Chapter 185: The Figure of Revenge

Time passes...

Aoki Keiji, Mizuhara Naoto, Midoriyama Saki and Shiraishi Kazuya were hard at work, sculpturing their figurines at their workplace when the doorbell rang.

"Is that a delivery?" Midoriyama wondered.

"It must be Mitsuhiko-kun and his friends." Aoki corrected. "A boy who lives in the area. I told him I'd show him some figures."

"I invited them." Mizuhara spoke. "They said they liked Yaiba."

In the living room...

"It's so pretty." Ayumi gushed at the winged pegasus on display.

"Did you guys make all of these?" Mitsuhiko was amazed.

"All the university club members here." Aoki replied.

"A gun?" Genta turned to the side and was shocked to see a pistol on a stand.

Aoki stumbled to catch Genta, only to have his hand flip the light switch off.

"The gun is glowing." Mitsuhiko gaped when Shiraishi picked up the pistol.

"It's just a gun-shaped lighter." Aoki remarked, Shiraishi lighting the lighter as proof.

"Aoki, why don't you show the kids the Yaiba figures you are so proud of?" Midoriyama suggested before Shiraishi got angry.

After Mizuhara sat everyone down for dessert and was setting up the recorder to play a Yaiba DVD for the kids when an explosion was heard from the back and the lights went out.

"Don't." Midoriyama stopped Conan from running into the workshop. "It's dangerous in there."

"Shiraishi, are you okay?" Aoki pounded on the workshop door when a second explosion was heard. "It's locked." he cursed. "Mizuhara, bring the key to this room. You guys go outside and call the fire department." he told the kids.

After Megure's team was called in...

"Where was everyone when the fire broke out?" Takagi began questioning.

"We were in the living room with the kids." Aoki replied.

"Then, there was a loud noise and the power went out." Ayumi supplied.

"We heard another explosion after that." Mitsuhiko added.

"What did you all do?" Takagi inquired.

"Naturally, we went to the studio to help Shiraishi." Aoki answered.

"But the door was locked." Midoriyama stated.

"I think he locked it today because the kids were here., so they couldn't bother him while he was working." Aoki guessed. "So, what caused the fire?"

"There was a lighter in the room." Takagi replied. "We believe he was trying to light a cigarette or something and that ignited the fire."

"I heard another sound before the power went out." Conan supplied.

"Inspector." Aoki cut in. "How is Shiraishi?"

"According to our coroner, he inhaled too much smoke and suffocated to death by the time he was taken away." Megure answered.

"What's that?" Conan walked over to the balcony and saw the two forensics officers kneeling around a glove and a wire.

"A rubber glove and copper wire." one of the forensics officers replied.

Looking at the burnt-out outlet, Conan realized what the odd sound he heard was. Going back to the crime scene, he surveyed the workshop, taking note of the severely burnt dustbin, a sunken-in plastic bottle, the gun-shaped lighter and the opened bottle of thinner which had a nylon thread attached to it. After being chased out by the forensic officer in the workshop, he ran to the fridge and opened the ice cream box in the cooler and found Shiraishi's phone and light inside.

"Could I have your attention please?" Megure requested. "After examining the scene, we believe it's likely the fire was caused by a person."

"Regarding the power outrage, the outlet next to the TV stand was burnt." Takagi added. "We also found copper wire and a rubber glove on the balcony. We believe someone inserted copper wire into the outlet and deliberately caused the power outrage."

"When the first explosion occurred, Mizuhara-san was searching for a Yaiba DVD near the TV." Conan remembered.

"I have no idea what you are talking about." Mizuhara protested.

"Why would he do something like that?" Midoriyama asked.

"All the solutions in that room must've exploded at different times." Aoki reasoned.

"Only the area around the garbage bin and Shiraishi-san were badly burnt." Megure pointed out. "The rest of the room wasn't burnt much at all. The solutions didn't explode on after another."

"There was an exploded plastic bottle in the room." Conan reminded. "Someone probably put dry ice inside that plastic bottle and made it explode."

"That explosion signaled when to cause the power outrage." Megure continued. "The power outrage then activated the mechanism that caused the fire."

"This is the mechanism." Takagi showed the opened thinner bottle. "This bottle of thinner with a nylon thread tied around it was in the room. Mizuhara-san, when you brought the ice cream to Shiraishi-san, you put dry ice inside the plastic bottle containing water you prepared beforehand. You left both it and an opened bottle of thinner with nylon thread tied to it that you'd also prepared beforehand on the shelf next to the door and exited the room after attaching the end of nylon thread to the lock on the door. Later, the plastic bottle exploded. The blast caused the bottle of thinner to fall, pulling the nylon thread and locking the door. Then the thinner spilled from the fallen bottle."

"If Shiraishi-san were to lit a cigarette under those circumstances, the flames would ignite the fumes and cause an explosion." Megure concluded. "Since there was no guarantee that he would smoke a cigarette then, you listened to the sound of the plastic bottle exploding and caused the power outrage, plunging the room into darkness."

"What do you mean when you say he caused a power outrage because he doesn't necessarily smoke?" Mitsuhiko was confused. "I doubt he'd smoke just because it was dark in the room."

"Put yourself in Shiraishi-san's shoes and think about it." Conan reasoned. "What would you do if a plastic bottle suddenly exploded and your room became dark?"

"I'd use my lighter's flame as a light source." the other three realized.

"Mizuhara-san, in order to guarantee he'd ignite the fumes, you steadily took Shiraishi-san's phone and light so he'd use the gun-shaped lighter coated with fluorescent paint next to the door." Megure summarized. "Judging by the severe burning around the garbage bin, you must've filled it with a large number of tissues soaked in a flammable liquid."

"I'm sorry." Midoriyama spoke out. "Before the fire broke out, I threw away a bunch of tissues I used to soak up the ethanol I spilled over there."

"It's not Saki's fault." Aoki stepped in. "I told her to do it."

"So, this is an accident." Midoriyama insisted.

After realizing all three university students were involved in the fire, Conan made a call to Professor Agasa.

"Why would you do this?" Megure asked after Mizuhara confessed.

"I did it for Yuri." Mizuhara admitted.

"She was a member of our club." Aoki explained. "She killed herself last year."

"The other day, Yuri's parents showed me her designs." Mizuhara added. "Among them, we found the same designs we're working on now that Shiraishi allegedly created. When I asked Shiraishi about it, he admitted he'd been stealing Yuri's designs. Yuri looked up to Shiraishi as someone who'd participated in contests since high school. She was so happy to be in the same club as him. He took advantage of her pure feelings and betrayed her. She lost hope and took her own life."

"Hold it right there." Professor Agasa stepped in. "Conan-kun filled me in on the details. It almost certainly was Mizuhara-san who used the mechanism to set the fire. Shouldn't it be possible to help Shiraishi-san right away? After all, Mizuhara-san's mechanism didn't work. Detective Takagi, where was the bottle of thinner used in the mechanism?"

"On the floor in the corner of the room." Takagi answered.

"That proves the mechanism didn't work properly." Professor Agasa correctly. "If the mechanism had worked, the bottle of thinner would've been hung beneath the lock and eventually fallen when the thread burned. It should've been directly in front of the door. The blast from the plastic bottle exploding was probably too strong. The entire mechanism, including the thread and bottle, must've been blasted across the room. The two of them realized what Mizuhara-san was planning and that his plan was likely to fail." he turned to Aoki and Midoriyama. "So, when the first explosion occurred and the power went out, they stopped Conan-kun from going to see what happened and waited for the second explosion. Sure enough, the mechanism failed and as Shiraishi-san attempted to flee..." he revealed Aoki and Midoriyama had kept the door closed to stop Shiraishi from escaping.

"We heard you and Shiraishi arguing." Aoki confessed. "We didn't know at that time, but we still hurt Yuri."

Later that night...

"I know the both of have been very busy lately." Amuro dropped in Ami's unit. "So... belated Valentine's Day present? I brought chocolate lava cake I made."

"I also have a Valentine's Day present for you." Ami chuckled, letting the tanned blond in. "Jelly donuts with strawberry jam."
