze."
Kat picked up her cup of the coffee table and held it out to cheers.
"Cheers to that," Jackson smiled.
After a few drink Jackson got the bright idea to go talk to Yang.
"I wouldn't do that if where you Jackson," Kat advised.
"What, she's hot and I'm hot, we can be hot together," Jackson swayed
"Fine suit yourself," Kat sighed
Jackson stumbled into her room keeping the door ajar she could hear most of what happened and from her stop on the couch she could see too. She saw Yang push him away and Jackson walk out of the room defeated.
"I saw you with Yang," Kat smirked.
"Shut up," Jackson groaned. Yang left the room soon after.
"She get you all hot and bothered," Kat teased.
"No," Jackson lied. Ok, maybe."
"Me too," Kat admitted.
"Well she's involved," Jackson mocked her.
"We're not," Kat raised an eyebrow.
"Would it be wrong if we did it in her room," Jackson joked
"I think so," Kat laughed.
"Let's go," Jackson grabbed his coat setting down the glass on the coffee table.
A/N: if you want it to be all cute and pretty go read this on Wattpad.
A/N: okay it might be weird right now but they'll eventually stop fucking and Cristina will eventually leave Owen but it'll take some time. Also KAT ADMITTED OUT LOUD THAT SHE LIKES CRIS. Still looking for a proofreader. Anyway I plan on making this an enemies to friends to lovers type of thing so this really slow burn. I picture Kat as a cross between Monsey from on my block and Lexie Grey personality wise. Also im planning on introducing an oc this season but I was wondering if I should take out the character of Sloan Reilly and just do the OC instead since they have similar backstories. ANY WAY TOOTLES 3 ps please let me know if their is grammar srrors or any errors.
