Season Six Episode Nine.
New History
Jackson sighed as he hoped off the on call room bed, to look at the pager on the dresser.
"Finally something," Jackson smiled.
Quickly sliding on his shoes he ran out of the door and to the elevator. The last three hours had been a bust he was tired of waiting around so he decided to take a nap. A wave of energy past over him as he stepped onto the elevator he was pumped. Listening to the music playing in his head as he walked over to the trauma bay to get gowned and gloved.
"How's your night going Yang," Jackson asked, as he tied up the yellow gown?
"We don't have to be friends," Yang said, while she put on gloves.
"The ambulance should be here in three minutes," Bailey announced.
"Wow general too," Jackson mumbled.
"Female, 28, in and out of consciousness, rapid heart rate, Bp is 60/40, fever is 105," Pat announced.
"Kat," Jackson's eyes went wide. "That's that's that's that's Kat," Jackson stuttered.
"If you can't do this Avery we will get someone else," Hunt looked over.
"No I can," Jackson shook his head trying to keep himself from crying.
"That wasn't a threat it was an offer I see you chasing her around the hospital," Bailey clarified.
"I'm good," Jackson let out a deep breath hoping into to action.
"Good, we need a portable ultra sound and some fluids," Owen ordered, as they wheeled Kat into a trauma room.
"Breathing is getting worse we may have to intubate," Teddy looked around.
"There's free fluid in the abdomen," Bailey said
"She needs surgery," Bailey shouted.
"We need a chest ct," Teddy said aloud.
"She won't make it to ct, if we don't get this free fluid out of her now, Yang book and or tell them we're on our way," Bailey insisted.
"I'll be in the O.R. monitor her heart," Teddy told her.
"Right where I want you to be."
"Alright people let's get her to the O.R," Hunt ordered.
Jackson was stuck frozen in place as they wheeled her out.
"Go get Lexie grey tell her to scrub in ," He heard Dr. Owen Hunt yell.
He couldn't move, this was the closet he ever got to someone. Jackson didn't have friends in highschool, or college but he had one now. And he just got her, he couldn't lose her to appendicitis.
"Dr. Avery, we need you to clear out for the next trauma," the nurse startled him a bit.
"Sorry," He let out a deep breath wiping away his tears, before leaving.
Jackson Avery wasn't an emotional man but when I came to the people he loved, he couldn't help but shed a tear.
"Hey she did good, we did have to take out a piece of the intestines due to infection but she's a champ, she'll get better. And one of the nurse called her emergency contact and they should be here in a bit," Cristina explained.
"They called her family in Detroit do you know how far away that is. I could've taken care of her without the hassle of having them flight. A plane tickets not cheap," Jackson started to get worked up.
"Slow down, it wasn't me who called dufus some nurse did," Cristina reminded him.
"Take me to her room," Jackson sighed.
"You know we don't allow visitors at this time," Cristina shook her head.
"Please," Jacksons voice shook as he spoke.
"Look, you work tonight, I don't work till tomorrow. I have five more hours in my shift I'll sit in her room and watch her," Cristina bargained.
"Please," Jackson begged.
"I will watch her to the best of my ability which is better than yours and I'll notify you if anything comes about," Cristina promised.
"Fine," Jackson huffed.
"Hello I'm Nathan Blackwell," He smiled at the front desk.
"And," The nurse looked over her glasses.
"Oh, I'm here for Katie Hayashi, I'm her emergancy contact," He explained.
"Need to see some id."
"Really, they don't do that in Connecticut," He whispered, as he pulled out his id.
"Brockley, is that by London," The nurse asked?
"Yes," He sighed. "Will you please show me to her room."
"Sure," She rolled her eyes as she handed the id back. Coming from behind the nurses station to lead the way.
Kat looked so small in the bed swollowed up by the mountains of sheets and blankets. The girl sitting in the chair woke up just as he entered the room.
"Is she okay," He asked with panic laced in his voice.
"Yes sir, she had a ruptured appendix. It caused an infection in her small intestine, which the general surgeon on call and I fixed. She did have an arrhythmia when she came in but no reason why. And it fixed its self in the middle of the night so it was most likely caused by the ruptured appendix," Cristina explained looked at her watch.
"Thank you," He shook his hand out.
"Wait are you Nathan Blackwell?" Cristina held on to his hand.
"The only one," He smiled pulling back his hand.
"I'm a huge fan of your work and the work you've done on tumors of the heart. I'm a surgical resident but I hope to do a cardiothoratic fellowship," She smiled.
"The long way, I admire it, getting more out of your education. I did a cardiovascular surgerical residency. But then again I did work in that Congolese hospital for three years after I graduated so I tried to hurry it up as fast as I could."
"You know you're the one who inspired me to get my phd. I'm a double doctor too," She smiled.
"And eager too learn I love it," He looked her up and down.
"Oh, oh, how do you know Dr. Hayashi?
"She's my fiancé," He smiled at Kats sleeping body.
"Fiancé," Cristina's mouth went agape.
"Yes, fiancé," He repeated.
Cristina wanted to know more but her pager went off.
"Duty call it's seems, but I'd love for you to come back and pick my brain some more. It's refreshing to hear from the young new innovators of my field."
"Of course sir," Cristina smiled from ear to ear as she left the room.
His happy expression soon left his face once Cristina left the room. He slowly walked over to the bed to get a better look at her.
"Oh my kitten why did you run away," He looked at her with sadness in his eyes as he dragged a hand across Kats smooth face.
The page was from Meredith who was inside a dusty supply closet spiraling. Meredith quickly worked out her issue just in time for Cristina to tell her some news.
"So what was it that you where doing before," Meredith asked as they traveled down to the residents lounge.
"Nathan Blackwell is Hayashis fiancé," Cristina whispered.
"Serioislt," Meredith stopped in her tracks.
"Swear he's in her room right now being the best fiancé at her bed side. He arrive this morning from where ever he was. He was all like is she alright," Cristina went on.
"I don't believe you," Meredith smirked.
"Let me show you," Cristina suggested.
"Fine," Meredith gave in.
"Your sex friend has fiancé," Cristina said to Jackson as she passed him by.
"Sex friend," Jackson looked up.
"oh come on, you and Hayashi just like Callie and Mark," Cristina giggled.
"She my normal friend," Jackson huffed.
"Tell that to the poor on call room," Cristina walked away.
"Wait does she really have a fiance," Jackson wondered?
Meredith turned around a shrugged her shoulders as they waited for the elevator. Jackson had to know if he was homewrecker or more of an apartment wrecker because I couldn't have really been a home if some ones stepping out. Regardless he helped to destroy a perfect relationship.
"Is it true," Jackson looked around realizing he just drew attention to himself by running.
"Hop on pretty boy and see for yourself," Cristina smirked, as the elevator doors open.
"You don't have to be so smug," Jackson complained.
"Can't help it I'm predisposed to be smug," Cristina crossed her arms.
"Why wouldn't she mention a fiancé," Jackson mumbled.
"Do you feel betrayed because you tell each other everything when you paint your nails," Cristina mocked just as the door opened.
Jackson groaned.
"Let up he just found out he's an adulterer, I know the feeling," Meredith sympathized with him.
"Follow me," Cristina instructed as the doors open. They walked about the quiet hall to the general surgery ward. She'd left the icu half way through the night with was good. "Nathan Blackwell."
"Are you okay Cristina," Jackson smiled once he saw no one there.
Kat waved him over and he obeyed.
"I thought my best friend would be by my side the whole night,"Kat smacked her lips.
"I tried but Cristina stoppped me I had a shift in the morning, I'm on it right now and I was supposed to be at home getting sleep," Jackson explained.
"That's can't be healthy one 30 followed by and 18 that's not good," Kat pointed out.
"On the bright side, I get the weekend off for the first time in 3 years," He smiled.
"That's good," She nodded.
"Why didn't you tell anyone you were in pain?"
"I honestly thought it was really bad period cramps at first but then they went away after my period which I now know was just my appendix bursting. It's not like I meant for it to happen," Kat defenddd herself.
"I know I'm sorry. It's just you've become the closet friend I've every had and we've only know each other for a two months. I don't think I afford to lose you. There is no else like you and I need you in my life," Jackson sat next to the bed.
"It was just my appendix," Kat rolled her eyes.
"Which bursted and caused infection so bad they had to take out a part of your intestines," Jackson informed her.
"Sorry you're my best friend too, but do me a favor ring the nurse so they can up my morphine," She smiled.
"Of course," Jackson paged a nurse who came quickly to adjust her meds.
"You've almost max out," Jackson looked at the screen.
"Really," Kat smirked, the morphine hit almost instantaneously.
"You're getting high, now lay back and I'll be here when you wake," Jackson looked out the window. Meredith gone from the nurses station Cristina's still waiting for the star to appear.
"I got pudding,"'Nathan reentered the room with two cups.
Jackson's eyes went wide. "Nathan Blackwell."
"In the flesh," Nathan smiled.
"Nate," Kat mumbled. "What are you doing here."
"I'm here to show you the error of your mistake there's still time we can still get married before the new year. I even brought your old dress, the one you picked out right after your intern exams," He smiled at her.
"What is he doing her," Kat turned to Jackson instantly sobering up.
"He's your fiancé," Jackson tilted his head confused by the question.
"He's not my fiancé," Kat shook her head.
"Of course I am sweetheart," Nathan grimaced the way Kat held this Jackson fellows hand.
"No you're not I never accepted your proposal," Kat looked away.
"How about you get a bit more rest and we can talk about this without drugs in your system," Nate suggested.
"No, I want to talk now."
"I don't think it's the best idea to talk now sweetie," Nathan looked at her with concern in his eyes.
"If we're not going to talk, get out," Kat groaned. "You're no good."
"You're on drugs I'll come back later," He slammed down the pudding cup and left.
Jackson waited till the room was completely silent to say something.
"So," Jackson pressed his lips together.
"I like this medicine," Kat closed her eyes.
"Kat," Jackson giggled.
"I loved Nate once, at first he was warm and loving and kind and gentle, he was like good whiskey you know. And a country boy at heart even though he's from the England. Wait do they have country in England I never been. Nate said he would take me but I broke up with him before he could. Nate, he used to be the best but then he got controlling. Like he wanted to control and to protect his image so the things he once loved me for, he now wanted to change. I wouldn't call him an abuser but he did push me pretty hard once, it was after a long baby we have worked on a baby with a hole in its heart. He wanted to do it the long way, the hard way. But I knew a better way and thankfully the chief of surgery was in the room and allowed me to do. He acted like he was okay with the whole rest of the day. But once we got home he started screaming at me, say how I should never undermine him in his O.R. that I was a nobody. So I brought up the fact that the patient was dying. And he was all like rah rah rah and yelling senseless nonsense at me and I had enough so I called him a weak egotistical maniac. He pushed me against the wall and for a second I thought he was going to hit. I got up and left stayed in a hotel for while. He eventually apologized and I went back but I still wanted to kill him. He wanted to change me into someone I wasn't. He wanted me to be the perfect trophy wife. It felt like with every progression we made in our relationship he wanted more. I knew if I had stayed I'd marry him and one day I'd wake up with four kids and dog with no career, and no legacy. Nothing to prove I ever existed," Kat said with her eyes closed.
"Wow," Jackson went to check her morphine level. How was she able to speak so eloquently on that level of morphine.
"I love Jackson now, but not in the way I loved Nate. Jackson is like my best friend and I don't know how, I mean I just met the dude. But he's so funny and he has dreamy eyes. And he's amazing in bed. And I would never do anything to betray his trust. And now I feel like he thinks he can't trust me because of Nate," Kat sighed.
"She doesn't know it me," Jackson mumbled under his breathe.
"Well why don't you take a little nap for me, and we'll talk more when you take up," Jackson pulled the cover over her body, with a smile.
"Okay I guess," Kat sighed.
"Cristina," Jackson called from across the hall.
"What," Cristina groaned, walking into the room.
"Make sure that man cannot come back in here," Jackson spoke with a serious expression.
"Who, Nathan Blackwell, he has to come back I have a few more questions," Cristina looked confused.
"Cristina," Jackson gritted.
"What happened," Cristina wondered?
"I don't think I should tell you," Jackson sighed.
"Just tell me it's not like I'm a gossip,"'Cristina lied.
"I can't just know that he wasn't a good person to Kat," Jackson summarized.
"Damnit of course all the good ones are bad," Cristina huffed.
"So will you help me," Jackson asked?
"Of course," Cristina gave a little smile before leaving the room.
An few hour later Kat was up and lucid.
"Hey,"Jackson entered the room with fresh pudding cups.
"Don't you have surgery's to go do," Kat sighed.
"Just got out of one,"Jackson set down the pudding cups.
"Don't you think I should wait another twenty four hours before I eat," Kat yawned.
"Oh these are for me," He plopped in the chair.
"Asshole," Kat rolled her eyes.
"You love me though your words not mine," Jackson smiled.
Kats eyes went wide. "I said that to you," Jackson nodded. "I thought you where that nurse I think his name is Eli. Just forget everything I said."
" I can't do that," Jackson laughed.
"Just don't use it against me," Kat pouted.
"I make no promises."
"You are no good," Kat groaned.
"Cuz I'm great," Jackson laughed at his own joke. Kat joined in on the laughter too. But it was soon short lived.
"Already moved on sweetie," Nathan entered the room.
"Please, leave," Kat turned away from him.
"I'm sorry I tried my best," Cristina said out of breathe.
"Just get out of here she doesn't want you here," Jackson looked at him in disgust.
"I don't answer to you," Nathan turned to Kat ."Honey, how are you."
"Leave alone Nathan," Kat tried to keep the tears away.
"She said leave," Jackson groaned.
"Who are you anyway her little guard dog," Nathan gritted.
"I'm her best friend, and I say leave," Jackson got in his face.
"Kat," Nathan pushed him to the side.
"Stop just go now," Kat yelled.
"You don't mean that," Nathan shook his head.
"I mean it with every bone in my body," Kat cried.
"Just give me another chance please," Nathan pleaded.
"I wish I could I really want to," Kat sighed..
"Then do it," Nathan yelled.
"I can't, we aren't meant for each other. What we had was special and pure. But I'm not your happily ever after. And I refuse to change myself for anyone," Kat explained.
"Is this about the kids, we don't need kids," Nathan shook his head now crying too.
"It's more than kids," Kat wiped away her tears.
"Skip the proposal just come back to Manhattan," He begged.
"I can't do that," Kat sighed.
"Katie I don't need anything but you, please come back," He got in his knees kneeling beside the bed.
"Come on get up," She tried to get him up as he side at her bedside. Everyone just stared and watched as the man fell over himself for her.
"Please I'll do anything you want," Nathan cried.
"Nathan you can't give me what I want just like I can't give you what I want. You derserve to have all your dreams fulfilled and so do I," He looked into her eyes as she spoke.
"You are my dreams."
"But you're not mine."
It was a few days after the Nathan Blackwell fiasco. Everyone came by to see the girl Nathan Blackwell fell over herself for.
"Your incision site looks good. Everything else is good, so I'm sending you home," Bailey looked at the chart.
"Really," Kat smiled.
"Yep, you just got to sign so papers and you'll be gone," Bailey said with a straight face.
"When can I come back to work," Kat asked?
"In a month. Oh and no heavy machinery. I doubt have access to that. But I still have to say it," Bailey sighed before walking out of her room.
"I can come back for a month," Kat turned to Jackson.
"A month will be over before you know it," Jackson smiled.
Kat rolled her eyes.
"Maybe take this time to go see your family," Jackson suggest.
"Hell no," Kat waited for the nurse to bring the discharge papers.
"Go to Fiji."
"I used to sleep on a couch, you really think I can afford Fiji."
"Touché," He sighed.
"I heard you're leaving today," Cristina stood in the door way.
"Yeah I am," Kat smiled.
"Well good for you," Cristina gave her an awkward smile before walking away.
"And you say I don't have a chance," Kat smirked.
