Chapter 1

Ozpin, Headmaster of Beacon, sat comfy at his desk as he placed another form in the out pile situated to his right. Yawning into his hand he stared at what seemed like an endless pile of paperwork to his left. Grabbing his favorite mug he swiveled in his chair, took a sip of his freshly brewed coffee and took a look at the night sky. The short hand of the towers clock was firmly pointed at 12 O'clock. Ozpin knew that would mean another restless for him dealing with forms, council requests, and whatever Glynda had given him before she left his office. Letting out a sigh, seemingly resigning himself to his work he turned back to his desk ready to continue when his Scroll started to vibrate.

Ozpin leaned over and saw a familiar name calling him.

"Qrow! so good to hear from you. How goes the mission in Vacuo?" Ozpin asked as he answered the call.

"Hey Oz." There was a pause. "More or less the mission was a success, just…" He trailed off eliciting some concern from the headmaster. Mostly cause for once Qrow's stumbling wasn't coming from his consistent inebriated state. He sounded completely sober.

"Is everything alright Qrow? Are you injured?" The headmaster asked.

"Who? Me? Nah Oz I'm all good just," The raspy voice hunter let out a chuckle. "Just trying to figure out how to bring this up." There was another pause and Qrow looked as he was contemplating the conversation already in his head.

"How'd you feel about having another brat at Beacon?"

Silence.

Of all the things Qrow could say that's not one Ozpin expected. As if collecting himself Ozpin adjusted his glasses and looked back at Qrow.

"Beacon is always open to new talent and those wanting to test themselves as protectors. I'm sure I can hold a spot open for them come next initiation," Ozpin responded.

"How bout tomorrow morning?" If Ozpins grip on his coffee wasn't as tight as it was the mug might have dropped.

"With only 3 weeks left in the semester? Qrow I didn't know your sense of humor had improved." He waited for a response, a laugh, anything that would tell him this had been all but a simple joke, but it never came.

With a heavy sigh, Ozpin rubbed his temple before the headache forming got any worse. "It's not like you to pick up strays." There was a question in there.

"The kid's good Oz, I mean real good. Reminds me of myself and Ray back in the day No family, no formal education, working as an underage mercenary around here." There were some similarities, but Ozpin couldn't shake this wasn't the only reason. "I also kind of involved him in trouble with some of the locals." There it was. "The kid wants to be a huntsman! So, I already offered him a spot at Beacon," Qrow finished.

"Without asking me first?" He got a nervous chuckle in response.

"How's that saying go? Better to do and ask for forgiveness later?" Ozpin snorted.

"Seek forgiveness, not permission." He corrected him. "But in your case, I would beg once Glynda finds out." He heard a muffled choke from the scroll.

"Ma- Maybe we don't tell Glynda it was me?" Qrow pleaded.

"Hmm..." Ozpin faked contemplating. "I think I'll just tell Glynda myself and blame your semblance on how she found out." Ozpin held no sympathy for the man. "Nevertheless, I shall endeavor to try and accommodate your stray." The look of dread on Qrow was replaced with a short smile. "Pending a formal interview of course, I still don't know the young man's name." Ozpin added. All first-year teams were full, Ozpin had to come up with something to bring in a new student this late into the semester. '

Unless' A thought formed.

"I might actually have an idea." This caught Qrow's attention. "It'll require making some calls to James, Leonardo, and Theo but this might work towards some ideas I've had for the Vytal Festival," Ozpin always thinking ahead. "Before I talk to the young man, there are a few things I would like to discuss with you first." Qrow took quick notice in the change of tone.

"Of course. Amber?" Qrow had straightened up

"Hopefully not. There has been an increase in dust robberies through out Vale." Qrow looked confused. "While normally I wouldn't be too concerned with what might be local crime, with Ambers recent attack we can't afford to take any chances now." Qrow hummed in agreement.

"Gotcha, I'll ask around my usual contacts once I'm back." Qrow offered.

"Thank you Qrow, and while you're at it I would like you to head to Mistral as well.

Lil Miss Malachite has often tried to sink her hands into Vale. If this is simply the working of gang activity, while it might be troubling, I'll be slightly more at ease." There was a pause. "If not… It could only mean one thing." She was making her next move. Ozpin could trust Qrow to get the job done, he was always reliable.

"Now then." Ozpins tone changed back to be more relaxed. "Why don't you introduce me to the young man you've enrolled into my school."

"Not gonna let me live this down, are you?" Qrow grumbled.

"I have no idea what you mean." Ozpin played dumb as he took a sip of his coffee watching Qrow step away from the scroll. A young man appeared in his place shortly after.

"Hello there, my name is Ozpin. I am Headmaster here at Beacon Academy. With whom do I have the pleasure of speaking with?" Ozpin asked cordially.

"Cassian, no last name." The response was short with little emotion.

"Mr. Cassian. It is very late here in Vale so I would like to apologize for my bluntness that will proceed. I do not know exactly what my associate Qrow Branwen has told you but this not usually how enrollment works. Especially near the middle of the school year." The young man named Cassian didn't even blink.

"Yea I figured. To be honest with you sir, I didn't really believe Qrow when he told me," Cassian responded.

"I can only imagine the state Mr. Branwen was in when you met him." The comment earned a mocking response heard from off the side.

"That being said, I am not one to stomp on the dreams of a potential protector of Remnant. This year in fact has produced quite a few of special cases that have acquired some rule breaking per say." Cassian listened in. "Qrow there with you is not one to impress so easily and to earn such a recommendation from him, well, I am inclined to do the same for you." This got a response from Cassian. His eyes widened and with a hint of what looked like hope to Ozpin. What I require from you Mr. Cassian; is for you to tell me about yourself, who you are, how you came to speak with me today, why you want to be a huntsman, and most importantly speak the truth.

Do this and I promise Beacon's doors will gladly open for you."

The request was set and yet Ozpin noticed Cassian looked conflicted. His eyes closed; a huff escaped his lips as he let out a deep breath.

"Okay." Cassian spoke determined, his eyes wide open staring at the headmaster.

Author's Notes:

Long time reader of RWBY fanfiction, first time writing! Expect a slight divergence from canon events of the show. I have a lot planned ahead for now so updates will hopefully be consistent. Next chapter will not be a backstory of Cassian just yet. I have that planned for a bit later. I hope you all enjoy and feel free to review, comment, I'll enjoy reading them!
