Chapter 27: Original Chapter 0.8

"Okay, Teyla, open your eyes." Alexandra said with a big smile on her lips.

Teyla did as her friend said. Immediately, she saw Jennifer, Amelia, Samantha and a few other women from Atlantis and that had become friends over the years in the ancient city.

"I thought you would like something... familiar. To celebrate the happy occasion." The scientist continued as the athosian looked around the camp to a very familiar mainland landscape. "You talk about Athos all the time, so…"

"It is quite pleasant. Thank you, Alex." Teyla smiled, turning to her young friend. "I just..."

"I know. But you need to have some kind of celebration and this is an Earthly one that you might enjoy. Besides, Kanaan wouldn't want you to be gloomy about it. He would be happy you're celebrating the birth of your child." Teyla was about to say something more. "There is still hope. We'll find him and your people."

There was so much reassurance on Alexandra's part that Teyla relaxed and offered her a smile.

"C'mon. We need to start the party." Samantha interjected, stepping close to the two friends.

"Where's Teyla and Alex?" Ronon asked, sitting down in front of John for lunch.

"Babyshower day."

"Right." Ronon nodded.

"Alex took her, Sam and a bunch of other women to the mainland. No men allowed." The pilot grumbled, playing with his food.

"And you hate it." The satedan commented, having a bite of his sandwich.

"She said she would protect them with her life. Whatever that means nowadays. And that they would be back by nightfall."

Ronon could see his friend was on edge at the prospect of something happening to all of them.

"Why don't we go? Set a perimeter. We'll leave before they notice we were there."

With a surprised look, the pilot looked up from his lunch.

"Why didn't I think of that?"

"Because you're afraid of Alex. And you've been avoiding her since you two had your date." Ronon merely said with a mocking smirk.

"It was not a date. It was two friends having a drink."

"I don't understant why you haven't made a move yet."

John rolled his eyes.

"There is no moves to make, Ronon. She's... it's complicated."

"You are complicated and somehow you always get the girl."

"I don't always get the girl. You sound like Rodney."

Ronon gave him a look as he finished his lunch.

"Alex is an Ancient. And, as far as I know, she still cares about Mitchell. And she's Gen. O'Neill's niece. See? It's complicated."

"Sheppard, you better make a move soon. Or you're going to explode with all of that thinking in your head."

"I like you better when you're silent." The pilot grumbled which made Ronon snort.

The warrior leaned against the table.

"Listen, you care about her. I get that. And she's your friend. I get that too. But if you don't try something, anything, then you're not the John Sheppard I know."

There was a moment of silence as the two men stared at each other.

"Let's go crash a party."

"Now you're talking." Ronon chuckled following John out of the mess hall.

Alexandra could see that Teyla was having fun, even if it was for a little while. She knew what the athosian might have been feeling lately. The loss of someone she loved. She knew it too well.

"What about you, Alex?"

The scientist looked up. It had been Amelia to ask the question.

"Sorry. I guess I spaced out. What was the question?"

"Do you have someone back on Earth? Or here?"

"Neither."

"Really? I thought you and Col. Sheppard…" Jennifer started.

"Oh, no." She joked with a chuckle, giving a brief glance towards Sam. "Me and Sheppard are just friends. Relationships are not my strength really."

"I know someone just like that." Teyla let it slip, only for Alexandra to hear as they sat next to each other.

The scientist turned to Teyla with a frown.

"John, actually…" The athosian whispered as she cleared her throat and the other women continued.

"He does like to charm everyone, doesn't he?" Another woman mentioned. "But his attentions don't stay for long."

"Isabel, that is completely different." Jennifer said with a sigh.

"Remember that Ancient he brought to Atlantis? He was all over her…" Another said.

"We are straying off topic, ladies. Why don't we start giving Teyla her presents?" Samantha interrupted, not particularly enjoying the direction the conversation was taking.

Alexandra's mind retreated on those last words. She remembered reading that report. The Ancient that had been banished. Chaya.

"Are you okay?" Teyla asked her after a moment of silence from her friend.

"Of course. I just remembered I forgot your present back in the jumper." Alexandra offered a smile as she stood. "Be right back."

Quickly, the scientist left the campsite and walked back to the jumper. Her mind went over the others and Teyla's words. John was her friend. Nothing more.

However, since they met back in Antartica, she had to admit she liked the banter, the flirting, their talks. Their little moments. But that was it, wasn't it? Friends did that, right?

And, thinking about it now, Samantha also had got it right. After their little beer encounter, their day off at Keras settlement, him being shot back on Earth, she knew a friendship with John Sheppard could become something more... If only she let her walls down.

No. She wouldn't allow it. Not after what happened with Cameron. Alexandra knew that, this time, she wouldn't survive it.

Suddenly, a strange sound was heard near the jumper. In a second, the soldier in her held up her weapon.

"Wait! It's just us." John Sheppard came out from the tree line, followed by Ronon, as Alexandra put her gun away.

"Really? What are you two doing here?" Alexandra rolled her eyes at the two men holding their hands high.

"Keeping you girls safe." The pilot shrugged, placing his hand on his belt.

"Are you saying you don't trust me to keep them safe?" She placed her hands on her hips in a challenge.

"What? Of course I do!"

"Mhm…" Alexandra entered the jumper and came out with a box. "Who's idea was it?"

Ronon and John pointed at one another.

"Children..." She mumbled, turning her back on them and following the path pack to the campsite.

"We just wanted to make sure everything was fine." Ronon tried to appease her.

"Well, you better have a gift for Teyla. I'm surprised you didn't bring Rodney."

"We didn't tell him. Or else there would be no cake." John said, already following her.

After the three made themselves known to the group, presents were exchanged and conversations continued, with pastries and drinks passing around.

"She looks happy." John said at some point after finding Alexandra by the edge of the group watching their friend opening wrapping paper and boxes.

"She does. She needed this."

"I'm glad you did this for her." The pilot bumped his shoulder on hers.

Alexandra rolled her eyes with a smile.
